Sunday sights and St. George Marathon Training Week #1

I hope your weekend was a blast.  My weekend included running and ice cream which in my opinion is the perfect equation for a good weekend.

IMG 2039

Sundays are my rest days from exercise so we take it pretty easy over here.

Brooke got to watch some cartoons with my dad after church.

IMG 3140

I went to Sundance ski resort to go walk around for a bit.  When we got up there we saw that the ski lifts were open so we decided to go for a ride.  Next time I want to bring my mountain bike to ride back down:)

IMG 3142

Gold Brooks shoes and a view.  I felt good about it.

IMG 3149

The whole family came by a little bit later (even my brother and his family from out of town) for Father’s Day dinner.  My dad requested taco/taco salads and fruit, he is a smart man.

Tortillas (the TortillaLand ones that you cook yourself), lettuce, Costco mango salsa, chicken (chicken, taco seasoning and water cooked in the crockpot for 8 hours on low), guac, avocado and cheese.

It will be a sad day for me and Brooke when watermelon season ends.

IMG 2043

Brooke and her cousins ate outside.

IMG 2045

And my dad got a really fun picture of me with my plate licked clean.

IMG 2046

For dessert we had Costco berry pie and ice cream goodness.

IMG 2048

To make—>  mix one package of crushed up oreos with about 1/4 cup melted butter.  Press onto the bottom of pan and let it freeze for 30 minutes.  Top with melted hot fudge and freeze for 30 minutes.  Layer on top of the fudge your favorite ice cream (we love the Tillamook mint chocolate chip ice cream) and then top that with whipped cream and a few more oreo crumbles.  Freeze until you are ready to dig in.

The pan was gone in just a few minutes.

IMG 2049

We then all sat around for a while on the couches and yep… I still haven’t put batteries in my clock.

I try to run ‘naked’ at least twice a month.

Perfect weekend, sun and water!

I haven’t been running much with music at all and I go through phases with this. That Oreo pie – oh my. You guys always make the best desserts!

Reply

I never run with music and only my garmin now to track HR. I really could ditch it all together and would probably be happier!

I had a horrible bike accident in HS that took out my front 4 teeth, and ripped a good part of my lip off, 2 weeks after getting my braces removed. So, I’m working on getting over my bike fear to train for a tri post-baby.

Reply

I go technology free a few times a week, though it’s hard to give up my Garmin!

My favorite run last week was my 10 mile because I finally feel back to normal.

I love to bike but haven’t been out yet.

Reply

The first time I did a marathon without music I thought it would be awful, but it was actually pretty nice! I kind of just forgot about it after awhile!

I bike as much as I can, but lately that hasn’t been often! Right now I’m taking some time off after my last marathon to rest before the next marathon!

Your ice cream dessert looks awesome! :)

Reply

I never used to do technology free runs but my new coach has recommended doing them at least one per week so I’ve been giving it a try these last two weeks… And I kind of like them! I think it really helps during those recovery runs after speedwork when you just need to run by feeling and keep it easy.

Reply

I need to make that oreo ice cream cake. I feel like everyone would love me forever if I did. I love running without music and watches some times just because then I can really listen to how my body is feeling.

Sunshine + Ocean = perfect weekend : ) Have a fabulous Monday!

Reply

That ice cream dessert looks soooo good! I am craving delicious soft ice cream now! I have to say I am not a big fan of mind ice cream though… Too cold? :) I actually just wrote a post on meditative/mindfulness runs! I am a big fan :)
My fave run last week was when I came across a park with exercise equipment in it, it turned into a great full body workout! Sounds like you had a great week of working out!

Reply

-I can manage without music on a run, but a run without my garmin is a little rough!
-Good food + family = perfect weekend!
-I do spin at the gym every once in a while…it burns real nice!

Reply

I ran 8 miles by the beach last night and watched the sun set. I skipped music because I thought it might rain but it didn’t and I didn’t even miss the tunes. I enjoyed hearing the rhythm of my feet on the loose gravel trail!
It was my favorite run of the week.
Perfect weekend consists of hanging with my dog and coffee!

Reply

your first run after a terrible mararthon + cheap peonies from the farmers market = the perfect weekend

Reply

those mountains are beautiful! & so is the taco salad :)

getting that first run in after a terrible mararthon last weekend + cheap peonies from the farmers market = the perfect weekend!

Hi Janae!
First, I just want to say that I love your blog! It’s a daily must read for me!
Second, I have a random question — where did you get your kitchen table?!?? Husb and I just bought a house but we have no kitchen table. and from what I have seen of yours, I really like it!

Thanks !

HEY BIANCA!!! Congrats on buying a house… that is awesome! Here is the link:

I love mine!

A great run + family time= a good weekend.

I need to make that ice cream pie ASAP. Although, I think I’ll do peanut butter and chocolate ice cream instead : )

Reply

I’m sad to report that I never run technology free. I used to but no more.
My favorite run was yesterday because my body felt great and I had run on Saturday so that always makes me happy. Doing fun things outdoors + being w/ my husband = the perfect weekend. Yes, I bike! I just did my speed drills on my bike. I don’t mountain bike anymore. Just love being out on the road!!

Reply

I can only do no Naked Runs when I know my route like the back of my hand or else I have no idea how far I am running!

A long run + family/friends/church = the perfect weekend :)

Have a great morning!!

Reply

I never run with music anymore, but I feel like I NEED to wear my garmin. For my Saturday run this weekend it was dead (well it died at mile 2) and I tried not to worry about how far/fast I ran because it was just a slow, easy recovery run, but I still had to go home and track my route. I really need to work on allowing myself to run without technology once in awhile!

Reply

That ice cream looks great… and I think I could make it with gf Joe-Joe’s. Yumz.

Watermelon + Sleeping =a good weekend. This past week I went through 1 mini watermelon each day.

Reply

I often wondered what it would feel like to run without music. I would probably be really slow because I wouldn’t have the beat to keep me on pace!

Reply

I actually had a naked run this weekend!! It was raining so I decided to just go out and run. I only used a watch to track the amount of time I was out there. It was a great 45 minutes! I felt so refreshed when I was finished. I may try to add more technology free runs into my training plans!!

Good job on week 1 of training!! You are killing it already!

Reply

I typically run technology free unless I need track my pace or I’m running a new course and want to know the mileage. My favorite run was Saturday, ran 7ish miles after a few weeks off. Legs were tired but felt great! I need to make that ice cream cake!!!

Reply

YAY for 7ish miles after some time off Di! That is awesome. I agree with you, you need to make that ice cream cake!

Reply

I always run without music except on the treadmill. I haven’t run without my garmin because I like having the data to record afterwards.
Long run + hiking + going to the movies = perfect weekend.
I enjoy riding my bike, but I really new to update my bike.

Reply

Friends+diners=perfect weekend.

HAHA…I guess running too. I’m glad you had a great weekend Janae and I cannot wait to see how your training goes for St. George.

Reply

I feel like you need to come run St. George with me… k thanks. See you soon;)

Reply

My long run was so great. I was in the rain, not the pouring, just a light mist, it was perfect. Celebrating my Dad and Playing fun games outside with the family was the best. I love biking but my husband is all about the Mt. bike!

Reply

I did a speed play run last week that was so challenging but left me exhilarated!

Reply

The views from that ski lift are AMAZING!

My boyfriend coming home for the weekend & Father’s day = the perfect weekend!

Reply

Hello Oreo dessert heaven!!!
I rarely run without my Garmin. Usually it’s because I forgot it!
Fave run last week: Saturday’s long trail run because it was our last long run before next week’s race!
My husband plus the beach equals the perfect summer weekend!

Reply

My family + My backyard = The Best Weekend!

I can’t believe how big your sisters baby is already! I feel like time is flying! My baby girl just turned 5 months old yesterday. How, just how, does time go so slow and so fast at the time time?!!

Reply

I run naked whenever the thought of going for my run stresses me out. I’ll get really anxious before runs sometimes and not worrying about what my watch will say makes me feel a little better.
That ice cream cake looks like thebomb.com. I probably wouldn’t do mint chocolate chip ice cream, but it would be right up my alley with a cookie dough! Or pistachio….yumm!

Reply

haha I have that same clock and never put batteries in it!

Reply

I never run with music, but at least once a wee I have a no-watch run. It’s very freeing.

My best run was my tempo on Saturday. I hit my splits, and it felt great! :)

Froyo + reading at the pool + naps = the perfect weekend.

Reply

My favorite run last week was Saturday morning! No rush to get home! Except in VA it was close to 100 with the heat index. I love to run without music and run and talk with friends. And road biking is so fun!

Reply

Good food + family = the perfect weekend. Lucky me I had both :) My favorite run last week was a technology free run through Central Park. No music, no watch (I don’t own one) and it felt great. Have a great week!

Reply

I just did a run on Saturday with no distance or plan in mind. Just ran to my favorite spot and stopped my music to take in the scenes. It was pretty amazing! Although I did have my music on at some points it was really refreshing to just lace up and run after training so hard for 12 weeks.
Looks like you had a great weekend! Mine was also! Family + sunshine = the perfect summer weekend.

Reply

Ahh! That ice cream pie thing looks so good.

I got in some real good interval runs last week. I used to never do any kind of speed workouts and am proud of myself for actually sticking to them this year!

Hm … Long run + Wine with friends/family + Lots of sleep = Perfect weekend :)

Reply

I love naked runs! I don’t often do them during training, but I like the idea of incorporating more for rest days!

Reply

Oh my gosh that view is GORGEOUS!

I run without my watch when I’m trying to take it easy or recovering. I usually run with music, but if it’s either really early or late I’ll keep it off for safety!

I really really want to start biking..Pittsburgh got a bike share program and as soon as it stops raining for an afternoon I’m trying one out! And hopefully buying my own later this summer. There’s a trail that runs from my apartment to my work along the river and I really want to start bike commuting!

Reply

90% of the time I run without tracking speed, but I always know my distance because I have a few routes around here that I always run. I usually listen to music but sometimes when my brain is really full and I need to process my thoughts, I will run without music. Great start to your marathon training! Those mile repeats look tough that you did on Monday.

Reply

I bought a new bike a couple years ago, but I have yet to take it out for a ride this summer. I really should get on that.

Reply

Beach + Family= The Perfect Weekend
True confession: I’m 40 years old and I can’t ride a bike! (shameface)

Reply

I run tech free occasionally but i prefer music bc i get tired of my huffing and puffing! and i love listening to music so…

Last weeks running was hard bc of the high temps but i felt good and very accomplished after each one.

Brownies + running

I have a cruiser bike that you back pedal to brake. i live downtown so i ride it all over!

Reply

Family + Sunshine = Perfect Weekend.

and I might want to add on : an adult beverage, a little ice cream, and visiting a quaint little town with fun unique shops….LOVE!

Reply

That view from the ski lift is beautiful! And the ice cream dessert looks way too delicious :)

My favorite run last week was my 10k race on Sunday!!!

Reply

I’m hooked on running with music. I almost never run with out it. I’m sure I’d be ok with out it, I just don’t like hearing how out of breath I sound.

My favorite run last week was my hill run. I’m going to have to push it a little harder on the miles this week though. I need to get to 5 miles so I can make a new goal.

Reply

I don’t know if I’ve ever gone on a tech-free run. I love tracking everything and reviewing the data afterwards, even if I choose not to run with music or a podcast.

For me, Beach + Family = the perfect weekend :)

Reply

I always run without music but I haven’t gone on a water free run in a long time. This is a great reminder.

My weekend was the perfect weekend: Game of golf + beach volleyball. :)

Reply

I do enjoy the naked runs – but then I always come home and nap it immediately to see how far I went.

My perfect weekend = Starbucks + a good book

Reply

We had that exact same dessert last night.
Great minds.

Reply

If I’m running with people I don’t run with music and when I was coming off of injury I didn’t run with a Garmin because I wanted to know how I felt and know all the numbers :)

Ran with my mom last week… it was a good run :D

Family + farmer’s markets = the perfect weekend.

I have a road bike and did 52k with my dad on Saturday. I love cycling! Training up for 160k in August!

Reply

I ran a naked-race last week and last month. No watch of any kind. It was a different experience for sure. I could wear no watch during training runs since I have certain routes where I know the distances, but I’ve started using my Garmin again. More because I can’t go fast right now

Reply

If the weather is really nice then I will run without music. This weekend I went stand up paddleboarding twice…once when it was 57 degrees and choppy and the next when the sun was out and everything was glorious!

Reply

I’ve gotten hooked on running with my Nike+ Sport Watch (I’ll upgrade to a Forerunner when I can), but I don’t usually mind running without music. On my long runs I’m almost always with someone, so I just chat. Lately, I’ve preferred podcasts to music anyways.

Saturday’s 9 miler was my only run so it was good. And hilly. It burned and I loved it.

BBQ + friends = the perfect weekend

I currently own two bikes and ride zero, so I’ll leave it at that.

Reply

I love technology free runs. Sometimes when my iPod loses battery in the beginning it’s almost a happy moment. All I’m left with is my breathe and thoughts. I don’t bike often but I always wish I could afford a nice road bike. I think it would be neat-o to see back country in a different way.

Family + Food = The perfect weekend.

Reply

I never to technology free runs– though I probably should and know it would be good for me. :)

My favorite run last week was a 15 mile group run with a local running store. I’ve been doing long runs regularly but this was actually the longest run I’ve EVER done! And I felt really good afterwards. :

Sunshine + being outside = perfect weekend

That’s ice cream dessert is going to be made in our house very soon! I think it would be so delicious with coffee ice cream! Chocolate + Coffee = a perfect combination!

Glad you had a great first week of training!

Reply

My Garmin’s been dead for quite a while – I lost the charger moving in September and didn’t find it until I moved again in May! I’ve recently been a music runner more often than not though, need to totally unplug sometime soon.

Favorite run last week was a beach 5K on Saturday – I haven’t had time to run for the past couple months between work and grad school, so it was nice to enjoy a fun, low-pressure race. And since it was a small, local race, my slow 29:46 earned 2nd place age group!

I have a beach cruiser that I ride around town, but that’s it. I’m not nearly coordinated enough to mountain bike!

Perfect weekend = Friends + combo of running/relaxing

Also, I have those gold Brooks and LOVE them!

Reply

Uhm, that dessert looks AMAZING. I love riding ski lifts off season. Near me there’s a ski mountain that has a Waterpark in the summer and you can ride the ski lifts. So fun!

Reply

Nice weather + rest/relaxation = perfect weekend

I love to bike… I have a road bike and a mountain bike. I’ve been dealing with a knee issue but hopefully I can get it resolved so that I can be back on my bikes soon. I’d love to get a full suspension mountain bike at some point.

Reply

I love how your family is so close and that you make time to get together often.

Most of my naked runs take place when I am running with other people. I have a hard time running by myself without music, unless I accidentally forget my iPod or the battery goes dead.

Favorite run last week was a mid-morning run on Friday that was supposed to be 3 miles but turned into 6. I am 27 weeks pregnant, so anytime running feels good I take advantage and enjoy!

My husband + hiking/camping in the mountains = the perfect weekend.

Reply

I can run without my Garmin anytime but I sure miss my music if I don’t have it during a run or race.

I have 2 beautiful road bikes that in the past I rode almost daily, but now that I have a dog we run everywhere instead. I do miss riding sometimes but there have been some tragic cycling deaths on the highways around here lately so now I’m a little nervous.

A race with my dog + a family get-together = a perfect weekend

Brooke and your dad are so darn cute.

Reply

I’ve actually run more races without technology than training runs. I don’t like to run without my phone just in case something happens when I am alone. With others, I don’t mind.

Reply

so awesome you got to spend Father’s Day with so much of your family! I’ve now added taco salads to our meal plan for the week, too :)

Reply

Mmm that Oreo ice cream looks delicious!

Reply

Favorite run was my 1/2 marathon race. First race after 3+ years of achilles problems (and turning 40) and got a PR! Beautiful views of Lake Tahoe and the fact that it was mostly downhill didn’t hurt.

Love to mountain bike and road ride. We like to road trip to Utah to ride (Moab, Park City) – the riding is so beautiful out there!

Reply

Your nephew is getting so big!! Adorable!!! :)

Reply

I love those shoes! The color is perfect! This looks like the most wonderful summer day!

Reply

That oreo dish looks AMAZING… I will be making that soon!!!

Reply

staying up late reading + sleeping in = the perfect weekend

My fave run last week: Nike Women 15k in Toronto. I ran walked and my time was better than I expected. I had great company and it was my first event since my hip injury. I proved to myself that I could do it.

I don’t run with music outside and sometimes I forget my watch. It feels good and I generally know how far I’m running so I get my miles in. I have to have music or tv on the treadmill. It’s too boring otherwise.

Reply

Hi Janae, I ordered one of your shirts and can’t wait for it! When will they be sent out? I’m guessing they won’t print until after sales close.. then a few days for shipping?

Reply

Thank you so much Janelle!!! YES… the shirt will get to you about 7 days after the sales close! I hope you love it!!!

Reply

-I have been musicless for 5 runs now. Just haven’t felt like listening. My Garmin…now that’s another story.
-I had a 4 mile run last week, that felt really effortless and wonderful.
– am run+ family time = perfect weekend
-My daughter and I bike once a week and all three of us, maybe once a month. I like it, sometimes I use it as my cross training. My 5 y.o. uses a weehoo which attaches to my bike so when she doesn’t want to peddle I’m really working :) LOL

Reply

Running + Family Time = Perfect Weekend

Great week of marathon training, Janae! That Oreo cake… YUM. And your nephew is growing up so fast!!!

Reply

I once ran a nake half marathon. It was so nice because I was so relaxed and I could enjoy the beautiful views around the island.
What makes the best weekend, know that you don’t have another weekend for nine weeks because it’s summer vacation. The life of a teacher.
I’m making that ice cream cake! Sounds so yummy and so easy!!

Reply

My favorite run was a 1/2 marathon on the Carnival Glory in the middle of the Ocean as the sun was coming up!!! I uploaded it to Garmin and it is a straight line in the middle of the blue. Very fun.

Reply

Way to go with your training! You are totally getting a sub 3 this time! :) Your little nephew is getting so big, and dinner looked amazing. Oh and I always have to have music, television show, church talk, just something while I run or I go crazy

Reply

Great start to training! I prefer running without music or a GPS. I stress too much over my pace, so I usually leave the watch at home. When I’m actually training for a race, I’ll use it, but keep it in my pocket and look at it only when I’m finished running.
My favorite run last week was technically this week – the BAA 10k in the pouring rain!
I ride a road bike. The thought of mountain biking terrifies me!

Reply

Perfect weekend = running and playing at the pool. :)

Reply

I hope your run today was a good one. Technology free runs are some of the best. Plus, you fueled right. That dinner AND dessert looks and sounds amazing. Now I’m hungry

Reply

“naked” runs are about all I do these days! it’s best for my mind :)

no plans + a day spent outside = a perfect weekend

I only have a road bike and it terrifies me a bit, but I did take it out for the first time in probably a year this past weekend!

that cakes. nommmms.

Reply

That dessert recipe is genius! YUM!!!

Reply

The beach + my family = perfect weekend
I don’t run with music, but I feel like I HAVE to have my Garmin. When I start marathon training again, I am going to try some naked miles and see how it feels.
That dessert!!!
Love to bike – LOVE my mountain bike. It is perfection to go to the mountains and explore with my bike.
Happy Monday!

Reply

I’ve started running without music, but I haven’t ran without GPS in a long time.. I just love my stats too much, even after an easy recovery run…

Reply

That cake looks amazing!! Yum!

Reply

I make a similar ice cream cake but instead of cool whip on top of ice cream, I top it with m&m’s!

Reply

I’m just dandy with embracing technology….However, in a long run there are times where music becomes an annoyance and I have to turn it off for awhile.

I’m not sure it was my FAVORITE but most memorable run of last week…I ran a 50 miler with a stomach flu….and I finished and PR’d in that distance….I’ll be riding the pride associated with that for a long time.

Running and beer.

I’m an avid road cyclist but I just don’t have much time anymore to spend on the bike now that I’m tackling 70 mile weeks on the regular….Often, I’ll take a bike ride on lunch though and that’s super nice.
