Last Day in California and Boston Training Week #4

Week #4 of marathon training was a good one especially because 16 of the miles were filled with sunshine.

IMG 4497

Monday:  8 miles @ 8:15 pace.  On the treadmill but switched up the inclines to have some hills.  Post-Run Power Exercises… killer!

Tuesday:   10 miles total.  Outside:)  Warm-up and then 4 mile repeats—>  6:26, 6:21, 6:20 & 6:18 with .25 mile jogging recoveries in between each repeat.  Cool-down.

Wednesday:  7 @ 8:34 pace on the treadmill.

Thursday:  6.5 @ 7:42 average pace on the treadmill and then I taught a spin class.

Friday:  OFF!  Flew to California early in the morning and so I took the day off.

Saturday:  16 miles with plenty of rolling hills thrown in there.  7:56 average pace.  It was a hard run for me but the weather could not have been any better.

Sunday:  OFF!

47.5 miles total.

Yesterday was my last day in California and we spent our time before picking up Brooke eating and walking around Downtown Willow Glen.

Crepevine did not disappoint in terms of salads.  Receiving my own salad that could technically feed 3 people makes me happy.

And then we had a brownies a la mode cheers before eating it at a table outside.

IMG 4522

Picked up a very tired (but extra snuggly) little girl and hit the airport.  And just like that, everything feels right again.

IMG 4549

Honey pretzel sticks for part of our airport grub.

And I loved this quote that I saw in my mom’s Reader’s Digest on the flight.

PS Mindy (from the Mindy Project—>  the show that makes me laugh harder than any other show) is in Utah so I guess you know who I am going to be trying to find today.

PPS don’t forget to mark your calendars.  Just one more week until FREE froyo and toppings at Yogurtand!

Best run was my half yesterday! Felt great and didn’t “race” it so it left room for actual enjoyment! Who knew that was possible anymore :) Glad you have Brooke with you again, best feeling to have your child in your arms.

Reply

I will definitely be celebrating froyo day!!
I was finally able to to have a pain free long run!!!
I worked in the music business, so I’ve met all of the country artists:)

Reply

I had a few good runs mid-week. Hardest was my long run, just couldn’t get into it mentally.

Highlight of my weekend was having a dinner party with some friends, one that I hadn’t seen in a long time!

I’ve met famous running people, but no actors. I would love to meet Mindy, she’s hilarious!

Reply

Best run and highlight of my weekend both occurred yesterday when I PR’d at the Miami half marathon! It was such a perfect day! It took me over 3.5 hours to finish my first half marathon in Nov. 2013 and yesterday I finally broke the 3 hour mark and finished in 2:57! Moving on up! haha

I WANT TO MEET MINDY. Please go find her and share a million pics on the blog! Love her so much!

Reply

Have you read Mindy’s book “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” Because if not you need to!! It’s hilarious. Actually, download it on Audible because it’s so much better when she is the one reading it to you :)

Reply

I second that. I saw a woman reading it on a plane, and I read a page over her shoulder… I bought it as soon as we landed. :D

Reply

Best run was my 9 mile run on Thursday–I was extremely consistent, every split was between 7:45 and 7:53–> and I didn’t even feel like I was working that hard

Worst run was Saturday’s 75 minute trail run. Legs were burntout from Thursday and Friday.

Reply

Best run was my long run with my dog. That was 12 miles (it’s a down week for me for Boston Training).

Hardest run was my mile repeats. I also did 4, but not nearly as fast as you. They were 6:58, 6:50, 6:42, 6:35.

Reply

My best run was the day I ran Yasso 800’s even though at the time, I hated them.

Highlight of the weekend was hanging out with my family, as always. :)

No celebrity sightings but I did see an elusive snapping turtle on the shore of my pond. Counts right?

Reply

Did an 18 miler this weekend that felt surprisingly good. Long runs = good for the soul.

I met SHAQ once and the first thing I thought to say was, “I saw your house on MTV Cribs once” …..so awkward.

Reply

The highlight of my weekend was the Yoga for Runners class I did yesterday – it was PACKED and everyone had hideous feet and horrible flexibility, it was lovely. We focused on hamstrings, hips, and calves – it really was perfect for runners.

Best run was a 3 miler I did the day after a five miler with no knee pain. Worst run was the 8 miler 2 days later. Knee gave out before I even made it to 6 miles. This runners knee is so finicky. Grrr.

Reply

You have no idea how much I needed that quote. I’ve been feeling so depressed with my injury and now finding out hormone issues are the cause and they don’t know why. I can’t eat, sleep or concentrate at work. Not to mention a zillion other Higgs have gone wrong. I feel so overwhelmed. I hope this is the bottom and it gets better from here.

Reply

The highlight of my weekend was going to look at houses! We are buying a home for the first time so it’s been exciting! I haven’t met any famous people but I’ve seen a couple when I was visiting LA.

Reply

The highlight (and lowlight haha) of my weekend was packing up my apartment. I hate packing but am so excited that Friday is moving day!

I read Mindy’s book last week and on Friday starting binge watching the first season of the Mindy Project. I finished season 1 last night. I contemplated calling in sick today to keep watching. It is SO funny.

Reply

16 miles of sunshine looks beautiful! I was blessed with a great sunny (warmish) run yesterday of 7 miles!

Reply

My best run was a 10 mile long run that I got to do outside! I love runs where the pace and distance just feel so great. Hardest run was a 7 mile run with 10 x 1 min hard fartlek like you’ve posted.
Highlight of my weekend was getting to spend time with one of my best friends before she moves.

Reply

I love your sweater in that photo with the salad! Haha!

You are inspirational. I’m just training for my first half-marathon and EEK I can’t imagine having the energy to run as much as you do!

Reply

Highlight of my weekend was my 10 mile run! I don’t quite log the miles you do, so 10 was a big deal to me :)
My mom used to babysit the guitarist from One Republic and his family are friends of my grandparents. So I guess you could say I’m a big deal… ;P

Reply

My best run was last Friday..I wanted to move my longer run in case of snow/ice on Saturday. I ended up feeling really good and making it into a progression run. Worst run was probably last Monday because it ended up being icy and had to cut my run short!

Reply

This week is my peak training week for my ultra relay. I’ll run 9.3 miles this morning, 9.4 miles tonight and then 8.2 miles early tomorrow morning. As you can tell I didn’t jump out of bed and get going, I’m procrastinating a bit.
Do you have a hard time running almost every day? I run at the max 4 times a week and that’s perfect for getting it done and not dying at the race. Of course I’m older and slower and not going for any speed records. I’m just trying to stay on my feet end run without injury.

Reply

There’s been so many new yogurt places recently. here in Toronto we have one called given fruz and menchies )

Reply

I met John Glenn when I was 12 or so. He was at the Air & Space museum when my family and I were visiting. That was pretty cool.

highlight of my weekend was making a Chocolate Covered Oreo cake and sharing it with our friends on Saturday.

Reply

The highlight of my weekend was seeing American Sniper. Oh my goodness… it was AMAZING!! It is gonna stay with me for a while.

Reply

My dear friend! Great training week Janae!! Your mile splits are so speedy. You’re going to do so well in Boston!! Keep it up. :) I enjoy keeping up with you every morning before I start my day. Your positive spirit is always uplifting. Your baby girl is getting so big! She really is precious. :)

Hardest run for me was my long run on the tm. It took some mental discipline to run double digits on that thing! ;) Highlight of the weekend was spending quality outdoor time with my family. We had a little summer tease this weekend in SoCal so, we took full advantage of it. :) Celebrites: I’ve met Holly Madison from “girls next door” walking through Planet Hollywood. I’ve also seen Heidi Klum when she was married to Seal at the entrance of Disneyland many years ago! :) I’m saving the date for Froyo on 2/2! I’m hooked on the Salted caramel pecan flavor! It pairs well with caramel bits & the speculous cookie. :) Have a great Monday and week my friend. p.s. – love J.K. Rowlings quote. so true!! Proud of you. :) xo

Reply

I think my best run last week was Saturday’s 11 mile treadmill run although I had some good ones outdoors earlier in the week…I don’t even know the next time I will run outside with this blizzard looming! Ugh.

Reply

Nice week of workouts! Strong runs and great long run! Excited for you and Boston! xo

Reply

Best run last week was probably my treadmill run because I was in a hurry so it made me go fast :) Worst run was intervals with the hubs because he just isn’t feeling it right now and I have to slow down a bit – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for me.

Highlight of the weekend was finally having a healthy kid after a very long icky week.

I have met Donald Faison (Scrubs) and Ethan Hawke, both at airports. And I’ve seen a handful of famous people the year we had Disneyland season passes and went 32 times in a single year… :)

Reply

My long run was my best run because it was the longest I have gone since my November marathon and it felt good. I added speed though this week and that was ROUGH :)

Reply

I’m going to cross my fingers that you DO find MIndy today, because that would be too awesome!

The only famous person I’ve met was Jerry Springer, and that’s just because he was taking a quick swim in our hotel pool in Las Vegas. Super weird, but pretty funny!

Also, your eyelashes are insane! So pretty!

Reply

Did you know we don’t have froyo in Canada? I mean, I guess we have frozen yogurt at the grocery store, but it’s not a thing like it is down there. It’s quite sad. We have gelato and ice cream shops, but no “froyo.” Boo.

Reply

That is seriously so sad to me. Come visit Utah asap!

Reply

I live in Canada and we have lots of frozen yogurt shops in my city. Where do you live?

Reply

Hi Corry! We live in Abbotsford, a suburb approximately an hour east of Vancouver.

Reply

That’s crazy that you don’t have froyo there or Vancouver!! I live in regina, its much smaller than the area you’re from.

Reply

highlight of my weekend was hanging out with friends and going shopping with my mom at costco! ALSO not sure if you’ve already heard but go to chipotle today and get sofritas and you can get a free burrito anytime in the next month!! your free froyo picture reminded me of it ;) http://chipotle.com/en-US/html/sofritasmonday.aspx

Reply

Best run was my 9.25 miles in mesquite. Not as warm as your run, but definitely warmer than here and the lower elevation made it very nice.

Hope your flight home was good and you got even more snuggle time in. What time am I picking you up today so we can hunt down Mindy Kaling? #RestrainingOrderHereWeCome #WorthIt #Yolo

Reply

My hardest run was on Sunday, I was supposed to run 15 and I threw in the towel at 8, they all can’t be winner’s…

Reply

Best run – my treadmill progressive run, 15 sec per mile Faster than last week (7:45 for 7)
Longest run – 16 miles. Phoenix marathon in 5 weeks. Slow, steady, windy and with good friends.
Highlight- getting over a tummy bug and being able to run 16 miles

Reply

WAY to go on getting faster this week on your progressive run. I am stoked for you to do Phoenix. Please let me know how it goes!

Reply

My best run was my 6-mile speed workout! It felt awesome, which is unusual because normally I want to die during speed workouts. So ironically, my hardest workout was an easy 3-miler because it was too slow of a pace for me. I really wanted to run faster!! My favorite part of my weekend as designing my #40DaysofFit challenge that I’m hosting on Facebook! We’re working on spiritual, physical, mental and emotional fitness! It’s going to be AMAZING!

Reply

I had a mentally tough 8 miler yesterday. Just couldn’t get my brain into it. I had a great 6 miles earlier in the week though! I once walked past Christina Ricci and couldn’t bring myself to say hello, which now I deeply regret. I love her! I met Jennifer Garner while she was filming Alias. She was incredibly nice.

Reply

Yumm. I had ice cream this weekend. My hardest run was my one miler :/ only mile, but I can feel the improvement. Besides that my weekend was good. Highlight hanging out with my daughter

Reply

Warm running weather- jealous!

Reply

My best and hardest run were the same run – hill repeats and LOTS of hard climbing. It was so rewarding and I felt awesome when I had completed the run.

The highlight of my week was going on a hike with my husband in this incredible sunshine!! What is up with this gorgeous weather in the west? Loving it!

I have met Joe Montana and had a great conversation about football. This girl can talk football for days. ☺

Reply

Some of my favorites celebrities I’ve met – Kelly Clarkson, Kristin Chenoweth, and a good portion of the General Hospital cast! :)

Reply

My best run/favorite part of my weekend was my long run on Saturday! 14 miles avg 7:42 on a super hilly route! Definitely the best long run I’ve ever had. Definitely not as nice weather as you had though!!

Reply

Oh my you must find Mindy.

Reply

Best run was my 22miler Saturday, topping my week off with 60mi! I haven’t done that in years! Felt great.

So glad you’re back with Brooke. Have a great week!

Reply

Oh man I’m so jealous! No treadmill at home and tons of snow means my training has come to a screeching halt. :(

Reply

I don’t know if there are an Yogurtlands around me, but I guess I better get to checking! So glad you have your Brooke back with you!! :)

Reply

I only did two runs this past week. I am still recovering from my half marathon that I did a week ago. I am looking forward to start training again this week. Glad you had a great trip in California!

Reply

So jealous cause you’ve got all that sunshine….

New job!! That’s the highlight!!

Reply

That quote by J K Rowling is awesome. I saw an interview she did once where she went back to her old apartment where she was living when she wrote the first Harry Potter book. I remember her saying that she never would have thought she’d be where she is right now when she was living there.

The highlight of my weekend was being able to spend a couple hours over lunch with some friends I haven’t seen in a couple months. It’s always so great to reconnect and catch up on what we’ve all been doing.

Reply

My highlight was going to a bootcamp class at the local rec center!! It definitely was worth the pain that I feel now!!

Plus I went to swig and got a strawberry DP! So so good!!

Reply

I think the highlight of my weekend was not doing much of anything and being able to read for hours. That or the gelato and espresso I got here at Eataly. So good.

I was about 5 feet away from Denzel Washington once, but I didn’t actually meet him. I just took my time staring at him like a weirdo.

Reply

My best run last week was my long run – 11 miles, feeling great. My worst run was probably my speedwork, it was a tough one.

I haven’t met any famous people, but the boyfriend works in tv and has met all kinds of people. The only one I can think of right now is Angelina Jolie.

Reply

Taylor Swift is probably my favourite person I’ve met (besides Brian from the Backstreet Boys but that’s probably just my 15 year old self talking…haha!) She was adorable, sweet and down to earth! She called me beautiful! It was pretty darn cool. I got to hang out with her on her tour bus and listen to her play. I will never forget it!

My last week of training wasn’t the greatest. I got sick with some cold/flu bug and had to miss my long run. I was able to still log a decent amount of miles. Now that I’m (almost) feeling back to normal I am excited to get back on track!

Reply

I would looooooove to meet Mindy, I love her too!!

Reply

Last week was a pretty low mileage week for me. But the best run? It’s a tie. I did really well on my 2 mile run test (16:48–fast for me) and had the most fun running the Nashville Zoo Run Run–definitely the highlight of the weekend!

The most famous person I have met was President Obama. While deployed, we hosted an event for him to speak to the troops (with country singer Brad Paisley–who is actually shorter than I expected). After he performed his speech, I was able to actually meet the president. It was pretty exciting overall.

Reply

Best part of weekend–double workout in one day.

And I met Zach Braff once–he was very chill.

Reply

Your Boston training inspires me! I only wish I was as caught up as you… and that I had a bit of that Cali weather :) Happy training!!

Reply

The highlight of my weekend was getting my very first massage!!! It was amazing and the massage therapist came to my house!!! :) I am trying to think, but I don’t think I have ever met a famous person ha. I’m lame!

Reply

When I was younger, I shared an elevator with ‘Uncle Phil’ from Fresh Prince of Bel Air in Florida. Most recently, when I was in NYC a few summers ago, I saw Ben Afflect in a shopping mall outside of Central Park, Tony Kanal from No Doubt and Nate Berkus the designer were shopping in SOHO and Melanie Moore, who won SYTYCD once season was walking through Time Square. I’m OBNOXIOUSLY observant, if I weren’t, I probably would have never noticed any of these people….I also read way to much celebrity gossip news.

Reply

I spot actors in NYC but the person who I chatted extensively with was Mary Higgins Clark. We were at the same event and she was very gracious, charming and down to earth.

My long run was pretty good. It felt hard but my time was better than I thought it would be.

Highlight was Bingo for a Cure on Friday. I won the Brandy Basket and it’s quite a large bottle…

Reply

Can ONE run be the best/worst together? I only ran once and the crossfit instructor made it a sprint (I never sprint) and I literally almost started crying/wheezing. Not my best moment.

Highlight of my weekend: Trying my first PureBarre class!

I have met Big Black (from Rob & Big on Mtv)
Vinny from Mtv’s Jersey Shore (even shook his hand)
Big Rig from VH1’s Daisy of Love show

I think that may be it on the celebrity front. Obviously…I watch a lot of reality television. :)

Reply

I am in a taper mode right now — will start 1/2 marathon training in April (resting my IT band now) — so I only do 3 or 4 miles every time I run…4x a week.

My weekend highlight was just the break in the weather before we got more snow last night….my husband and I were able to get out and take our dogs on a nice long walk.

Two years ago in NYC Jessica Alba was staying at the same hotel I was — I got several pictures, but felt too shy to approach her, plus she was with her husband and children. I got several pics though and she walked right in front of me — I could have reached out and touched her. THE best part was later that same day there were photos of her on the internet that the paparazzi took and I was in one of them……THAT was exciting.

Reply

Brooke looks so glad to be back with her Mama!!!
Best run was a trail run in a new city between swim events. Highlight (besides all things kid and coffee related) was taking the ice-bike out for a ride in some fresh snow. Gotta love spiked tires!
We don’t have frozen yogurt in Germany year ’round. The eis cafe’s have a yogurt eis that is good, though. However, right now most eis cafe’s are creperies so ice cream is pretty much only available at McCafe’s or by the carton at the market. I love visiting the states and getting froyo with ToPpInGs!!!! (that was very childish to write that)
Famous people-mostly runners/athletes and authors (and authors of cookbooks which is very exciting to me. Very)

Reply

My best and hardest run was the same one. I ran a 5k yesterday that was underground, but I didn’t expect it to be so hot! I was way overdressed, so it was challenging, but it ended up being a great race for me.

Reply

My best run this week was a 7.2 mile run which was my PR since I started logging mileage… I ran a total of 21 miles for the week… Can’t wait to see what I do this week.. the goal is to beat last week’s mileage of 21 ( even if it’s 21.5 i’ll be proud.lol)

Reply

Hi Janae!!! You MUST listen to “Is everybody hanging out without me?” On audiobook by Mindy. It is absolutely amazing and would be perfect for your runs!! You will love it!

Reply

Hardest run was my first speed workout from this training session. 1 mile w/u and 12 repeats of 400 meters at high speed with 400 meters of recovery after each interval and then 1 mile c/d for 8 miles total. I’m stoked that I did it without bailing!

Reply

our froyo place closed :(

Reply

I’m so excited for free froyo day! I even have it marked down on my calendar! I had some last night to prepare for the big day! :)
