Brooke’s Epic Race Recap + Family Dinner at OUR House!

Today I have a race recap from BROOKE to share with you!  I uploaded the pictures to the post and then Brooke told me what to say for each picture to explain her amazing Saturday 1k Race Experience (a new distance PR for her I might add).

“I went running.  I got new running clothes.

DSC05573

I was getting ready for the race and there were SO many people.  I went on dada’s shoulders.

DSC05430

We were taking a picture with my friends.  They runned too.

DSC05423

It got really hot and I was thirsty.  I runned with mom.

DSC05545

I was fast and I was holding mama’s hand.  I have a watch.

DSC05525

I was with Dada.  My friends were there.

DSC05500

We got medals and drinks.

DSC05585

and TREATS!!!!!!  They tasted like strawberries and sugar.

I love Knox and we have a dog.”

So there you have it folks… there is Brooke’s race recap to go along with the pictures we took of her race. She had a good afternoon and isn’t it fun to share the things you love with the people you love!!!

Not going to lie… Brooke’s and my race recaps are pretty darn similar:)  You can find mine from Saturday HERE!

PS her race was free and they each got bibs and medals at the end!

And now for a little Sunday recap!

DSC05592

We started off the morning with a breakfast of champions, Frosted Mini Wheats and peaches.  I truly think that Brooke’s strong love (she is the one that always requests it) for this cereal stems from when I was pregnant with her and ate it twice a day;)  I tell her that and she giggles.

IMG 7817

We almost got a selfie complete with all six eyes before going to church.

DSC05603

We go to church for three hours and for the last portion I taught the teen girls which I LOVE doing.

IMG 7825

When you place food differently on a plate it makes it look way more fancy;)

IMG 7827

Last night our family came over for a barbecue.  The key to a good salad in my opinion is to always have more toppings than pieces of lettuce.

IMG 7834

We are really into the Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats these days and I brought them back again last night… I accidentally used a 16 ounce bag of marshmallows instead of 10 and it made them even better.

IMG 7848

My sister’s boys had a light saber competition.  PS her little one is only three lbs behind the older one now… he is catching up!

IMG 7850

These two ended Brooke’s night with a piano lesson.

DSC05607

Andrew and I finished the night by watching Non-Stop and I liked it a lot!

Time to get running again!  The beauty of half-marathons compared to marathons for me—>  I start back running again right after the half-marathon (whether I’m racing or not)… with the marathon (no matter what pace I go) I have to take some serious time off!  Anyone reading able to bounce back after a marathon quickly?

———————————————————————————-

What was the best part about your weekend!?!

What is your current favorite amount of miles to run daily?

-I love the 7-8 range… it’s the perfect amount of time for me to be out there doing what I love doing without being gone for too long.

I would love to hear about any other good Rice Krispie special recipes or add-ins to Rice krispie treats… please share if you have any!

How many days do you usually take off after different race distances?

It looks like Brooke had a blast!

Best part of the weekend was definitely our family dinner!

8 is about perfect for me right now!

I usually try and ease back in to run the same amount of time that I tapered. However, if it was an easy race (i.e. my last 1/2) then I pretty much just jump back in ;)

Brooke’s recap is greatness :) I’m with you when it comes to half-marathon training and being able to keep the training going after the race rather than taking a lot of time off like after a marathon. When I’m in shape and normal training, I usually take a day or two off after a half and then get back at it.

My sister and I were in California over the weekend, so the best part was definitely spending time with her, especially the biking along the beach and the beach picnic on the lifeguard stand.

Held a crow pose in yoga yesterday! That was the highlight for sure. Also went to my friends baby shower which was fun.

I’ve just been in injury mode so long I forgot how much time I take off after a race.

Reply

So stinkin’ precious. I hope you show this post to Brooke in 10 years.

Reply

My favorite right now is five miles. It’s long enough that I feel like I’ve accomplished something, and short enough that it doesn’t take me forever to get it done. I’m back before it gets too hot!

Brooke’s race recap is so sweet! It’s only a matter of time before we see her blog popping up :-)

Ha Brooke’s race Recap was adorable and it sounds like that was a very well organized kids race. I’m glad it was such an ideal weekend for your family.

I ran my first 5k back this weekend which was hilly but it was still fun.

Reply

I feel like I am suddenly picking 6 mile runs as my happy weekday distance! I love Brooke’s recap – so cute.

Reply

I LOVE BROOKE’S RACE RECAP! That is just about the cutest thing and made me smile so big this morning.

It was so, so hot and miserable in Michigan this weekend, so the best part of my weekend was getting to do nothing but lay around in my parents pool with my family yesterday afternoon.

Reply

Aww congrats to Brooke!! Soon she will be out running you hah ;) best part of my weekend was spending time with friends that I hadnt seen in a while!

Reply

Oh my goodness, that race recap is too cute. I just picture a little voice transcribing the post to you “I hold mamas hand…”. Too sweet and what great memories.

Well I dont run every day or I’ll get injured but for my mid week runs, my sweet spot is 5 miles.

Best part of the weekend-too many fun things to count but hubs, 9yo daughter and I enjoyed a 90 minute bike ride along a river trail late on Saturday afternoon/early evening before we enjoyed a bbq outside on our patio. That was a highlight for me.

This was so cute! Love Brooke’s recap!

Best part of my weekend was going for a 7 mile run on Saturday where I left my house at 6am to beat the heat…but when I was done, I went kayaking with friends! So really, Saturday as a whole was a great day.

I think my favorite range is between 5-7 miles, although it’s been SUPER hot here (it was 74 when I woke up at 445am today) so sometimes I have to struggle through shorter runs and call it good depending on the temps.

I’ve never done a full marathon, but for the half marathons I’ve done, I’ve taken about 5 days off – usually the weekdays and then get back into it on the weekend. I can’t NOT workout though, so I usually only take a couple rest days and then do some strength training.

Hershey’s makes some caramel sea salt baking chips – they can sometimes be tough to find – but I made rice krispie treats with those, white chocolate chips, and a little extra marshmallow thrown in. They were decadent tasting, but SUPER easy.

Amazing job Brooke! So crazy how fast she is growing! 7 miles is before work is ideal for me. I did two half marathon training back to back this spring without a break and although I felt great now I have to admit that it was a lot for my body to handle. Live and learn ;-)

I love Brooke’s recap!! It looks like you had a great weekend! The best part of my weekend was riding my bike yesterday. And packing…not because I like to pack, but that means that vacation is coming up!

Brooke’s recap was so darn cute! She seemed like she really enjoyed the race. She’s taking after you Janae!

I broke up candy bars and put them in rice crispies. I think I’ve done Twix and snickers, and then put chocolate on top. Nothing too fancy but enough to make everyone want them more.

Reply

i love brook’s recap and i seriously don’t think she could get any cuter!!! i love that she even has a running watch <3 – family dinners are the best! and all of your food looks amazing (totally agree about the salads! haha)

best part of my weekend was spending time with my man outside doing some adventuring, laying the sun, our fish fry supper on sunday night and a trip to DQ!

lately my runs have been between 3 and 5 mostly and aiming to increase my mileage with one longer run each week 6-7 miles for the longer run and increasing that long run by a mile or so each week! decided to sign up or a ten miler this fall so its time to put on more mileage! enjoying some lifting in the meantime too (which i used to hate) but if you do circuits its fun!

Brooke’s race recap made my day!

Brooke’s recap is amazing! She had such a good time. She’ll be running marathons before you know it ;)

I’m in Orlando and the best part about my weekend was hitting up Harry Potter World (I know Andrew will appreciate that haha) Bucket list item = checked!

However, I am not looking forward to running in this humidity. I’ve been sticking to the hotel treadmill, but I have a 5K fun run tomorrow and it’s gonna be steamy. At least it’s just three miles!

Reply

Brooke’s race recap was the cutest!!! Great job Brooke! Oh, and Janae, sounded like you had such a fun race yourself on Saturday! I love doing a couple races for fun in the middle of training for something “bigger.” It just helps me remember that running is really fun! Sometimes I forget that when I am training hard and really focused on a specific race and finish time ;)
Best part of the weekend was dinner last night, at a great little local pizza place. We had a busy weekend, plus we wanted to celebrate our oldest son earning his lifeguard certification! Woo hoo! He’ll now have his first real job!
My favorite mileage for a run is somewhere between 6 and 9. However, since I’ve been in a cast on my right hand since Mother’s day, I’ve been keeping my runs to 3 to 5. Counting down the days until the cast comes off and I can get in some good longer runs!
Happy Monday, and have a great week :)

Reply

Ok Brook’e recap just might be the best thing I’ve ever read! What a CUTE girl! You are such a good role model for her and I admire you for that, I hope to be the same for my daughter! Thanks Janae:)

Reply

Well you just made me smile! Thank you Kami… that means a lot to me! Enjoy your day, I hope it is a beautiful one for you!

Reply

I actually laughed out loud at Brooke’s race recap- it was perfect! Good job, Brooke! The best part of my weekend was relaxing outside in the sun and reading my book! I read The Couple Next Door thanks to your recommendation! I LOVED It! Every time I thought it was “over”, another surprise happened! Soooooo good.
My favorite miles per day is 4. It is the perfect distance because I feel like I got a workout in but isn’t as mentally draining.
I hope you have a great Monday!!!!

Reply

I will tell her Ashley… THANK YOU:) I am so glad that you loved that book… IT’S CRAZY RIGHT!?!?! I hope your Monday is amazing too!!

Reply

So I HAD to make the salted caramel Rice Krispies after reading about them here! I LOVED them and they will be a frequent at our house also!! The more marshmallows the merrier ? Way to go Brooke! My favorite part of the weekend was getting to hold and cuddle with my new nephew and attending a wedding!!

Reply

I am SO happy that you loved them Laurie!! I agree on your marshmallow observation! YAY for a new nephew and a wedding:) I hope your Monday is a great one!

Reply

Brooke’s race recap was so cute! love it.

Reply

Thanks Meesh! I hope you have an awesome week!

Reply

Great race, Brooke! I love that she had friends who “runned” with her ;)

Our family Rice Krispie treat is over the top. Topped with melted chocolate and butterscotch chips. I always thought my Mom was the creator of it, but it’s on the Rice Krispie’s website so she must have found it on a box one time (we’ve been eating this long before the internet!) Chocolate Scotcheroos for the win! http://mcmomentsandmemories.blogspot.com/2009/12/friday-foodie-christmas-baking-edition.html (this link contains a bunch of my Christmas baking recipes, but it’s the only place where I had the recipe)

Reply

Those sound AMAZING… so does the Sweet Potato Crunch… I NEED! Thank you Kathy:) Hope your Monday is an amazing one Kathy!

Reply

Brooke’s race recap is adorable!

I went on a terrible date to go see Non-Stop when it first came out. Thankfully that was the last bad date I went on, because my next one was with my current boyfriend of 3 years!

Reply

Everything is adorable through the eyes (and voice) of a child–great recap from Brooke!

Had a great time at the pool with my son (almost 9 y.o.).

Love to run 5-7 miles, but I always like longer races (>10).

My kids love Coco Krispies or Coco Puffs marshmallow treats! Sprinkle mix-ins are always fun + cutting them into shapes with cookie cutters :)

Reply

Well we are going to have to try the coco krispies or coco puffs asap! Love the sprinkle/cutting idea too! THANK YOU! So glad you had a fun time at the pool and I agree with you on liking longer races! I hope you have a great Monday Corey!

Reply

Great job, Brooke, thanks for the race recap! I hope you’re all recovered. I like your medal!

Totally agree with your salad ratio of toppings to lettuce and one simple thing I’ve added to rice krispie treats before is cinnamon. I need to try those salted caramel ones!

Reply

CINNAMON!!? Okay.. that is a brilliant idea and I’m totally going to try that! Thanks so much Michelle and I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Reply

YAY BROOKE! Looks like you had a super fun race and earned a very nice medal! Excellent!

Janae that rice krispie pic of you and your Sissy and her little guy…wow he looks identical to her hubby!

Reply

Jade… I TOTALLY agree with you! I tell them that all of the time… they look so similar! I hope you are having an amazing day!

Reply

I love making rice krispie treats with other types of cereal (honey nut cheerios is my favorite)!!

Reply

I’ve never thought of trying honey nut cheerios… brilliant! Thanks Katrina!

Reply

I love Brookes recap. It’s the best. You got yourself a future marathoner

Reply

I agree:) Thank you Patty!

Reply

Her recap is awesome! How neat that she got a bib and a medal. As for me, half marathons aren’t too bad to come back from. I’ve only done one marathon and it took about a week to walk normally, lol. I know some people take a couple of days and bounce back. Maybe I’ll be the same after my next one?

Reply

OMG. Brook’s recap was so adorable!

Reply

FMW!!!!
Never have a bowl of those without thinking of you.
Hope loves them too. In fact she just requested her first cereal suicide with these and life.

Reply

And now I think about you TOO! Oh I am so happy Hope has such good cereal tastes:) We should all eat a bowl each day at the exact same time because it would feel almost like we were eating together!

Reply

Janae, this is the most adorable post ever!! I audibly “d’awwwww!!”ed hehe. How wonderful to get to share your love of running and races with Brooke. :)

Reply

Oh thank you Kelly:) She was so excited! I hope you are having a wonderful day Kelly!

Reply

Her race recap might be the cutest thing ever! She’s adorable! I can’t wait to have little ones to run with me!

Best part about my weekend was a yummy Sunday dinner from the crockpot! :) (I live quite the exciting life! haha!)

I think my favorite amount of miles per day is around 3-5ish for right now. I’m about to hopefully increase my mileage here soon to start training for another half!

I can’t ever seem to make Rice Krispies the right way! They always turn out too hard! :/ BUT i love to eat them when someone else makes them for me!! Such a good snack!

After my half marathons I usually take 4-5ish days off. After my marathon I definitely took a few weeks off to recover.

Reply

Brooke’s recap is probably the greatest race recap, ever. Looks like she had a blast and what a fun kid’s race!

Trying to get back to my favorite 6-8 mile range and the ability to run a half whenever I want after marathon recovery and getting sick. Good thing the summer weather makes getting outside easier!

One of my favorite rice krispies add ins is a 1/4 cup cake mix (yellow or white) w/ the melted marshmallows and then sprinkles for a funfetti cake batter rice krispies treat. Now that I think about it, some funfetti frosting on top for a little extra would be fun too.

Reply

Go Brooke!! Congrats on your big race! :)

Idea for really good marshmallow treat type things … Use Golden Grahams and mix in peanut butter and Nutella. SO good. Basically all you do … Melt a little margarine, lots of peanut butter, Nutella, and marshmallows in a bowl. And then one it’s hot/liquidy enough, stir in Golden Grahams. You’ll thank me later :)

Reply

Oh my goodness cutest race recap ever!!! :)

Reply

Yay, Brooke… congratulations! What a great race and so much fun!

Reply

Her race recap melts my heart. ADORABLE!! :)

Reply

Brooke’s recap is amazing!!

Reply

My favorite distance right now would be anything without the jogging stroller. I do love running with Jules, but it is SO HOT and muggy in Florida right now and the stroller really makes it so much more difficult! Brooke’s race recap is adorable!

Reply

Best race recap ever!! Congratulations Brooke!!

Reply

What an awesome recap! I love the randomness … I love Knox … We have a dog. Too cute! Congrats Brooke!
So, the best part of my weekend was my husband coming to the finish line of my first marathon with my boys and then we all went out to lunch. Sounds so simple but he’s only come to one other race (my first half marathon) and we haven’t been out to a restaurant as a family in years! It was awesome sharing that part of my life with them. My boys have seen me come home from a run and hear me talk about running all the time but to have them be a part of it was the best feeling EVER!
My favorite distance might be 6 miles because I don’t have to get up crazy early (just the norm 4:30 am), my favorite out and back is 6 miles and I can fit in a good tempo/fartlek/interval run in those miles.

Reply

YOUR FIRST MARATHON!?!?! HUGE huge huge congrats! I am so excited for you. Which marathon was it? I know exactly what you are saying about how amazing it is to share that part with your people! 4:30… you are officially my hero! Recover well Jenny!

It was The Light at the End of the Tunnel Marathon in WA. We ran along an old railroad that has since been converted into a really nice trail with crushed and compact gravel. We got to run 2.3 miles through a tunnel that still has the old railroad call boxes and other railway stuffs along the walls; the railroad tracks have been covered with dirt and because it’s dark and damp its compact mud with small puddles. The views were amazing because we were running along the side of the mountain with view of the cascades on one side and waterfalls and rock climbers on the other side. It’s a net downhill course also which made it so perfect for a first marathon (less painful) and it’s also a BQ course!

Reply

Her race recap is amazing!! I ran a marathon last Sunday and was back on the bike the next day (super easy). Ran easy on Wednesday and started really riding hard on Thursday. Ran today (1 week out) for 4 miles of trail at a decent pace.
I ran the marathon at my sister’s pace (mostly) which is a couple minutes slower than I run. Took a 20 minute break in the middle waiting for her. I think that made it easier to bounce back pretty quick ;)

Reply

I think Brooke does a great race recap! I usually prefer 6 or 7 miles…..for me that is about an hour of running. In the summer though, sometimes 4 is all I can handle…………today it was 91 degrees…….yikes!
For my full marathons I took 5-10 days off afterwards, most halfs I only do 2 or 3…….this past week after my half though I only got in a 6 mile and a 7 mile…….busy work week……..but I was glad to get those in!

Reply

this is so cute!
I recently found my new years resolution form when I was 4, and it was (obviously) written in my mom’s handwriting, and said “my resolution is to learn to write so I can write my own resolution next year!”
it won’t be long til Brooke’s taking over!
One positive of being injured was that I had tons of extra time to spend with my family this weekend! I feel like I caught up with everyone, it was wonderful!
I love a 5-6 mile jog, typically! It’s challenging without being repetitive, and it’s not so long that you have to really prep and stress over it.
After a half I usually take 2 days of full rest, then i hit a yoga class on day 3, maybe a spin class on day 4, and try out an easy 3-mile jog on day 5 or 6. For a full I legit wait until i feel like running again!

I just adore this so much!

I love Brooke’s race recap. So glad she had a good time. I run with elementary school age girls in the Girls on the Run program and love seeing what running does for them!

Please do more blog posts including Brooke’s description of photos. I think it would go over well. Her comments are adorable and perfect and she’s the sweetest.

I like 5 miles but want to start averaging 6.

I love this post so much. It is so lovely to hear Brooke’s experience. My best part to me weekend was seeing my best friend, her husband and their beautiful daughter. I have really missed them so it was so good to see them.
My fav amount of miles is 6 to 8 although I am only at 3 at the moment.

There was a kid I went to high school with whose mom would make chocolate rice krispie treats with the chocolate version and fruity pebble rice krispie treats. I need to get the stuff to make the salted caramel ones. Those sound so good!
