I have a problem when it comes to shoes.  Not Carrie Bradshaw shoes………workout shoes.

Readers have asked what shoes are my favorite and what shoes they should get.

My ADVICE:  Go to a running shoe store where the employee’s watch you run and can analyze your foot strike, stride etc.  Everybody is different and we all have different needs when it comes to shoes:)

Here is my current rotation of shoes that I am using.

IMG_3466.JPG

Some people have wanted to know more about why I use the shoes I do….so here goes, you might find this boring so just scroll down and answer my usual random questions or just leave a comment telling me how much you love me and how we are meant to be real life friends:)

First of all my lovely vibrams (read this post for more info)

IMG_1770.jpg

I don’t think I will ever completely run barefoot but I truly believe that these have helped my form so much.  I also think that it has helped my knee pain big time.

Below are my new Brooks and we took them to the shoe maker to make them drop zero (there is no difference in height from the front to the back).

IMG_3468.JPG

Racing flats aren’t even drop zero.  The people that I have talked to that use this method say that by doing this you can even get more miles out of your shoes.

My calves are sore but they are helping my form big time……no heel striking here:)

These are my Nike Shocks that I do all of my lifting in…..since that rarely happens anymore they are my Costco shoes to get me quickly from one sample to the next.

IMG_3472.JPG

My very first pair of racing flats for my first marathon. They are Saucony’s.

IMG_3471.JPG

Second pair of racing flats…..love the color, it looks like there are flames underneath me.  These beauties are Mizuno’s

IMG_3470.JPG

Mizuno Waveriders.  I LOVE these. There have been many miles together but it is almost time to retire them.  They have treated me well and I thank them for their love and quality time.

IMG_3469.JPG

Asics.  Cross-training (elliptical and stair-climber)

IMG_3467.JPG

And of course my cycling shoes. (I am too lazy to go to the car and get them, 100 feet away is really far)

If you are really into spin I definitely recommend getting these.  They help big time with power and speed.

*********BIG NEWS!!!! BILLY JUST TOLD ME THAT HE HAD TO GO DO ERRANDS TODAY AND HE DECIDED TO DO THEM BY RUNNING FROM PLACE TO PLACE…..I HAVE CREATED A MONSTER.

What is your FAVORITE brand of shoes?  (Running shoes or real shoes)

-I am LOVING my Brooks but I love Mizuno’s too.  For real shoes…..pretty much anything at Nordstrom’s.  I drool over their shoes.

What does your loved one’s need to hold an intervention for you about?

-Besides my shoe addiction….I think they may need to do one for Swedish Fish and circus animal consumption, my 4-layers of make-up problem, lack of washing my hair regularly and spending hours watching Friends, Gilmore Girls and The Bachelor.

Oh, running shoes all the way! I have several pairs of heels and boots but they don't excite me like running shoes. When I walk into a running story I go ga-ga over the shoes. What kind of girls are we?

My addictions are usually food-related. Such as soft pretzels, Trader Joe's vegan trail-mix cookies, peanut butter on my super awesome toasted bread, you get the idea.

Reply

Crazy! I just wrote a post about how I have more pairs of running shoes than all of my other shoes combined–however, I think you have me beat!

I don't necessarily have a brand I stand by, but I do like Asics and Mizunos.

Reply

I LOVE Vibrams! But I don't wear them here on base, since it's all gravel and my feet are wimps.

I think my fiance would hold a shopping intervention. I love shopping soooo much. Though, soon I will no longer be in the military, and we will be on a budget. :(

Reply

so far I only have had Nike ones…and the same model..I buy them when I see them on sale and now they dont make them anymore so after the last new pair I will need to move on to something else….

addiction: hmmmm swatch watches…nothing too crazy, LIFE IS GOOD shirts I love them!

I love Asics!

I probably need an intervention over blogging… I am having way too much fun!

Reply

I wear Brooks because I get 40% off. LOL.

I wear the Revannas, my Vibrams, and my ST6 racing flats.

Reply

I have not tried Vibrams but am interested!!!! I'm a Saucony girl-they're the only ones I haven't had any joint issues with. I used to rock shocks (pre-running days) but now ever since i've had "good running shoes" I can't wear shocks anymore!

Reply

My new running shoes are Brooks and so far I looove them. Before that I had Saucony which treated me well for a long time. I'm also a Vibrams fan and I'm looking forward to the weather being decent enough to wear them again.

That having been said, my favorite shoes these days are my croc flip flops. I only wear them at/after the pool, so if I'm wearing them, it means I had a super intense workout that day. It means I did the gym for over an hour followed by a swim, and I'm too overheated to put sneakers back on. I love my flip flops. :)

Reply

I've been thinking of trying a more minimal shoe. But not quite as minimal as VFF :)
I probably need an intervention from Sephora… fav store ever! An intervention from the internet, I spend too much time on it! Intervention from Reese's peanut butter cups, drooling just thinking about them! I'm sure there are many more things i need interventions from but those are the top of the list!

Reply

Oh, and I have a pair of Sperrys that are loved to death and are the most comfortable things on the planet. They're probably my all time favorite shoes.

Reply

Guilty confession: I used to think Nike running shoes weren't real running shoes! I always thought I had to stick with Brooks or Mizunos or something. But after being fit by my local running store and finding out that Vomeros were indeed right for me, I've been with them since. I will admit they wear out a bit faster (or at least it feel like it)…

Play WWF with me! I'm PageSpicer :)

Reply

I will only train in Mizunos. Just got a new pair of Waveriders for Christmas and they feel great!

Reply

first – i think poor billy deserves a blog of his own, or a guest appearance on yours. maybe q and a thing. might be interesting.

asics, new balance and brooks. still don't understand mutilation of a beautiful pair of brooks though? :)

Reply

Looove Brooks! Oh and I agree with that person up there… let's have a guest post from Billy! I might need an intervention on the amount of time I spend reading blogs… whoops.

Reply

Love all of your shoes! I used to have Brooks Launch and now I run in Mizuno Waveriders. I love seeing your racing flats. I don't even know what that means so obviously I have a lot to learn.

My Billy would need to have an intervention with me for blog reading! Hahaha. But seriously. And chocolate chips.

Reply

I too have a ton of workout shoes….. i go between asics and mizunos… i cant choose… then again i have some nikes too! ahh :)

Reply

for real shoes I really love some of Jeffrey Campbell's stuff. Amazing boots and heels.

My running shoes are sacuony's I got them at a running store in Rehoboth Beach DE where my family has a beach house. I got to hop on a treadmill and they watched me run. It was a great experience and I love them!

I also really love my Uggs for after sports in the winter, like now. There is nothing cozier for your feet after wearing cleats for hours on end. I know they are ugly but i don't care haha

Reply

I love Brooks Adrenalines, but not GTS 9 – those sucked. GTS 8 or 10.

I used to have a high heel addiction but as I started running more started wearing flats. Now I need intervention for my popcorn problem. Also, as of late, my just want to sleep in addiction.

Reply

I'm also a fan of Mizunos. I was in Wave Riders until they decided I pronate. Boo! Currently in Nikes but I'm due for a new pair soon … YAY!

I am currently obsessed with Nilla Wafers and need someone to pry them out of my hands. Any kind of nut that I can just grab off the counter is also a problem.

Reply

Asics have been my shoe of choice for 10 years. Nothing fits my foot like an asics.

Interventions: sleeping in my sports bra so I don't have to put it on in the morning, talking about things I learn about running or nutrition from this blog and using it as dinner conversation with my husband, and i always have to eat something before i go to bed.

Reply

LOVING your blog, Janae =) I'm just coming back to running after recovering from an injury – your blog makes me want to run miles upon miles and cook tons of yummy food afterwards! =) I am considering getting Vibrams – but there are a bunch of different kinds available for women. Which ones did you buy?

Reply

I wear Nike's, but my current pair aren't my faves, so I'm thinking of looking for something new when these are dead.

My husband needs to throw an intervention for me for everything, I get obsessive about everything.

Reply

I love shoes – my favorites are Asics!

I have a grocery shopping addiction – it gets expensive…

Reply

I have always run in asics until last month. I just bought a pair of brooks and I think I will never go back to asics! They are just so much lighter! I love those orange mizumos! SO cute!

I am also addicted to high heels. Doesn't matter who makes them I just love them!

I think Brian would hold an intervention for my swedish fish addiction too! I actually haven't had them in a few weeks! I need to hit up the store!

Reply

I love my mizuno wave riders all the way! They are so light weight and make my feet and legs happy. :)

my addiction would be all things chocolate. Can't get enough!

Reply

I love running shoes more than dressy shoes. What is wrong with me?
I don't think you have too many running shoes, if I was near as fast as you I would have that many too. :)

Reply

I run in Mizunos and race in Brooks

Reply

Mizuno's are a godsend, no joke. i have had shoe problems for YEARS and when I finally found a pair in 2008 after a pair of brooks cause severe tears in my calf muscles (debilitating me and keeping me from running my first marathon; sadness). since then, I have worn waveriders like they are a piece of gold. i don't know what I'd do w/o them.

and as funny as it sounds, my intervention comes in the summer and fall when all i want to buy is….bikinis. no joke; i probably own over 40 of them. and i wear about 3-4 of them. and it's rare too. so weird…

Reply

Ahh my missed shoe addiction.. sigh!!! Your so right about the racing flats. FLATS?? Most have a 8mm drop, that's not flat. I'm going to get the Bikilias hoping they will do the trick.

BTW THANK YOU so much, your words were music to my ears.

Reply

I luuuurve my Asics! :) I'm going to have to get spinning shoes soon, my addiction to THAT probably needs an intervention…

Reply

I'm on my 3rd pair of Mizuno Wave Riders 13s now! I <3 them. BUT I wonder if my IT band issues are related to the shoes? I see they have the 14s out now. I can't decide if my next pair will be the Mizuno WR14s or Brooks Ghost 3s… If only they weren't so dang expensive!

Somebody really needs to do a lounge pants intervention with me. I've been horrible this winter! I get off work at 3:30 and go straight to work out or run most days, so I'm home and showered and in my lounge pants by 6:00. In lounge pants with my frizzy, un-flat-ironed hair, and glasses.

I know. Hot, right?

Reply

Oh how I wish I could have as many sneaks as you! I have a pair of Asics that I had been running in but they force me to heel strike so I only wear them for lifting but they still feel funny with the toe drop. I have a pair of New Balance that I was running in until I got my Nike Air Pegasus, and I have a pair of Saucony that I got to just wear around. I couldn't pass up $9 name brand sneaks! I would love to get a pair of Vibrams to just wear around to help strengthen my feet. I go barefoot at home but I MIGHT wear these out of the house in the summer!

Reply

That's not a bad addiction! hahaha!

I love my mizunos.=)

Reply

I need an intervention for eating too much pumpkin. I'm orange!

Reply

i have been wondering about your array of shoes for awhile. its like you read my mind! now…what kind of running do you do in each? like now do you use the five fingers? do you wear the racing flats for anything other than racing? what do you wear for tempo vs. intervals?

Reply

I love my Sauconys…even though i can't pronounce them. :)

I need to have an intervention regarding magazines….Runners World, Glamour, Us Weekly, In Touch, Weight Watchers, Shape….you name it, i buy it!

Reply

i want to know how your hair always looks so fabulous if you don't wash it regularly! mine gets all stringy and gross…especially when i run and it's WET from sweat.

Reply

Thanks for the post on shoes!! I need to go into a running specialty store. I love all your different shoes, especially the bright orange ones.

Reply

I love my vibrams and my new spinning shoes (as you know) make me so very happy :)

my family/roommates should probably be holding an intervention for my strange obsessions with: owls, mascara, special k fruit and yogurt, India, and DIY projects. I'm pretty sure i've been annoyingly obsessive about any one of those recently.

p.s. I just got these things called lock laces and i'm in love with them too. they're like a sophisticated version of those curly shoe laces we all had in elementary school so you didn't have to tie your shoes all the time.

Reply

I used to work in one of those running stores! Which means my shoe stash was HUGE! I remember my locker at the boathouse was literally exploding with shoes. Back then I had 17 pair of different workout shoes…all of which did get used. I love your shoe collection!
My current running shoes are Saucony, I think. I don't even know for sure :)

Reply

I definitely have a running shoe problem. My friend told me I'm not allowed to buy another pair without calling her and getting her approval first. hee!

Reply

HA! This is funny because I was visiting my sis last weekend and she had a MOUNTAIN of shoes in the corner – all workout shoes. Seriously, I think she has about 20 pairs and it's no exaggeration.

Reply

Great shoe post!!!! =D
Didn't even know that anyone analyzed your stride so that your shoe would suit your needs!

Reply

Holy guacamole, girl that is one large addiction!!
Also, I've never heard about the no drop thing in shoes- how did you learn about it? What are the benefits?
I have a serious shoe addiction- flats are my ultimate weakness- I had 50 pairs at one point!

Reply

I love brooks and saucony, but i'm currently running/working out in nike. my husband is threatening an intervention on my diet coke drinking habit.

Reply

I am on my fifth pair in a row of Asics Gel Nimbus. I don't know if I could ever wear another… I would feel like a big fat CHEATER!!!

Reply

I LOVE my Mizuno Waver Riders. I currently own five pair of running shoes…I'm on the hunt for my sixth pair right now! :)

Reply

I heart my Aasics…. they come in pretty colors :) If there were to be an intervention for me it would be over my habit of snacking on multi grain cheerio's and rum. I know you don't drink…but if you did, you'd drink rum….with diet!! Oh and possibly my obsession with coach purses and salsa….those are bad too.

Reply

I work at a specialty running store part time. We fit people for the correct shoes — you're right, everyone should go get that done! Running in the correct shoe type can make a world of difference!

I have a bit of a running shoe addiction myself, since I get them either with a sweet discount or free. Currently, I am loving my Brooks Ravenna (a light stability shoe).

Reply

I LOVE (L.O.V.E lovelovelovelovelovelove….) Gilmore Girls!!!!
My peeps would have an intervention for the amount of time I spend on my laptop.. reading blogs, watching shows online, reading magazines… facebook… hehe.

And I have Mizunos they are lovely! They're this awesome minty green colour :)

Reply

I can't believe how good your original flats look! I love Brooks, switch in 2009 and will never go back (used to run in Asics).

Reply

I had no idea you could bring shoes to a shoemaker and have them change them out to a zero drop. Interesting…may have to look into that. I'm excited for the New Balance Minimus, but even those have a 4mm heel raise…BUT, they have a vibram sole.

I used to love my Mizuno WaveRiders, but they are starting to feel heavy and clunky. Lately it's been my Nike Free's that are my go to shoe, but it's not a real love affair. I'm still looking for "the one" so I'm sampling the field a bit.

Reply

wow!! do you realise you have more workout shoes than there are days in the week?
i always wear asics, always have and im a creature of comfort i guess
http://healthybalancingact.blogspot.com/

Reply

Ha! I couldn't think of what I would need an intervention for so I asked me husband. He tells me I have a couch potato addiction (looks like my blog title is appropriate…) and an addiction to getting tickled. Aren't boys cute?

Reply

I am a devoted, 100% loyal Brooks running shoe wearer and purchaser! Brooks is my sponsor, but before they sponsored me, I loved them exclusively for many previous years. I have never worn the Vibrams, but I only run in neutral, very light trainers and racing flats. My fave's, listed from trainers down to racing flats, in order of favorite to most favorite: Ghost, Glycerin, Launch, ST5, T6-7, Green Silence. How much do I love my running shoes? THey get first dibs on my shoe rack before even my favorite heels and boots! I'm so happy you have a pair of Brooks on your list :)

Currently, I could probably use an almond butter intervention. I am eating it in my oatmeal, on my fruit and veggies and in protein smoothies. I haven't worked it onto my dinner menu yet though. Also, the pears from our local Fred Meyers have been sooo delicious for the past month, I eat at least one every single day. The hard part is waiting for them to ripen.

Almost TGIF!

Happy running this weekend!

Reply

its not an addiction…it's a necessity to have a rotation…

i've been a nike girl for years but am contemplating switching teams…

and yes we MUST do a race together or at least show up to same start line and then meet up for lunch after – by the time i finish you will have been able to drive home, take a shower and meet back up to see come across the finish line… :) party at my house after may marathon! but you know theres a zillion others – how bout dirty dash???

Reply

Why Oh Why do Vibrams have to be so ugly. I need a pretzel intervention. I eat way too many. Take them away and I get pretty grouchy.

Reply

I'm actually going to get some new Brooks tomorrow! I have never tried them before, but they come highly recommended from my sister. Can't wait to take them on their first run!

Reply

Oh and I also need a serious intervention about the Bachelor…well any reality TV really and bagels and candy…

Reply

I just got the mizunos and love them too. I also have the saucony kinvaras and love those. Do you know anything about the kinvaras and if so would you say i could run a marathon in them?? Do your racing flats make a huge difference in your marathon running? Also, the vibrams…how often do you use them.? Okay, enough picking your brilliant brain. Guess what?! I tried my very first spin class tonight …LOVED IT!!!! Thank you for inspiring me. But my woman parts hurt…is this normal. ouch.

Reply

I love my Mizuno waves, they are amazing <3
You definitley have a sexy shoe collection though.

I probably need a peanut butter, Gossip Girl, wash my hair, and baking intervention!

Reply

Nordstrom shoes – ahh, yes, they have the best shoe departments! The Nordstroms in San Francisco Shopping Center – shoe departments on 3 different floors! It is as close to heaven as one can come!

I am so intrigued by the Vibrams. Are they comfy? Hard to get used to? I've gone through 3 Nike Pegasus shoes. I love my local running shoe store – you don't pick the shoe…the shoe picks you!

My first time visiting your blog – I really love it!

Reply

Oh, well….I think you know my brand! Adidas- unless some other brand can offer better than 50% off (wink wink)

So you have a problem, huh? Billy looks very dejected today.

I am dying of curiosity- what did it cost you to drop the shoes? What kind of shoe place do you go for that?

I'll never go barefoot- just not going to work since I overpronate. I can't believe you wore racing flats for a marathon. SO brave- or flawless!

I'll be wearing performance trainers if all goes well.

Posted about it today!

Reply

Hey thanks for dropping by today. I loved your comment. You always make my day too! =D

Reply

Running shoes all the way! I don't even own heels! Although I do love nice flat boots. I find Nike trainers really comfy- I have tried other brands but they were not the right shape for my feet and I ended up with blisters. So Nikes all the way. Although I read in "Born to run" that actually runners have less injuries the longer they run in their shoes, as the lower amount of padding forces your feet to land gently. Which is why barefoot (or your vibrams) felt the best?

Reply

I already told you how much I love you, and how we are meant to be real life friends today, so moving on… ;-)

Fav shoes? Don't make me choose. All shoes are my favorite. That is like asking me to pick a favorite child. And I have no children…

Intervention subject? Shoes. My sister's friends were trying to get me to go out, and I said I didn't want to. My better half, unbeknownst to me told them to tell me we were going shoe shopping. They did, I agreed. 30 minutes later we were at a bar, and I cried. 'Nuff said.

Reply

Asics all the way. I used to run in New Balances but I was riddled with injuries at only the 10K distance. Then recently I switched to Nikes (Pegasus) and picked up IT band issues and shin splints. So, with my new orthotics I eventually settled on more Asics (Stratus I think as they're neutral) having previously worn the Nimbus, Cumulus and Kayanos.

Intervention? Probably cocoa powder. I can go through a tub of the stuff in two days.

Thank you so much for replying to my e-mail ~ I will try to bear in mind everything you said and hopefully come to a place where I can be as content and inspiring as you are in the future :)

Reply

Aww poor Billy! Haha! You look so cute with you vibrams! :) And thanks for this post- v v helpful!!

I LOVE Asics! And you too of course, although you already know that! ;)

Intervention? Chocolate and baking, duh! :P

Reply

I love my Mizunos too! but my very first pair of running shoes were New Balance and I loved them so much I bought 3 pairs of the same shoes! Unfortunately I have had to retire all of them now!

I may or may not need an intervention regarding cookie dough. And reality TV. (watched the Bachelor and Biggest Loser last night and didn't bat an eyelash!)

ps- Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting the other day! :-)

I'm totally addicted to Lululemon clothes for working out. My collection is huge and I just want more! I'm probably also addicted to purses…and shopping…eeks! I definitely need an intervention. haha.
I love looking at your running shoes though – very fun!

Can you show us a picture of your Brooks after they did the drop zero? I'm interested in seeing what they look like, this is the first I've heard of doing that.
I love adidas adios!
That's awesome that Billy is running his errands, very cool!

Reply

Love that Billy is running. Healthy and environmentally awesome. I bet you're so proud. :)

Do your feet ever fall asleep on the elliptical? Is there a specific shoe that would help with that?

Reply

My recent running shoes have been New Balance and Asics. After a gait analysis at Road Runner Sports, I bought a pair of Saucony which I like. The (free!) gait analysis also confirmed that I had been buying the right kind of shoe all along (Stability) – hooray!

I hang on to a couple pairs of my old running shoes to wear to the gym for spinning or bootcamp; my old trail running shoe is still good for hiking. I think I have 4 pairs of old shoes right now, which is too many – I need to find one of those places that accepts old shoes ( like soles4souls- http://www.soles4souls.org/get_involved/individual.html )

Real shoes? Cole Haan for heels if I had the $$, otherwise Nine West, Bandolino, whatever I can find on sale.

Intervention: Too much lululemon. Haven't added to my collection in almost 2 months though, hooray :-p And too much wasted time on the internet.

I'd love to see a post on spinning shoes if you are able to. I spin once a week, so I'm not sure if it's worth buying them or not. I don't know where to get them, what they should cost, etc. I know it would help use more of my leg muscles though!

Reply

I love your collection! I just got rid of all my running shoes last weekend and am now left with my monkey feet, my Evo's, my cycling shoes, and my Newton's. Even still, my husband thinks I have a shoe problem.
Real shoes? My husband bought my a cute pair of Born high heels and they have spoiled me. I don't want to wear another pair ever. They are so comfortable.

Reply

I swear by my Saucony Rides… I have super low arches, and so I cannot use anything that pushes up on the bottom of my feet too high (but a completely flat shoe is awful, too!). I also have an addiction to cute boots…I maybe have 6 pairs of nice riding boots/cowboy boots…and that doesn't even count those stupid Uggs I throw on to go to the supermarket!

…oh, and I'm addicted to peanut butter. 1 jar a week.

Reply

How tight are your vibrams? I got a pair for christmas… and I cant tell if 'snug' is 'TOO snug' fitting… how tight are they on your heel when you run?

Reply

Brooks and only Brooks for me! I have horrible feet (overpronate + bunyans – gross! Thank you, Mom) and it took me forever to find shoes that work (went to the shoe store to get fitted…3 pairs later I was still sore w/ blisters so I had to do my own research). I will never go back!

I'm slightly addicted to reading blogs…and workout magainzes…an intervention may be in my future from my hubby. :) Oh yeah, and coffee (Dunkin donuts!!)

My superstar running friend introduced me to Newtons and I am a total convert. They totally helped improve my footstrike.
Non-athletic: My life's most vain ambition was to own a pair of Louboutains. Last year DH made that dream come true.

Reply

I used to be a total snob about running in Brooks, and turned my nose up at those Asics people, but now I run in Asics. I should be ashamed of myself.

Reply

My favorite shoes for running are Nike's. Puma's for recreational wear.

I need to have a candy intervention as well I think. Or maybe we should just hang out and eat candy!

I discovered your blog not so long ago, and I’ve been clicking on random “you may also like – ” posts, until I saw this one!
I noticed that you don’t use every hole to lace your shoes. Is there a specific reason why you do it like that?

Reply

Hey!!! It is so you have more space for your toes to spread out when your foot lands but it is nice and snug so your foot doesn’t slide out! My old coach used to have us do it! Hope you are having an amazing weekend and thanks for your comment!

Reply

So I’m having this problem lately where I read your blog post of the day, then go to the upper left hand side and click on an old blog post. Repeat. For like an hour. So creep but seriously….. Friends, Gilmore girls, and the bachelor we REALLY ARE supposed to be real life friends ;) and if you ever come to Tampa I demand we hang out. Ill challenge you to a fro-yo topping contest and then we will go buy new running shoes. And THEN you can file your restraint order :)
