Here I am, doing what I said I wouldn’t do.

(Shirt, leggings, gloves, beanie, shoes)

I’m REALLY trying to look at the bright side of things with winter being here.

I think training for Boston last winter has left me a bit nervous about marathon training again this winter.

Remember how I vowed never to train for a marathon again during the winter?  Here I am, doing what I said I wouldn’t!

But I feel in my gut that Seville will be my favorite marathon so all of the frozen toes and bright red cheeks will be worth it.

At least it is gorgeous out during the winter.

And running through a few inches a day of fresh snow will make my calves so strong… At least, it better because it feels so much harder.

10.6 miles @ 8:35 pace, 62 miles for the week, +75 minute Peloton ride day, and a rest day on Sunday.

While I love the Novablast 3s, they are not a good shoe for running in the snow.  A few of us had them on and said they felt like we wore skis.  It’s time to start wearing waterproof trail shoes for these mornings of running on fresh snow.

Is anyone else having difficulty believing how fast Brooke has grown up?!  Who was here when she was born?

IMG 9324

After Brooke’s indoor soccer game, she requested chic-fil-a.  These two shared a shake, and I don’t know how they survived the brain freezes they experienced.  Why drink it slowly and enjoy it when you must ensure you get your fair share of the shake so that your sibling can’t get more than you?!

They went sledding while I got some work done.

And we had a date too!

And a lazy Sunday.

And time with cousins!

We finished up the weekend by watching, ‘Family Switch’ on Netflix.

Snow runners—> What do you do to avoid slipping?

Ever had a fall on the ice?

-Ever since my dad’s fall, I am terrified and really slow down whenever things look iffy.

Random brain freeze question, but do you experience them?

-SO easily, but my St. George brother has never had one.

I need to hear a running related thing that you promised yourself you would never do again but then you did.

As 1 of 6 kids, I definitely remember sharing milkshakes with my siblings and getting brain freezes as a result. We would give each other 3 second “sips,” so of course you tried to get in all you could in those three seconds, lol. Immediately after my first half marathon, I swore I’d never do another one…and then I signed up for one within the next couple of days. :) Happy Monday, Janae! Have a great week!

3 second sips hahahah. That made me smile! I hope my kids remember doing this too. It’s so funny to me how we break these promises we make to ourselves about running… we are hooked! Have a beautiful day, Emily!

Your hair looks so cute in braids :) Here since the beginning (though never really used to comment) and CANNOT get over how grown up Brooke is!!! Glad it was a good weekend–lazy Sundays are the best. Have a wonderful start to the week!

Courtney! We’ve been friends for so long! I feel so lucky. I’ll tell Brooke too that you’ve known her since the beginning:) thank you so much and I hope you have the most beautiful Monday!

I swear we went to yogurtland?! Or maybe I’m remembering something else. Thanks Therese, grateful for you and I hope your Monday is off to a beautiful start.

I just got brain freeze this weekend, drinking my too-cold smoothie. I can’t imagine not knowing what that feels like. :)

I’ve been reading your blog since the very early days–before you were pregnant with Brooke. You’re still my favorite read of the day. I can’t believe how grown-up Brooke looks! And Skye for that matter…how is time going so fast??

Wishing you a wonderful week!

The privilege of not having brain freezes… they will never understand what we go through. You just made me tear up (I’m an emotional wreck today haha). Thank you. It means the world to me. Sending love to you, Joy!

I tell myself that I will keep my car clean after every time that I clean it. And then you know how that goes.
I have been around since Brooke was sitting on the kitchen counter with her tongue sticking out while attempting to twist on/off the milk cap.
75 minute Peloton rides?? I have maxed at 45 minutes. Impressive!

Reply

Hahaha I feel you… and I always say we won’t eat in the car after I clean it, and then we do four minutes later. OKAY… you just brought back all of the memories. Thank you for that! My PT told me to ride the bike as long as I was going to run that day hahah… it was hard. Hope your Monday is off to a great start, Molly!

I picked up the Novablast TR (tail version). Do not think they are waterproof, but definitely have more trail like tread on the bottom with the Asics sale…only $75. Haven’t had snow yet, but will definitely be using them when we do.

Reply

Ummmm how do I not know about the Novablast TR?! Off to buy them nowwwwwww. Thanks Amy for the tip!

I remember when she was born!
And multi color type ;)

I am going to do a multi color type day soon hahah… get ready for a flashback:). Thanks for being here with me over the years, it means a lot. Have a great day, Christina!

Love it! Are those Nike trails shoes you linked your go-to for running on icy/snowy roads?

Reply

YES, I love them so much (I have the older version that they don’t sell anymore)! Hope you love them too. Have a wonderful day, Pegah!

I get brain freezes instantly but my husband never does and cannot understand why I will only take teeny bites of something like shakes or ice cream. I read an article on it a few years back and apparently a pretty large segment of the population doesn’t get brain freezes!

Snow running—I actually am pretty freaked out by the possibility of falling since I hate being sidelined by injury. So I will either run on the treadmill or wait until the roads are clear. Where I live we don’t get too much snow, probably just 1-2 really big storms a year, but we tend to get more ice storms which are super scary as a runner!

Reply

Hahah no way! If you see that article again, you have to send it to me for me to send to my brother. I try to avoid brain freezes at all costs like you. I think you are very smart to do that… I do not want to take time off due to injury either! Ummm ice storms would really freak me out too. Hope your day is a wonderful one, Rachael!

I wear Yak Traks over my running shoes whenever it is snowy or icy out. I think I run slower in them, but at least I’m still running! I love seeing you out running in the wintery weather, it motivates me to do the same!

Reply

I’d rather run slower and stay upright than risk slipping and seriously injuring myself trying to run fast on it. We’ve got it this winter, Rachel!

I cannot believe how Brooke has grown up so fast! Even since you and Andrew got married!
I must say that I am jealous of how beautiful the snow is…. Until I think about getting out for a run in the cold temps, ha. But I love how quiet and peaceful the snow makes everything feel, especially in the morning.
After this week of the toy and food drive, I will be getting back into training mode, yay. Specifically for the Ragnar SoCal, but thinking about a couple of half marathons too.
Happy Monday!

You can come visit us or your family in colorado whenever you need a fill of the snow and then go back home to your gorgeous area. Good luck this week with the drive, I can’t wait to hear how much you were able to collect. Ragnar SoCal… ahhh I am so thrilled for you! Thanks Wendy, you too!

I’ve been here since your teaching days, colorful fonts, and cycling playlists! Brooke is growing up so quickly! I just love your mother-daughter relationship, so much!

Snow running scares me! I get nervous on wet leaves, icy conditions are a treadmill day for me, easy decision.

Reply

Rachel, we have been friends for over a decade, that makes me so happy. Oh how I miss those playlists days haha… I remember thinking I was just a pioneer in posting the songs that were basically just the top 10 list of music;). Wet leaves are so freaky. I totally agree with you. Can’t wait to get my treadmill up and running soon! Better to be safe than sorry! Hope your day is a wonderful one!

I cannot handle how your ankles show when it’s cold out! makes me cold just looking at you! And jealous of your snow. We would love to have some this winter in tennessee!

Reply

Hahah I swear my ankles don’t have nerves to feel anything… it doesn’t make sense. We have a guest room, come on over and enjoy the snow! Hope you guys get some in Tennessee soon. Thanks, Mary!

Been here since Brooke was tiny (pre-Andrew!), and I can’t believe how grown up she is! My current never again is a turkey trot. Please remind me next Thanksgiving that it is a no for me, haha. ;) Happy birthweek to Skye!

Reply

Tiny Brooke! Thanks for being my friend over the years. I will definitely remind you next year… you need to sleep in and avoid the most likely blizzard that we will have;). THANK YOU, TESS!

I started reading about a month before Brooke was born. She is a lovely girl and I can’t believe how grown up she is!

My only fall on ice was at an ice skating rink. I broke my tailbone and my body hurts just thinking about it.

I definitely get brain freezes, but I can see the reasoning with your two littles. I’m the youngest of four, so I had to claw my way up. The fight for your fair share is real.

Reply

No way! We have been friends for so long, Kathy. You broke your tailbone… OUCH. No more ice skating for you. Claw is the perfect word! Hope your day is a wonderful one, Kathy!

I can’t believe how grown up Brooke is! All your kids are adorable. I’ve been reading forever, remember you moving while pregnant and little Spikey being born.

I had never had brain freeze until about 2 weeks ago! I guess I just wasn’t trying hard enough, hahaha. From a chocolate peanut butter fudge sundae, so totally worth it.

Reply

Ohhhhhh thank you, Tracy. We’ve been friends for SO long. I wonder if Brooke’s kids will have spikey hair like she did haha?! Your first brain freeze was just two weeks ago?! What a life you’ve lived being able to avoid them haha. But you are so right, totally worth it. Happy Monday, Tracy!

I have been reading since before Brooke was born. I remember you running a little in the hospital parking lot when you went to give birth. :) She’s growing up to be such a sweet person.

Reply

Ohhhhh Amy, thank you for reminding me of that moment. It was such a sweet moment that I had with Brooke’s grandma that I’ll never forget. Thank you and hope you have the best day!

Reply

I was thinking that when you posted a photo of her the other day….I have been following since you were counting your run in the hospital parking lot as your daily run while you were pregnant with her! So wild to me, truly has been so fun watching them grow up and see their little personalities come through my computer screen.
Running thing I wish I could quit…overdoing my mileage. I pound on them until my calves scream at me and then I wonder why new shoes feel so good? I should know better…
That snow looks amazing! It is in the high 60’s, low 70’s here in Honolulu and I have to say I am LOVING wearing a long sleeve again with the thumb holder. :-) I need to find a snowy place to live part time.
have a great day!

I’ve been here since she was born and all you wore were Brooks! :). I’m not jealous of the snow running at all but I love all of the beautiful snowy run pics. Lol.

Reply

Yes- I’ve fallen on ice and it is annoying!
I’ve never had brain freeze! I do feel lucky b/c it sounds terrible. I would be so sad to eat ice cream painfully slow.

I have been here since before Brooke was born! I remember the colorful fonts and posting more than once a day! I have always said that Brooke was the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen. My favorite photo of her is the one where she is. “exercising“ with you around age 9 months or so? With her little legs on the air copying you. I think you are both wearing white shirts and pink shorts.

4 years ago I fell……fractured my occipital bone, and a huge concussion. , knocked out on a run on my own..thought if I ran faster with a lighter step I woudn’t fall……it took me almost 3 months to get back to almost normal…..scared the heck out of me…..I used to think I could deal with ice and snow, find dry pavement, traction….not anymore. I’ll use shoes with better traction…..a little heavier, a little slower, but stronger once the snow’s gone….and if there’s too much snow to get in a good run….cross country skiing…

I remember when Brooke was born! I don’t have kids, but I do have nieces & nephews, & it’s always wild to me how fast they grow up.
I make run promises to myself a lot – like I’m going to add strength training to this training season & I don’t always keep those promises. But I’m a work in progress so it’s all good 😊

Reply

I remember when she was super super little but I’m not sure I remember her being born! I was reading your blog and Runladylike and maybe a couple of others before social media really took off.

The believe in the run guys have good suggestions for waterproof shoes. I think they really like the novablast TR version and then the goretex version of a few shoes (nike pegasus trail?). I’m in the South so i don’t have this problem!
