Our living room before and after + life (of course).

(Top, shorts, hat)

In my 10 miles yesterday, I experienced hail (that made the street so slick that we had to walk on the downhills), beautiful spring views, dramatic winter views, and feelings of being too cold and warm.  It was quite an eventful run.

My favorite running socks were all dirty, so I went with some that were too small. Is there a bigger runner’s pet peeve than when your socks SLIDE DOWN MID RUN!?

This kept him entertained for 30 minutes.

More spring cleaning… I’m on a mission.

His favorite time of day is when Andrew comes home.

This whole remodel thing started with JUST wanting lighter floors to hide all of the dog hair, spills, and dirt on our floors, haha.  Famous last words—> “Let’s just stain our floors, Andrew!  Think of how fun that will be.”

I’m Sorry, Andrew, but at least it fits us exactly, and we will never change a thing about it again!

We initially started with a remodeling company… I would write a book if I could about everything that happened, but I would worry about getting sued, ha.  It. was. a. lot.

I went to my sister’s house and vented, and she told me she would take over. I am so thankful she did it because it is so much more creative, it ended up costing a fraction of what was originally planned, and it fits our style perfectly.  She is truly a genius with design and making it exactly our style.

Here is what it looked like when we saw the house first online:

Here is what it looked like when we moved in in 2018 and then for the next 5ish years.

My sis started by creating a box in the middle of the room and using concrete pieces to give it a heavy feel. We had large pieces of furniture that needed to all be tied together.

She wanted to include subtle horizontal lines to tie in with our furniture and because they create a calm feeling in design.

She then designed the dimensions of the built-ins and had them made by a contractor we liked.

We splurged on the frame TV because we wanted a TV in this room but didn’t want that to be the focal point, and so now it looks like we constantly have new art on the wall.

IMG 6115

She is the queen of focal points and draws a person into a room by the design.  She makes you want to sit in a room and stare at her creations while feeling calmer than you have in your entire life.

I want to sit on my couch and stare at this wall all day.  It feels peaceful and dramatic all at once:).

IMG 6421

I did style the objects on the shelves, which took me way longer than I care to admit, haha. She was proud of me.

PS Can you believe our home is 55 years old?!

IMG 6429

I also made a short video clip because pictures never do it justice.

You can see what my sister did with our room (the before and after is so good)!  We are just waiting on some lights to go over the table, and then we will be officially done!

Janae, I’m obsessed! I never would have thought of the “box” trick, because I’d be inclined to think it takes away space but it looks amazing. Your sister is phenomenal! What did you do with your other furniture? I’m looking for tricks on how to have plenty of storage but make it “chic” lol. I’m also obsessed with your huge picture window and the adjacent bench.

Our home is older. We actually bought an apartment building when we returned to VT– it’s an old home that was converted to five apartments. We live in one, but ours is more of a townhouse with its own entrance and patio. It’s just starting to feel really small with the kids, but I know when it’s summer we keep the French doors open to the patio all the time and that makes things feel better :)

Hello Courtney! We ended up selling it all on classifieds for Utah! Those windows and the bend are what made us want the house. I need more details on your apartment building…this is amazing. Do you rent out the other units? And French doors sound dreamy. Have a beautiful day and thank you.

EEeeeeee! Love the living room! Your sister is so talented!
Our house is nearly 100 years old as is most of our neighborhood with its old horse posts and stretch of old trolley tracks. At least all of us neighbors can commiserate about our house problems with each other. I actually like to call our tricky house issues as “charm.” hahahaha Plaster wall cracks ooze charm.
Bachelor finally was so positive! The element of friendship and maturity made this the best season. I think the bar was set too high!
Your plane snacks comment yesterday cracked me up.

Thank you, Molly! Almost 100 years old, I love that. Seriously, the details of older homes and neighborhoods are magical to me, and the large trees that come in places like that make me so happy. OOZE charm, haha. Right?! THEM IN THE CAR TOGETHER. It was everything, I had so many goosebumps. So excited for the next round of Golden Bachelorette too. Hahaha it is 100% truth. Have the best day!

The built ins are beautiful!! I love the color of them. Would you mind sharing where the table came from in the living room? I like the leather look, especially with having toddlers in the house!

Your house looks beautiful! I need your sister to come help when we finally demo the kitchen and rebuild that whole area.
Our house was built in 1951! We’ve done lots over the years, but we want to open up the kitchen and recreate that entire space. Then refinish all of the floors so they’re the same.
I am so with you on socks slipping during the run. I once took off my socks and threw them away mid run because they kept sliding down, ha. I also do not like when drivers seem to be completely oblivious to people out running or biking. It sometimes feels dangerous to be running in the morning when people are leaving for work/school. Speaking of which, I should get moving so I can avoid the chaos of the elementary school drop off.
Good job on continuing with sprin cleaning. That’s my plan for the day as well.
Have a happy Wednesday

Ohhhhh when are you thinking about demoing the kitchen?! That is exciting! Bahaha I feel like I would totally do that too. Yep, that also drives me crazy. I think you are the one that inspired me to do my spring cleaning. Have the best day, Wendy!

Wow your sister is talented! I wouldn’t leave that room.

We have a little condo which we love. We haven’t needed much renos but hubby did replace the flooring. Maybe some day we will have a log cabin in a small mountain town ha.

My running pet peeve..dogs on those invisible retractable leashes lol I have almost gone down more than once ha.

Have a great day Janae!

I’m excited to read on my couch this afternoon:). Having a space you love is everything and replacing flooring is quite a project. Oh I would love to have a log cabin.. what a dream. OH MY GOODNESS, those leases are dangerous! We need them outlawed. Thank you and you too, Kristine!

It looks amazing and wonderful! Have you shared where those chairs are from, they look stylish yet comfortable! I’ll be curious if the dark built in shows dust (kinda like dark floors), keep us posted. your sister should have her own design show!

Hello Randi! Thank you so much, we are excited! We got them here: https://gatehousestyle.com/. Send them the picture and they can get you the exact ones! We were pretty happy about their price point compared to similar chairs. That is such a good point, I didn’t even think of that… I’ll make my kids dust them daily ha. I agree, she would do amazing. Have a beautiful day!

It looks great – your sister does top notch work! I have contractor horror stories, too. Our house was built in 1987. We’re finally happy with outside and now need to tackle the inside. Trying to figure out how much of it we will do ourselves because we’re always happier with the end result. I really love our house – the kitchen and master bedroom suite are my favorites.

Horror stories… wish we could all get together and tell them. I can’t tell you how many tears I cried. Those are the most important parts, it feels so good to have spaces you love. Good luck with the inside, keep me updated with the process. Have a beautiful day in Hawaii, Kathy!

The worst. I had this happen during a race one time and it made me so so mad. Hope it doesn’t happen to either of us from here on out:). Have a beautiful day, Kathleen!

I love everything about it! Long time follower, but a rare commenter 😊 Where did you get your chairs from? They look fantastic!

Melissa! Thank you so much and we’ve been friends for so long! They are from Gatehouse! https://gatehousestyle.com/. You can send them the picture and they will know which ones. Andrew and I were actually pretty shocked by their prices too because similar ones were like triple the price. I hope you have the most beautiful day!

How pretty! My house was built sometime between 1895-1898. I’m still trying to find the real date! My house became a boarding house sometime before 1940. It was four apartments when I bought it two years ago. I still have a lot of projects to go!

Ahhhh, I LOVE it, what a beautiful space! Your sister never ceases to amaze me. And I’m VERY impressed with your styling the shelves, that is not my strong suit! Our house is the same age as me, so I consider it a “very young” almost 50! We did a big remodel to the kitchen and main living area in 2010/2011 and my heart still flutters every day when I walk downstairs and see it. So worth all the headaches and scrimping/saving!

Love the new look!! Your sister has such an eye for design. She could honestly start an online business to consult on design and I would be her first client. My house was built in the 1920s so it’s over a hundred years old! Which would be cool if some of the original design work was there but sadly no more. At least electricity and plumbing were put in during the renovations by previous owners even if they took out cool elements lol

What a GORGEOUS living room! Your sister really is talented beyond compare!

So–the Bachelor–I thought the finale was actually great. I was rooting for Kelsey! And I really love how she and Daisy showed up together. And how proactive Daisy was before leaving the hotel.

I *will* say that I was rooting for Maria to be the next Bachelorette. She’s sort of everything I wish about 90% of the other bachelor ladies would be. But it will be interesting to see how Jenn is as the bachelorette!

Can you share more about the TV cord situation? Also did I miss the kitchen reveal or is that coming next?!

Your sister is a genius! You are so lucky, it looks AMAZING.

Love it! It’s beautiful! And so clutter free. I don’t really have an area I love. Our house is a mess of clutter everywhere! Do you put out picture frames of family? Or just decorative items?

Wow!!! It looks SO beautiful!!! I love what your sister comes up with. She really could have a tv show!
