October has been quite the roller coaster of emotions for us.

I still cannot believe the amount of pain that he experienced. Andrew refused to be taken in an ambulance (umm we definitely met our out of pocket for the year so we should have) and had to be in the waiting room for 30 minutes before he was taken back. I never want to relive those 30 minutes again. I was so helpless and just watched him struggle so much as his leg was dangling.

Andrew is always the one taking care of us (and patients) and so this was quite the change for everyone. Brooke and knox were very traumatized by it all because they saw the whole thing. They have all been worried sick but they sure stepped up to the plate and have been following him around helping him and getting him everything he needs.

Even Beck has been on his best behavior for Andrew and taking time out of his busy day to snuggle him.

In the ER we met with an orthopedic PA that told us nobody would do surgery on him for 10-14 days because of how swollen it was… we couldn’t imagine him living like this for so long. We called my brother (ER doctor) and he said absolutely not. The sooner he had the surgery the better for his recovery and long term well being.

My brother worked his magic and scheduled surgery for him less than 48 hours after the accident. We will forever owe him.

Until we left for the surgery we did everything we could to keep him comfortable and the injury elevated above his heart.

My sister brought over a special smoothie for him (that he will be drinking daily during recovery) filled with every nutrient on the planet.

He needed to be outside to see the sun so we set him up outside!

On Saturday we left the kids with family and made the trek to my brother’s hospital in Vernal so his friend could perform the surgery.

Thank goodness we have a bus 🤣 so we could properly elevate his leg on the 2.5 hour drive. I haven’t driven for that long in years… Andrew is always the one driving.

My nephew was thrilled to see Andrew. These two are best friends.

The kids wanted to be updated every hour.

We slept at my brother’s house and then went to the hospital first thing in the morning.

I’ve never been to my brother’s hospital so it was interesting to see him there in action.

The surgeon met with us and gave us so much good news. In the ER we were told Andrew couldn’t put weight on his leg for three months. We were told he wouldn’t run for a year and to expect to wait to mountain bike until 2025. He was so depressed.

The amazing surgeon in Vernal wants him walking with a boot as soon as the incision is healed because the research shows that is actually the best thing for him (so in about two weeks)! He expects him to be running in 4 months. We were so relieved.

Until they went over possible chances of problems with anesthesia, infection and blood clots. I felt like I was going to pass out.

They wheeled Andrew back and my brother was able to be with me for most of the time and he did a fabulous job distracting me.

About 80 minutes later and he was done. The surgeon did it perfectly and got everything back in place. They also needed to repair a ligament and had a plate and 6 screws put in… he should experience a lot less pain now. I cannot imagine if he had to wait another minute for surgery.

Once he was able to leave the hospital we went back to my brother’s house. We wanted to make sure he was really okay before we headed home.

I cannot thank you enough for all of your love and support. I think we were getting too comfortable in life and so October needed to really teach us some things. We have been spoiled by everyone in our life and we will do the same for you when you need us.

Thank goodness for your brother and family and getting the surgery scheduled quickly. My parents always taught me to get a second opinion. Prayers for Andrew as he recovers.

Janae, I am so sorry to hear about all the pain your family is going through. Y’all continue to be in my prayers. So thankful that Andrew’s surgery went well; here’s hoping he gets some relief! It’s so cool to me how nowadays, doctors are more inclined to tell you to get up and out of bed post surgery (for most things; a friend of mine had a heart transplant and they had him walking on a treadmill as soon as his incision allowed it). I think that’s proof that our bodies are meant to MOVE. Anyway, sending y’all lots of love and prayers from Louisiana. And special prayers for healing and pain relief for Andrew.

Yay! I’m glad surgery was done and went well!
I barely made it through when my husband had his wisdom teeth removed. He was fine. I needed consoling.
And good thing that nurses make the best patients. Hehehe

I’m so glad the surgery could happen quickly and that it went well. I wanted to recommend a supplement called cissus quadrangularis that is useful for healing injuries. I haven’t used it for an injured bone but I did take it years ago for an injured tendon and it worked very well.

Wishing Andrew and your whole family the best!

Such a rollercoaster of emotions the last few weeks. And crazy how much medical advice can vary. I’m glad he’s on the other side of surgery and that his prognosis is much better than you first thought. I hope everyone is able to get some rest and healing now.

Hi Janae,
I am so rorry Andrew and your family had to experience this. Injuries suck! I just wanted to share a resource I found quite helpful when i was struhgling with a long termin injury myself: The injured athletes club and podcast. It’s hosted by a sports psychologist and she shares valuable tips on how to deal with injuries mentally.

Get well soon, Andrew — what a horrific injury. He must be one tough cookie because he’s somehow smiling through pain in many of the pics you shared :)

So happy to hear things went so well. And I’m so glad to hear the recovery will be quicker. You’re still young Andrew, you’ll be back at it no time.

At least it’s football season, you’ve got that and post season baseball to watch!

Oh wow, so glad Andrew got surgery and is on the mend! Thank God your brother was able to get him scheduled for the surgery at his hospital. I can’t imagine having to wait two weeks with his leg in that state and so much pain – that must have been so scary to hear that at the ER! Curious if your brother has suggestions for people who are ever in a similar spot but don’t have any doctor friends/relatives who can advocate for them like your brother did for Andrew. Would love to hear any tips he has for us non-medical folks!

Prayers for a speedy recovery!

So glad your brother was able to help you both. Les has had several surgeries and the wait for wives is so painful! Sending you both lots of love and hugs. Praying for a speedy recovery!

Poor Andrew! My friend had to have surgery on her ankle a few years back and instead of a knee scooter or crutches, she used a “peg leg” crutch. She’s a massage therapist and it worked great for her to still be able to work and get around the table. She got really good at navigating with that peg leg! I tell everyone that has to do crutches or a knee scooter about her so they can look into other mobility options. Best of luck for a quick healing!

Such a great update!!! Yikes, being told 3 months of no weight-bearing is crazy and intense and clearly not true – thankfully! Better days ahead for sure :)

So glad he made it through. With Andrew’s love of biking, did you notice the X-ray looks like he has a bicycle chain in his leg? Thought that mike make you guys smile.

Love your blog!!! Sending all the positive vibes for a great recovery! Love that you are getting him outside into sunshine, so great for mental recovery too! I know sometimes the mental can be harder than the physical. Cheering you all on from afar. Your family is so wonderful and I so enjoy each of your posts.

Hey Janae,

Glad to hear he got the surgery. You might want to ask at his follow up but my doctor let me ride the indoor bike sooner than running (I have three titanium screws in my femur). So that may be an option for Andrew — I was like him practically climbing the walls to get back to activity. Also, if the screws start bothering him down the line (mine do when it gets super cold) topical Voltaren is really good. It penetrates down to the screw head and helps. Hopefully recovery continues to go well!
