My brain was very wrong + Garmin 265s review!

(Shorts, top, shoes)

I swear.  The workouts that I don’t think twice about leading up to them because I think they will be short kill me the most.  I guess my brain was already well into taper mode, thinking everything would be easy breezy. <— That also made me think this one would be easier than it was…

I’m glad I couldn’t see all of the frost on the track until the end of the workout when the sun came up, ha.

We did a 2.5-mile w/u, 2 miles @ 6:25 pace (both miles slightly uphill, which began the frying of my legs), 5 minutes of easy running, and then started our track workout:

6 x 800m (2:57 average), 90 seconds easy, 400m (1:25 average), 2 minutes easy

And then, once those were done, it was 6 x 200m (41 second average) w/200m recovery jogs.

13.5 miles total, and after months of many marathon-paced effort miles, this short, fast stuff hurt more than expected.  I am pretty sure my core was the most exhausted part of me by the end.

I’m listening to the Comfort Crisis right now, and when I wanted to quit this workout during the first interval—> I kept reminding myself that my life is way too comfortable (heaters, cars, access to food etc) and that we aren’t meant to live so comfortably.  I have to force the lack of comfort in my entire body at the track early on a Tuesday morning with friends.

When I got home, Brooke wanted me to come out and hang with her while she skateboarded.  I added about six layers, and I was good to go.

Andrew went to his first CrossFit class with some friends who invited him. I have a feeling this is going to be his new thing!

Sometimes I make my green smoothie in my room to avoid the chance of the blender waking up Beck before he is ready to wake up.

The Garmin 265s!!  I was going to wait until after my race to review the 265s, but I couldn’t wait because I am so in love with it.

So, today, I am talking about the ten reasons why I love this watch:

1.  I keep forgetting I am wearing it.  It actually scares me because I think, ‘Oh dang it, I forgot my watch, and if my workout doesn’t upload to Strava, then it didn’t happen,’ but then I realize I am wearing it when I look down.  It is so ridiculously light compared to any other watch I have ever worn… just 39 grams!  It feels so soft and light against my skin, which has me sold.

2.  The screen.  It is so bright, and whether I am running in the pitch dark or as light as can be, I can see every little number easily.  I didn’t realize how much I would love this feature until I had it, but it makes glancing down to look at your pace the easiest thing ever.  The person next to you running could probably even read from it, too—> That’s how bright it is!  Even though the face is smaller than any watch I’ve used in the past, it is the easiest for me to read off of.

3.  I can listen to music directly from my watch and control the music on my phone with my watch.  I like that a lot.  (It’s a common feature of many different Garmin watches, but it’s great, especially in the winter when you do not want to remove your gloves and get your phone out to change the song).

4.  The battery life is up to FIFTEEN days, even on smartwatch mode!  This is much longer than any of my other watches.

5.  About 8ish years ago, I had a touchscreen Garmin, and I swore them off forever after that one because it drove me crazy… Until this one.  I still mostly use the buttons on the watch, but the touchscreen is surprisingly responsive and easy to swipe through.

6.  Back to the brightness (clearly a big deal to me), I am obsessed with the color display.  It just adds more excitement to my life as I’m going through every piece of information on the watch (wow, I sound cool;).  There are so many different watch faces to choose from, and I find this extra detail a fun perk.

7.  So far, I can’t find any functions on the 265s I am missing after using the Fenix 6s for about five years… The 265s is $449, and the Fenix that I had is $799.  I ADORE the Fenix also, but this is a cheaper option.

8.  Garmin Connect has always allowed me to track my period, but now I can have it all on my watch and not have to go to the app!  It also has a pregnancy tracker and can show your baby’s gestational age/size and some tips for that point in pregnancy.  I am ALL about more information on our cycles and women’s health being accessible, and it’s great to have it on my watch.

9.  It charges much faster than my previous watches.  Maybe that is because it is still pretty new, but it absolutely gasses up so quickly.

10.  The morning report is a favorite.  It shows me the weather, how I slept, and my morning recovery. <–Another feature on many of their watches, but I like the look of it all more on this one. I also love that it reminds me how long until my next race, my goal for the race, and also the predicted weather for race day (so far, it is looking great:)

The technology has changed a bit over the years but this 305 was sure reliable!

Who has tried CrossFit?

What watch do you use, and what do you love about it?

Run/workout that you went into thinking it would be a breeze, but then it wasn’t?

I go to the garage each morning to make my smoothie so as to not wake the family. A bit cumbersome and often very cold but just seems like the kind thing to do.

Have a great day Janae!

The garage is even smarter… kids need sleep and we need to make sure they get it:). Thanks LC, you too!

I haven’t done CrossFit but I’ve done classes that are a similar style- they are fun! Very intense but pushed me to do things I didn’t think I could do.

I use a Garmin Forerunner 645 right now. It does everything I need it to and it’s not a smart watch, which I like! I want time and GPS, not text and calls.

That is awesome, Mariah! Andrew went again today so I think he might be hooked. That is a great point, sometimes on my watches I disconnect the bluetooth to avoid getting notifications (my phone is always on silent for this reason ha). Sometimes we just need to do without so many pings. Hope you are having a beautiful day as I send you an email with another notification haha sorry!

Forerunner 305 gives the same vibes as the home camcorder that needed to be hoisted up onto parent’s shoulder.
You are now two steps away from operating a smoothie shop from your bedroom. That cozy fireplace is the best rewarming spot after a gallon smoothie.
Did you see that Jared Ward dropped from the trials???
I have the feeling that I’m going to be sad for every woman who doesn’t make the team.

I’m sure our dad’s were all wearing the 305 as they took the home videos! Bahaha valid point… I might never have to leave my room again now. I saw that when I woke up this morning and it absolutely broke my heart. He is just such a good person. That dang hamstring of his. Same same. My good friend is racing it and I just want her to be in the top 10 so so bad too. ALL of the feelings will be happening on Saturday. Have a great day, Molly!

I agree with everything in the watch review. I have had mine about a week and also switched from the Fenix 5s. The main reason I switched was because of the vivid display. It was getting hard for me to see my stats on the fenix so this feature alone was worth it. So many stats on the forerunner. I absolutely love it.

Reply

No way! Oh I love hearing this. It really is the display that sold me… it makes it just too easy to see all of the things. So happy you are loving it and keep me updated with your training!

CrossFit=Injuries. They’ll all try to tell you differently. But it’s not possible to rapidly complete heavy weight workouts without some injuries.

I am definitely not an expert on this topic but I’ll bring it up with Andrew! Thanks Laura, have a wonderful day!

Sorry if that came off negative. Coming from a girl who’s done crossfit on and off for years, I so want to be the crossfit nerd but the injuries get me everytime after 6-8 months. I think after my last back injury I swore it off for good. (I think) Probably some of it is me trying to out perform my ability. Hope it works for Andrew!

Oh my goodness! It didn’t at all! Oh that sounds absolutely miserable… back injuries are the worst! Keep me updated with how you are doing, Laura!

The pic of the old garmin cracked me up! Reminded me of when I ran cross country and track in high school. Garmin watches weren’t really a thing, so we just had a basic timing watch. For our easy runs, we would count every 8 minutes a “mile” and had no idea how fast or slow we were going! I think we were on to something though because that is the fastest I’ve ever been! Haha

Reply

Jerry miles… haha isn’t that what Shalene would do for her easy runs too! I might start doing that for my easy runs haha… I’ll get up to like 110 miles per week. Thanks for sharing this, it made me smile! Have a wonderful day, Christine!

I have the Garmin 965 and love it. Do you wear the 265s to bed to track your sleep and HRV? I still use the Vertical Meteo watch face but I actually had to pay for it this time, which is no big deal. I also added the Hydrate + app to track how much water i drink.

Reply

JOHN! Yes, I couldn’t wear the fenix to bed because it was so massive but this I don’t even notice. Ummm off to add the Hydrate+ app, that is so great. Have the best day!

Ha ha…. I used to take my coffee grinder into the bathroom to grind the beans so I wouldn’t wake the boys. The things we do…
Great job on that workout! And wow the frost! Just looking at it makes me cold.
I’m wearing the Fenix right now, but have been thinking I might want an upgrade.
My running friend goes to a gym that does CrossFit type class and loves it. She has invited me to go, so maybe I should try it out.
Have a great day Janae

Hahaha that is hilarious and I’ll have to try our bathroom next;) I’ll go if you go! I might just have to after this marathon. Thanks Wendy, you too! PS your dress was stunning!

I’ve been doing a combo of CrossFit and running for 10 years! The strength training really improved my running. It’s always different and fun. I appreciate not having to plan a workout and have it all laid out on the board. Hope he enjoys it!

Ten years! I love that, Mary and so great that it has helped your running so much. That is what Andrew said; it is fun because you don’t know what is next! He went again and loved it today. Have the best day, Mary!

You know I was so thrilled to hear Andrew went to CrossFit! You know I love it so much. Now we just have to get you hooked too 😉

Hahaha I will come ride the bike, maybe;). I swear I would break my back! The day you come on a run with me is the day I’ll go to CrossFit;). Have the best day, Mindy!

Do you think real people with real jobs are interested or have time to track menstrual cycles? Or even care that much? I would never buy a watch that plays into that neuroses.

Hey! I’ve definitely gotten that feel after the comments you’ve left over the years ha! About your comment today, I think that is what makes the world such a wonderful place. We all have different things that interest us and draw our attention and it would be so boring if it was the same for everyone. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Hi! It’s that you blogged about the Garmin, and particularly the bright display, today. I have a Garmin Venu that I bought in July 2020. It has the AMOLED display which is so colorful and bright, but I found after less than a year, the display was faded in many places. It makes it super hard to read, and I was really disappointed, because I kept it on the recommended brightness/motion sensitivity settings (i.e., didn’t leave it on “always on” mode) to avoid this very problem.

I’ve been meaning to call Garmin to see if the newer version (Venu 3) was fixed to correct this problem. I love the watch otherwise, but definitely don’t want to fork over $450 just to have the same problem in a matter of months.

Hope you have a great day!

Reply

Hey Susan! Okay, that is the biggest bummer! Please call Garmin and tell them so they can replace it; that is a huge problem that they should fix! Let me know what they say and I hope you do too!

Reply

I called Garmin, and they had me upload a pic of my watch to them. The rep said that they do have reports of this issue, and that the Venu 3 has improvements to the display because of that. Unfortunately, they didn’t offer a replacement because, though the issue came up less than a year after I bought the watch, I didn’t bother to report it until now. Lesson learned! I’ll probably still buy a Venu 3, because I’ve always been a Garmin fan. If I do have the same issue (fingers crossed I won’t!), I’ll make sure to call them right away while it’s still under warranty.

BOOOOOOO I was so hoping you would get a new one!!!!!

I had a Garmin for a couple of years (nothing fancy, just the most basic one) and I debated on whether to get a nicer one or switch back to a Polar (I had used the heart rate watch years ago). I ended up making the switch back to Polar (the pacer pro) a few months ago and I LOVE IT. It’s just a personal preference with an interface that I was more used to, haha. I’ve never tried CrossFit but it honestly looks so fun.

I just finished reading “Dessert Can Save the World” – about the Momofuku Milk Bar founder. It was an interesting, quick read!

I had that Garmin 305 and ran my first marathon in it! Good memories!
Do you find you have to change out of a wet sweaty sports bra immediately? I do or I am freezing cold from that sweat on my skin. Is that just me?

Reply

Came here to ask why the switch from fenix to this model, but then I was distracted (and shocked) by that commenter who doesn’t like women. Funny to see their participation in the comment section of a woman-run blog! lol! That made my day. Not to minimize the negativity it might bring you, but what a trip!

You look so strong running around the track! Please tell Andrew no broken bones at cross fit!

I just got a new Garmin 965! I love it so much. The only differences I could find between the 265 are that it isn’t available in an s, and the 965 predicts my heat and elevation acclimation, which I love seeing.

I had a steady (mp+:20)/1/2 mp alternating workout yesterday and it was much harder than I expected.

I am currently reading Lisa Jewell’s None of this is True and it’s so good so far, like I wake up and the first thing I want to do is read.

Yay Andrew! I love Crossfit. Yes you can get injured if you go too hard….which can be hard for some folk’s egos….not to keep up. It really is scalable for anyone though. It really becomes such a family in a class!

I just read the Great Alone…so good!

OMG you have the 305?…..I loved that watch..mine eventually stopped charging, but loved it. so easy to use. My go to triathlon watch….and even when the screen would go blank, it was just saving energy and kept on tracking…
I now have a 945 which is good for run and swim, a Polar M460 for the bike….yes, I forgot my M305 on the top of my car after a work out, heard it fall off..and then went to work at my Running Room, sales were down, so why not buy a watch?

Ah I am behind in posts and just seeing now about Andrew & CrossFit, and I am so happy he is doing it. I did absolutely nothing before I started CrossFit at age 30 and it’s changed my life in so many great ways, mental, physical, example for my kids Iike you are for running. I am over 2000+ classes in now and no plans on stopping. My body & health has never been better 😊.

And, as a real woman with a real job, not only do I track my cycle, I just this week attended a perimenopause workshop that stressed the importance of tracking for knowing if you’re in or nearing that stage of your life, and things you can do to ward off the less pleasant side effects of it. Tracking is SO important and empowering.
