So you wanna train and still be good at your relationships?

(Leggings, top, shoes)

I found my dream workout morning.  It started with eating breakfast and cuddling in bed for about 45 minutes before getting the kids to school. Then, I drove to a new area to meet friends for a 9:30 am workout.  It felt so good to have had a big breakfast and adequate time for it to digest along with it being light outside so I wasn’t freaking out over every step.

Winter running tip—> Drink water wherever you can find it.  You’d think my bout with Giardia in 2014 would cause me to think twice about this…

I saw some donkeys along the way!

And I got in a solid 15 miles with what felt like a lot more left in the tank at the end.  3-mile warm-up, 3 miles @ 6:35 average (felt very comfortable here), .5 miles easy, 3 miles @ 6:22 average, .5 miles easy, 9 (did an extra one for extra credit… or I just lost track of how many we had done) x 1 min @ 5:50ish with 1 min recoveries, cd.

I am positive that the treadmill is twice as hard as running outside.  These paces on the treadmill felt so much harder than outside.

The more I have worn the Vaporfly 3s, the more I realize I like them much more than the 2s.  I was pretty amazed by the grip on these yesterday… the 2s felt like skis.

This wasn’t bad for a Costco meal that came together in 5 minutes.  My biggest resolution is eating dinner together at the table most nights and so fast meals like this often times save me.

A question I often get is how to train while still being a good wife/partner/parent/sister/daughter/friend, etc.   Training is exhausting, and balancing everything ideally just isn’t possible.  But my biggest goals for training aren’t time-related anymore; it’s being able to do the hobby I love (marathon train) without my family really knowing about it.  Of course, I want them to see I’m working hard towards a goal (yay!), but I don’t want them to feel like our plans revolve around that, or I’m too tired to do things like play soccer with them because of my training.

I won’t say I’m an expert at this, but I will say I’m an expert at failing at this and finding some ways to do it much better than I was, so get ready for my bullet points:

*If you want, you can try and find that in between place.  Fast marathons and dream times are huge.  I get it.  I lived with those for a very long time.  But the difference in a few minutes or seconds doesn’t really motivate me anymore.  St. George 2022= = I feel like I put a lot into training, didn’t travel as much, was a stickler with my bedtime (sorry I was boring, Andrew), and felt tired a lot from higher mileage.  St. George 2023= I was much more chill.  I worked hard but also went on more trips, took unexpected rest days, and switched workouts for my family’s schedule.  I also lowered my mileage so I didn’t feel like a robot—>  I ran 20 seconds slower in 2023 than in 2022.  Finding this fine line has been huge for me.  A few seconds or minutes isn’t worth upping my mileage to the point I’m a less fun wife and mom.   I guess the question now is, how bad do you want it?  For me now, I love that in-between place where I’m still pushing myself and setting goals but not so worn down that I can’t keep up with the rest of my life.  But I also see when it is worth it to go all in on a goal, so you have to figure out where you are on the spectrum.

IMG 1367

*OUTSOURCE if you can.  Training doesn’t last forever, and hiring cleaners to help you when you don’t have the energy to clean on top of training is so worth it.   Outsource your meals or household help during those peak weeks because we can’t do everything.   Or learn to live with a messy house:). It’s a short season; mold won’t accumulate fast enough in your three peak weeks leading up to the taper so don’t feel bad about not cleaning;)

*Ditch the phone.  My biggest nightmare is getting to heaven (hopefully) and having a clock that shows exactly how much time I have spent scrolling or doing meaningless things on my phone.  When balancing heavy training and my relationships, the phone scrolling is the first to go.  Ditching social media (social media is my job, and I’m telling you to delete IG if you need haha) will also help you to go right to sleep at night to help you to wake up feeling fresh for everything on your plate for the day.

*Your goals matter.  Talk to yourself the way you would your best friend.  You would tell them that they are doing an amazing job making it all work.  Your goals matter and are important, so if you slack off on friends, neighbors, coworkers, or events for a few months, that is okay, and I give you permission to do so.  If you have big goals for your running, remind the people in your life that this is just for a season, and those who love you will do everything they can to help you reach your goals!

*My goal of not having my kids know I’m marathon training involves continuing to take them to see the world daily.  Some afternoons, my body and brain say absolutely not, but forcing myself out the door brings me to life again.  The fresh air wakes me up, and before I know it, I feel alive again, so sometimes we have to push ourselves out the door.

*Seville is my 20th marathon, and I finally feel like I’m figuring out my nutrition, which has brought me more energy than previous training cycles. I can’t believe I marathon-trained on soda and candy like I used to.  I finally get enough protein daily (thank you, Core Power), and my green smoothies hyper-nourish my cells.  Now, I make sure I’m getting enough food through the day on top of those two things, and my energy levels are better than they have been in a long time.  I really can’t believe the difference drinking 3/4-1 lb of greens  (chard, spinach, kale) a day has made for me.  It’s fun to feel like I have more energy at 37 than 27.

From my 1st marathon… I was so naive, thinking it was a one-and-done situation;)

*Please remember training is a running influencer’s job.  DO NOT, I repeat, do not compare your training to an influencer’s training.  You are doing amazing juggling everything you do, and while I still juggle, it’s not the same because this is my job.  I’m here for any pep talks you need.  I am so impressed by you.

Do you have any thoughts on this topic?  How do you help balance training with the rest of your life?

Ever had a parasite?  Has anyone ever had Giardia?

-I still shudder thinking about when I had it, and I still haven’t had Indian food since (the last meal I had before I went downhill).

Have you ever had food poisoning (the above answer got me thinking about this)?

-Papa Murphy’s Pizza in 2001.  I still take detours to avoid driving in front of Papa Murphy’s establishment.

Any quick meals from Costco that you love?

Wow, insane workout!
I love your resolution to more dinners at the table. That one on one/five is so special!
Great tips and perspective for running. One thing I never let myself think about is my weight and running. No race/time is worth my peace of mind regarding food/relationship with my body.
Also, no parasite for me. I did have food poisoning one Thanksgiving night though!

It really is crazy… our conversations at the table > at the counter. We are able to look at each other in the eyes and it is just my favorite. AMEN to that, Molly. Health is wealth and I never want to put myself in a place where I am taking away my health because of running. Thank you for that, I always appreciate your perspective on nutrition so much. Oh I bet that was your worst Thanksgiving ever. Have the best day, Molly!

I agree that running on the treadmill feels way faster!! I wish I knew why.

It helps to get people involved in your training (e.g. running with friends or a significant other). And sometimes it’s about working out at not ideal times so you are free for the important things (like my 4:45 alarm yesterday because I needed to run early).

SO much harder! Oh I feel that deeply… it’s so much easier for me to do that in the warmer months too when they can bike with me. That is another important point. THANK YOU for sharing, Mariah and 4:45… you are hardcore!

A couple of years ago I was adventurous and wanted to make pasta carbonara. I stupidly used eggs that had been on the counter for days to bake something. I made the dinner and then came what I can only describe as death while living. It’s some of the worst pain I’ve ever been in. I haven’t had pasta carbonara ever since and likely never will again as long as I live.

Oh Jacinta. I cannot even IMAGINE how hard that was. I will never post a picture of pasta carbonara on my blog again for your sake. Hope your day is a great one!

I love your goal of “My goal of not having my kids know I’m marathon training” this is something I strived for during my two marathons last year. I did really struggle with this….but now my kids fully expect the fully reclining cinema seats which were my crutch when I was trying to be “fun mum” whilst actually slowly dying after my long run and from all the training. Actually taking a year off marathons (I think although my London championship entry went in “just in case” I change my mind and decide to run it) to try and get the balance back and focus on the half which is less invasive to family life.

Reply

Seriously, the half is much less invasive! I have been thinking about taking a year off at some point, too, from marathons, so I might have to email you when that happens:). Let me know if you do decide to run London!

I found during my marathon training this fall that on rest days when I wanted to do nothing and felt like my husband should do it “all” because I was training, I was being pretty selfish not realizing he was doing it “all” on my hard running days too. So we had a really good honest conversation about it and I’m ready for a new approach this fall! It’s all about perspective and you have a great one!

Never had giardia but had norovirus one Christmas. It was awful, I asked my parents to amputate my legs because they ached so badly! (Both parents are medical professionals, lol)

SUCH a great reminder. I have also found myself doing that too, Rachel! Sometimes we just have to push ourselves off the couch and forget that we are tired to make sure we are doing our part in our relationships. Oh I bet that was HORRIBLE. I hope that never again happens to you. Have a wonderful day, Rachel!

I love the chicken fried rice from Costco! I add a packet of their grilled chicken bites for extra protein and some frozen stir fry veggies for extra veg, and it’s the perfect meal.

I will be grabbing all of those things next Costco trip. THANK YOU, Cynthia and I hope your Wednesday is off to a wonderful start!

Treadmill is 100% harder! Also you ran where I run basically every day! Love the Murdock 🙌🏼

NO WAY! I wish I would have seen you. Such a gorgeous area. Have the best day, Keri!

Can you link that headband ear warmer I see you wearing a lot lately, and the tights you have on today ( lulu I believe) are they warm for cold weather early runs?! Thank you thank you ☺️

HEY JESS! YES!! I love this ear warmer so much:

They are not fleece-lined, but I would wear them at 15 degrees F and above, so I definitely think they are warm. Hope you have a wonderful day, Jess!

I’m so happy you added that last point – it’s so easy to compare ourselves, but we definitely need to remember that so many influencers have the time because it is their job. <3

YES YES YES!! And I have to remind myself of this when it comes to cooking/DIY/etc influencers… you’d think I would realize it right away since it is the same thing for me! It’s a good motivator when I don’t want to run that I need content haha. Hope your day is a great one, Tamara!

The book I want to write one day is about my mom. I want the book to be able to be read from both directions. From the front, you can read all about her amazing athletic accomplishments, from the back cover the story is what it was like to be a daughter living with a mother in that lifestyle.

Have a great day. Hope you got to run at 9:30 again!!

I just want to say you are amazing. Your positivity is truly INFECTIOUS!!!!
Food poisoning twice– once with my whole family when I was young after mcdonald’s (which we got SO rarely anyway ha) and once when I was overseas. Coming back from Ecuador with food poisoning was not cool and made me very nervous to fly ha.
I don’t have a Costco near me (2h away) but I get a lot of dry goods online, so it’s usually more snack-type foods. I love the everything bagel chips!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately…when I was working full time and running marathons and ironman triathlons all of the time, I was also training all the time, and my wife put up with it….how on earth did that work….maybe now is the payback?….I had friends that would cover shifts for me, my bosses were supportive to a point…..and I had a lot of help from people that thought I was crazy……I have no idea how that was….and would kind of like to get back to that…..just think it worked because, well, I wasn’t always just active with me and my friends, when I was training the whole fam had t be active too…..it became a family lifestyle….

Thanks for the reminder. I’ve run several halfs, but I’m thinking to try and do a marathon this year. That said, I’m already stressing about how to fit it into my life with a full time job and kids. Also, I’m totally jealous of Seville. I spent some time there this summer with the family (after doing study abroad there 20 years ago…) and it was so much fun!!

I got giardia when I was in Bolivia a few years ago. I’d got to La Paz and instantly got sick, so I assumed it was altitude sickness. When I finally went to the hospital they kept me there for four days.

I also got food poisoning from Red Robin a couple of years ago. It was Christmas Day, my son had born extremely premature and was 9 days old. He was my first baby, so I had no idea what the post-partum process was supposed to look like and I was laying on the couch in the nicu not able to move. I had no idea if this was part of the whole birth process or I was having crazy complications or if I needed to walk down the hall to the ER. I was so happy when my husband got it too! Worst Christmas Ever.

This is a great topic! This is why I get up so dang early and run in the dark most days :) Also, I try and do some of my husband’s and my kids’ hobbies with them too.

I have never had food poisoning or a parasite, knock on wood!! My husband has had food poisoning twice and it was absolutely horrific.

I love most of Costco’s quick meals, they have some great gluten free ones in their deli and they are life savers! There’s a coconut curry one that my entire family loves.

What is it you use for your greens smoothie again?

I went to Mexico with a friend for a mom’s getaway- we both got sooo sick. She eventually got tested and was positive for BOTH E Coli and giardia. I felt exhausted for months. Definitely will be avoiding Mexico for a loooong time! It just felt kind of cruel to finally be taking some time for myself and to come back and feel so awful.

Trader Joe’s has so many good quick freezer eats. A family favorite is the BBQ Teriyaki Chicken. I usually add some veggies and their freezer brown rice. It comes together quickly. Another favorite is breakfast burritos for dinner.
