This outfit can be called: ‘I haven’t done laundry in weeks so I wore my last clean running clothes and didn’t care that I was wearing 12 different colors all at once.”
Gym treadmill today for a few reasons..
-It was freezing and windy and I have turned into a weather snob again.
-I didn’t have anyone to run with and I knew my sister would be at the gym on the elliptical and just being in the same building as her makes my soul happy (we kept waving at each other, it was cute).
-I really needed a recovery day and the treadmill is good for me because I can set it at a recovery pace and not be tempted to go faster than I should go like I am when I am outside.
7 miles in an hour and then a few pushups and planks to pretend like I am still trying to keep up with my strength training.
———————————–
Brooke loves jumping. All day long. She now has her own personal little trampoline at home and she is in heaven.
The weekly Target trip (obviously we went to the bank before judging by the suckers… I remember I was always beyond happy whenever my mom told me she needed to go to the bank because that meant a sucker sugar high).
I have been craving Subway for the last few weeks (ever since I was in Thailand?!) and I finally fulfilled the need.
A few things I have been doing lately are very telling that I am in the midst of marathon training (this week will probably be my highest mileage week ever).
You know you are marathon training when:
-You go to the grocery store and you buy carbs, carbs and more carbs (missing from picture, the bag of chocolate chips that I opened in the car).
-You foam roll 6 times a day. Seriously. I refuse to get injured over the next 6 weeks.
-Your laundry load is 90% running clothes and 10% other.
-You start thinking… oh, I only have 7 miles to run today. ONLY!?! No, 7 miles is still a long ways to run. You’re distance perspective is crazy during marathon training.
-8 meals a day. Sure, why not?
-When you are driving around town you are thinking about how the road you are on would make a perfect tempo/part of a long run/hill work road for your next run.
-When people ask you what you are doing this weekend you respond by telling them about your long run because your weekend is kind of based all around the long run and you will be on the couch for a very long time after you finish your long run.

Do you have a gym pass? How often do you use it? Which gym?
Favorite carb lately? Favorite type of crackers?

Yes! The whole 7 miles a day thing haha…I remember when I was marathon training I thought my mid-week 10-miler wasn’t anything too crazy and I remember dreading the shorter runs (5-7 miles) because I felt like they weren’t long enough for me to get into the groove. It’s crazy how training at such long distances skews your perceptions.
Kris @ Canadian Girl Runs.
Those are all so true! I remember driving up a hill the other day and being like “This would be AWESOME for hill repeats!”
I think we are a crazy bunch :)
Jessica
LOVE this, Janae.
I am in the middle of marathon training as well so this post was extremely relatable. Favourite carb? Fresh toast covered with peanut butter and nutella. #whyIrun
Meaghan
I just finished marathon training (woooo Boston), so I totally agree with everything above! Also, you find gu packets in every random pocket/bag/running jacket.
http://www.nyviewsnikeshoes.com
Sally @ sweat out the small stuff
I could have just written this post myself!!
Carb choices lately are my usual pancakes, pb&j on whole wheat, soft pretzels and plain potato chips.
You know you are marathon training when you bring your heating pad and ice packs to work to deal with sore and tight muscles. :)
Jackie
Stay healthy!
Kristina @ Blog About Running
My condo has two of its own gyms, so I am very lucky that I can use them anytime for free :) I really love watching the Food Network while running!
[email protected]
Brooke looks so happy on that trampoline!
I don’t have a gym membership. Its all about outside running or at home on my treadmill.
Sending you ‘no injury’ good vibes!!!
Ana Maria
I like your colourful outfit, it’s cute :)
Yes to the gym pass, I love the gym.
Favourite carb is dessert followed by pizza crust.
I have not run a marathon yet!
This is somewhat unrelated but did I miss the Skyscape giveaway results? I have been super excited about it.
Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs
Right now I am loving the flavoured Triscuits — Rosemary & Olive Oil, Dill, Cracked Pepper, etc, etc. So good!
Kristen
Oh my goodness, Janae! I just found out I’ll be running in the NYC Marathon as part of the National MS Society’s Race to Stop MS team! I came on to your blog to read your NYCM race recap, so it’s fitting that you posted just posted on marathon training! When I found out I thought, “I HAVE TO TELL JANAE!” It will be my first marathon and it will be AMAZING!!
Lily @ Lily Runs the World
My favorite carb lately is baguettes. I have been eating an insane amount of bread lately, but I’m completely okay with it.
Kelli
you know you are marathon training when… a friend asks you to get a pedicure and you say “no, I need to keep my blisters and callouses for my runner feet”
Carson
I go to the gym about 3 days a week. Although this week I haven’t gone at all… oops. Favorite carbs are bagels for sure. With cream cheese, always.
livisan
Wow, I cannot believe that 7 miles in an hour is your recovery! that is my long run, and 2 miles in 20 mins is my recovery haha
Sara @ Middleaged Runner
My favorite carb is currently waffles.
Since I just ran Boston I’m having a few days off, which makes my “in marathon training” brain feel confused! I certainly became accustomed to a very busy workout schedule and tons of meals, haha!
I don’t have a gym pass but I have an unlimited yoga pass which I use 2-3 times a week (I would use it more but I live in a small town so they have limited classes!)
I love your gym outfit btw- that’s how I normally look so it’s cool :-)
Marissa @ Run Riss Run
I do have a gym pass but I haven’t been in months. I do plan on going this week since DH is out of town :)
Favorite carbs: pizza and garlic bread, yum!
You know you’re training for a marathon when you ask the pedicure lady to leave your callouses alone ;)
Kari @ Running Ricig
The look on Brooke’s face on the trampoline is pure joy. She is adorable.
I haven’t belonged to a gym in years. Sometimes I miss it, but then I think “I have a treadmill at home, good enough.”
Leah
Probably English muffins. Still think they’re the perfect food, especially with veggie burgers.
I belong to a gym that I really like – there are a lot of locations around my work and home, so I know the gym is never more than a few blocks away.
Danielle
My favorite carbs: Kix cereal, Cheerios, pretzels. And jelly beans because, you know. I’ve never trained for a marathon, but I can always tell when I’ve upped my mileage because I am always, ALWAYS starving!
tess
I do know. Jelly beans are awesome.
Amy @ Long Drive Journey
BE CAREFUL! I bought some Cheez-Its the other day and they were actually reduced fat. Nastiest stuff I’ve ever had. (Ok not really but I could definitely tell a difference). Make sure you don’t buy the ones with the dinosaurs stamped in them because you will be disappointed!
Corrinne
I love Brooke’s little anchor shirt, I wonder if I can find that in adult sizes. I know I am marathon training when compression sleeves/socks become part of my everyday outfit and I have scheduled a two hour window for a nap following my long run.
[email protected]
Haha. These are awesome!
I actually love your shorts in the first pic–where are they from?? (and I have that hello lulu top–love it!)
I’d also add “when you go to bed at 8 pm on a Friday night so you can prep for Saturday’s long run” hah
Sara @ LovingOnTheRun
That is a WHOLE lot of M&M’s!!! I know it is crazy how your mileage views change during marathon training
Kristen
We are so lucky to have a great family fitness place. I can sign my kiddo into supervised gym, supervised swim, or a kiddo strength& cardio room while I work out. There’s even a baby/toddler program (that we haven’t used in a couple years). If it weren’t for the kids programs I’d never get to work out!
Blaire @ Just Been Running
Haha that is hilarious and so true! I am not marathon training at this moment, but I totally get it regarding half marathon training :)
I don’t have a gym pass per say, but we get a free membership to the gym on my floor at work (heck yes!) so I just go every day at lunch! I get a tad sweaty, but we have showers and everything so it’s pretty awesome…I just feel bad for the people around me. Kidding. Sort of ;)
My favorite carb is usually bread of some sort. I don’t really make sandwiches or anything, but I will order them if I go out to lunch. I guess I get carbs from candy mostly. Whoops!
Anna @ That DAMM Runner
We have the same thoughts. In my next post I am going to show a picture of my crazy colorful outfit today!!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats
I’m a carb lover – marathon training or not! And I am such a weather snob this year, I’ve spent way too much time inside on the treadmill!
Caroline
Yes- stay healthy and take care of yourself- no injuries!! I have a free gym to use through my job (SO nice) so I am generally there a small handful of times a week. It’s pretty convenient.
Lily
We should have run together. I ran inside too!
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles
Ha so true – only seven miles may seem like so little but it is still so much! Totally skewed! Favorite carb these days…hmm…I think I am back on sweet potatoes.
Ashley @ Brocblog
I have an LA fitness membership that I use for the pool. I know its kinda gross to go to a cheap a** gym pool but Im trying to swim at least once a week as xt and sometimes theres a good spin class.
Steph D
Most of the non-running things that it would make sense to do when marathon training I actually do all the time, and I refuse to apologize for it. Like wear running clothes 24/7, eat tons of food, binge on carbs… One thing that happens when the marathon gets close is I avoid fun things that could increase my risk of injury, like pick-up soccer games, obstacle races, etc. Knowing me, though, I’m more likely to get hurt doing something stupid like stepping on my dog’s toy when getting out of bed and spraining my ankle.
Megan D
Ugh. So what you are trying to tell me with that meme is that I should probably be running a marathon every day with the amount of m&m’s and/or other treats I eat. Well, that is disappointing.
Dude. The wind was CRAZY last night. I ride to the gym with 4 friends and 2 of them had some serious damage done to their property as a result. I am glad you went to the gym instead. You would have been blown away.
Runner Girl Eats
I go to a fitness studio and when I buy a month pass I go everyday because I am cheap and love to get my money’s worth. I have never trained for a marathon but when I was training for my half I was a big fan of napping on the couch after every long run :)
Rene' Hall
Love my gym – Cooper Fitness Center. I go 3-4 times a week.
I love all carbs.
You know you are marathon training when you plan your work schedule to accommodate your training runs.
Hollie
I’ve really stopped myself from using “only” when I talk about my training. My only 7 miles…and sometimes even 10 miles right now is someones long run. It’s like when people say I’m only running a 5k…no say it proudly! I ran a 5k this weekend that had a 10/15 and half component and I proudly stated I was running the 5k.
Anyways speaking of laundry I need to fold mine…but yeah not going to happen tonight.
Leigha @ Minougirl
I don’t like to think about Subway anymore. The last time I went I got a bad piece of turkey (it was brick hard) and I can’t think about going back. Even though I am in love with their bread!
[email protected]rengo
Ummm. It only takes 674 M&M’s to make up the calorie deficit? Ruh Roh…
tess
I’m lucky enough to get to use the base gym. Thank you to my husband for his 20 years of service…it’s one of the retirement perks.
I work in a bank and we don’t have suckers. We have bins of candy! We have Laffy Taffy, Smarties, Skittles, Nerds and all kinds of deliciousness. It’s the most fabulous of all job perks.
Christine D.
I don’t have a gym pass! I’m thinking about getting one this summer though.
Favorite type of carb=pizza.
I’ve never run a marathon but I have done a half. I know it’s nothing like a full but I can relate to most of the things on the list! Also…1) When you’re REALLY hungry even on days you don’t run 2) When you think way too much about runners gu 3) When water becomes your best friend. :)
Nancy
AHEM. So. I’m wondering if you have already elaborated on this topic and I missed it, or you haven’t talked about it since you mentioned it a while ago. But I’m interested in hearing more about these dates. Not the brown raisin type of food you eat, either my friend! ;)
Naturally Carly
TX family Fitness. Love my gym. Love the treadmill.
Michele @paleorunningmomma
Agree with all the you know you’re marathon training plus I would include:
You complain about how much laundry your family has not realizing half is your running stuff, you insist on feeding yourself before you feed your kids, you can’t wait till your kids go to bed because YOU really need to go to bed, you judge a pair of shorts by the number and quality of the zip pockets
[email protected]
I know I am in marathon training bc my Saturdays are spent doing long runs and not much else bc I am sooooo sleepy! I’m really kinda relieved to be out of marathon training right now (I ran Boston Monday:)) At the end-my running partner and I started saying things like “I can’t wait to just wake up on a Saturday and not have. Specific mileage ahead of me that I am tied to”
As much as i loooooove marathoning-I am loving thatbibonly have halfs on my calendar until October:)
Kristina @ Fast and Foodiest
ahhhh I agree! (says running partner!). We were fantasizing about going out for a “2 hour run” vs 20 miles. We got tired of the pressure, I think. Plus, since it was training for Boston we both had our anxieties surrounding the race- so it was extra tiring.
Becky @ Ok, so here's the plan
I don’t go to a gym, I just have a treadmill at home.
I have been eating a ridiculous amount of rice lately. Love it. My favorite crackers are goldfish crackers. The pizza ones, but not the extreme pizza ones. It matters.
Mary (Sisters Running the Kitchen)
Yes I belong to a gym…I would say that I use it about 3-4 times a week…definitely more during the winter! I mostly use the treadmill & teach/go to body pump classes! :)
Carbs are my favorite..this week my favorite carbs have been banana bread & pasta
You know you are marathon training when everyday is planned around when you are going to run…and eat of course!
Livi
Favorite carb…chocolate, gluten-free cookies, oatmeal, quinoa, cookies… so many choices!
Kay
you have random cuts, bruises, scrapes in weird places and no good explanation for non-runners..
Brittney @ Sweets 'N' Greens
I used to love (still do) the lollipops from the bank!
I have a gym pass, but I probably use it once a week? Luckily I bought a Costco 24 hour membership, so it’s only $15ish a month….so I don’t have to feel bad when I decide running outside sounds nicer :)
Losing Lindy
wow I have never done a whole nor trained for one and I saw the 7 miles and thought that isn’t so bad, and yet I haven’t done that much distance since my last half last September, funny thing is we did our first 10k which is almost 7 a few week sago perception is crazy
[email protected]
You are amazing! I’m training for a half marathon and can’t imagine training for a full one. Last week during my long run I told myself, “Only 3 miles left!” 6 months ago, 3 miles would have been my long run. Perspective sure is crazy. :)
Megan @ The Skinny-Life
LA Fitness gym pass here! I use mine for spin class, swimming and strength training. You know your in training when you take ice baths everyday! My favorite snack carb right now is Pirates Booty.
Sarah
I hit the gym everyday for 2 hours. I lived in Arizona for 7 years so I’m a huge weather snob! Except this weekend I have the Frontrunner century (62mile metric century) this weekend and the weather is supposed to be cold rainy and windy.
I love sweet potatoes.
And marathon training…. Right now I’m training for a century bike ride (100 mile) so for me it’s more like you know your century training when your 10 mile marathon training runs are on your “off” day
Kelly
I go to the gym but have slacked lately because we have a treadmill in our house plus running outside is so nice right now!
Brittany
I call your outfit, “color blocking at its best.” It’s all the rage this year.
autismmum
Only 674 mms for a marathon!!!
You look gorgeous in anything. I haven’t had a gym membership since my twins were born. I do love the gym though – I miss pump classes
Favourite carbs – hot x buns/ freshly baked scones (with jam and cream and tea)
Let me see 7 miles=11.26 km. That’s a pretty solid distance in my books.
marissa @ the boot
Hi! I’m a new runner (like, only been on 8 runs new!) and I’m obsessed! I’m a Zumba instructor and was looking for something different, and I found it! Anyway, i’ve been reading all your old posts and I love your recaps and all your great info. So, thanks! :)
Polly @ Tasty Food Project
I’m not a marathon runner but I do enjoy using a foam roller to prevent injuries.
My favorite carbs are English muffins! I like having them with almond butter and jelly!
Flower
Those Bagels with Biscoff! You must try it.
[email protected] My Miles!
Agree! I love that combo!
Tantra
I belong to planet fitness.. in the winter I went way more, I’m down to like 1 time a week ( I also tan, I know its bad… but it’s still cold and I need vitamin D).
My favorite carb lately has been angel hair pasta with organic butter (yes I can taste the difference)…parm cheese and of couse salt!
You know you are marathon training when you are always hungry… maybe I’m just always hungry lol
DontBlameTheKids
I work for a law enforcement agency (doing environmental law; weird, I know) so my gym is free. I take advantage of it all winter and rainy days.
the running schlub
The treadmill is great for recovery runs, I have the same problem with wanting to speed up. That Subway looked awesome, now I have the craving.
Gym Pass – We have LA Fitness, I never use it
Carb/Cracker – Bread of course and wheat thins
http://runningschlub.blogspot.com/
Kayla @ kpLovingit
Whatev…..that running outfit totally goes together!!!….or it would in my book, anyway. I didn’t do laundry this week and ended up wearing a shirt to work that only covered half of my belly (I’m 33 weeks prego), with a basically sheer undershirt to tuck into my scrub bottoms so no skin would be poking out from under the way too short shirt. Got lots of comments and awkward stares for the next 12 hours!!!
[email protected] My Miles!
Ha! Those are all so true. I was nodding my head at each one. And even when I’m not training for a marathon I think about how when I am, I’ll need to revisit those places we drove by.
Always love carbs so they are always on my mind. power me through the day : )
Rachel
And yet, you still look super cute with mismatched workout clothes. how is that even possible? BTW, that happened to me this morning. Last minute packing for a lunch run and I had nothing. It makes me want to just go run over to Target and buy new workout clothes so I could avoid doing the laundry. Laundry… yeah, that’s another topic. I feel like my laundry is always running a marathon…
Nicole @Pink Elephant on Parade
Um, I kind of dress like that all the time when I run. I also assert that when I leave to workout in the morning it’s so dark no one can see what I’m wearing anyway so basically matching is optional.
Christina
This cracked me up! I’m hoping to do my first full in the fall and join that club. The photo of Brooke and Curly so looks like u and your sis! So sweet!!
[email protected]
Love this! I just did my first marathon so I can totally relate! You know you are marathon training when your Friday night bedtime is 9:30 and you wake up at 5:00 on a Saturday.
Mel
Love this post! I am marathon training now via The Hanson Method and everything I do revolves around how many miles I have to run that day. It’s crazy but I love it. Even on the days when I get up at 3AM to get in my 10 mile tempo run before work. The best part is when my 5 year old daughter asks how many miles I have to run that day and no matter my answer she says “that’s not very far at all!”
Kathryn Shaffer
I live in durango, CO and I am also training for Utah Valley. I love it when you talk about it!
Kay
Why does 674 M&Ms seem like a low number for a marathon?? haha
Runwright
I am dealing with some stomach issues and needed some good cleaning carbs so I am all about quinoa this week.
And…. I would think I get more than 674 m&ms for 26.2 miles.
Megan
I joined Planet Fitness a couple of years ago. I’m not thrilled with the place but at $10/month, it’s hard to beat that. I only use the treadmill right now so there’s no need for anything more but I’m thinking about re-joining our local YMCA. They offer so much more but the membership fees are A LOT. Well, I have some thinking to do.
My favorite carb will always be bread. Not just lately. I love bread very, very much. :) As for crackers, I love those Town House Flip Sides with the pretzel on one side and cracker on the other. Yum!
I know I’m in half marathon training when as you said, my entire weekend revolves around that long run and how the weather will be. :)
Amy @ runlikeabird
I pretty much feel psyched about any run that isn’t a Saturday long run (though I love those, too). It’s so easy to say, “Woo hoo, only 7 miles today! That’s just an HOUR!” when you’re running two hours or more on your other runs. :) LOVE the carbo-loading part of this process!
Rachel
I’m training for my first half marathon, so I completely relate to your list. Hilarious. Because you’re right — only 7 miles?! Lol.
Courteney O
I think it is adorable that Curly really knows how to pose for the blog pictures. You have taught them well!
