Sounds good at any time of day.

I have to warn you.  My family likes food.  And we like going out to eat when we are together.  It is fun for us and so we did a lot of that yesterday.

For lunch my mom told me to choose any restaurant I wanted for lunch.  It literally didn’t even take me 5 seconds to decide on Pluto’s.  The salad may not look delicious but the steak, broccoli, bleu cheese, sweet potatoes and balsamic vinaigrette hit the spot.

After lunch we drove up to Palo Alto to my aunt’s house and then on over to Stanford campus to see Memorial Church.  It was incredible.  All of the art that you see is mosaic and the inside made me feel like I was in Europe (or what I would imagine a church in Europe would look like since I have never been there.  PS my mom is going to Europe this fall and I am trying very hard to convince her that she should bring me and Brooke because it would be so educational for Brooke).

Hanging out with the art class looking at statues.

It actually runs in the family to love ice cream more than any other food so my aunt had a place in mind that she really wanted to take us to.  It is called the Tin Pot (in Palo Alto) and don’t the flavor names alone make you want to jump on an airplane to come and get some?!?

Photo 1

EVERYTHING is made there (the cones, toppings, ice cream etc) and it is all organic and made with local ingredients.  I had the one on the right, cinnamon snickerdoodle (actually the best ice cream I have ever had, it had little chunks of cookies in there) and roasted banana fudge ripple on the bottom (good but 1/8th as good as the cinnamon snickerdoodle).

Photo 2

Fast forward to a nap in the car…Brooke fell asleep in the car and I wanted her to get a good nap so my mom and my aunt went inside and Brooke and I hung out in the shade with the windows down and napped in the car… I have a permanent kink in my neck from doing this.

Dinner time came around and my mom and I decided that for lunch we like salads but for dinner we like burgers.  It just sounds so good at night.  So do parmesan fries.  Actually those fries sound good at any time of the day.

DSC 4788

This is the place where you choose all of your toppings.  I had coleslaw, cheese, onions, avocado and pineapple on my burger with bbq sauce.   I was not proud of my mom’s decision for toppings:  olives, carrots, pineapple and lettuce?

DSC 4794

Finished the night by watching 5 episodes of Till’ Death on Netflix.

There is something that is making me very excited for my run this morning.  I’ll show you in a few hours.

Dinner is also my biggest meal. Sometimes lunch is… just depending! That ice cream looks amazing. Hopefully if your mom won’t agree to take you you can just sneak into her suitcase with Brooke! I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to manage…

Reply

Dinner is my biggest meal by far. It’s still filled with veggies but they aren’t the basis of my meal. Ice cream is good at any time of day to me and you know it’s a good place when they have crazy flavors, even if you don’t get anything strange. Snicker doodle ice cream sounds straight up delicious and it’s officially on my list of things I need to find here.

That church is gorgeous! i have to sayI usually consume the most food by 2pm. its not necessarily in one big meal (although sometimes!) but my breakfast, midmorning snacks and lunch all fall within a couple hours of each other and then im usually so full by dinner, it’s small/ average (or sometimes just as big ha) I lived in France and Italy for a year, it was amazing, i want to go back!

Reply

I went to Europe on a 6 week backpack trip with my two friends (Turkey, Italy, Greece and England) and it is hands down the best trip I have ever been on. I went again a few years later to Paris with some friends. I love everything about traveling there!

Reply

Dinner is usually the big meal of the day for us. On weekends, though, sometimes it’s breakfast, especially on long run days, post run.

I went to Vienna for a summer semester in college. We traveled around on weekends, too. It was awesome.

Reply

That roasted banana fudge ice cream sounds so good. Banana + chocolate is my favorite combination! :)

Reply

Dinner is usually my biggest meal of the day too. Those Parmesan fries look amazing but I don’t think I could have pineapple on my burger lol. I want to try the four barrel coffee with toffee bits ice cream! It sounds like heaven. Never been to Europe but if I did I would want to go to Italy. Not many places to eat around here, I guess I’d choose Cracker Barrel, they have the best Mac n cheese.

Reply

Ohmigoodness that snickerdoodle ice cream sounds and looks delicious!!! I absolutely do want to hop on a plane and come get some. Haha.
I can’t wait to see what is making you excited for today’s run!!

My biggest meal is usually lunch….dinner is only bigger if we are going out somewhere. For my favorite restaurant, I would choose to go to a local brew pub. They have an amazing quinoa ball appetizer….and their home-made veggie burger is awesome!! Hmm….maybe I will get to go there tomorrow, since it’s my birthday…… :)

Reply

Dinner is usually biggest, except on Sundays when we do brunch. I love brunch! Huge meal, all breakfast-y type food. My favorite! Plus they usually have mimosas. :)

I went to Europe my first time for a week with my mom in high school. It was my senior trip/gift from my parents. We went all over England and Paris. Then I studied abroad for 6 months and lived in Strasbourg, France. I traveled to about 10 different countries while I was there! I miss it, and I’m lobbying for a trip with husband for our 5 year anniversary. Which will be in 4.5 years, but it costs a LOT of money!!

If someone told you that they would take you anywhere in your city for lunch, where would you go?
Probably Panera for their Fuji Apple chicken salad. Or one of the local Mexican places in Atlanta that have good margaritas! Across The Street in Atlanta has pretty phenom veggie fajitas and margaritas!

Reply

I love finding people who studied abroad in France but not in Paris – I studied in Grenoble for a semester, almost 4 years ago! We visited Strasbourg/Colmar when we were there – LOVED it, all those little German houses! Traveling over there is so easy – I visited 4 different countries, as well as about a dozen other little cities in France. I miss it!

Reply

SO COOL! I love and miss it, too! I studied there in Fall 2010- so 3 years ago now. Strasbourg has a lot of German influence and it was the coolest place to see such a mix of completely different cultures! I’m planning to take my husband there soon. Hopefully.

I’ve been all around Europe- we have lived here in Germany over 2 years, stationed here with the US Air Force. We’ve been all over with a bunch of places left to explore.

JANAE THAT ICE CREAM LOOKS MAGICAL! I possibly will be eating ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I backpacked Europe for a month four years ago. I went to Spain, Portugal, U.K, Italy, France, and Greece. Let me say there are super nice (and cheap) hostels over there.

Reply

Breakfast and lunch are my biggest meals. Although we took family naps through dinner last night, so we had a huge post-dinner dinner… aka Pie Pizzeria.

I studied in Spain for a few months, and rumor has it we’ll be visiting Sweden soon for a bit so my hub can do in-person work with one of his partners. That or the Czech Republic as a friend has offered us a place to stay when we visit.

Any restaurant? I’ll repeat Pie Pizzeria, the Pie Goddess in Enumclaw, WA, or La Feria’s in Pittsburgh (who can resist incredible Peruvian food?).

Reply

I lived in Florence, Italy for 5 weeks last summer. I ran along the Arno River and across the Ponte Vecchio every morning at sunrise. It was perfection!

Reply

Any places you would recommend not missing in Florence? My husband and I are going in October!! I’m assembling our travel plans now :)

Reply

The entire city is so unbelievable. Whatever you do, you will thoroughly enjoy! Try to climb the Duomoand make it up to the Piazza di Michelangelo for the most phenomenal view of the city. At sunset the Piazza di Michelangelo is breathtaking. Anne has a great post on Florence at http://www.fannetasticfood.com/2013/06/20/italy-highlight-florence-by-foot/

Enjoy every minute of your trip :)

Oh, and we’ve done some trips with our 1 – year old! Let me know if you’re taking travel suggestions/ need tips for travel in Europe with a LO…we’ve figured out some things the hard way, lol :).

Reply

Salted butterscotch ice cream?! Awesome!
Dinner is probably my biggest meal just because I’m not too hungry in the mornings.

Reply

What an awesome day with your mom! Doesn’t get much better than great food with family!

You should do everything possible to join your mom in Europe. I’ve only been a few times on business trips, but I loved every second. I’ve been to Germany, France, and England. I also went to a business meeting in Switzerland, which technically counts, but I didn’t have any time to sightsee. I would love to spend months backpacking across Western Europe with my hubby and can’t wait to take my girls when they’re older.

Reply

Love visiting pretty churches! And those ice cream flavors really do sound amazing. Never been to Europe but I’m dyingggg to go!

Reply

I live in Europe!! I live in England, in the North East. But I’m from Australia. Europe definitely has old churches.

Dinner is our biggest meal too, and my hubby always wants loads of meat and protein. So I’m bulking up a bit!

If I could go anywhere…. it would be Vietnam. Or Tokyo. I miss all the Asian food that Australia has!

By the way…. pineapple on burgers is Da Bomb. So is beetroot, and egg. :)

Reply

Biggest meal=dinner. And by the way…what a cliffhanger. Now I really want to know why you were excited about your workout!
You know I LOVE ice cream…I think I would have picked the coffee one.
Never been to Europe but I have been to Israel and India. I think I really need to visit you in CA! I have only been to CA once for a 3 day conference in Lancaster.
PS. Thanks for getting back to my email :)

Reply

olives and Pineapple… hmmm not too sure about that. I love both so maybe I should give it a try before I judge.
I would take them to Taytros, a small local Cajun place in my small town!

Reply

I’d like to cordially disagree–I think your mom’s burger sounds fantastic. :)

Dinner is definitely my biggest meal. I guess I was kind of raised with that mentality–dinner would be the time that the entire family was together, just enjoying good food. So dinners still tend to be the biggest and most elaborate meals for me!

Reply

I would love to go to Europe. I have a long list of places to go. I hope I’m able to get to them at some point in life.

Reply

On weekends usually breakfast/brunch but during the week supper.
I went for 4 weeks in high school on a school trip, we were mainly in France but also travelled to Germany, Switzerland and Belgium.
Usually I would pick Pho or sushi but a new wood oven pizza place just opened I want to try so I would pick there.

Reply

I love the idea of pineapple and avocado on a burger! I am going to have to try that!

Reply

Oh my goodness….. cinnamon snickerdoodle would have totally been my choice too! I love snickerdoodle anything!

Reply

We went to Paris last fall and decided that we want to do international travel every other year for vacation. This year we’re staying in the US, but next year we’re either doing a D-day “tour” or going to Japan!

Reply

Breakfast or dinner is usually my biggest meal of the day. I went to zushi asia yesterday for lunch and that might be my new lunch spot. Yum!

Reply

Our biggest meal right now is actually lunch.
We live in my home county, Germany, for the next year and a half and here, it is quite common to have a larger (warm) lunch, then (very important!) cake, cookies or pastries in the afternoon, and then a smaller dinner (mostly bread with all sorts of toppings, a cheese platter, soup, or something like that). When my parents visited, my mom was shocked that in the U.S. we are this “unhealthy” to have a larger and warm dinner at night.

You should totally come to Europe and make sure to swing by Berlin and say hi!

Reply

That church is just lovely! My biggest meal is usually dinner, but if ice cream turns out to be my biggest meal, so be it :)

Reply

Which meal of the day is usually the biggest for you? Lunch or dinner. Varies day to day depending on my schedule.

Who has been to Europe? No, but I really hope to someday.

Reply

Lunch is usually my biggest meal. I get a little anxious about having yummy food quickly and then by dinner I’m regretting it so I have a small dinner :)

I’ve been to Paris and an awesome southern city in France, England, Spain, and Switzerland. All were separate trips, and I would love to go back again soon! Especially to Paris because it’s so beautiful and because I never had a Parisian macaron while I was there (I know, facepalm).

Reply

Those fries look delicious. I know potatoes have a special place in your heart like they do in mine.

I studied abroad in Spain for six months and got to visit 5 countries and even more cities. It was amazing and an experience that I’ll never forget. You must go at some point, although since it is such an expensive trip, I’d suggest taking Brooke when she’s old enough to remember it.

Can’t wait to hear why you’re so excited!

Reply

I am upset that your mom chose those toppings as well. Your burger sounds more like it. :] And that salad actually sounds amazing.

Reply

I might have to go to Cali just to go to that ice cream place! My biggest meal varies every day. I want to go to Europe soo bad! In my citywe don’t have a lunch restaurant… so I guess we’d have to go out for pizza. Which is totally okay!

Reply

haha Your Mom’s burger sounds very…interesting. Maybe she is on to something and it is the best combination ever! ;-)

Reply

I adore Tin Pot! Last time I went there I got coffee with cacao nib toffee and it was amazing.

Reply

Dinner’s the biggest for me too. I went to Switzerland a few years ago for 10 days and it was by far the prettiest and most peaceful place I have ever been. We were there around Thanksgiving for the first snow and it was impossible to have any worries there looking at the scenery and beautiful churches and eating the delicious food. Around here I would take anyone to this little cafe that makes their own bread every day for their paninis and has the best salads and people watching around!

Reply

I would say dinner….I think about it all day long! Dinner is also always followed by dessert :).

I went to Ireland between my junior and senior years in college. It was such an amazing 2 weeks and I would love to go back sometime. I agree that your mom should take you guys because Brooke could learn so much ;-).

Reply

I looove that your day was all about food :) Dinner is always my biggest meal.

I lived in Spain for 5 months and so wish to be there again! Once you’re in Europe the travel is very cheap to nearby countries – got to go to London, Rome, Belgium (for chocolate of course!), and Paris. It would be very wise of your mom to take you and Brooke – I mean, she needs to be exposed to cultures and different languages at an early age, as well as the amazing food that’s over there! Hopefully you’ll get a chance to go soon!

Reply

I honestly think my afternoon snack is always the biggest lol I’m just so hungry in the afternoon. I wish I have been to Europe, one day :). I would probably pick some place I’ve never been and wanting to go eat at.

Reply

Oh man, all of those ice cream flavors sound incredible! I love your cinnamon snickerdoodle choice! Dinner is typically my largest meal as well. If we go out to breakfast (on the rare occasion), then breakfast is my biggest meal though because I LOVE going out for breakfast and all breakfast foods.

Omg that salad and those ice cream choices

I’ve been to Europe: Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, England, and Ireland

If I could go anywhere for lunch in Chicago – I’d go to the Girl & the Goat. The Chef won Top Chef (season 4).

I would probably choose to go to Kelsey’s for their Sonoma pop-corn shrimp salad

i lived in spain for a while as a nanny… it was actually where and when i decided to train for my first marathon!

Plutos is so good. I should go there. I go to Dublin frequently but that’s because my husband’s 10 brothers and sisters and probably 30 nieces and nephews live. I am a big luncher but that’s because heavy dinners make me gain weight. weird.

Reply

I’ve been to Europe a couple times now. My last trip there was for a month after I graduated university. It was awesome – I ended up seeing 10 or 12 countries.

Reply

Dinner is my biggest meal usually unless we do a big breakfast or brunch on the weekend (which I love love love!)

I’ve been to Europe twice now! The first time I went when I was 20 with my best friend and we hit 13 countries in 8 weeks – whirlwind! But it was sooo much fun. And then I went for 3.5 weeks this year with some university friends to visit our friend who was teaching English in France. We did Iceland (amazing and I highly recommend!!), Italy and France. It was a great trip and far more relaxing than the first time I went. I absolutely love Europe!

Any restaurant? We have so many amazing local places here in Victoria! It’s like foodie heaven! I would choose Blue Fox for breakfast right now if I didn’t have to head off for my summer course…

Reply

Avocado in my burgers (or anything) is my very favorite thing. So yummy!

That snicker doodle ice cream sounds amazing, but I have to admit I’d go for the salted butterscotch. If I liked it even half as much as I love salted caramel stuff I’d be in heaven.

My dad was air force growing up so we lived all over the place including England and Germany. My parents made sure we did a lot of traveling while we were in Europe and I loved it. I was just a kid, but a I remember a lot (though not as much as I wish). I would love to go back!

Reply

I have lots of goofy pictures of myself with those statues. My best friend works at Stanford as a counselor, so I visit often. SO beautiful.

Dinner is definitely my biggest meal of the day. It’s right after I exercise so I am usually starving. Plus, I really like dinner, so I eat a lot of it.

I’ve been to London and Valencia, Spain. It’s already been 3 years since I visited and I have ever intention of going back and backpacking through Europe. It’s a life goal of mine.

I’m going to have to have my friend take me to that ice cream place the next time I am in Palo Alto.

Reply

Those flavors look so good! And I love going to art museums to look at the architecture and stuff, it’s so pretty! I’ve never been to Europe but definitely want to make my way to Italy one day! If I went to any place around my area, it would definitely be a restaurant called “Say Cheese” which makes gourmet grilled cheeses/cheese dishes. Mmm!

Reply

Usually dinner is my biggest meal of the day depends on the occasions :) But I loved your choices of toppings on your birthday – Yum :) I am so jealous of your mom going to Europe- I would love to go sometime! Its on my bucket list for sure- I dont even care what countries.. I wanna see it all! Hopefully you can convince your mom to sneak you two along for the ride ;)

If someone was going to take me to the city for lunch, I’d be nice and have them take me to Wing Lee Bakery/Dim Sum. It is inexpensive and we’d be able to get a buttload of food for like $7 total.
Hehe, that’s nice that you got to nap in the car with Brooke (but I can imagine the post-nap neck pain!).

I love Till Death. Such a funny and great TV show.
I am still new to AZ, so there are way too many places I could pick to eat for lunch!

Wait… I’m still on the “Salted Butterscotch” flavor… OH MYGOSH!!!!!!

Reply

Roasted banana fudge ripple? I basically need that place here. now.
Dinner is usually the biggest meal of the day for me! Just how I grew up so I keep it going.
Anywhere for lunch? I’d have to go with Sushi 8…or Gus and Guido’s. It’s a Greek/Italian place that I went to for my birthday in October, and it was amazing.

Reply

Breakfast is generally my largest and favorite meal of the day.

I’ve been to England once, for a week, and have a trip to Spain planned for next spring!

European churches are awesome – they always make me feel so small!

I may just be ignorant, but I would never think to put avocado and pineapple together – was it good??

That is it. I am booking my flight to come visit right now

I love Europe, I wish I could live there. There is so much culture and history. I met my husband while on a study abroad in Germany. We got married and went back when we graduated college to tour his mission in Germany and Austria. Then we went back again to London and Scotland. I would love to explore more! But now we have one daughter and one on the way so I don’t see it happening for awhile.
I wanted to ask if you had any tips on running through morning sickness? My running has seriously gone downhill I’ve been so sick and I’m losing all my endurance!

Stanford is such a beautiful campus! When I was college searching we drove through the campus. SO gorgeous!

Apparently there’s a smokehouse in my town that I’ve really been missing out on. So next time I’m out to lunch or dinner I’m definitely stopping there for some pulled pork tacos (AND sweet potato fries with maple syrup…..yummm)

uh alll of those ice cream flavors sound unbelievable! :)
My breakfast is usually my biggest meal. I’m always the hungriest in the morning
I went to Spain for 10 days in high school we went to every major city throughout the country and stopped in London on the way home. I liked London for the one day we were there
ah there’s a place with really good cabbage tofu peanut salad :)))

Stanford has such a pretty campus.

The first time I went to Europe I was 32. I’m kind of addicted now. It got more and more challenging as our family grew in number, but for several years we went 2-3 times a year with kids (it used to be way less expensive). It’s been two years since our s last trip and I am totally jonesing. We’ve talked about living abroad but have yet to really look into making it happen.

That lunch looks delicious!

I like breakfast as the biggest meal…nothing worse than a huge dinner from which I have to recover :(

I visited Ireland for 10 days almost 2 years ago…the very best trip of my life so far :)

My “city” is actually a very small town in Mississippi with very few places to choose from besides the standard drive thru fare :p There is a place downtown though that serves an incredible grilled tilapia dish with a crawfish sauce on top. I’m up for that meal anytime :)

We went to Italy two summers ago and visited Rome, the Vatican, Florence, and Tuscany. We saw TONS of beautiful old churches! I ready to go back and hit some other villages and the coast. You would LOVE the gelato at Giolitti in Rome!

Reply

I have dreams about Giolitti! Amazing.

There is no way I would have been able to chose between those ice cream flavors! I would have had to have six scoops, at least! ;-)

PS I moved to Europe a few years back, so my longest trip is going on three years. There are some amazing places to see, races to run and foods to eat. Hope your mom has an awesome time!

Reply

I TRY to make lunch my biggest meal so I have energy for the 2nd half of the workday and I can still work some of it off during my evening run. Then I just enjoy a protein smoothie/scrambled egg wrap/ or something similar as my dinner afterward. However, this doesn’t usually end up being the case – we go out to eat way too often!

I spent a year of undergrad in Germany (small small town with cobblestone streets) and traveled around during the year. It was FABULOUS and miss it all the time.

DINNER!!! Evening is the time of the day when I finally get to relax and I just LOVE lying on my couch watching TV (currently re-watching Seventh Heaven. Don’t judge people!) and eating as much food as possible! Also, I’m mostly an evening runner, and after my runs I just feel like eating whatever is in sight!

As I mentioned in the past, I’m originally from Rome-born and raised there! I moved to NYC when I was 20, almost 7 years ago. If your mom is going to Rome in the fall, you HAVE TO LET ME KNOW! My parents own a coffee shop 10min from S. Peter Square and they have the best pastries and cappuccinos in the whole world! Oh, and I also lived in Berlin for one year and went to Paris 3 times.

It’s lunch time right now and if I could go wherever I wanted to eat, I’d go to Cipriani right by Central Park. I usually don’t go for Italian food when I eat out but Cipriani is an exception: best, authentic pasta in NYC! It’s pretty expensive though so we only go there for very special occasions…

Reply

I like to eat a big lunch (breakfast on the weekends) but my husband prefers a big dinner. He usually wins. I REALLY want some ice cream now.

there is an ice cream place very much like that in santa cruz, not sure if you’ve come across it yet. there are actually a couple of locations – the main one is downtown, called the penny ice creamery. there is also a location at the beach called the picnic basket (with sandwiches and other food, but also their ice cream).

they pasteurize their own milk, and all of their ingredients are locally sourced and organic and DELICIOUS. i have lived there for about 2 years and i’m not a huge ice cream eater, but i have theirs all the time, it’s so good.

We took a cruise in Europe two years ago – Spain, France, and Italy for our 20th Anniversary! LOVED it! Lasagna in Rome changed my life – it was different from American lasagna, little or no ricotta cheese, so it was much flatter but the flavor was incredible. We had pizza and cannoli in Venice and tried gelato at every port!

Dinner is typically my biggest…..

I got to study Christian Art & Architecture in college (nothing to do with my major, I just wanted to travel), so I took a month long course that allowed me to go to Italy (Florence, Assisi, and Rome), France (Paris and one place in the country-side I can’t remember), and England (London and Oxford). Best experience ever! I’m trying to convince my Dad to travel with my brother and me to Europe this fall too…..I’m hoping for Germany/Austria!

Today, I think I’d pick Uncle Bill’s Pancake House in Manhattan Beach for lunch….I’m craving eggs, toast, and panckaes!! :) :) :)

What a great day! That ice cream place looks great, I love places like that that make everything in-house!

DINNER is always huge for me. I always mistakenly eat to the point of misery. But so good.

I studied abroad in Germany for a semester and traveled around a lot while I was there (thank you, Bavarian Catholic 4-day weekends!). And I am going to London and Paris with my sisters in TWO WEEKS! So excited.

Anywhere in Houston for lunch, I would pick Local Foods – truffle egg salad sandwich on pretzel bun with butternut squash quinoa and kale!! So good.

I am so jealous of the ice cream.

Reply

Now I am craving fries and ice cream!! I will have to see what I can do about that!!!

In Fort Worth, I would want to go to 1. Joe T Garcia(MEXICAN!!!) or 2. Terra(Mediterranean). Since I could not choose between the two I would go to one for lunch and the other for dinner!!!

I just got back from 18 days in Italy, and you need to go! There is gelato on every block and enough flavors to try a new one every time. We may have eaten gelato 3x a day… every day. Oh, and it’s beautiful, and amazing in all sorts of historical, artistic, and culinary ways too… but the gelato is a highlight for sure!
