International Marathon #2?!? +Things This Week!

We are back home again with the kids this week and doing our best to avoid dying from jet lag and everything we packed in the last 1.5 weeks.

We were invited over to a friend’s house to celebrate the recent marathon performances of Jared Ward, Conner Mantz, and Clayton Young. You will never meet more humble humans, even though they are the fastest in our country.

The kids loved every second of this party… it was at the most incredible house ever:

We love this stir-fry sauce.

Brooke had Egypt Day at school!

And it is never too soon in the season to get started on all of the peppermint treats, in my opinion.

Let’s take a few moments to rewind to the night of the Budapest Marathon.

We were at the most amazing Georgian restaurant (truly the best restaurant I have ever eaten at… and for once, I am not exaggerating) together with the City Sightseeing group. We all became such good friends as we spent hours together at restaurants and touring Hungary. They told us they had a surprise for us, but I didn’t think twice about anything else because they had already spoiled us beyond belief.

The night before the race, the CEO called and told our hosts that if one of us were to win the marathon, he would bring the whole group out to the next round in Seville, Spain. They didn’t tell us this before the race because they didn’t want to pressure anyone because they wanted us to run just the way we felt like running that day. Andrew is grateful they didn’t tell us this because he thinks I would have ripped both of my hamstrings attempting to win so soon after the St George Marathon🤣. BUT Mitch (aka Superman) naturally felt like going out with the lead men and then deciding whether or not to stay with them based on how he was feeling (he ran Chicago in 2:20 the weekend before🤯). He felt great and led the entire race. He won. We all freaked out that we were with the marathon winner and that he had such a great day.

We were all on cloud nine after the race because of how well everyone did and how good the food and conversation were, and then the CEO FaceTimed us. He was so kind about everyone’s accomplishments that day and then said he wanted to invite us to run the Seville Marathon. Mitch, Andrew, and I all said, “Yes, someday we would love to come out and run that marathon,” thinking we would all need to save up to make it happen. And then he clarified he offered to take us all there to run the marathon this February! Expenses covered. I went into complete shock. I legit felt like I won the lottery AGAIN (the first time being when I opened my email from them about the Hungary marathon).

Mitch won a trip for us to all go to Spain now! City Sightseeing has been beyond generous to us, and I am still in disbelief. We are planning on bringing our kids with us this time and going to explore Spain with our kids and our new best friends there.

I took one week off after StG and at least ten days off after Budapest to start training for Seville! I cannot believe it.

They will host three additional runners to come through their contest again (best story, fastest male, and fastest female), so apply, and maybe you will join us in Spain!!! Apply HERE!

Sunday night, before we found out about the trip to Spain, we were so sad about maybe never seeing our new friends again. It made me tear up thinking about it. Hugging them that night and saying, “See you soon” was the best present ever.

Spain, here we come!

I love these humans so much.

When I asked Andrew if he would do the Seville Marathon, he responded, “I’ll make the sacrifice for you of watching the kids and skip running it this time.” That is so selfless of him;).

But I think I might be able to convince him over the next few months to do it.

Who has been to Spain?! Tell me everything!!!

What are the odds you think I’ll be able to convince Andrew to run Seville?

Anyone else on fall break?

-Ours just started, and we decided to take the kids camping… nothing like camping with four kids while still recovering from Jet Lag;)

Who will be in marathon training during the winter?

This may be one of the greatest blog posts.
Ok first off. Ex-squeeze me! You hung out with WHO? My voice still hurts from cheering for Conner with 800 meters to go at Chicago.
Next-Spain?? I really hope this works out with the family and you guys go! Also, I’ll sign up to be part of the drawing. What do I have to lose?? Famous last words.

Right?! I wanted a picture with them but felt too nervous to ask. Maybe the next one?! Oh I can only imagine how loud you were screaming. SIGN UP SIGN UP SIGN UP! Hope your day is a great one, Molly!

WOW. Mitch is a hero! This is super exciting, but I don’t know if you’ll be able to convince Andrew. You need him to watch the kids anyway! I’ve never been to Spain- I’m sure it will be another exciting adventure for you.
I LOVE Jared Ward, and I saw Connor and Clayton being interviewed after Chicago- they do seem like the nicest people in the world.

Hero is the correct word! Hahah I think he is going to be more than happy to skip this one. Seriously, it’s so amazing to have such humble, kind men leading the US men’s distance right now… especially because we know they are clean athletes. It’s really cool. Hope your day is a great one, Jenny!

Ahhh!! I was just getting on here to tell you you should run the Seville marathon!!! Crazy!! I’m from Georgia USA and have lived in Seville for 13 years! I’ve run the Seville marathon 4 times and it is THE best! It’s a flat, beautiful course! You’re going to love it here! Definitely reach out if you have any questions!!

No way! Brittany, I MUST meet you there. Will you be running it this year? Hope you are having a beautiful day!

No!! Unfortunately I won’t be. I’m working back up after a tendon injury, but I would so love to meet you and definitely cheer you on!!! Let’s be in touch! I’m so excited for you!!

I couldn’t be happier for you and your fam!! This is all a wink from Mer in heaven :) <3

Wow, Meghan. Now that you say that, I totally think it is. I hope you have the most beautiful day and thank you for that reminder.

– Good things happen to good people! That is so amazing!!
– Andrew would totally run it, but getting the kids around to watch you on the course will be a different kind of marathon for him.
– No fall break here, we need to petition the adult world into adding a fall break to the work schedule.
– I trained through the worst Utah winter last year for a spring marathon – hopefully never again. (never say never)

Thank you, Mindy! That means a lot. They offered a great nanny if he decides to do it but I think you are right… he wants a marathon where he is chasing me around taking pics;). I absolutely agree with you. Every job needs to offer a fall break. Mandatory. Never say never… I said the same thing last year;). This marathon is flat so I think I’ll be on the treadmill a lot! Hope your day is off to a great start!

Seville is amazing, but please please make the trip to Granada to see the Alhambra! It’s once in a lifetime gorgeous. Your kids will love it too. Go at sunset:)

I don’t know why I replied to that comment and not the main post. Tech issues!

WOW!!! That is amazing that you get another international marathon.

We’ve only been in the Barcelona airport, but we’d love to go back to Spain, especially after watching American Sepp Kuss win La Vuelta last month. (I’m pretty sure our next trip to Europe is going to be a cycling trip for Les and his brother. I told him I will only agree if I can go and take cooking classes in France or Italy!)

The odds of Andrew running Seville with you may increase the closer you get to the marathon. Something tells me a sub 4 might be the bait. But I wouldn’t bring that up just yet ;)

Reply

Thanks Kathy! Time to recover and then train again. Come with us:). Oh Andrew wants to do a cycling trip to Europe so badly. Hahaha you have a point… I think I’ll bring it up after Thanksgiving;). Have a wonderful day!

This is incredible! Congrats and wow this is so thrilling that you get to run in Spain in just 4 months! I absolutely would try to do this if I wasn’t already running Boston! I was looking at the website and there are some really incredible locations, I may have to revisit this next year 😉
I have no been to Spain yet, but it is definitely on my list!

Have a fun fall break!!

Tell Andrew, I’ve got the kids……….or he has the kids I’ll run in his spot. ;)
Seriously though, s.u.p.e.r exciting.
Not training for something specific this winter, but I always log my most miles in the winter. It’s my medical cure for lack of sunlight.

How exciting!!! I will be training for a half marathon during the winter. But I applied for the Chicago Marathon lottery this week! Slightly freaking out if I do get selected as it will be my first marathon. Any tips on where to find the right marathon plan for me?

What noodles do you use in your shrimp stir fry? Looks amazing!!

Reply

Hey Laura! I just grab whatever ramen noodles in the refrigerated area that my store has… they are soft when you buy them and just need to be warmed up. So good. You need them. Have a wonderful day!

Wow that’s amazing! I went to Spain in college and it’s beautiful. You have to have the churros and chocolate while you’re there. You’ll love it.

Reply

No way! That is so great! Ummm I will carb load with those and recover with those:). Thanks, Caitlin and I hope you have a great day!

This is fantastic!!! So excited for you guys!!!
Andrew can totally run it!! I say “no more” after every marathon. Even had it printed in ine If my mugs that I get for each one. Lol. I just ran another. He deep down wants to run it. His base is already there!!!

That ice cream!!!! YUM! I bet it would be good with chocolate sauce/fudge topping too.

I’ve only been to Barcelona and Madrid and LOVED both places!! Spain is just so lovely! Congrats on the entry!!!

Enjoy camping!!! You are such a fun family!

I’ve been to Barcelona twice and the city is magical!

I wish ALL schools did a fall break. We are so burnt out over here!

I have a race at the beginning of April, so I’ll probably start following a training plan at the end of December :) I’m super excited about a spring marathon as opposed to a fall one when I am still coaching cross country. It can be super difficult to schedule my runs in the mix of my kids’ runs.

Hi! Long time reader, but I rarely comment. I’m from Pennsylvania, but I’ve been living in Southern Spain since 2016…I think you’ll love Seville!! Here for you if you have any questions :)

Reply

wow! that’s amazing. I just entered, one my best friends and former running buddy lives in Spain now. I would love to see her and get in a race. I’ve only been to Barcelona, but Spain is breathtaking. and TAPAS!!

Reply

I am from Málága, Andalucía like Sevilla. Sevilla is very flat so the run is “easy”. From Sevilla you can go to visit Málaga o Madrid o Córdoba easily with train, for went to Granada maybe you need a car (more easy) and if you want yo visit la Alhambra you need to buy the ticket with a lot of time anticipacion (I highly reccomend the visit). You are gonna enjoy the food and usually good weather (Sevilla is more colder than Málaga but nothing like Utah 😂). If you wanna see the beach anda eat good fish Cádiz (with car) or Málaga (train) . Depend the time you have you have to chose. Madrid for example need a few days, Sevilla in one day or two is enough, Málaga or Granada in one day you can see the most part.
Sorry for my writing in english 😅

That is so amazing!!! Can’t wait to hear all about it. That would be a dream of mine, so it will be nice to live vicariously through you AND Andrew! Yes you Andrew. Lol
I will be training for a 50k in February so will be on the same training schedule as you all.

This is amazing!! I had so much fun following along with your Budapest adventures. Can’t wait to see Spain. I’ve only been to Barcelona. It will be an amazing trip for your whole family.

I have been to Spain but never to Seville! I am already jealous of all the tapas you will eat.

Reply

So many tapas‼️. Come do the marathon with us and we can eat them together! I hope you have a beautiful Friday!

You’re running the marathon in Seville!! Congrats! That will be amazing!!

I just back from Seville this summer with my boys, 7 and 4 and they loved it! I could tell you about all the cool regular tourist things that we did, but the thing that they are still talking about is the theme park. They are still talking about the pirate ship there and the one ride that we didn’t have time to go to (because we needed way more time that we though that we would…). Don’t get me wrong, they also loved the cathedral and the Alcazar and the churros and chocolate and trying to figure out how people drive on those narrow roads and the fact that we didn’t have dinner until 9pm, but they’re still talking about the pirate ship…

I’m happy to send you my blog posts if you want more kid-ideas.
