First Family Road Trip

You know you are obsessed with your child when you make your husband be your chauffeur alone in the front seat so you can sit in the back with her for the 6 hour drive.  You didn’t think I skip my FMW and honey bunches of oats combo in yesterday did you?  They are just as delicious eaten in the car.

As you can tell she was really excited to go on a road trip!

The drive went by pretty fast and next thing we knew it we were being attacked by Charlie.

He just came and rested his head on my leg and fell asleep.  Dogs and babies are pretty much the greatest things in the world.  PS I was eating the best nectarine you can imagine in the below picture.

 Charlie also really liked Brooke.

And Brooke liked everyone she got to meet!

If you have read my blog for a while you may remember one of the traditions that we do whenever we visit Billy’s family.  We ALWAYS go to Jack in the Box at 11 pm.  It is one of my very favorite traditions especially because it involves Oreo shakes.

Photo 1 2 copy

And other delicious menu items but I decided against posting a close-up of my waffle sandwich but just know it was incredible.  My MIL convinced me to leave sleeping Brooke with her while we went for our late night dinner.  I made it through my first time away from her but I am pretty sure I brought her up in the conversation every 2 minutes while we ate.  Separation anxiety.

My sister gets here today so we will be waiting for them in the driveway with the big signs that we made to welcome them for our party filled weekend.

What is your long run or race this weekend?

-I will be going on a walk around the neighborhood.

Oreo, vanilla, strawberry or chocolate shake?

Where was the last place you took a road trip to?

Are you going to be eating anything extra delicious today?

In July, we took a 3 1/2 week road trip through Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, & South Dakota with our 3 year old & 7 month old. So fun!!!

And, I’m going for chocolate!

I am heading on for a 10 mile run in a few minutes ….my longest run yet!

An Oreo shake sounds delicious!

Oh man my husband is going to kill me – all these pictures of Brooke are making me think of trying again for a girl….we have 3 BOYS (6/3/1.5). In no way does my sanity need another kiddo….but Brooke is SOOOO CUTE, it is almost beyond impossible to resist the thought! :)

this morning is my first 8 mile run, I am fairly anxious about it but know I can push through it and just take it slow. I have do it if I am going to tackle the 9.5 / 12 / 14 miles runs that are behind it on my long days within the next 6 wks. (eek!!)

It so nice that you get to spend the long weekend with family, and as usual, Brooke is so cute! She makes the cutest faces!
I love all things chocolate, but strawberries shakes come in at a close second. We’re celebrating my grandma’s birthday this weekend, so there will be delicious cake involved!!
Have a great time with your family.

i would vote for all those flavors rolled into one perfect shake.

i’m about to get scooped up by EP for a tiny road trip this weekend. we’re going to car racing… he loves it. i agree to accompany once a year. we shall see.

BUT, i’ve packed a few delicious things, because last year, my frozen veggie burgers got all soggy both days after heat + ice-filled cooler. i made pasta salad for everyone with a new delicious creamy balsamic dressing, and a weird quinoa concoction. and packed all the fixings for soy turkey and cheese sandwiches! i feel so domestic. last year, we bought a liter of soda and frozen veggie burgers on our way. hahaha.

So great you’re a quick road trip away from Billy’s family! And, I bet you cannot wait to see your sis and the kiddos- have fun with them!
We’ve gone on two road trips this summer- one 17 hour ride to Oregon and last weekend an 11 hour ride to penticton for our ironman Canada race!

I have a 7 mile run to do today and I’m heading to the kitchen for breakfast (fuel!) after I finish this comment! Hope you have a wonderful day Janae!

Today’s “long” run is 8 miles at race pace for next weekend’s MARATHON!!! Eeeeeek! Is it weird that I’m SO sick of the taper (one week in haha) and I’m actually excited for the marathon so I can have a long run again?

My last road trip was about 3 weeks ago to a triathlon 3 hours away with friends. It was awesome!! I’m obsessed with watching tri’s.. Extra fun when your friends are racing!

YAY!! what a conikidink at 11 pm we were all at jack in the box too! after the dodgers game a few of us were still hungry. my 1st choice was the waffle sandwich (I’ve been wanting to try it) but, I opted for the chicken pita. ;)

I’m going out the door for a long run after I send you this. Don’t know how long yet so, we’ll see how I feel. :)

Vegas & Vanilla shakes! xo luv ya & have the best weekend with your family!!!

Reply

Oh my goodness, we shoudl have gone together. I LOVE your Dodgers pictures… such a gorgeous family. You have got to try the waffle sandwich! Hope you had a great long run today Pam. Love ya!

Reply

Today, I will eat Teddy Grahams. LOVE munching on those little guys!!
Ohmygoodness — I am SOOOO terrible at choosing flavours! Of anything!! It causes me more anxiety than any other food-related choice. But for thick shakes, chocolate would probably be my favourite (not the case for ice cream though … haha. Vanilla in that instance. And vanilla for protein powder too).
I ran my long run on Thursday, recovery run yesterday and another today. Worked out better because I’m working the weekend.
Enjoy the family time!! (Ps. Still LOVING Brooke’s hair! Too cute!!)

Mmm, that Oreo shake looks delicious! And if I get to the store to buy milk, I will be baking a batch of donut muffins later. So good!

I did my first 20-mile run yesterday. It was hard, but also kind of awesome to have run that far!

Oreo all the way. No question.

Have a great weekend with your family!

Today is my BIRTHDAY! 23 years old today. So I hope to be having some cake, some wine, some cheese…and maybe some texas roadhouse (my FAV!)

Oh thats a hard decision—chocolate FTW though! I remember my first time leaving my little guy, he was super young too so he slept the whole time I was away :)

(and ps because we all want little brooke the safest as possible (and im kind of a car seat freak ;) ) you should remove the strap covers for now so the chest clip sits directly between her arm pits. They are perfectly safe-unless they keep the strap from fitting correctly. I think we started using them again around 4-5 months.)

Reply

VANESSA!! HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I hope you had the best day ever and had a delicious meal at texas roadhouse (I love that place too!). Thank you so much for the tip, I really appreciate it!

I know you hear this a lot I am sure, but Brooke is such a pretty baby!! :) She is so alert! :)
I took a 3 hour road trip with no AC Friday and when I made my first stop I thought about buying a milkshake and pouring it all over me!! It was so hot!!

My husband and I took a 5 week road trip in April/May under the guise of driving a car from New Jersey to Cali – but mostly, we just wanted to visit all the friends & family we had living between the two coasts (the trip took us 10,000 miles!). It was AMAZING to squeeze so many people we love into a single (admittedly lengthy) trip.

Welcome to So Cal! Not sure exactly where you’re staying, but 6 hrs south of SF puts you in the LA area. Welcome! :)

I am currently resisting offering you a zillion suggestions of places to eat.

But if you’re looking for a casual, fun, reasonably priced spot for someone to take you out to dinner to, I strongly suggest trying The Counter (you can see if there’s near you here http://www.thecounterburger.com/locations/). For some reason I just had the feeling to suggest this one to you this morning. It’s a gourmet burger joint, and you can choose everything (burger type, bun, toppings, cheese, sauce). I’m sure Brooke would love it, too. And they might even have an oreo shake. :)

But for now, enjoy lots of time with family!

And if you find yourselves passing through the LA area in the next month (ha!), let me know. We will take you for delicious, authentic Asian food of some sort – and I don’t mean take-out Chinese. :) [Also, my husband is an IP technology attorney, and I’m a runner. So, they can talk about law, we can talk about running. Perfection.]

Reply

WOW YUM!!! The counter sounds amazing. I must go there asap!! We are down in Rancho Santa Margarita. Girl, I am totally taking you up on your LA offer next time I am there. I am pretty sure the four (five) of us would have a blast together!!

PS your 5 week road trip sounds awesome!

Reply

Bad news is…we’re only here for another few weeks. So you guys had better hurry up & schedule another road trip in a hurry! :) Or give me a shout out, and we’ll meet you for yogurt as you pass through on your way back to SF. :)

Hope Brooke is turning out to be a happy traveler! :)

Belated congratulations on beautiful Brooke! You are making life with a newborn seem completely effortless. I don’t know is you are superwoman or Brooke is an easygoing baby, or you just want to keep your blog a positive space, but it seems like you are all doing great!

The last road trip I took was to Atlantic city

My favorite kind of milkshake is mint chocolate chip :)

Did 6 miles yesterday and 3 today.
Chocolate.
Our last road trip was driving from North Carolina to Arizona. It was fun, but not sure I would want to do it again.
BBQ food! Had awesome pizza last night.

Love Oreo shakes!!

Brandon and I picked up some super fresh salsa at a farmers’ market this morning, so plenty of chips and salsa will be consumed! I also plan on making grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch … yum!!

Reply

I’ve already had a delicious bowl of cereal and am planning to make an avocado hummus….yum! My family went on a road trip this summer to San Antonio. It was lots of fun! Your oreo shake looks fabulous! I would take that or chocolate. Have a fun weekend!

Reply

8 mile run this morning hopefully :)

Strawberry shake!!! It will always have special place in my heart :)

Last palce I took a road trip was to a place called San Juan Islands (its off the coast of washington), frankley I’m just not a fan of road trips anymore haha

My favorite breakfast toast!!! toast with honey, chocolate hazelnut butter, and bananas (in that order), taste so good!!!

My long run this weekend was 6 miles (just finished a few hours ago!). It was my first time doing 6 miles, and although it was slow, I’m proud I did it. That just means next time I can do it faster! As far as shakes go, it’s a toss up between Oreo and vanilla. I’ve had some Oreo shakes that weren’t that good but you can never go wrong with vanilla. Love road trips, last one was to VT, I love the drive up there, it’s so pretty. Have fun with the in-laws and sister/kiddos!

GAH! Brooke is just the cutest. I look forward to a new picture and story every day.

I’m a new runner, so my run this weekend won’t be long, but, I’m plugging away at it! I always look forward to my next one. My gym has a pool, so I’ll definitely be doing some swimming, as well, and will take my brother’s dog for a nice, long walk on Labor Day.

I love cookies ‘n cream ice cream and Oreo Blizzards, but I always go for a classic vanilla milkshake.

I road-tripped in April from Pittsburgh to Norfolk to see my friend play in his first professional playoff (hockey) game. I could only go for one game, so we were in the car for a total of 16 hours to spend 14 hours in Norfolk. Totally worth it, though.

I’m currently eating a lemon poppy seed bagel, which is divine. I’ll be making some chocolate chip zucchini bread sometime this weekend and will have lots of grilled deliciousness on Monday.

Reply

Loooove Brooke’s hair! She’s too stinking cute, just like her mommy!

No runs for me this weekend. Im resting all weekend and enjoying time with my hubby.

I’ve never had an Oreo shake. I do love chocolate!

I’m actually in the car now headed to Cleveland with my hubby! Mini road trip to celebrate his birthday so there will be many yummy eats! It’s not my bday, but I’m hoping I get a say and get some chipotle and ice cream :)

Reply

Our last road trip was to Yosemite with my parents. It was lovely. And this weekend, I’m hoping to do a local 10k. I’m in the process of gradually persuading my husband.

Reply

I ran 19 long, slow miles…i forgot how much it hurts to run that far but I’m glad to have gotten the distance in

Reply

Brooke is the cutest! :) My long run this weekend is only 4 miles, but it’s the beginning of my half marathon training which I’m excited about :)

Reply

I’m running my first 10K (I’ve ran halfs but not even one 10k..) and it’s a “midnight” theme run at 9pm in the evening, good thing I’m good at running in the evening. I have soo much energy because I’m so happy and nervous and the race starts in 1,5 hours! And I’ve hade some coffee too, that makes me even more hyperactive :D

Reply

I’ll be running a marathon on Monday!! It’s in Colorado Springs and on 80% dirt so I’m looking forward to it being easier on my legs and a speedy recovery.

Reply

Vanilla shake always, even better if it’s from Maccy D’s!

Food eaten on road trips always tastes better to me than food eaten at home. Donno what it is. It could be the simplest sandwich or pack of chips, but it tastes like 100x better. And road trips are freakin’ amazing. The last one I took was up to the mountains a couple of weeks ago, which is only like a 4 hour drive, but it was still good times :) Long walks on the agenda for me as well this weekend. Have fun with your fam!

Reply

oh. my. goodness. That shake looks amazing! I would get strawberry, it’s my favorite flavor for milkshakes and ice cream! And Brooke looks so big already!!!

Reply

YAY! I have internet again! I have missed reading your posts! And Amanda is right, food eaten on a rode trip is better than at home! I LOVE road trips and can’t wait until Christmas to go to Arizona. I will be trying out a pair of running shoes I got as a birthday gift later today. From your last post Brooke looks like she will be an amazing athlete!

YAY! Family time, baby! Love it.

Vanilla shake<–with health bar. Mmmmm.

She is SO cute!!!

Hey Janae! This is a really random question but I’m trying to stop driking coffee and I’m looking for encouragement. Im always really fun and bubbly, but I also drink coffee to get that jolt. I drink probably three cups a day. I was curious if you drank coffee? If not, do you feel energized throughout the whole day because you seem very consistent and not tired. How much sleep do you get everynight/ how much water do you drink? I’d appreciate more than you know if you took a moment to respond! Thanks love! I read your blog almost everyday just to stalk your beautiful pictures and your adorable little baby. So so precious!

Reply

Hey Carlee! I have actually never even tried coffee. I used to drink caffeine through diet coke but I quit a few years ago and I love not needing caffeine to wake me up. I don’t sleep that much anymore but before Brooke I always slept about 8 hours and I go through about 12 water bottles now (thanks to breastfeeding). I definitely feel energized throughout the day but I hit tired patches at about 3 and late at night. I wake up with a ton of energy though. When I quit diet coke I just had to do it cold turkey. I am an all or nothing kind of person so I just had to quit all at once. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions!

Reply

That’s funny! In June of 2011 it started as Diet Coke until December I switched to coffee cuz I felt like it was a) More socially acceptle, and b) I did not crash as hard but mainly cuz I did not want to feel bloated! I do love the taste of coffee. but the main reason I drink it is for the caffeine jolt to get me going. I am in college and am close to my RA I gave her my coffee pot and grinds ( I, like you, am an all or nothing person as well). I am going to get more sleep now that I will be on a better schedule and my body will rule me versus confusing it with coffee. I am nervous though because as of 36 hours without I’m feeling very withdrawn from people and not so outgoing ( which with caffeine, I’m very loud, alert, and talkative!). I’m just afraid of not being the “me” I’ve been for so long. Caffeine makes life sooooo fun to me. lol. Any encouragement about what you went through? and how you get past the 3 o clock slump?

Reply

I totally understand that caffeine jolt and especially the need for it in college:) Good for you to quit and focus on getting more sleep to get your energy. It is going to be hard for a few weeks but before you know it you won’t even think about it! I think the best thing to do (if you can) is take a 10-20 minute power nap or rest. I do that a few times a week and I feel so much more energized after, it is amazing! PLEASE keep me updated with how you are doing!

Reply

My long run is the Disneyland Half Marathon tomorrow!!!! And if those exclamation weren’t enough, here’s more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply

AHHHH SO SO FUN!! GOOD LUCK, you are going to rock it!

Brooke is beyond adorable! I’m loving all your baby posts! They get me excited! Although I’m revisiting all your pregnancy posts now that I’m in full pregnancy mode – almost 4 months! No run for me…for 4 more Weeks :( no exercise allowed at all actually…boy that makes me cranky! No milkshakes for me sadly…had one when I was little and let’s just say they don’t “agree” with me..lol sorry if tmi!

Reply

Hey Ali! Thanks for your comment! WAHOOO 4 months, that is so exciting. Do you know what you are having. Why can’t you exercise?

Reply

We are going to be surprised :) so lots of green and yellow stuff haha! I started spotting pretty bad (sorry if tmi), scared the crap out of me…dr found I have partial placenta previa. Basically the placenta formed lower than usual..not sure what you know of but I but don’t want to get too detailed if you don’t want to hear that kind of stuff! So I’m on pelvic rest and can’t do any exercise or strenuous activity…can’t even vacuum! They’ll recheck me in 4 weeks to see if it’s moved..praying it does. Then I can resume life as usual, I’m told if they find it this early it tends to move to where it should be and shouldn’t cause any furer issues. Fingers crossed!

Reply

I will be doing a “long run” of 4-5 miles. Beginning of half training! Yay!

Reply

Way to go Brandi! That is so exciting, you are going to rock your half!

18 challenging but glorious miles along the ocean while on vacation in Carlsbad, California. I love this state!

Definitely Oreo shake! I had Oreo cookies and cream ice cream last night. Maybe that’s what made my run so challenging! Oh well, it was worth it.
