I will. Mixed emotions. How we weekended.

(Pants, shirt, shoes)

Eleven miles @ 8:34 pace, I am now OFFICIALLY in the taper.   I have welcomed it with open arms.  Very open arms, ha.

However, on Saturday, during my run, I was thinking about how sad it is that I won’t be running this high of mileage again until late in the summer when I want to start marathon training again.   Feeling two very different emotions at the same time is something I’ll never get used to.

Eighty miles for the week, and the first time I’ve done that since Boston training last year.  PS I am already having Boston FOMO.

IMG 2171

I have dealt with the taper tantrums since I started marathoning in 2010.

For my first marathon, I decided to take the entire week of the marathon off from running.  I’m not sure why I chose to do that, but there wasn’t a lot of information online about marathoning, so I just assumed that feeling extra extra rested before the race would be the best plan.  My plan for this marathon has me running 21 miles leading up to the race, but I’m unsure if I will hit that because of travel and the kids.  Who knows, maybe I’ll take off the whole week like I did for my first marathon;).

Either way, I know what to expect during the taper because it happens to me every time:

*I will think I have an injury even though it isn’t an injury.  The drop in mileage always makes my body cranky.  I’m sure I’ll go in to have whatever injury I think I have looked at because I’ll be positive that my hips/knees/feet/hamstring are falling apart.

*I’ll start a new hobby.  I will have all of this extra energy from the drop in mileage and decide to create a new me… I’ll probably even waste money on this new hobby only to find myself dropping it as soon as I’m running again like normal.

*I’ll get a cold.  It might all be in my head; it might not.  We will never know.

*I will also be able to hear every sneeze or sniffle within a mile radius and do everything I can to go the other way.

*I’ll look over my Strava over the last few months each time I doubt myself.   At least one run will have me questioning how I’ll run a 2:XX marathon when five miles at an easy pace feels incredibly hard.  Looking at all the workouts leading up to the race always helps me regain confidence.

*I’ll get ticked off over something that usually wouldn’t bother me because the taper doesn’t always make us nice people.

*I will not be doing a carb depletion.  I am still shocked that I lived through that experience twice in 2019.

*I will use this carb-loading calculator and stick to it like glue.

*I will listen to any and every podcast that Deena Kastor is on because her mental game and gratitude are unmatched.

*I will delete my weather app because I know I’ll be stressing out anytime the weather raises a degree;)

As challenging as the taper can be, it pays off to do it right (source):

We celebrated my nephew’s birthday over at my sister’s house.

My mom’s lasagna hit the spot.

Have a great Monday.

Ok but I REALLY thought I was getting sick before Indy last year (but didn’t)!!
I love 2 particular episodes of I’ll Have Another for pre-race: Deena Kastor which was re-released early October 2023 and Diljeet’s episode. (I love all her episodes for the record!!) Also, Diljeet’s athletes this weekend!!! That woman is amazing!
Yesterday I put on my Saucony Endorphin Pros for the first time since my marathon. I felt out of control the first 1/4 mile because they were so bouncy. hahhahah
This weekend I learned that it costs no less than $200 to ship a 1 pound package to Slovenia!!
Finally…it’s trials week!!! What do you want me to bring to the viewing party? heheh

Hahaha you are not alone in those thoughts! Off to add both of those! My training partner is really good friend’s with Diljeet and hangs out with her a few times a week. Isn’t that crazy?! The Endorphin Pros are back in action! Two. Hundred. Dollars. Ummmmm Molly, what?!? Happy trials week and you know I’ll have you bring sourdough and some Alison recipe:)

I have been following you for well over a year now, but now all your content resonates with me in such a different way because I am training for my first half marathon. So now I eat up everything little tangent, tidbit and advice. You are the only female runner I know, even if it’s only on the internet. :)
The this weekend I ran a 10K PR, by almost 5 mins! it was wild! My body felt so good it just went for it. I can’t wait and will probably be asking a million more questions as I get more along here. But to start, I am Shannon, I’ll be 40 this April and I have 2 daughters, 3.5 and almost 5. The only thing I ever ran in my life prior to kids was late, so this is a new lifestyle for me. Thank you for all your content!

SHANNON!! Your first half marathon. Oh my goodness, I am thrilled for you and congrats on your 5 min 10k PR! That is huge. Your comment made my day. Your story! Keep me updated with all of the things and your training and I’m here for any and every question you have!

SOOO healthy that you’re so mentally aware of what happens during a taper and have a few strategies in place to tackle the challenges! GO JANAE! =]

Highlight– had Enso’s bday party at a fire station. One of the firefighters gave a tour, let the kids in the truck, etc. Those kids were soooo happy! Which of course made me so happy.

Two emotions: being overwhelmed and being immensely grateful. The “problems” that make me stressed are actually because I’m very blessed– I am fortunate to afford activities and clothes for my kids that make the house look like a tornado ran through; I have healthy kids that can make lots of noise (all at once, ha), etc. Have a wonderful start to your week, friend!

Enso’s birthday party sounds so magical! Oh Beck would have been in heaven, I’ll have to do something like this for him. I relate completely with those two feelings at once. We are so lucky but somedays we feel like we have nothing left to give. I get it and I’m sending you hugs and love!

Oh my goodness, Beck is looking so grown up these days.
Ahahaha… The terrible tapers. I definitely think I’m coming down with a cold or something. And if I have any kind of twinge or niggle, I panic. Only once I got a cold, and it was very minor.
I need to read/listen to some Deena! She is inspiring and is so mentally strong.
Heading into a very busy day and week. But also feeling motivated.
Have a great day Janae

Right?! I swear he will be in Kindergarten before I know it. PANIC is the correct term with my taper experience too haha. Good luck this week, Wendy! YOU’VE GOT THIS!

Good luck on your taper! If you’re worried about getting sick I highly highly recommend getting a vitamin IV before you travel. I’ve gotten several when I was surrounded by sickies and knock on wood, I never got sick. Where I live we have places you can just pop in for all sorts of IVs – I usually go with the high dose Vit C, it takes about 30 min, it gives me a huge energy burst for the next day or so and it works like a charm every time to help my immune system fight off whatever is coming at it!

Maria. I walked by one of these places the other day and was wondering. Okay, I am absolutely going to try it. Thank you for sharing, and I hope you have a beautiful day!

The taper!! For the last 5 years and probably 5 marathons, my left ankle gets cranky. Like, it feels like something is catching. It doesn’t hurt with each step, but when it hurts it hurts a lot. I’ve seen a podiatrist and he has x-rayed it and used ultrasound and didn’t see anything besides inflammation so now he just prescribes me steroids and I take about a week off and then I’m good for the marathon. I finally insisted on an MRI because it happened with my last marathon, was great during the race, but was then super painful for the next week or so. Lo and behold, I have two cists in my front ankle joint; hence, something catching. There are also a few other things that need to be dealt with, but until I have surgery, I know that I need a longer taper and probably an entire week off with steroids before the race. Crazy.

A huge highlight for the weekend was attending the 49ers/Lions game with my husband! We’ve both been fans since we were kids and this was the first and probably only championship game we’ve attended. It was so much fun!

That dang ankle! TWO CISTS. I am so glad you figured out what was going on, this whole process must have been so frustrating. When will you end up having surgery? I bet you guys had the absolute best time! So happy for you both!

The doctor said I can do it whenever I want, and since I am hoping to register for NYC and Boston 2025, my plan is to do it after that. He said at least I know what to expect pain-wise. I will just make sure to wear an ankle brace with every single run.

Hello taper!! I brought my masks back out for busy places like the grocery store and post office to ward off the 1 million sneezes I swear were targeted at me 😆
Highlight of the weekend was driving an hour down to the valley to run on clear trails in 60 degree weather. it felt like heaven. I also stopped at Trader Joe’s and found a new favorite – the Brown Sugar and Cardamom Buns. So delicious!!

Reply

Ummm that is brilliant. Off to go find ours. Thank you, Michelle. That sounds like the absolute perfect day. Next time, I’m meeting you for that run… 60 degrees! I will grab that next time I am there. Have a beautiful day!

“I’ll get a cold. It might all be in my head; it might not. We will never know.” Hahaha you are hilarious! I love it so much. But I’m that way with sneezes and sniffles all of the time, it’s so cringey! Ooh that graham canyon looks so good, I haven’t had it in forever I might need it. Have you been to TRUreligion for breakfast? I feel like that might be a good taper activity for you! Also dead serious if you had a trials marathon watch party I would come. ;)

Hi Janae, I’m not your typical follower but I do enjoy reading your posts. I really like the down to earth feel of your blog. =)

I just finished my first 100 miler in 29 hours and felt so proud. It was a flat one but still…. I ran 13 very technical and steep miles Saturday – and was so slow after training flat for months. I almost fell like 10 time tripping on my own feet. Hoping to get back to elevation running this spring. Training for R2R2R in April and maybe some mountains across the pond in 2025.

Anyways, the taper worry I have is gaining weight. Like I always worry I’ll put on 5 pounds and barely cross the finish line because I’m not training as hard and will lose my fitness in 2 weeks.

I hope you and your family are doing well.
