Friday Favorites! Send Help.

75 minutes on the bike at an effort that brought my heart rate to where it usually is for an easy run.

I jumped on the Peloton later in the day than usual because…

It feels like we have a newborn again.  Due to Beck now being able to climb out of his crib, he came in and woke us up four times to go and play trains with him.  Send help.

We are hoping that compression socks will start helping with the swelling.

My mom took Skye out for a pre-birthday celebration. She was in heaven.

And we made this homemade ramen for dinner, which was so good on a cold evening.

Here’s to hoping that dropping the mattress in Beck’s crib will prevent Beck from hanging out with us all night.

Let’s jump into some Friday Favorites:

*My gift guides are here, here and here!

*This book.  I listened to it at this time last year and have started to listen to it again now.  It is the most calming book that shows the beauty in the change of seasons and to lean into what winter can do for our healing.

*Just a trend that I promised myself I wouldn’t fall into, but now it is my favorite trend ever, and I never want to stop wearing flares for the rest of my life.  These jeans.  They are stretchy as can be, and the comfort feels like leggings, but they are jeans.  I sized down one from my regular size (due to the reviews) and hope to collect a pair in every color someday.  You can get them here or here.

*Running turtlenecks. My worst nightmare during the warm months, but my new best friend during these cold months. If my core isn’t warm, I am miserable, and these help keep the core toasty.

*I am almost speechless when it comes to these.  The absolute perfect ratio of PB and chocolate shell is on the shelves at your local grocery store.

*Good luck to everyone running CIM! I still need to get back there because the course and race are incredible. You can read my race recap HERE!

My birthday is actually today! Took the day off work – we will see if that really happens.
I actually tried those mini PB M&Ms at a trade show a couple of months ago and LOVED them!

For the crib thing – our daughter could get out no matter what level the mattress was at so we had to switch to a toddler bed very early (we were worried for her safety). We were scared what she might get into if she kept getting out of her room so we turned her door knob around to lock it at night. We always had the monitor on in case we needed to get in there but honestly, it was just to make sure she stayed safe. It worked and she stopped trying to escape, even when we stopped locking it.

I was about to comment the same thing! Our pediatrician recommending locking our daughter in her room. At first I was like “but what about a fire!?” and then she pointed out that if they can’t get out of a crib it’s the same thing as locking them in their room. We did the same thing as Jessica and flipped the door handle but I have a few friends who put baby gates in front of the door instead. It worked really well for us. It’s a lot easier to totally toddler proof a bedroom than your whole house if they get out of their room in the middle of the night. It won’t stop him from waking up, but it might help him to go back to sleep on his own to know that even if he’s up, he can’t come out of his room yet. Our daughter is now 3.5 and we don’t lock her door anymore. I’d definitely recommend it as a way to keep them safe at night. Plus, if there is a fire, you will know exactly where to find them (which our doctor also pointed out).

That makes SO much sense. Especially the part about knowing exactly where to find them if there is a problem and I worry so much about what he will get into roaming around the house with us asleep. Thank you for sharing so much!

Jessica. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Oh this makes me so happy:). Enjoy every second and I’ll eat some cake to celebrate you. I think a December 1st birthday just sounds so great. Okay, this is so relieving to hear because I am SO worried about him getting hurt because we are all fast asleep while he is roaming the house in the middle of the night. I’m going to try this. Thank you so much for the help!

I love the flared jeans but I’m so short! I need to find some. TODAY is my birthday!! Happy twin birth month, Skye!!!

Tess. Happy happy birthday! I hope today is absolutely perfect for you and I’ll eat some cake to celebrate you. It’s Jessica’s bday too (right above you in the comments) and I told her too that I just think 12/1 birthdays sound so cool:). Have the best day!

I’m excited for CIM!! I really hope Allie Kiefer finishes the marathon and does well.
The winter book sounds interesting! I feel like January and February need some kind of tradition, colors, fun holidays to make it through.
Would you rather have your kids sleep through the night or to never have to do kid laundry again?

I’m behind on Allie Kiefer, I didn’t know she was running it. Adding her to my tracking list now, thank you. We should make a runner holiday in Jan/Feb? Let’s get a planning meeting going. Oh, without a deep sleep through the night. If I get under 8 hours of sleep, I’m a monster hahah. Happy weekend Molly, hope you get a relaxing one with some new Alison recipes!

I can’t decide between peanut or PB m&ms they are both good! I had caramel m&ms recently and those were ok- not my fav but it was that or regular ones at the airport.

Great idea to read books about appreciating winter and changes in season. I can get down these times of year, especially with the dark.

I fully agree with you on the caramel ones, they have so much potential but just miss the mark… the caramel tastes off to me. Please read this book, it helps me realize that the darkness and slowness of the season is something I need to embrace rather than hate (because naturally I hate it). Let me know what you think and I hope your day is a wonderful one, Mariah!

All my childhood I loved plain M&Ms (and still do), but I reach for Peanut Butter ones almost as often, when I let myself have them. Now I need to try those minis if it’s really the perfect ratio of everything…

You asked about weekend plans. My big thing I am excited about–aside from my workouts and from teaching my class on Sunday morning–is having some of my fellow gym instructor friends over on Sunday night for a big pot of chili and to decorate Christmas cookies. It will really be my first time having friends in our new house. We still have boxes everywhere, but that’s ok–my friends won’t mind. We all know each other because we teach similar Les MIlls formats at the gym (every single one of us teaches BODYPUMP…some also teach BODYBALANCE like I do, others also teach SPRINT like I do, some teach formats I don’t teach like SH’BAM or BODYATTACK…and I am the only one who teaches RPM). And they’ve really become some of my favorite friends I have made since Tom and I moved to Atlanta in 2016! Our lives are all different–but when we have a chance to get together it’s always the best time.

I also got into the flare jeans trend (but baby flares, I guess–on the Nordstrom website, look up their in-house brand, Wit & Wisdom and the “itty bitty flares:). I never thought I would give in to it, or that I would even find a way to make it work since I am so short and a lot of times design details on a piece of clothing just don’t hit me at the right place–but I found a pair that’s super stretchy and super comfy, and when I tried it on during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale I decided to take the plunge and give it a shot. And I have worn the heck out of those jeans since!

I bet Skye is excited for her birthday! And I think it’s great that her birthday is early enough in the month that she can get excited for her birthday and for Christmas as two distinct events. I have two friends born on 12/23, and one born on 12/27, and for them everything becomes a bit of a blur…

Hey Beth! You absolutely need the mini pb ones! Okay, your Sunday night sounds perfect. Can I come over for the chili too. That is so exciting that they will see your new house. I hope you are absolutely loving your new house. Yay for finding the perfect flares… they are just so fun. Absolutely, it just makes December her absolute favorite month of the year. Have a fabulous weekend, Stephanie!

Oh no Beck! I hope he lets you wait until morning to play with trains tonight!
I’ll be consulting your gift guides later today/this weekend as I finally get my Christmas present planning underway (I’m always running late on this!). My 7 year old’s list consists of about 250 different RC Vehicles, and Santa needs a few alternatives to the Remote-Control Vehicle madness! ;)
Those running turtlenecks are truly amazing – I always save mine for the coldest days because they are so warm, especially if you use it as a layer.
My husband and I are the same as you and Andrew on the M&Ms – he prefers peanut and I know that PB are best!

He waited until 5 today hahah! Katie, you are not alone with that. I get my gift guides done long before I get my shopping done hahah. I hope santa got a raise for your 7 year old’s list;). Seriously, it kept me so nice and warm today. Hope you both get your M&Ms soon. Have a great weekend, Katie!

Have you tried an okay to wake clock for Beck? Like a clock (we use a hatch sound machine) that turns green when he’s allowed out of his room? It’ll take a bit of practice and training but it could be helpful. I have a lot of friends who do this with their wondering kiddos. Good luck!

I haven’t yet! Buying one on Amazon now, thank you for the help and I hope you have a beautiful day.

I have a December birthday 12/21 :) December people are a rare breed and I always get a kick out of Skye’s sassy personality!

Happy birthday month. I hope you celebrate all month long. Thank you, she makes our days so interesting haha. Hope you are having a wonderful afternoon, Shelby!

Today is my daughter’s birthday! Sweet 16 :) And I agree with Andrew – peanut is better, specifically Dark Chocolate Peanut M&Ms. Now I’m craving them!

Reply

Happiest birthday to your daughter. Oh, 16 is such a big year. I hope today is perfect for you. You better treat yourself to some of those M&Ms as you celebrate your 16 year old. Thanks Colleen!

My mom’s youngest sister turned 81 today! So happy to still have her in my life. She and my mom were different in many ways, but there are comforting similarities.

Only found in Hawaii – coconut M&Ms! So good! I don’t think I’ve ever tried PB M&Ms, that needs to change.

Reply

Oh wow! 81! That is so great that you still have her and I hope her day is perfect. Bring us all home some coconut M&Ms please. Have a beautiful day, Kathy!

The climbing out of the crib thing is the WORST. Try a sleep sack. That prevented my son from climbing (and you can zip it backwards so he can’t get himself out of it).

Has Andrew tried red light for his swelling? My husband had a similar ankle surgery and red light helped his recovery so much. He started his own company now because he is so passionate about it! https://thealivehive.com/

Reply

It did?!?! Okay, I’m trying the sleep sack and having Andrew try the red light, brilliant. Thank you Torrie!

I’m not sure how old Beck is, but we’ve always transitioned our kids out of the crib at two. Mostly because we have tall kids, ha, but they also sleep in our room until then so it just makes an easy transition right to a bed. So, I’d say if he’s at least that old it might make more sense to just switch to a bed altogether. We’ve always just been pretty firm that you don’t get out of bed until a grownup gets you, and we do use an okay to wake alarm clock and still have a baby monitor. I think my husband slept in the room with our boys for the first week or so, but since then it’s just been the normal occasional wake ups from bad dreams or that sort of thing. I read a book recently called “Let them be little” that discussed how we simultaneously expect kids to grow up faster, while also giving them less actual responsibility. A little bit of a tangent, I know, but it has also changed my perspective a bit about trusting in what my kids are capable of. Good luck on whatever you plan to do, sleep is important!

mini PB M&M’s sounds perfect! I love PB ones but they’re almost too rich (unlike peanut mm’s which are perfection). I think the mini PB ones would go great in a trail mix or a bowl of popcorn. Yum yum yum. Or, they’d be good mixed in a rice crispy treat.

My bday is 12/30. I feel like us December birthday people kinda stick together.

Does the PT office you go to do lymph drainage massage? That might also do wonders for Andrews leg.

Jumping in with a late day comment, because this morning was busy! But I made it through the 1st week of the holiday toy and food drive! It was a good start.
My husband and I are the same with M&M’s! I love the PB and he the peanut.
My workouts this week have been lacking, but that’s ok… I will get back on track.
I am definitely looking forward to a quiet restful weekend. And I am looking forward to getting some shopping done too! But first it’s the neighborhood cookie exchange and breakfast tomorrow morning. Yay. One of my favorite traditions to kick off the holidays.
Hope your Friday has been great!
