Labor Day SALES + Training Recap + Weekending!

(shoes, shorts, bra)

The adizero was not made for trail running, but Saturday’s workout included trails and speed on the road, so I decided they were my best bet.  I wore my pair that needs to be retired very soon, and they surprisingly did really well on the trails… I even hit a new PR on this trail.

Twenty miles is always very daunting to me, but because we went from the road to the trails, to the road, back to the trails, and then finished on the roads… the 20 miles flew by because we were constantly switching things up. I’ve completed this 10-mile loop (called the LA Freeway for lactic acid;) before, and it usually makes me very tired, and on Saturday, we did it TWICE.

For the first loop, we pushed the uphills on the trails and then did a 2-mile ‘chill’ tempo downhill on the roads @ 6:19 average, and then for the second loop, we pushed the downhills on the trail and then did a 2-mile ‘hard’ tempo downhill @ 5:44 average.  Saturday was the best I have felt since before Boston this year!

We were lucky not to have to bring any water with us because the loop we had included two water fountains and a stop at our cars.

We went straight for maple bars afterward.  I’m still experiencing blue lips even with my inhalers?!?

Afterward, Knox and Skye asked to run with me, which meant another 1.35 miles.

I couldn’t say no. It was so much fun.

And just a few more pictures from our weekend:

Sushi!

Butter cake from Sol Agave. A Utah must.

This week’s training:

Monday: 11 miles @ 8:32 average

Tuesday: 10 miles @ 7:58 average

Wednesday: A progression within a progression of 3 x 3 miles… The goal was 7:00, 6:45, 6:30 & 6:45, 6:30, 6:15 & 6:30, 6:15, 6:00… We had our friend pace us, and we ended up going faster, but it all felt smooth, so we just followed him–> 6:58, 6:35, 6:20 & 6:34, 6:19, 6:02 & 6:14, 6:07, 5:54! There was a 5ish minute recovery jog in between sets. 14.1 @ 7:01 pace.

Thursday: 10 miles @ 8:10 average

Friday: 7 miles @ 8:33 average

Saturday: 20 miles @ 8:06 pace, 50% on trails and 50% on the roads. Climbed 2400 ft and got some excellent downhill tempo miles in, too. 1.35 miles with Skye and Knox after:)

Ah maple Bars sound delicious!

We do have today off and might take it easy. Might be coming down with something gulp.

We had a super low key low weekend. I persuaded J to drive to point roberts on saturday to pick up a parcel. I got a sweatshirt from sarie marie design and then we went for fish and chips in steveston. River got some too. Yesterday Jason biked and River and I ran. And I spent a couple hours decluttering the closet. Ended up with 2 huge donation bags! And of course was live streaming utmb. Such incredible performances!

Have a great day Janae!

Awesome job on your long run! And I agree, switching from road to trail does make the miles go by much quicker.
I know I have said this before, I am not really a donut person. But if I do get a donut, it has to be a maple bar.
I was able to sneak in a short run on Saturday, and it felt good to run, but it was SOOOO humid! 93% humidity, so it was a hard 3 miles. I do feel like I’m starting completely over with running, which is ok. I will definitely treat myself like a new runner for a while.
No big plans today. Nala was up a lot during the night, so I may even nap today.
Have a great day off.

I’m glad you appreciate the maple bar;). 93%!! That would have killed me. I really think those longer breaks do so much good for us and the big picture. Take the nap! Thanks Wendy, you too:)

We went big on the trail this morning – 15 miles, Les’ longest ever on foot. He’s 5 weeks out from Rim to Rim and I’m proud of my coaching. He’s currently injury free and feeling more confident with each big effort. Now we both need naps! Burgers, fries and s’mores tonight.

Finding a good hat is SO hard. Good luck and have a beautiful day, Caitlin.
