Who I’ll be thinking about during the race and Brooke’s parkour.

I didn’t know what to do yesterday morning without a run on the agenda.  I always run on Thursday mornings but not yesterday because my training called for giving my legs as much rest as possible.

IMG 2384

So instead of running we finished up most of our Christmas shopping for my family.  I did end up getting Christmas pajamas for myself while we were out because I wanted to join Brooke in our yearly Christmas pajama tradition.  Plus, winter means I am in pajamas usually from 5 pm on.

Most comfortable/soft/heavenly leggings and pj top ever (all 40% off now too!)

IMG 2388

I got all of the stocking necessities too.  EVERY year as kids we got one of these Life Savers Storybooks… and every year we never ate them;)

IMG 2386

My mom is back in town and so we met up at Which Wich to catch up.

Carbs and protein for me and an awesome chocolate milk straw with Brooke’s meal.

There are a lot of people I will be thinking about during the marathon on Sunday but Brooke and my parents will fill up my thoughts for a lot of the miles.  Between my mom’s pep talks, support, coming to races, babysitting for the long runs and my dad driving next to me anytime I had to run in the dark, passing me my gatorade/gu and cheering me on—>  they have done everything they possibly can to help me chase these goals of mine.  They are the greatest.

IMG 2393

Brooke has just been casually doing parkour around the apartment these days.  Jumping from couch to couch and rocking the handstand when she needed a break from helping me clean.

IMG 2403

So… there is an extremely special guy in my life and we had an anniversary to celebrate last night which meant we went up to the Foundry Grill in Sundance for the occasion.

Fried brussels sprouts?  Ridiculously good.

IMG 2406

For my meal I had the gnocchi.

IMG 2410

We got to sit right next to the fireplace which was pretty great.

IMG 2411

I’ve only lived in Utah pretty much my entire life and I still cannot wear proper footwear for the snow/ice… I almost slipped fifty times in these. Real good idea right before my race.

IMG 2413

I used my favorite mug that my aunt gave me last year. Tomorrow will be my Twas the night before the race….

A must read for runners!

And the last thing I want to leave you with this Friday morning.  Knock knock round 2.  I guess we probably go to Target too much.

PS make sure to follow along this weekend in Arizona on Instagram!

What are you looking forward to this weekend?

Do you feel more tired on the days that you don’t run too?

-It is so weird because you’d think I would feel more energetic on the days I don’t run but that is not the case.

Very good feelings about this race for you janae! During a marathon I wind up thinking a lot about life – it can get very deep!

I did my second marathon in Amsterdam! It was amazing, but a lot of it was on cobble stone so that hurt. And I did my first on the Appalachian train, but I was living near there at the time so not very destination.

Brook is too adorable with that knock knock joke! I love Target too so I’m with her. and ooo happy anniversary!

I’m most excited about running the St. Jude marathon tomorrow here in Memphis! Excited/nervous/so ready to just run.

Good luck Sunday!! Sending all the good thoughts and prayers

I loved those Lifesaver storybooks as a kid! I can’t believe you didn’t eat the candy though. I would usually wait a while but eventually the lifesavers would call my name ;)

Happy anniversary! All of that food looks delicious and like excellent fuel for a couple of days before your big race. This time next week you’ll be living in PR-ville!!

I’m moving this weekend, so I’m not looking forward to the actual moving process, but I’m definitely looking forward to getting settled into my new place!

I always feel so tired on days I don’t run. Running helps wake me up in the mornings!

I love how sweet your parents are!! Mine are very similar and are so supportive of me, so I keep them in my thoughts while I’m racing, too. I always think about how I can’t wait to get to the finish to see them and hear them cheering for me. :)

Reply

I’m definitely more tired on days I don’t run or workout in general. I usually think about all the people who have helped me with my training, the people I love and anyone I know who is struggling (with anything). When I start to get tired during the race I think about what others are going thru and how it is way more difficult than running a race.

I’m looking forward to the St. Jude marathon tomorrow!

Congrats on your anniversary! Foundry Grill is a great place to celebrate!!

Reply

Running helps wake me up in the mornings. I notice I tend to nap on the days I don’t run. My favorite destination race was the Portland Marathon in Oregon. Portland is such a fun city and the race itself is incredible.
I really feel like Sunday is going to be a great race for you!

Fried Brussels sprouts?! Sounds interesting…!

I’m looking forward to the adopt a family event that I’m helping out at. It should be a wonderful time!

Good luck this weekend!!!! I am on the same train as you…sub 3 or bust- your training has been spot on, you are ready.
I love that you posted the hip article! I was just reading it last night after looking at my form in recent race pics; my hips need help!! I have also started going to Pure Barre to work on my strength in my glutes- can already tell a difference.
Safe travels

Aw, so happy for you, Janae! Lucky guy :) Oh man I got one of those Lifesavers things every year too… haven’t thought about them in years! Also is it sad that I am totally jealous of Brooke’s straw?! ha I will be thinking of you lots this weekend!!!

Reply

Wishing you the absolute best in your race! You’ve worked so hard and you are ready to kill it out there!

I am looking forward to my very first 8 mile run (longest I’ve run is 7 miles) as part of my training for my first 1/2 marathon.

And I always feel way more tired on days I don’t run in the morning. I think running puts me in the right mind set to tackle the rest of the day and helps me be a better version of myself.

Reply

Good luck this weekend, you got this! :)

Reply

I am totally more tired on the days I don’t run! Um, those fried Brussels sprouts look awesome, love Brussels sprouts. Wishing you the best for this race!!

Good luck this weekend! Can’t wait to follow you! You are going to ROCK it!

Those pajamas are so cute and your fireside dinner looks very romantic :)
This weekend I am looking forward to hanging out with some friends from college and going on a long hike/run with my fiance.
I usually feel more tired on days that I don’t run or workout. I think it’s the lack of endorphin’s or something.
I have never done a destination race but I think it would be really fun to do a Disney race!
I have only done 5k races so far so there usually isn’t much time to get a lot of deep thoughts in. During those races though, I usually thought about my pace and what time I would finish in.

Reply

I’m doing a local 5k called The Big Chill. The “fee” for the race is a new unwrapped toy. It’s such a wonderful way to get in the holiday spirit knowing you are bringing toys for some kids who might not have much these days.
I’m also going to look at some houses (preliminary stages of peeking around to see what I can afford :) and then Sunday the boyfriend and I are going to take the dogs hiking. Can’t wait!
And you!!!! Have an amazing race!!! Go get it girl…

Reply

OMG … my parents used to put the Lifesavers storybook in our stockings each Christmas too! We never ate them either ;) Glad to know we aren’t the only family who experiences this – too funny!

Reply

Congrats on your anniversary with your “special guy”. I wish you many more anniversaries to celebrate! ?
This weekend, I am starting Christmas planning – specifically, I am working on some of the gifts I am making. It’s also my friends birthday and we’ll be celebrating with a special lunch at church tomorrow. Lots to look forward to.

I hope you don’t find this weird/creepy, but I am so excited for your race!!!!!! You can do hard things, Janae!!!!!!
BTW: Those fried brussel sprouts look to die for!

Love the video! too cute! I am always more tired/lethargic on the days I don’t work out. I think exercise just gives me a boost of energy that carries me through the day. My first half marathon was in Nashville (Rock N Roll series) which is where I am from and it was amazing. Definitely a destination you should check out. There are bands and crowds along the entire course, which is such a great motivator to keep going! I am going to “observe” a therapy dog in action … it is the first step in my dog and I becoming a Dog Therapy Team!! I am excited!!! Good luck in your race!!! You will do amazing!!

Reply

I still get those lifesaver books every year! And every year I throw out the previous year’s :) We also get Hershey Symphony bars because my parents say those are the classy chocolate bars so they’re for holidays! I ran a race in Hershey Park which was fun (they have a chocolate “water” stop at mile 11), and one in Central Park on my birthday. I’m also doing one in Vancouver next year that should be really fun!

Reply

Vancouver, BC? Which one? I am doing a few as well! ..sorry if it is Vancouver, Portland :(

Reply

Yes in Canada! Its Lululemon’s one..Seawheeze. What about you??

Reply

Oh so much fun! That race sells out in a few hours and I didn’t make it BUT I am volunteering at that race. Everyone LOVES this race!

I am doing the BMO Race (May) and the 5 Peaks Races (http://www.5peaks.com/shop/british-columbia-race-pass) Its a most excellent race series.

Reply

If you have a bit of time after (days) I would recommend the “Grouse Grind” ..its a great tourist hike and super hard on the lungs but great views and snacks at the top with grizzly bears (they are sectioned off, no worries about getting snacked on!)

Reply

GOOD LUCK JANAE! Run fast, strong, and happy on Sunday. You’ve put in all the work, think of the race as your celebration. So proud of you already and I absolutely cannot wait to hear about it on Monday. You’re going to be amazing. xoxo

that restaurant with the fire place looks so cozy!!

LOVED the article, thanks for sharing! I’m all about emphasizing posture and form when it comes to both everyday activity and sports alike. Best quote from the article: “a strong butt is the key to a happy life” Amen.

Reply

My favorite destination race was the 10.6 miler I did in Big Sur. I LOVE the Carmel/Big Sur area of California. I want to live there!!

I’m looking forward to Christmas shopping and watching Christmas movies this weekend!!

Reply

Definitely more tired on days where I don’t run. And more irritable too. Like the weather will bother me. Or the traffic. Or someone saying hi the wrong way. Ok I’ll stop. Can you tell I didn’t run today?

Reply

That dinner looks amazing!
Fave destination race– hard to choose! Probably New Orleans, Miami, or LA. All super fun races! I think my favorite above all will be Paris after I run this April.
Looking forward to hearing how the run goes this weekend!!!

Reply

Best of luck out there on the marathon course this weekend!

I’m looking forward to catching up with a college friend I haven’t seen in 5 years!

Reply

Good luck this weekend! So excited for you! I love the idea of thinking of special people while running your marathon. You’ve got so many great supporters in your life.

Reply

if a race is longer than a 5k, I think about one person per mile. makes them fly by!

I’m a pajama addict, and have to stop myself from buying all the supercute holiday-themed pajamas.

This weekend, I’m looking forward to relaxing, getting my house cleaned up a bit, and relaxing some more. I have a bunch of holiday events coming up, so the weeks feel LONG (fun, but long).

PS- happy anniversary!

Reply

I don’t get too deep while running – races or otherwise. I usually think about the vacation I’m about to embark on AFTER the race or what I want to purchase as a treat. During the day, after a race or morning workout or run, is when I think about “real” stuff. Running and working out time is my selfish time.

Reply

Looking forward to my “long run” even though it will probably only be 5-6 miles. And a hike with the BF! He has Sunday off ( a rare occurrence ) & the weather is supposed to be mild AND sunny!

Rock it this weekend! Can’t wait to read your race recap!

Reply

This week has been so busy, I’m excited for it to be over this weekend. We have lots of parties this weekend too.

Hooray for race weekend!! Tucson is a great course to rock it at! I PRed by 19 minutes to run a 3:14 on that course one year so you can most definitely PR by 12!! Go get it!

My son and I have been in AZ for the past 2 1/2 weeks and we head back to Texas tomorrow to reunite with my husband (he was with us up until 3 days ago) but FINALLY!

Favorite race is the Phoenix Marathon (sounds lame I know but it’s the only marathon I’ve done a couple times since having my little boy a couple years ago and I LOVE being able to run to him at the end!)

Best of luck in Tucson!! Embrace the desert scenery!!! :)

What a fun anniversary date! It looked like you had a wonderful time! I LOVE Brooke’s sweet smile in the video, she seriously melts my heart! My daughter is almost two, and her little grin is my favorite. :) You are going to kick butt in your race!!!

I definitely notice that I feel more tired on the days I don’t run. You’re right, you would think it would be the opposite but its not. I am looking forward to celebrating my mom’s birthday this weekend! I will be thinking of you this weekend at your race!

Just wanted to chime in and wish you GOOD LUCK this weekend! I have no doubt that you are going to rock this marathons socks off!! You are amazing.

I’m in full on nesting mode, so looking forward to cleaning and getting more organized as time is getting down to the wire with my pregnancy!

favorite destination race was Big Sur by far…I don’t think any other one could top it. it was the most amazing race I’ve ever partaken in.

Havent ran much during pregnancy..just didn’t feel right for my body, I was so tired and sick in the 1st trimester. I was also coming off of 2 marathon training cycles and was ready for a little break. I’m SO antsy to get back to it after baby though. I live vicariously through all you other amazing runners out there :)

I’m looking forward to my birthday this weekend! :)

And I’ve never done a destination race. It’s so much money to travel and stay in a hotel, so I try to stay local. My first destination race will be Ironman Coeur d’Alene next year,

Good luck!! You’re gonna be great!!

Thing I’m most looking forward to this weekend is my best friend’s ugly Christmas sweater party! Got a new sweater and reindeer ears ready to go :)

Favorite destination race was either the Sedona Half Marathon which I did years ago or the Lake Tahoe Marathon earlier this year. Both were so beautiful!

Thanks for posting the article- it’s really helpful as I have been working on my glutes lately. I will be rooting for you and thinking “Go Janae”on Sunday morning!!!

I’m so excited for you and your race this weekend!!!! I feel like I’m living all of the running highs through you right now!! I always think about my family and friends during races. A good friend of mine moved away, but was coming back home a few weeks after my first half marathon, the excitement of getting to see her definitely got me through some tough parts of that race!

Reply

Have a GREAT race this weekend. Think about all those positive things you have in your life, and the endless support from your family and friends. It helps!

Reply

Have a great race. Glad there’s an amazing guy. :) Brooke has an amazingly straight back in her handstand.

I’m decorating the house for the holidays this weekend and I may bake something. Husband’s white blood counts are low so he’s not supposed to go out among people in case he gets sick. Next time they’ll give him a shot to boost his counts. He feels fine though, thank heavens.

San Francisco was my favorite destination race.

I think about my loved ones and people who I’m running in memory or honor of. (I run for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society). Cancer just touches everyone so I’ve got a lot of people I hold in my heart when I run.

Reply

:( on the low counts….when my DH has neutropenia, he made sure to stay away from raw fruits and veggies. So everything was super cooked, just like my grandma used to..not the tastiest but oh well!

I hear you on the cancer front!

Reply

Thanks. The nurses did say wash and peel any fruit and cook all veggies. He doesn’t love fruit so I’ll have him stay away from that for a few days at least. I’ve come up with cooked salads. Maybe not what he envisions with a salad but he’s liking them so far. :)

Reply

That’s really good that he likes the cooked versions! Not sure where you are / or what your dealing with but if you need to chat – I am around. DH was diagnosed with CML @ 32 years old. We are now 8 years out and still on chemo but hopefully off soon! He is an amazing runner/ athlete so its really great to be inspired but such a great guy.

Reply

Thanks, that is very nice of you. I’m in NYC. My coaches husband had CML and he came off Gleevac about a year ago. He’s been doing well so hopefully your hubby will too! Mine was just diagnosed with testicular cancer. Which is odd, since he’s 47. It usually hits young.

Reply

Congrats on the anniversary! There will be a ton of positive thoughts directed your way from Chicago this weekend! You have got this.
My favorite destination run was my first half ever – at Disney. I would love a do over of that race – I was way too serious about it. At Disney you just need to plan on having fun.
I always feel sluggish on days I don’t work out. Its been hard the last couple weeks since I am recovering from an injury. I hope to be able to run again soon. Every week I get to add in a different activity. Running is the last one on the list per the physical therapist.

Reply

this weekend looking forward to SLEEP and eat some good food… im pretty easy to please:)

Janae you are going to do so awesomely in your marathon! if there is anyone who can pull off a sub-3, it’s you

And we always got those life savor books in our stockings EVERY year!

Reply

Yep, I’ve been having a recovery week this week and I’ve never felt more tired and creaky! Bodies are so weird. I’m stoked for your race this weekend. I need you to do a sub-3 so you can give me hope to do one too one day!

Reply

I’m sorry, I have to ask: did you blur part of your sandwich order in that pic?!

But seriously, you are going to rock your race. Good luck!!

And I had those Brussels at Sundance recently too—the BEST!!

Reply

I am more tired on days I don’t run, it’s weird, right?!
I love my races I run in Nashville………it’s far enough away to feel like a vacation, but close enough for just a short drive!
I am headed to Connecticut for a work trip…….not excited to fly but excited to go for free to a town I have never been before!

PS…….a fun thing for you and Brooke might be to vote for penguin names! The Tennessee Aquarium (my workplace!) is having a contest to name our 4 female penguins that hatched this summer! The link is on the Tennessee Aquarium facebook page, and you can vote more than once…….contest runs for a little over a week!

Reply

First, I’m so happy you have something to celebrate with a good guy!!! And hose Brussels sprouts are so amazing!! Good luck on this race, I’m cheering for you!

Reply

I think the Lifesavers are a part of life. You just have to have them in your stocking. I never ate mine either. I haven’t passed it on to my grandson so maybe in our family the tradition stops. Hmm.

I wish for you a great race, speedy and safe, but above all something you are happy with.

And happy anniversary…

Good luck Sunday!!

This weekend I am looking forward to running a 5K that I started doing a few years ago as a tribute to my great-grandmother–100% of the proceeds from the race registration fees goes to Alzheimer’s research, and my Granny had Alzheimer’s, so I run this race to honor her and support the cause! I have won my age group the past two years and last year was 2nd female–I’m kind of hoping for a PR this time around : ) Good luck on your marathon, I will cheering for you!

Will be rooting for you in spirit on Sunday. Looking forward to hearing all about it afterwards. Safe travels with your family.

Love the mug!

We fly to Oahu on Sunday for 2 weeks. I’ll be spectating/cheering at the Honolulu Marathon (12/13) and my husband will be riding his bike on the wheelchair escort team. Super fun day!

I tend to drag a bit more on the days I don’t run or ride my bike. Only ran 2 miles this morning but feel so energetic now.

Good luck on Sunday, Janae! You’ve done the work, now go get that sub 3:00!

Reply

Love the article, accurate with it all coming from the glutes and hips. I’m a podiatrist and you foot strike is 90% pre determined from the position your in from further up the body (ie hip/ glute movement) the odd person has structural reasons there foot strike is effected below the hip. Rare and glutes/hips definitely either put you leg in a position to strike correctly. A few thinks… Love the pic of Brooke with the toy hair straightener. Too cute, hope my daughter (6 weeks) is just like her. Adorable.
Your looking happy and stunning on your date, he better look after you haha!
Good luck in advance for tomorrow, well wishes from Australia, have a fun trip with your mum and Brooke. Pain is temporary and you are stronger then you know xxx

That is awesome that your dad drove alongside you for runs in the dark! How sweet. I am going to go read that hip article now! Thanks and good luck again!

Just a funny observation……if you wore those shoes while you were on your date with the “special guy” maybe you subconsciously picked them so if/when you would fall he would be there to catch you????

Hmmm??? Am I right?! Ha!!!

Love the mug!!

My favorite races are our 5 Peaks Trail Races in Vancouver, BC – you get to race 5 different trail runs (1 per mth). My love for trail races is they have great food (usually), good prizes and fellow runners are pretty encouraging.

Who is the guy?? Anniversary? Good on you…you deserve a really fantastic person.

Reply

Lifesavers and LipSmackers!
The handstand ala Brooke is amazing.

I think about the obvious (family), try not to think about yukky things (divorce), but most of all I think about how each moment is not given back and how I must embrace the experience. I also tell myself that by the end of the day the race is a memory so although it’s tough that very second, pretty soon I can think and reflect on it! Then I do some random people watching, singing, daydreaming, etc……..

Sending you awesome gazelle vibes!!!!

I am looking forward to putting up our Christmas tree. (I guess I’m a little late considering everyone has had theirs up for weeks now! Ha!)

I’m also looking forward to logging 4 miles this weekend!

I don’t think about anything besides running when I’m running which is the absolute best! it’s the best way for me to shut my brain off for a little bit each time I run!

No destination races for me yet but I would love to run the NYC Marathon one day! It’s on my bucket list! :)

Good luck this weekend!

Reply

Good luck Sunday! You know we all have been through these ups and downs with you and can’t wait for your success. I so remember those lifesaver books! I am so glad to read that you and all the readers are tired when they don’t run. I thought it was just me and I was strange. :)

What do I think of when I run? I was staying with my Dad in Oregon this past spring because his health was failing. I had a 1/2 marathon on the coast that was planned many months earlier. I knelt on the floor next to his bed and told him I was going to run but would be back in 2 days. He smiled and said one word: “Enjoy”. So when the going gets tough I make sure thats what I do.

Reply

1. Those leggings are very thigh flattering.
2. I also got a stocking Lifesaver book every year and loved it and ate every last bit of it!
3. This is how I always cook my brussel sprouts… fried, and the darker the better, with a splash of balsamic vinegar at the end of cooking

Good luck on Sunday!!

Reply

I always got the lifesavers too! and the candy canes filled with Reese’s peanut butter cups.

Gnocchi by a fire sounds heavenly!

Thanks for posting the article…it was exactly what I needed today! I’ve been trying to work on my form and confess that I am that overextender and my husband is the “make sure you land on your midfoot” person, so this was a perfect read! Thanks!

Reply

Bought a pair of this leggings on Black Friday and wish I would have bought ten. Most comfortable pjs EVER! Good luck on Sunday!

Reply

I’m looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow and dressing up for a fancy dinner tomorrow night. It’s pretty much the one day of the year I wear heels. :)

I am definitely more tired on days that I don’t run.

I haven’t really done a destination race, I tend to stick close to home. My marathon in October was far enough away I actually drove over and stayed in a hotel the night before, which I pretty much never do.

I zone out a lot during races. I also think about friends and family and people who can’t/don’t run.

Reply

Sadly I am looking for Sunday evening to roll around. I know most people say they are looking forward to their free Saturday/Sunday. Our ward Xmas party is Saturday – which I’m helping out a ton with (like almost all day), and I’m supposed to teach Relief Society on Sunday. :S

I’m definitely lazier on days that I don’t workout. And yes, I do feel tired on the days that I don’t run.

Running the Dopey Challenge in January in Orlando Florida. So 2,000 miles away from home with humidity will definitely be different.

j crew sweater? so cute!

Just wanted to add my good wishes for your race! When I race I think about all the people who have supported me and who are tracking me along the course — it motivates me to get to that next timing mat because I know they will be waiting to see the time I cross it. And of course I think about the people waiting for me at the finish line. When it really gets tough, I remind myself of all the tough workouts I completed (tempo runs especially seem to mimic the marathon for me — speed workouts I can handle LOL!) When I was trying to qualify for Boston, I kept telling myself that it wouldn’t be Boston if it was easy (meaning big goals take big effort and it was worth the push) and that I didn’t want to have any regrets. It worked, and I finally get to run my first Boston next spring! Here’s to a sub-3 for you!!

Reply

You’re going to do great at your race lady! So excited for you! secretly I’m rooting for you, because I have the same goal for except in Boston….You are my inspiration and motivation to aim for such a goal!
My thoughts in the race usually revolve around elaborate ways of how to drop out with out feeling like a failure, (I am still learning how to not go out too fast and end up running by the grace of God at the end)…still learning.

Reply

Good Luck on Sunday!!!!

Reply

So much good luck this weekend! Have a blast and those goals are going to write themselves :) can’t wait to read all about it!

I usually think about my parents. Neither are runners, but my mom is so adorable about races (wait, so you just ran HOW far?) and my dad, though quiet, is pretty proud. He has a neurodegenerative disease that limits his movement, so on some level, I run for him, too.

About to head out for an 8 mile run with my runbuds then making gingerbread houses with my best friend and her daughter! Happy Saturday!

Awww congrats on your anniversary!
