Some things to catch up on!

Yesterday’s 5 miles felt horrible= I’m right on track with the taper.

It’s the blurriest photo ever, but Connor Mantz passed by us, and I told him good luck in Chicago this weekend. I predict he will be the 1st American in Chicago and that he will leave with a new, shiny PR (his current PR is 2:08:16).

Andrew got in 16 miles! We thought Hungary would be canceled for Mer’s funeral, but my mom and her siblings decided to do it at the end of this month because the funeral will be held in California, and they needed time to get everyone there.

So, Andrew decided he wanted to get in one more long run before the race. He did great!

I definitely don’t have the appetite I usually do, but I’m forcing a carb load (the best resource is here on carb loading), and I’m thankful for these french toast bagels with pumpkin cream cheese from Bagel Den.

Let’s catch up on a few things:

We had all of the family over for the ultimate comfort food meal. Two of our favorite soups—> chicken noodle soup over mashed potatoes and creamy tortellini.

Does anybody remember them walking on their toes like this when they were little? They can still do it!

Skye wants to be a chef when she grows up, so she made a cake last night.

Our cabinets are almost done, and we love how they turned out.

Out of the blue, he has become obsessed with being a pumpkin for Halloween, so he was thrilled with this purchase.

Expect him to be in this all month:

I still have no idea what shoes to wear.

Jo brought me post-race self-care. Running friends get it.

I hope it stays 55 until 11 a.m. on Saturday🤣 I did absolutely zero heat training this year.  I’ll be stuffing ice down my sports bra the whole race.

Who is running Chicago this weekend? How are you feeling?

Was anyone supposed to run Twin Cities this year?  Were you able to find another race to run (I hope)?

Should I go with adidas or Nike for the race?

Do you enjoy carb loading or not so much?

Hi Janae!
Always look forward to reading your blog posts each morning :) those soups look delicious!! I know it’s been a while, but I actually found your blog through a post you wrote on eating disorders/disordered eating. Could you share with me your story or any other posts you have with the steps you took to overcome it, get your period back, and get back into running? I’m sad to share I have fallen into some unhealthy patterns as I’ve gone through a very stressful 5-6 months, but am on the road to recovery now. Looking for some encouragement and advice!! Anything is helpful.
Thanks so much,
Sydney

Sydney! I am here for you. I am SO so sorry. I wish I could take this pain away for you. I’m going to email you on my drive (Andrew’s driving) down to St. George so expect that soon. Thinking of you!

Thank you. I’ll keep an eye out :) Best of luck this weekend!

What roll recipe do you use?? I saw some in the picture with the soups and wondered if you have one you recommend! 😊

I am not fancy and I just use Rhodes Rolls! Everyone gobbles them up and I just have to let them rise so I definitely recommend them:). Hope your day is a great one, Monica!

I’m spectating Chicago! My husband used to live there so he is able to get us all over the city to catch runners multiple times. Super excited to see the elite women.
I can’t believe you spotted Connor!
Enjoy all this family time. How wonderful that your nephew is back from his mission and be home at this time.

Oh that will be so so fun. I cannot wait to see your stories! Thank you, I agree… we are so glad he is home right now. Sadly, I do have one niece out on her mission right now. I hope you have a beautiful day!

I used to walk like that! My family made such fun of me…
I’m glad that I am not alone. :)

Hahaha no way?! You are definitely not alone now. Have a beautiful day, Rebekah!

I prefer adidas, but go with your heart! Carb loading is the best, that’s one of the perks of being a runner! Or any athlete.

Soooo true! Hope you have a wonderful day, Mariah!

I have to say Adidas!!! (Also I have the same pair/colorway as you in this picture, so I might be biased :) Wishing you luck this weekend, Janae, I will be thinking about you while you’re out there!

They are just SO pretty! Were you tempted at all to get the $250 pair? I was haha. Thank you, Katie. That means a lot! Have a beautiful day!

I’m running Chicago! Excited and Anxious.

I say Adidas! But hopefully you will just KNOW which to wear. I keep changing my mind and just need to pack a pair and let it be!

I find it difficult to carb load as I need to limit gluten – so fewer choices. I find that doing a 3 day window helps me to get in what I need without too much bread/pasta in my system all at once.

I hope you and Andrew both have a great race and a nice few days away.

LC!! I am SO so excited for you! Please let me know how it goes, I want to come run that one someday. Glad I’m not alone with the shoe dilemma. Oh that must be hard when you have to watch your gluten. Thank you!

Cutest little pumpkin ever!

We put my mother-in-law’s memorial service off for a few weeks and it ended up being so lovely. I think it gave us more time to grieve privately, then we were ready to celebrate her amazing life. Les and his siblings all spoke and they were able to honor their mom so beautifully. It also gave extended family time to make travel plans. Mer will be on your mind while you travel to Hungary, but I hope you’ll be able to enjoy the trip.

Thank you for sharing that, Kathy. What a beautiful experience. We know Mer would want everyone to be able to make it so this works out perfectly:). I hope you have a wonderful day!

Since you and Andrew convinced me to finally try the ASICS Novablasts, I vote Asics. The Novablasts are so comfortable. Good luck to everyone running Chicago, it’s still one of my most favorite marathons. The city is magic race weekend.

Oh I am SO happy you are loving them! Aren’t they the best?! Oh I want to run Chicago so bad someday. I hope you have the best day, Jacinta!

My Thursday brain thinking confusing Asics and Adidas 🤦🏾‍♀️. I vote Adidas.

Beck is the cutest pumpkin!
I’m glad you are still doing both marathons. I know it’s been a tough week+ and may still be for the rest of the month, so remember to be kind to yourself too.
Our oldest will be back in Chicago for his college homecoming, and I am slightly jealous I won’t be there to spectate the marathon! The temps look perfect, and hopefully that crazy Chicago wind will play a lot nicely.
I feel like I am back in a running groove after taking the last 2 months basically off while we’ve adjusted to being puppy parents and getting her house trained,… phew!
I have got to remeyto try chicken noodle soup over mashed potatoes! After all the times of you sharing that, I still haven’t tried it yet.
I hope your Thursday is great!

I don’t think you can go wrong with either shoe! I’ve been having a similar debate between the Saucony Endorphin Pros and Nike Vaporfly 2s. I really like them both, but I think I’m leaning toward Nike for race day.

Carb loading feels different when you’re gluten-free, ha. However, I love potatoes and I find things to make it work.

I grew up eating my mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup over mashed potatoes all the time. Really I thought they always just went together until I got married and made my husband my mom’s recipe. He thought it was strange to add mashed potatoes, now he eats it that way too. The key to the yummiest bowl is to have just the right amount of mashed potatoes and broth. Too little broth and it’s potatoes and noodles, too much broth and it’s watered down mashed potatoes. You have to have just the right ratio of the two. I make a big batch of chicken noodle soup and freeze the leftovers. So when my family wants it again I whip up fresh mashed potatoes and it’s a weeknight meal. Glad you’re team CNS over mashed potatoes!
