Switching Up Our Workout Routines

Remember my friend Jessica from the other night of froyo eating? Well, she convinced me that I needed to get back into pump and go to a 6 a.m. class with her.

This morning at 5:38 I texted her to see if she was still going to go to pump.  I crossed all of my fingers and toes (and Billy’s toes while he was sleeping) that she would respond ‘no….let’s go next week.’  Heaven forbid I find my own personal motivation to go lift heavy things, I NEED someone to go with me.

She texted back, ‘yep.’

I went.

I hurt now.

Pretty sure we did infinity burpees and I wanted to cry a little.  The body pump at my gym is different than most other places.  The specific teacher makes up the routine that we do and it changes from week to week.  Today the instructor incorporated a bunch of plyometrics in between sets that made my heart feel like it was going to explode.

I am SO glad that I rolled out of bed and went this morning.  Sometimes it is really hard to get out of routine with our workouts.  Our body adapts to what we are used to and so we NEED to switch things up every now and then and confuse our muscles (I know that sounded like a lecture to you but really I am just lecturing myself so that I get back in the habit of trying new things).

I haven’t had a burn like I did today in a long time and I love tricking my body, muhahahaha.

I thought it was pretty crazy that 12 squats made my legs burn on fire, yet just a few weeks ago I ran a marathon and they were fine.  Hmmmmm.

————————————————————

Billy had to borrow my blow dryer because he has an important photoshoot today.  Okay, that’s a lie, he just needed it for a car thing he is working on so i am sporting a sweaty/greased back stylish look today.

Once again this is one of those instances that I will spare you the picture.  I am sure you can imagine a sweaty ponytail with a few hair horns near my side burns.

———————————————————–

Last randomness of the day:  My sis got us shirts to wear tonight to the movies.

Photo 4

I convinced Billy to come see the premiere of Breaking Dawn with us tonight (neither of us have read the books or seen the movies, this should be interesting).  I asked my students what team I should be on (edward or jacob) so that I can kind of have some idea of what is going on in the movie. They told me Team Jacob….is that right one?

What was the last thing (fitness wise) you did out of your normal routine or comfort zone?

Are you a burpee fan?

What is the ABSOLUTE best movie treat that I should take with me tonight (that will also help keep me awake)?

I’ve been thinking of seeing Breaking Dawn, but haven’t read the books or seen the other movies either. It just looks so good.

Burpees are awesome for the workout, but kill me. Just like mountain climbers and jump squats. I think they’re made up my crazy trainers who like to see people in pain.

Reply

jillian michaels’ dvds are always an amazing way to switch up my workout–and they’re always hard for me. I am usually laying on the floor for a few minutes afterward.

i think you should just smuggle a large yogurtland into the theater tonight. just bring your biggest purse! (brings back memories of smuggling into the HBLL–i think my best one was a 44 oz diet coke AND frozen yog from maverik. at the same time!)

The last thing I tried was basketball. I didn’t take gym in high school because I was dancing so much I got my credits waived, so I’ve only recently started playing with my YW (I’m stake sports coordinator). I am amazed at what a workout it is!

Victor the Torture Trainer makes me do weird stuff all the time. Including Burpee’s, which I like JUST as much as Inchworms (I get your sarcasm).

Milk Duds!!!!

Have a love/hate relationship with burpees.

Team Edward. But Jacob is SO FUN to look at. And makes ne have naughty thoughts about someone 10 years younger than me. ;)

A social night after a night of conferences, you are a trooper. Treat yourself to a fountain drink……..perhaps Root Beer?
Have fun!

Burpees = DEATH!

I went to spin on Monday and it was the first time in a few weeks. I’m not a huge fan of it, but I got to keep up crosstraining. All I can say after Monday is OUCH!

Movie treats? Sour Patch Kids!

Haha, I love the graphic “zero people like this” hahaha perfect. I haaate burpees.

My bootcamp instructor makes us do push up burpees – painful!

Hate burpees!
I have a shirt that I am wearing to the movie too it says “I am with the wolves”, so yes, team Jacob :)
I am sneaking in a PB&J sandwich for the movie!

The last uncomfortable thing I did out of my norm was Crossfit- holy cow! That stuff kicks some serious booty! We did do burpees and everyone moaned and groaned, but I kinda liked em!!! Weird, huh?
If you have a Trader Joes there(?) you need to try the dark chocolate with sea salt. Oh. My . Holy . Goodness. You will die! – and then be a vampire!LOL! Have fun tonight!

Hahah Jacob isn’t the right one – your kids just told you that since people think he’s the hot one. I loved the booked and have enjoyed the movies… should be interesting for you to see this moving without prior info on it! Good luck!

Humm Hersey’s Cookies N’ Cream!!! im still craving it ( still hevent managed to get anymore sent to me yet, i live in silly england ) oooh and some jolly ranchers. my friend sent me these both over and they were the best!!

My gym offers a jump & crunch. Ya. Jump roping for an hour was out of my comfort zone.

I like burpees. For the first minute or two… ;)

If there were a way to keep junior mints frozen, then I would suggest that. Peanut m&m’s are good. Or chocolate covered cinnamon bears. Crap. Now I want all three of those.

Oh and if you are going by the books, then it is team Edward. But if you are going by the movies, then it is team Jacob, If you haven’t read the books of seen the movies, you are in for something tonight. The last book is cray cray.

Reply

Everyone always says team Jacob and I don’t understand it. I haven’t read the books but I’ve seen the movies. What is this obsession with Jacob?!

Reply

I actually tried a new workout today from one fit foodie. It was her 480 workout. Heard of it? It’s so hard I quit 3/4 through. OK halfway through. Think push ups and burpees galore. KILLER.

Ha, you make me laugh, and I like it.
You and your sis should take a giant bag of peanut M&Ms with you to the movie theater. Either that or PB M&Ms. Those are the 2 absolute best movie snacks. Trust me. MOVING ON.

oh, i guess that was all. G’NIGHT!

Reply

I kinda actually like Burpees and plyo work…i know, i’m crazy.

Reply

You forgot to mention the burpees with weight lift into a double-inclined-pushup, plus the alternating squat jumps into mountain climbers, 180-degree jumping squats with a bench (what?!) and spider-crawls. Yeah, we are pretty hard core…or we just got our butts kicked. (I know what it is for me, haha). Thanks for motivating me to do the elliptical after when all I wanted to do was go back to bed.

Have SO much fun at the movie tonight! Team Jacob for the movies, because he’s better to look at. :)

Reply

Stability ball hamstring curls and Single Leg Deadlifts….

I still feel the soreness… and it’s been THREE DAYS!!!

I also set a PDR on Monday and I ran 9 miles :)

Reply

oh burpees hurt so good. i’ve been doing a lot of them lately, but i’ve been making them a little extra tricky with some extra add ins. maybe i do plank rows with weights before i jump into the burpee, or tricep kickbacks in plank, or a side crunch, or something else strange. it’s good to keep things interesting!

Reply

Oh my goodness! I have to say I can’t believe you haven’t seen any of the Twilight movies or read the books. Janae you would love the books!
I haven’t tried the body pump class out yet…I’m a little intimidated by all your posts about it…but I’m sure at some point I will tackle it!

Reply

I LOVE burpees! Not sure why or how I was blessed with the gene that likes them, because man are they hard and man do all my clients hate when I make them do them! ;) Way to switch up the routine!

Have fun at the movies…and eat some peach penguins for me! Those are mine and my husband’s must-haves when we see a movie. :D

Reply

I started doing Jillian Michaels Shred- love level 3- And I love to hate burpees!! what a great body workout. To a movie- I always bring a bigger purse to bring goodies in- Diet Coke and my latest sweet tooth item- GIRL scout cookies- the new lemon are my fave!

Reply

Hate burpees! For me running was switching things up for me. Honestly I didnt think I was capable of running (I used the elliptical a lot, do yoga, weights, walk on treadmill). Now I am so hooked on running. I am not great but I enjoy challenging myself and have seen improvement on how far I can go without stopping to walk :)

As far as movie candy I am a big fan of sour patch kids or mike and ikes :)

Reply

5 miles tonight!!! Still my longest straight distance without walking… 46:48 which was epic for me :-D

HATE burpees. And I”m with you…. nothing makes me want to cry like squats and lunges lol idk why…

Best movie treat = mini wine bottles that fit in your purse and dark chocolate raisenettes. At midnight tonight I’ll be turning a quarter century OLD. So have some extra candy on my behalf please :-D

Reply

I strongly dislike burpees even though I do them all the time. Jillian Michaels latest torture devide (aka Killer Buns & Thighs dvd) has ONE LEGGED burpees!!! You’re killing me Jillian! That has been my latest switch up in routines. Loving the lower body burn!

Reply

technically there are 121 BURPEES on my schedule tomorrow morning……my max is 55 (that is also with 10 other exercises 11 reps a piece) It was last weeks workout 11 exercises 11 sets 11 reps – last week I only accomplished 11 exercises for 5 sets 11 reps before I almost passed out LOL..i’m sorta of scared of tomorrow LOL.

See: http://www.spartanrace.com/texas-obstacle-racing-spartan-sprint-2012.html to find out why I am torturing myself :)

Reply

oh girl, you know I love my burpees. Keep them up! youre a rockstar!

Reply

NOOOOOO! You’re giving into to the vampire movie thingy? Sigh.

I love doing new workouts, but I hate classes. Well, not so much the workout that I hate, I hate trying to remember when the class is. And heaven forbid I wake myself up for a gym class. Now if they paid me to go to the class… meh- I still wouldn’t.

So my all time favorite thing at the movies when I lived in California candy stores had jelly bellies, and I always bought a pound of popcorn flavor and a pound of dr pepper flavor. I know, party animal right here.

Zumba and Ballet yikes!

No idea what Burpee is/out of the loop on that.

Movie snacks..hot soft pretzel with peanut m and ms!

Last week I did a ton of swimming instead of my normal workouts. I kind of like swimming, but as a normal workout routine it seems to be extra time consuming with having to change in and out of a bathing suit. I’m not a fan of doing burpees, but I think they are good to do.

My favorite movie candy is peanut butter M&Ms. Mmmm. :-)

Reply

I love/hate burpees.

I havent seen any of the twilight movies, but I can imagine as a teacher you would want to know what your students are talking about all the time.

I like movie treats, but dont buy them b/c they are so $$. I do like to sneak in a soda and some reece’s pieces.

Reply

Okay, I love Jacob. Mostly because he always takes his shirt off and is too perfect to look at for an entire movie. Edward is pretty beautiful too but no shirt-ab action is involved with him. But he is the romantic one. It’s really hard to choose =/ I choose both. Or Jacob. Haha! Take chocolate covered raisins! Best movie snack. I did a circuit workout yesterday and posted about it! I’m sooo sore, but it’s awesome :) Burpees are death. They work your whole body though so they are good to do but I never do them lol

Reply

I HATE burpees more than anything. Even pushups.

Bring Reese’s pieces and Swedish berries to the movies. Those will keep you thoroughly entertained!!

I am curious to see what you think about the movie since you haven’t seen the previous ones! Have fun!

Reply

I started yoga a while back. I took it up more for relaxation but I can’t believe what a great sweat I get from it.

No one likes burpees, and if they do, they’re freaking crazy.

Sour Patch Kids or Raisinets are my movie candy vote.

Reply

Yes, yes- definitely team Jacob- he’s the funnier one :D I always go for the funny guys!
So I read all of the books, but I’m not a huge fan of the movies- they are just too dark in my opinion- dark as in ‘it’s dark outside’ NOT dark as in evil. I know, I know I’m odd ;)
So glad you made it to Pump- I like how the instructor at your gym does it- seems like I would like it more that way than the traditional way.
Hope you enjoy the movie tonight- can’t wait to hear some feedback about it!

Reply

You are so right about mixing things up, I haven’t been to a group class or done circuit training in ages. I’ve gotten so comfortable with my running and lifting weights on my own that I’m actually scared to get back into all of that!

Reply

I LOVE burpees. I feel so powerful and strong. What I do hate is pushups. They are the worst, and I feel like a complete weakling every time I do them.

Sour candies should be good for keeping you awake, but I don’t like sour candy. I would get chocolate and tootsie rolls.

Reply

Ooh, Hot Tamales cinnamon candy!

Reply

I have to admit, I actually really enjoy burpees. Maybe enjoy isn’t the right word, they are effin hard but I dunno, I don’t MIND them as much as other things. I hate squats however, they suck hardcore.

I’m not even going to bother trying to see Breaking Dawn until next week, Thursdays Midnight showing, Friday’s 3 showings and Saturday’s 5 showings are already sold out!! It’s insanity. Probably doesn’t help that I live in a city with ONE theater. When I read the books I was totally Team Edward, but I find in the movies Edward is just SO ANNOYING and so overprotective, I switched to Team Jacob cause he’s sexy, clearly Team Jacob is the losing team lol but it’s an alright kind of losing.

I love movie theatre popcorn, it’s my one treat these days, but I always feel guilty and then work out like crazy the next day lol seems to be working! Enjoy the movie!!

Reply

Burpees- tough but definitely worth it.

Now as for the snacks… milk duds are needed. And sour patch kids. M and M’s also… good for sharing (if you’re that way inclined).

Also, if you don’t want to eat too much candy (what???), take a tootsie pop :)

Reply

Burpees and lunges are like the plague for me…I stay far far away from both…although I felt like punishing myself this morning and lunged :-/!

Reply

I love burpees but they are HARD which means they are legit. It sound like this Body Pump is revamping it’s format? Interesting. Maybe joining the crossfit movement.

I am Team Jacob but many shake their heads at me because they are so TEAM Edward (Rob Pat). I’m curious what you’ll think having not read the books!

Reply

Burpees are no fun, I’m not a fan.

Take Milk Duds, they are the best movie food!

hahaha love the burpee image. its so true.

Reply

OOH I hope you had fun at Twilight! I’ve never seen the movies/read the books either, but I loooove midnight premiers lol.

BodyPump sounds INSANE. burpees? ughh. I’ve never taken a class like that….I guess the last workout thing I did that was out of my routine was pool running…but that’s not even that weird for me…hmm. Maybe I need to go lift weights or take a class or something!

Reply

I’d pick Team Charlie (Bella’s dad) over the boys. I always drag my husband to the movies with me and he’s a rare find…he’s actually enjoyed them all. Though we don’t tell his male friends this info.

Reply

I actually love burpees–SO hard but so good! HAh.

I’ve seen the movies and read the books….it is a good story line I guess, but I think I like Edward for Bella better.

Take Junior Mints–YUMMMMM!!

Reply

Erm, where did u get that tee? My friend would beyond ADORE it xx

Burpee’s are the worst! I didn’t know what they were (or at least that they were the new craze and that they had a name). I went to my favorite fitness class and left with SHREDDED QUADS!! Seriously, I did 80 burpees my first day. OYE! Hurt so bad. OK, 80 probably is nothing to you, but at the shape I was in at the time…it ruined me for about 4 days.

I can’t believe you got Billy to go with you to the soft porn movie I’ve been hearing about (kidding!!), I haven’t read the books or watched the movies, but I have a lot of housewife friends who get all hot and bothered over them…(not kidding!!)

Frankly, I don’t get it.

Mike agreed to go with me to the movies tonight, but I think if I suggest we go to the Twilight movie, he might laugh at me. Oh well.

I can’t remember the last thing I did out of my comfort zone unless you count speed work.

A couple of weekends ago I went to Fitness Fiesta which is a 3-day weekend in a holiday camp where they run back-to-back fitness classess Friday through Sunday. As it was my first Fiesta I decided to try something completely new…

Aqua Zumba!

I was totally out of my comfort zone, it was so awkward, noone could complete any of the moves and when we tried the moves there was about 15 seconds delay between the instructor and us because he was on the poolside and we had to deal with the drag of the water. Nightmare.

Saying that, it was SO much fun! Just imagine a swimming pool full of 50+ women all flailing their arms around and laughing hysterically.

That’s pretty much exactly how it went down!

Reply

Pahaha… just read that back! There were over 50 women in the pool, not all of the women were over the age of 50… awkwardddd.

There is a spinning place by my house that I like to go to every once in awhile. The workout is AMAZING and I feel great afterwards. Just talking about it makes me want to schedule another session, perhaps after Thanksgiving. I’m sure my waste will appreciate it. Unfortunately, my gym doesn’t offer classes and I haven’t found any other type of alternative workout place besides the spin place. Open to suggestions!!

Reply

I love body pump!!! I haven’t done it in 2 yrs though since we left FL. :( I work out alone all the time so I can’t say I’ve done burpees :/

Reply

HAHAHA. oh my gosh.. I adore, adore, adore that stupid burpees graphic. I hate them from my bangs to my toes and get so angry when a class forces me to do them. my life goal is to outlaw the darned things.

Reply

No, no, no – Team Edward!!! Especially with the sweet shirt you have :) I’m going tonight and wish I had that shirt…where did your sis get it? I’m hoping you say a national chain…

Reply

She got them in target! The sizes run super small so we couldn’t wear them though:(

Reply

Gotta admit… Team Edward! Not for the looks (sorry to all ya Edward ga-ga’s) but, vampires > werewolves, no?! I watched the first 3 Twilight movies over the past two weeks… I like the romance aspect but can’t seem to get into the vampire/ werewolf action :S

Reply

man burpess are brutal!! i need someone to get my butt out of bed that early to workout…love the shirt btw!

Team Jacob all the way:) Taylor Launter = amazing;)

An awesome super fit friend of mine invited me and my husband to her athletic club on guest day this past wednesday. She does a kettle bell class that she said is really good and we went with her. Wow… that was a lot harder than half marathon training, let me tell ya! 45 min of kicking my butt and every other muscle in my lower body!! I was awesome and only did the 5lb weights so my upper body does not hurt lol but what I really needed was the lower body workout and even tho my legs have been screaming at me for 2 days now – I was still able to run a 5k without knee pain yesterday and a lovely 1/2 mile after my 30 min on the elliptical. Hello squats and lunges, I hate you but you help me run so let us please be friends :)

… REALLY fun class if you have a chance to try it – awesome workout!

And we are going to see Breaking Dawn tomorrow night – my hubby read all the books years ago when I did just because he wanted to know what was absorbing that much of my attention haha. He has gone to every movie in the theatre with me. My friend from the gym story above might come with us because her hubby is totally NOT interested in anything to do with this series haha.

Reply

i took an ‘extreme athletic conditioning’ class (like boot camp) and holy cow…kicked my booty. but i kept up, and it was hella fun, and i was hella sore!
burpees make me wanna cry. they never get easier for me.

Reply

Just two weeks ago I did something I thought I would never ever try – I took a spinning class. Strangely, I didn’t get muscle fever in my legs (I did have some in my arms and shoulders though…. little weird, I know). And the best thing – I liked it enough to go again, and I’m hoping to make that a regular appointment.

Probably a little late for a movie suggestion, but I really like “The Big Easy”. Have seen that I don’t know how often, it never gets boring. And I can also highly recommend “Cookie’s fortune”. No, it’s not about me ;). Unfortunately somebody borrowed my DVD and I can’t remember who did :(
