Tempo Tuesday (it is sad how happy alliterations make me).

Don’t we look like quite the party animals?

The stars aligned perfectly and we were all able to run at the same time this morning and everyone was game for some tempoing (not a word but it sounds cool).

IMG 4982

The weather was in the 40s!  Magical.

I took this picture below because a bald eagle flew right by us during our warm-up.  It was so beautiful but I clearly didn’t whip out the camera fast enough.

IMG 4979

And during the warm-up I made sure to take a very artistic running shot.

IMG 4977

We did a 3 mile warm-up and then started our 5 mile tempo.  The most amazing part about those 5 miles were that we didn’t have to stop for a light/car the entire time.  Once I stop it is really hard to get my legs moving again.  I just want to get it done with zero breaks.  A 2 mile cool-down for a total of 10 miles.  I really love tempos because you are working hard but at a pace that is doable for you (unlike how I feel during track workouts;)

I must have knocked on wood after writing my review for the 620 because it stopped working?!?!?!  Back to the 305 until I get it replaced.  Good thing I still adore my Forerunner 305… we have been through a lot together..

IMG 4991

Happy with how the splits went down.  I tend to fly and die because I feel great in the beginning but I held myself back even though the girls were ahead of me.  I knew I wanted to finish feeling strong and avoid positive splits (second 1/2 being slower than the first 1/2).

Screen Shot 2015 02 03 at 2 03 10 PM

I got back to my mom’s and Brooke was doing her own tempo.

IMG 5005

I was hot during my run but I am always FREEZING after a run until I take a shower.  That meant a large coat and penguin blanket were necessary until we went back to our house.

Other people enjoy hanging out at their parents’ house all of the time too right?!

IMG 5013

Time to start making something for dinner.  My bro, his wife and their kiddos are in town from Arizona and we are going to live it up tonight at my house.

We see a lot of deer in TN.
My husband is out of town, so I’m making a big bowl of guacamole for dinner!

Rest day today! And I’m feeling oddly achy in my joints? I probably should workout and make my body feel normal! It’s the best when you can get thru a run without stopping! If I have to stop I just want to be done. It throws off my whole run!

It looks like you had a great time Janae. Boo for your Garmin stopping working but glad you have a back up. I still use my 10 LOL.

I traveled home today and recovered from yesterday’s 20 miler. What an interesting traveling day it was too LOL.

Tempo runs are my favorite! Right now since I’m base building I switch between a tempo one week and a fartlek workout the next. Today’s run was a fartlek workout of 8 miles with 4 x 5 min @ 5K pace. It felt great and the pace didn’t feel too challenging! The only downside was that it was inside on the treadmill because there’s at least 20 inches of snow outside.
I only ever see dogs and squirrels on my runs. I once was convinced I saw a snake and practically jumped off the sidewalk. Turns out it was a lanyard.

Reply

GREAT workout today Laura! That is awesome! Stay warm and drink lots of hot chocolate today. I am very glad it wasn’t a snake!

Last cycle I encountered many deer… I know they are harmless Per de but they scared the you know what out of me… I’ve also encountered a skunk( I managed to get away sent free) and a porcupine… Damn wilderness;)

I was itching to run SO bad today because the was was shining, but I have a basketball game in a few hours so I want to save my legs! Currently eating a green smoothie and pb banana toast.. my go to game day meal always!

I see deer when I run! Where I live the deer as super plentiful especially if I go out of the town limits. I’ve seen a few foxes too!

Reply

Today was 6 x 880s at 10K pace….one word: woof. BUT it felt better than 2 weeks ago so one more word: YAY!

Have an amazing night with the fam! Family time is the best time!

I am staying off my feet this week while I get some super snazzy tendon work done – low level laser therapy. Let me just say laser therapy —> AMAZING! After one treatment my tendonitis and plantar faschiitis went from bugging me constantly to not even registering on my “notice it” list.

When I run I see mostly deer and crazy chihuahuas trying to eat my ankles. My favorite running days are when I see a beautiful hawk eyeing me from the telephone lines, though.

About to do my workout now! Practicing BODYFLOW in my basement :) No idea what is dinner. I want take out!

Reply

What a great shot during your run! I’m very jealous of 40’s weather. It’s in the single digits here with snow and ice everywhere. Such is winter! Did yoga this morning, no run.

Reply

I had spaghetti with homemade sauce (from my freezer) tonight! It was so delicious :) And nice job on those perfect negative splits!

Reply

7 miles of hills. The first 2 miles were about a 2, then my legs warmed up and the rest of the run felt great. I live in So Cal, so outside of course!

I’ve seen coyote, deer, rabbits, squirrels, bobcats and an occasional bear print (I’ve never actually seen a bear, but my friend has!)

Reply

I have digestion problems, so exercise I have to time when i can do; when do you usually do your runs, first thing in the morning after a short snack, right? Mornings are rough for me for anything intense like tempo runs!

Reply

I always encounter Javelinas in Arizona. They’re wild pig/hogs and really mean. Once I almost ran smack into a pack of them. Scariest moment of my life!

Reply

I did a 3 mile walk/run on my treadmill this morning. It was fun! You and your friends are SOOO speedy!!! Amazing. Great workout!

Reply

I always freeze after runs too. Something about that sweat drying on my skin just makes me freeze, I only regain my ability to regulate my temperature after showering.

Reply

It’s been less than 10 degrees F here, so inside for sure. Outside is, thankfully, just a brief necessity to get from one inside to a different inside.

Reply

How did your workout feel today on a scale from 1-10?! 6, good for the most part by my calves were achy, usually that means too many miles on the shoes. The best part was that it was done by 6am :)

Was your workout Inside or outside today? Outside at 5am – it was 34degrees. Perfect weather for an early February run in Utah

What animals do you get to see while you are out running (besides dogs/cats)? Has anyone seen a mountain lion or moose while running (I am terrified of both)? I almost always see at least 1-2 deer on every run (or hear them since it’s dark) Sometimes I see rabbits. Once when I was training for Wasatch Back Ragnar I went to run Guardsman Pass – alone. That day I came upon a mama moose with a baby, that was a little sketchy. And I swear the same day I saw a mountain lion going into the brush, but I’m not 100% sure.

What are you having for dinner tonight? Chicken Tacos

My workout today was a HIIT/leg & butt class (inside). It was a great workout. It is always a great class and the instructor is super motivating! I was especially thrilled with my sprint intervals. I really pushed it today and still felt great. I’m always a little nervous about going too fast during intervals on a treadmill in a class…I’m afraid I’m gonna fall in front of everyone! ;)

I have roast and carrots in the slow cooker. It smells amazing!! And I’m making some mashed potatoes not to go with it. I can’t wait to eat!

Reply

Not “not”. The potatoes ARE to go with it!

Reply

Dang girl. Speeeeedy. I am so happy your workout was a good one. I am always cold until I shower too. You would think that would motivate me to shower sooner :/

I did cardio/hiit and abs at RAGE this morning. So it was inside. Your run and your pictures seriously look amazing. Makes me want to go for run outside right now.

On my run in Mesquite the other week I saw jack rabbits. I usually only see deer around my house.

Roasted broccoli, sweet potatoes and rotisserie chicken tonight for dinner. #solazy

Reply

My workout was in the warmth of my basement: elliptical, kindle, and Kelly and Michael. Couldn’t have asked for more. haha!

I had a roasted vegetable wrap with cashew spread of dinner. SO good! With a side of brownies with pb cups and peanuts, of course ;)

Reply

My workout today was 8 miles, on the treadmill, at my new pace 7:50. All of my 7+ miles runs seem to be at the pace. Anything under 8 makes me happy.

I see a lot of deer on my runs, along with squirrels and bunnies. Once I even freed a robin that was tangled up in string. Poor thing was terrified!

Dinner tonight is a new crockpot bbq chicken recipe with Mexican quinoa (another newish recipe) and mango. Yum!

And congratulations to your family on the new baby! How wonderful!

I need to come live near you and be friends with you all. It looks like so much fun!

The cost of living here is pretty cheap:) Come on over and run with us!

Hmm my workout was probably about a 7 today. It was inside and I took a Tabata Tuesday class after I finished shadowing it in the morning.

When I lived in VA I would run on a trail so I was always seeing deer, rabbits, a fox, and birds. Good times.

Reply

I see deer occasionally, and sometimes coyote and once a squirrel feel on my head, seriously. However every single day that I run and I am NOT exaggerating when I say every time I run, I see peacocks, emu’s, armadillo’s and alligators. The only ones that scare me are the gators and only when they’re coming towards me which happens more than you would think. Sigh, Florida Problems.

Reply

I meant fell. Spelling is obviously a challenge for me.

Reply

My workout was inside as the snow nightmare is ongoing here in Boston. I really hate running on the treadmill but I am trying to focus on the positive things about it, like how easy it is to do a progression run (or other run that involves specific paces) and how I can run comfortably a lot faster on the treadmill than other environments so it lets my body learn what it feels like to consistently hold a faster pace which I’m hoping will benefit my running off the treadmill, too!

Reply

Well I didn’t do any real exercise today. I fell off a snowmobile on Sunday after losing control on a turn and I think I sprained my shoulder. Ouchie.
But tonight I met my boyfriend after work at Virgil’s BBQ in Times Square. I actually lost our bet and dinner was my payout. The bet was who would run more miles in 2014. With all my injuries I missed a lot of running. So I lost. But eating pulled pork and hush puppies with maple butter and seeing the boy are really not such a bad way to lose :)

Reply

I slept in this morning (struggle town atm!), but I’m determined to do a workout dvd tonight to make up for it.

I haven’t seen too many interesting animals while running, but I did see a fox on the way to the gym one morning. That was unusual considering I live in a capital city!

Reply

I did a hill workout outside and it was glorious! In New Zealand when I run I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been chased by goats and had to climb a tree to escape! I wish I was joking but I am 100% serious! those beasties are aggressive haha

Just finished an easy 4.5 with the running group. It’s so good to have people to pace off of so I don’t, in your words, fly and die. Love reading your blog with the homemade enchiladas. Yum! Glad the kiddos left some for me.

Hanging out at my parents house is the #1 place in the world I would choose to be on any given day. The whole world is ok when I’m there :)

My run was on the treadmill today but it was ok because I wanted to do half mile repeats….I stole your workout 100%… thanks haha!

Reply

I didn’t do a workout today. I’m still recovering from a half marathon 2 weeks ago, and a 5k I did on Saturday. I was however on my feet all day and did a total of about 8,000 steps while there. :) Daily goal is 10,000. :)

We’re having Italian Crockpot Chicken, with brown rice and peas. :)

I love that penguin blanket!

Today was an indoor workout – 3 easy miles on the treadmill. I’m heading to the track for my first speed workout of the year tomorrow!

I had leftover spaghetti for dinner (and will have it again for lunch tomorrow). I need to get better at cooking for 2. I tend to cook for 100 people…

I swear we are the same! I hate breaks during tempos! I get freeeezing after my run–> even though I am hot during it!

I saw a bunny once. About 6 am. I didn’t approach it though, I saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

You guys are all so fast! How did you find people that run your same pace?

One of my favorite places to go for a walk in a park that runs along the river on the edge of the city. Lots of animals follow the river into the city. I’ve seen deer and even a couple coyotes there.

Had to stop for a skunk to cross the road last week! Glad we stopped and he kept going!

How did your workout feel today on a scale from 1-10?!
I’d say it was a 6. I ran around an inside track for 5 miles…I’m SO JEALOUS that you are still running outside. I live in New England and it’s super snowy and crappy here. I try to do at least one or two outdoor runs a week but have been on the treadmill more than I’d like.

What animals do you get to see while you are out running (besides dogs/cats)? Has anyone seen a mountain lion or moose while running (I am terrified of both)?
City girl here, so no animals except for birds, dogs and cats. I’d freak out if I saw any wildlife!

What are you having for dinner tonight?
Boring “dinner”: dunkin donuts turkey sausage flatbread

Reply

I was sick today…I went to bed last night feeling “off”~ woke up this morning at 6 and just knew I was still “off”…after calling in sick to work I went back to bed by 7:30 and slept until NOON!! Yikes!! Guess I needed that!!

It was a slow moving afternoon but by 4 I felt back to normal. Whew! Glad it was short lived….my supper? Chicken, sweet potatoes and 3 bowls of ice cream. (so sad I know)

Reply

Sounds like a great run! The weather has been amazing. I did 1200 and 800 m intervals outside this morning, and they felt hard.

I have seen moose running in Millcreek Canyon, and also elk in some of the canyons around Salt Lake. I’ve also seen a bobcat. I’m always terrified that I’ll run into a mountain lion when I’m out really early…

Reply

Ah family visiting is so much fun!!

Reply

I am terrified of seeing wild animals while I run. There is one trail that I run on where I won’t go without my dog because it scares me so bad.

Reply

I saw a moose during big cottonwood last year! I also almost got hit by a deer once while running!
Tonight I ran outside for the first time since October and have found myself again. I love running outside!

Reply

I see moose on my runs all the time! My running parter and I were even chased by one in the wee hours of the morning towards the end of a long run. Try sprinting from a moose when you’re already 16 miles in! Eek!
I’ve also run across foxes, lots of eagles, a wolverine carcass, and a huge (400+lb) black bear in the middle of my suburban neighborhood. We always have to be on our toes here!

Reply

That is my worst nightmare… I can’t even imagine Kate. I am so glad that you guys were okay. You must be fast! AHHHH and a black bear. WOW!

Reply

Luckily moose are really forgetful and have pretty poor eyesight, so you just have to outrun them to the nearest bush or tree- once you hide behind it, they forget that you’re there and they just keep trotting along.
I don’t mind running across wildlife normally- it keeps the run interesting!-but wildlife and the winter darkness combined = me and my treadmill about five months a year!

Reply

A few months ago I was running with my group and there was an armadillo on the side of the path. No biggie… But I think we spooked it because it started running towards us on the path and I almost tripped over it. I screamed like my two year old haha. NW Houston for you

Reply

Here in England, they set up their towns to be “pedestrian encouraging”. This means that I can go for entire weeks at a time without using my car. So my workouts are usually strength training inside, with a whole lotta walking outside. I have a dog that loves being outside, so… lots of walks. Also– what slippers does your mom wear? Those look AMAZINGLY comfortable, so I’m guessing Crocs or something like that? Let us know– I want some!!

Reply

I had my first treadmill session after 6 month running outdoor and it was super hard mentally! But good training to get the mind stronger I suppose

Reply

You seriously ran 5 miles in 33 minutes sandwiched between a 10 mile total?!?! Okay, you win. And, I attempted that 7 mile progressive run that you did the other day and I couldn’t get my last mile in at a 7 min/mile pace (on the treadmill) so I hung onto 7:15 for the last 2 miles and I seriously just about choked to death on my own vomit. I have endurance legs. Speedy legs? I do not.

Reply

My friend was chased by a mountain lion towards the end of her hike once. Luckily, she was close by her car and was able to get in it fast enough but she said it was the scariest thing ever because it was making all of these noises! We don’t have too many random animals in Orlando, every once in a while you will hear of a wild bear in the city. Now, that would be terrifying to me! I hope I never encounter one!

Reply

Gotta love the tempo runs…and with friends!? You’re one lucky girl.
Also wanted to give you a huge THANKS for the Blue Apron discount code you offered a few weeks back. I took advantage of it, my first box arrived yesterday and I had the most amazeballs dinner last night!!! OMG. I’m in love. :-)

Hi from the UK. Love reading your blog

I ran my first marathon in Alaska back in 2003, and there was a moose in the middle of the course!! Before the race we were warned to stop if we saw a moose because they like to chase. One (stupid) guy tried to run past and the moose started to run at him. It was so scary but also really cool to see it! :)

Reply

I worked out inside today, just some yoga and barre. I always hang out at my in-laws house, probably too much. We used to live a block away and I often walked over there just for some face to face contact with the outside world. Being a stay at home mom, I often find my sanity when I am around others or hitting the pavement. That run looks like so much fun! What a great workout! Have a great Wednesday!

How did your workout feel today on a scale from 1-10?!
Well, yesterday my workout felt really good! It was a run, 3+ish miles, and it felt fast for me, not nearly the pace that you are doing.

Was your workout Inside or outside today?
Outside! It was beautiful and sunny outside.

What animals do you get to see while you are out running (besides dogs/cats)? Has anyone seen a mountain lion or moose while running (I am terrified of both)?
I’ve never seen a mountain lion or mood while running. I think I saw some cows yesterday while running.

What are you having for dinner tonight?
Hmm.. Good question. I think I’ll have to look and see what we have. :D

Reply

Looks like you’ll be having a great time with your visitors!

Reply

I see rabbits and foxes on a regular basis. Every once in a while I see a coyote (not cool!) and this morning, I saw an owl. He was beautiful. I would not be okay with a mountain lion, maybe a moose but not a mountain lion.

Reply

I’ve never seen a mountain lion (we call them cougars here) on my run, but they are known to live in the mountains a few blocks away from my house. Cougars and bears too. They are the reason why I don’t do trail runs on my own in my neighbourhood! I am terrified of triggering a hunting instinct!

Reply

You are so speedy! Also I am super jealous of your scenery. Time to sign up for a race in Utah haha. My workout yesterday was a 7, maybe an 8. I did a 3 mile semi progressive run which was awesome and made me feel great, but my shins were still sore from my long run this past weekend, and my new shoes felt kinda funky. Did you know you’re supposed to wear a size/half size bigger?! Because I sure didn’t. But now it makes sense why my old pair of shoes felt so tight. After my run, I had an awesome workout with my trainer as well – getting stronger every day ;)

My weekday work outs are at the gym because cold and dark after work, but weekend runs are outside! The only animals I see are ducks because I run around a huge lake by my house. There are also GIANT swans which are aggressive some times haha.

Dinner last night was stuffed bell peppers, courtesy of my wonderful boyfriend. Love a man that can cook ;)

Reply

I see horses and cows pretty much every time I run outside:-) I’ve also seen deer, rabbits, and turtles. I’ve seen moose while driving and hiking but never while running- they’re ridiculously big but generally take absolutely no notice of you.

Reply

LOL – tempo is always Tuesday for me…and I too get a kick out of saying Tempo Tuesday! Your splits were GREAT!!!

In the summer I have to contend with Canadian Geese on the path. Trust me. They are vile and vicious creatures. I have had to turn around and run back the way I came one because they wouldn’t move from the path and just snapped at me menacingly!!

Reply

My workout yesterday was teaching BODYPUMP in the group fitness room!

Reply

Your splits were amazing! Do you often hear “I want to be a runner like you?” Because I do! I did a 3 mile tempo run today and it felt great! One of these days my speed workouts are going to pay off and BOOM I’ll be fast :)

Reply

At a charity run last year I almost literally stumbled over a LIVE armadillo! I only see them as roadkill, but this one was just strolling along like there wasn’t hundreds of people swarming and stampeding down the trail!?

Reply

My workouts are all inside right now – all the ice outside is not my friend.

I see a lot of deer and chipmunks when I run

Dinner tonight is pork chops, broccoli and potatoes

Reply

Mine was inside! I did a spin class that kicked my booty!!!

Reply

They are really good split times.. Yes I got attacked by a buzzard, which I can only describe as a small version of an eagle found in the UK and Ireland. It actually took the hat off my head. Thankfully we don’t have lions here.
