Tuesday Tangents!

On Marathon Monday 2022, we ran Boston together, and on Marathon Monday 2024, we ran 11 miles @ 8:18 average together and stopped for water at a Chevron… It was basically just as exciting.

Beck and I watched the marathon from the couch.  I was in heaven, watching the leaders and tracking all of my friends on my phone simultaneously.

For dinner I made my kid’s favorite-> chicken roll-ups.

Now let’s get talking about some other things:

*Emma Bates’s face looked so relaxed as she was leading.

*I was so impressed by Lemma leading and running alone for most of the race.  I’m telling you, the adidas speed shoes are amazing.  I think Lemma agrees with me.

*The female winner, Hellen Obiri, has a larger arm swing than the other athletes, which made me feel better because I was told just last week that I needed to chill out with my arm swing.

*Beck told me he would grab a snack to eat in the car as we were taking the kids to school… Did he think the kid’s school was 2 hours away?!

*My allergies have started to kick in.  PLEASE SEND ME ALLERGY MEDICATION RECOMMENDATIONS.  I want to feel better, but I don’t want to be a zombie from allergy medication.

*These are my friend’s Alphafly 3s that she wore for Boston.  I am so intrigued.  I want to try them, but I wasn’t a big fan of the 2s, and I’m wondering if anyone has tried both and if the 3s are much different.

*Utahns, if you have the frozen Ruby Snap cookies that you bake at home at your grocery store, please purchase them. I needed these after a looooooong day.

*One of my favorite IG accounts shared this wisdom with me, and now I need to get this bread:

*Utah is getting a hockey team, which I am pleased about.

*Brooke found where we stayed in Sevilla, Spain, on Google Earth, making us want to pack our bags and return.  She didn’t use the address to find it; she just remembered the different buildings and streets we took to get to it from the Plaza.

I ran yesterday and it was HOT! I anticipated this by also signing up for Eugene after signing up for Boston last fall! Don’t want all that training to go to waste because of a hot day! Crowds were amazing and it’s still my very favorite course. 💙💛

Congratulations Danielle and good call on signing up for Eugene (GOOD LUCK)! You just never know what Boston will throw at ya… so glad you got to be there! Let me know how Eugene goes!

I ran yesterday and was having a beautiful day (aiming for a PR as A goals and my first Boston-sub 3 as B goal)… both were in the cards until they weren’t. I felt strong through the hills and then at mile 21 started dry heaving…. I had to stop 3 times blehhhhh. I ran 3:04, which I’m proud of with the stops but man, apparently the heat got me more than I thought it would. I’m from Texas so run constantly in much hotter, and more humid conditions – but in retrospect I don’t think I hydrated enough early on. I carry a bottle, and probably should have finished it by the half, but didn’t until about 16. Anyway, it was a gorgeous marathon Monday and I so grateful to get to run but it was a journey!
I did pass Meb at mile 23 or 24, which was very cool – and based on his insta post, he had a similar day!
This course never ceases to challenge me – and I’ve officially got unfinished business out there!

Baili. I am so so sorry. You did absolutely amazing considering what you went through those last 5 miles. I feel the pain so much. The marathon can be so cruel to us. It sounded like a really hot day! And to pass Meb, that must have been so cool to see him. I too have unfinished business, meet me there next year?! Have a beautiful recovery week!

Let’s do it! :)

I also live in Utah and my allergies are nuts! I take Xyzal, which isn’t perfect but is the best OTC allergy med I’ve used. I’ve tried them all. It doesn’t make me drowsy either which is a must. I’ve been considering trying the allergy shot, have you looked into that? Last year my allergies were so bad I stayed inside as much as possible (which is SO SAD!!) to try to avoid the flare ups. 🙄 I don’t want to relive last spring/summer/fall so I’m looking to try anything. You’re the best!🩷

Reply

NUTS. I swear they are kicking in earlier than normal too. I have, the shots have saved my mom. Maybe you and I should do them together… we have to figure this out and you can’t stay inside. Keep me updated and I hope you have a great day, Bekah!

If you get a lot of nasal allergy symptoms, try nasal sprays instead of pills. It helps alleviate the full body fatigue from taking a pill.

My favorite is Astepro or Astelin (same drug available under different names). I also use a nasal rinse with saline and budesonide during peak allergy times.

Reply

That is such a good tip, I will absolutely try nasal sprays first. Thanks Jennifer and good luck to you this allergy season!

Try Xyztal for your allergies! That’s the name brand but I use the Target generic version and it works for me. It works much better than Zyrtec and Claritin do for me.

Just took a screenshot. THANK YOU THANK YOU Maureen!

Ooh I used claritin and rupall. Non drowsy and I find mixing the allergy meds ie switching it up works better for me. Reactin too.

Best allergy meds – Kroger brand, Non-drowsy Allergy Relief. No brain fog or sleepiness and they work all day. I take one every morning in the spring.

No marathons for me, but I ran outside this morning and it was lovely. Hopefully running on the roads instead of the indoor track will help my shin splits go away.

Reply

THANK YOU Mindy. Bless your heart. I will be purchasing. I have a feeling that it will help your shin splints, try to get on some dirt or grass too! Keep me updated and have a beautiful day.

Hi Janae! Looks like you had a great weekend! I ran Boston yesterday and am already thinking about next year. Have you had a Monday flight home before? Considering that in the future and trying to wrap my head around logistics. Do you remember if you were able to get late checkout/shower after? Super random but just looking for someone with experience in this!

Reply

CONGRATS KATIE! You are incredible. Let’s all meet up next time. Yep, I’ve always flown home the day of… nobody will ever give me a late checkout but I have taken some towels into the hotel lobby restroom and cleaned up there ha. It’s always worked for us but I will say, my goal is next time to at least stay and celebrate all day on Monday after the race because it does make it feel a little rushed. It’s easily doable though. I hope you had a great race and weekend!

You just have to try the allergy stuff. I like zytec. My husband uses claritin, daughter xyzal. And my son has an Rx. None are drowsy. None change our personalities (that was a fun few months when my son was little. His allergy meds made him mean his current one is great) we all take them at night since that’s when it tends to hit us worse. Also- just got the a lphaflys. Never had the old version but LOVED the old version of the Vaporflys and really am not loving the new version so decided to change it up. Will let you know what I think after sunday!

I deal with bad allergies and asthma too! My doctor recently put me on Zyrtec and Singulair which are both working wonders.

Watching the marathon was so fun yesterday! They inspire me. Especially how strong the women’s field is! That huge pack all had a chance! Seeing Sara Hall and Des Linden compete so well as masters, absolutely incredible.

Reply

THANK YOU for sharing what you are using, I have to try. Right!?! I have to brag about my friend, she took 5th for the master’s! Seeing these strong women motivate me so much. Hope your day is a wonderful one, Mariah!

The key with allergy meds (that my Dr told me years ago) was 1. take it all year long, so when when spring/fall come it won’t be as bad and 2. take it before you go to bed (it will still be working when you get up for the day, but you shouldn’t get drowsy during the day hours). This has 100% helped me. (PS i take it only about 3x a week, not everyday).

Reply

I have never even thought about taking them before I go to bed… I always did in the morning! And all year long, that is brilliant. THANK YOU for the help, I will be incorporating both tips. Have a beautiful day, Judi!

I experienced so much jealously watching Boston! I’m hoping for Boston 2026, but oh so tempted to run for charity in 2025 knowing I will qualify some day but really want to experience the atmosphere and I’m so impatient!

Exciting Utah is getting a hockey team! When North Carolina got a hockey team in 1997, my parents pulled me out of school and drove 3 hours to watch the first game! Now, I live 30 minutes away and we’ve been to 6 games this year! Please take the kids to the first game – they’ll remember it forever!

Happy Tuesday!

I think we all need to meet there in 2026! Okay, what a fun memory you have of your parents checking you out. I love that you guys go so often. Oh we will! Thanks friend, you too!

It’s a commitment, but I recommend allergy testing and then shots for your best chance at long-term relief. I’ve been getting treatment for a little over 1.5 years and my symptoms are significantly better now. Some days I still need my nasal sprays, but it’s just a couple days at a time instead of weeks. My doctor prescribed Nasacort in the morning and the azelastine/Flonase combo in the evening.

Reply

This is what I’m thinking I need to commit to also… My mom has done them and it truly changed her life. I am so happy to hear what it has done for you. I hope you have a beautiful day, Cynthia!

Those cookies look great!
And you are welcome to the hockey team! I know I should be more loyal to Arizona Coyotes as I’m in Scottsdale, but I’m not a huge fan and they are bidding on a parcel of land that’s near my house and is going to build a controversial “entertainment district” in a place where there’s already a huge amount of shopping and entertainment. I belong to a cheap big-box gym that I don’t go to THAT frequently but it’s going to double the commute time to it probably. So… we shall see what happens with that auction in June! Utah is clearly more excited about hockey than Arizona is!

Reply

Ohhhhhhh this is fun to hear the other side of things! Every Utahn I come across talks about the hockey team situation so I think we are… maybe it’s because we are a winter state and you guys aren’t ha?! I REALLY hope that district isn’t built. Keep me updated and I hope you have a beautiful day, Erin!

Reply

I think that the Alpha Fly 3’s are a big improvement over the 2’s!

This is SO good to hear. I must try. Thanks Margaret, have a fabulous day!

Just here today for the allergy med recommendations 🤣🤣🤣. Seriously this week was brutal, and it always turns to a sinus infection for me. Thinking I need the testing and shots too but also saved some of the recommendations of others to try!

I have problems with allergy medicines making me drowsy. I have had the best look with Alavert. I also take it at night, and it makes me so much less groggy that other medications. It is the same medication, Loratadine, as Claritin and Xyzal, but it works so much better for me because I am so much less drowsy. It has lots of reviews:

Clearly I didn’t proofread because I said groggy and drowsy way too many times.

Reply

Bless your heart. Added bonus that you can get it on Amazon… just ordered and it should be here soon. THANK YOU for the help and I appreciate the amount of times you said groggy and drowsy because that’s how I know YOU KNOW how bad some medications can be. Thanks Whitney, have a beautiful day!

Janae, if you can swing it, PLEASE drive to the Ruby Snap store this month and try their cookie of the month: carrot coconut curry. It is UNREAL. In fact, they’ll give you free samples at the store so go try them all! I love Ruby Snap (and it’s only about four minutes off the freeway).

Carrot coconut curry. I have never heard of that flavor combo for a cookie but I am up to a challenge. I’ll do it. THANK YOU and have a great day!

Hi Janae, I had the worst allergies. I did allergy shots for 2 years. Worked great for about 10 years. The pollen is killing my eyes this week. My allergies now stay under control by using Boiron Sinus Calm tablets or the Allergy calm. They do not make you spaced out or tired at all. They melt under your tongue. They can be found at most pharmacies or I order them on Amazon. Hopefully you find something that helps! Have a nice day.

The pollen is so so bad this week. I am so sorry you are struggling again this year. THANK YOU for the help, I will be trying. Stay in touch!

i watched and watched and watched…live, I PVRd it and watched it twice…this morning rewatching the London Marathon, Mo Farah’s final marathon…..loved that Obiri was rocking the ON Cloud Echos…
allergies have hit me badly yesterday and today…doing yard work didn’t help…I just take everything, oddly enough, a bottle Coke seems to work best…and eye drops…my eyes always itch like crazy
have changed up my workouts, running every second day, my older body needs to cross train, more strength training and more time on the bike…seems to be working okay, it’s just odd having my long run on a different day every week

Reply

I was excited to see her in ON too. Interesting about the Coke helping… I guess I’ll go grab one ha. Hope you have a wonderful day, Warren!

This is a long shot, but I have another allergy question for runners. In spring and fall only if I run more speed with heavier breathing/if doing long distance races (half and fulls), within an hour of finishing (always fine during) I’m constantly sneezing, eyes running, nose running, and full blown congestion for the next day or two. It is miserable. Any ideas? Other than a week or two during spring and fall (like this week), I’m allergy free/no symptoms. Only happens in season changes aka when major races are. Haha Anyone else ever have something similar? Have asked several doctors and they haven’t heard of it.

Reply

I’ve seriously have tried everything…even allergy shots. at one point I would just head to see my MD everyspring, and he would just give me free suppplies of eye drops, inhalers and whatever else he had…and then I just said, screw it, I know I’m going to suffer, I’ll suffer…some days are better than others….I think my younger sister has the ultmate answer, she moved to Mesa, Arizona…..she’s asthmatic even, problem solved

Reply

Enjoy a Tbsp of local unpasteurized honey everyday. This gives your body a low dose of the allergen everyday so it doesn’t freak out in the spring.
