Tomato Face and Race Photos.

33 minutes of running baby.  No leg pain when I land mid-food and barely brush my heel on the ground but anytime I land heel first….oucharama. Overall, this is a good thing because it is going to FORCE me to have better form and therefore I will be speedier than before:)

Even though my leg felt great mis muscles and mis lungs HURT (like I said before, I LOVE that feeling) but I am remembering that it is TOUGH to start running.  Yes, I did hours of other forms of cardio but running is a whole other ball game.

My students were confused about why I have turned from a drill sargeant to Mother Teresa while they were running the mile and it is because now I know what it feels like to be grasping for every last oxygen molecule in the atmosphere but I am LOVING the challenge.  Bring it on.

IMG 0001

Recycled post-run photo: my face was 8 times more red than this one today and I was embarrassed (which is saying a lot because I post EVERYTHING on the blog) and plus I was already 4 minutes late to work because a certain somebody decided to hit the snooze button 6 times……I guess going to bed at 8:30 pm is still not early enough for this g-ma.

*****Side Note for those of you that are injured.  LISTEN to the doctor/pt that you are working with and TAKE A BREAK!!! Believe me, my treadmill and the sunny weather called my name many times to join them for my choice of drugs (endorphins) but sometimes you just gotta say NO.

You know it is a good day when a student brings you your favorite salad in the whole wide world from cafe rio.

During lunch I locked my door, turned on some ‘Adele,’ ate my salad and for a second I really thought I was in heaven (except for the fact that I am out of Swedish Fish).    Mom, you can take that as a hint if you want.

We got some AWESOME race photos to admire:)  Sit back, enjoy and let the good times roll.

Heidi @runaroundaroosent in a picture of what she wore at the Minneapolis Monster Dash Half Marathon on Halloween weekend this past year.  She said it was SUPER comfy and got tons of compliments.  The best part is that she didn’t have to buy anything to put this outfit together!! LOVE IT GORGEOUS GIRL, you are looking mighty fine!

The GORGEOUS MADDIE sent in a picture of her and her husband running the Boston “Common Man’s Marathon” which is 2.62 miles around Boston commons.  “It was fun, although we had to run up the same hill THREE times. Killer (his face in the picture of us at the finish line tells all). But we were happy to be finished.”

Cmmfinish

The BEAUTIFUL Carla @irunyourun sent in a picture of her finishing her FIRST marathon last year (she did her second marathon 3 weeks later!!) She is the one in the pink with her arms up.  I LOVE IT!!!

I have parent teacher conference after school until 6 and then I teach spin at 6:30…….we will see how this works out.  Nothing wrong with wearing a skirt to teach a cycling class right?

Check out the AMAZING JULIA’S GIVEAWAY!!! You will fall in LOVE with her and her blog!!!

Do you push the snooze button on your alarm clock? If yes, how many times on average?

-Yep, poor Billster.  On average only twice but this morning was another story.

What was the hardest part for you when you first started running?

-Breathing.  I felt like my heart was beating 220 beats per minute and like I needed an oxygen mask.

Did you have to run the mile for PE in jr. high or high school?  Did you love it or hate it?

-My students HATED it at the beginning but now that they are seeing improvements in their times and how they feel they are loving it.

Do you eat lunch with your co-workers?

-Usually yes but today I wanted to just sit and savor each bite without any interruptions, wow I am cool.

I know being on the "injured list" for running totally sucks. You are doing really great about staying positive! You are an amazing example :)

In middle school we had a choice between PE and Aerobics — I chose Aerobics and loved it! In high school, I got away with an online PE class — kid you not!!! They would say "run a mile" and I'd email back that I did it lol.

I've recently started running and have to agree with you about the breathing!!!

EEEEEEEEKKKK!! thanks for posting my giveaway!! you are super awesomely amazing :)

i cant believe your student brought you a cafe rio salad for lunch!!! are you kidding me!?! maybe I am in the wrong profession!

I LOVE the snooze button but it also makes me nervous because I usually accidentally end up just turning it off completely and then oversleeping…oops!

I had to run the mile in elementary school and I still have PTSD from it. I seriously thought that running that far was child abuse…I mean seriously…it was 2 WHOLE LAPS around our school and that seemed REALLY far.

SO PUMPED for your running!! way to go! I definitely can relate to how tough it is to breathe again…a few weeks off does not seem that long but apparently to our lungs it is!

I will mention your giveaway tonight in my post :)

have a good evening! I need to try out your spin class soon…like in the next week or so hopefully!

Yay for 33 mins!! I am coming tonight and I can't wait to see you!! Your students are AMAZING…a Cafe Rio Salad? HEY YO!! that is the best thing ever. I am so glad you're healing!! I love you darling! I will see you in a few short hours YAY!

I've been blog stalking you for a while now because I secretly want to be a runner. My first day of treadmill running was yesterday and the hardest part was getting over the fear of falling off and dying…that and breathing.

I can sypathize with the tomato face as that is my permanent color while working out.

Also, I LOVE the snooze button. My snooze is only 4 minutes so I like to hit it hard. (That's what she said)

Every time i have to start running again i use it as an opportunity to create a new relationship with running. I try not to compare it to past running relationships, but just make this one unique and embrace it for the potential it will hold.
When I go through a period where it seems like I am always eating on other people's schedules, or what other people want……I find it it, like you said, a little slice of heaven to eat alone!

Reply

For me it was defs breathing too!! I used to get the WORST side stitches in. the. world. I agree, running is a whole other ball game! When I was injured I was biking an hour and a half a day but when I started running again I thought I was dying. A step at a time I guess:)

Giiirl you have THE best students in the world!! Actually, one day I hope that my college students (future obvs) will bring me delicious salads!! I should start bringing my teachers food hahah they would probably like that:) Maybe it is a good way to get better grades?!

p.s. I hit the snoozy WAY too much. I need to get to bed earlier too, I am SUCH a granny grans

Yayyyy, you're running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I seriously *hated* the mile run in PE. I couldn't understand why in the world my gym teachers wanted me to get sweaty and then have to go to class! Sure you change clothes, but you can't fix a sweaty head/red face!

I'd have to agree that the hardest part of starting to run is the whole breathing aspect of it. It was like, as soon as you start, your lungs feel like they can't get enough air…but eventually it's not your lungs. Instead you've run 20 miles at a conversational pace, but your legs feel like they're jello and start cramping!

I'm such a snoozer!!! Bad habit!!!!

Reply

On the injured list but getting better. How do you know when it is time to stop PT? I can feel it making a difference but I am craving the gym. With a busy schedule, I have to pick one over the other. Oh and I HATED the mile run in PE. Asthma and humid VA weather are not my friend. I think I would talk my teacher into letting me do the bike instead *oops* Now I wish they would have taught me HOW to run with asthma…still working on that

Reply

I'm so excited for you and your red face! Yay! I'm so glad you're running again!
So if you're not technically seeing anyone for an injury… does that mean you can cheat? Just kidding! I know better!
I don't have an alarm. I have a husband that tells me when it's time to get up!
Have fun at parent teacher conferences and then at spin! Wish I was going with you!

SOOO ridiculous, but I COULD NOT RUN in Junior High/High School. Running that mile killed me every time. I can remember exactly how uncomfortable I felt then and how bad my throat would burn! Funny how things change right? OMG, that is so crazy to even think about.

My friends from back then don't even know what to do with me now. :)

I totally eat by myself at lunch because I need some ME time! Haha, my office is so noisy I need some quiet time! :)

Reply

Janae – you are so awesome! I'm proud of you for taking the time off and being able to slowly get back into running. Keep it UP! I'm not a snoozer, but Billy is. I loved running the mile in elementary school – I was a fast kid! I love to eat lunch outside, so sometimes I'm by myself, but I don;t mind a bit! I love me-time. :)

Reply

I hated the mile in middle/elementary school!! But now I love running :) And often, I eat by myself to savor the food that much more–so cool, I know! ha

Reply

The hardest part for me when I started running was the pain in my legs! If I take too much time off, I still get that feeling, and it reminds me of just starting out.

Reply

That salad looks amazing.

Reply

I HATED the mile. So much, in fact, that I managed to only run it twice in all of my time in public school.

The hardest thing for me when I started running was getting terrible muscle cramps in my shoulders. Turned out I needed a better bra and to slow down a little.

My husband is my alarm clock, so no snooze button. Sometimes I wonder if his nose is a secret snooze button, but I think he'd be mad if I tried to hit it.

Reply

Glad you've been able to run some more! Hope the pain goes away soon! :D
Your salad looks delicious by the way…I now wish there was a Cafe Rio in Brazil. hahaha

Reply

Glad you were able to run!!!!! I want some of that salad!!! I am the queen of the snooze button!! I LOVE IT!

When I picked up running after a two month hiatus it was absolute torture! I could run for 30 minutes MAX. But I loved every second of it :)

When I am a teacher I hope my students bring me food lol

Reply

Woohoo for no leg pain! That's awesome!!!! You are so awesome for listening to your PT. I've been injured a couple of times and it is soooo tempting to just ignore the docs and try to "speed" up your recovery aka run before you should. You should be so proud of yourself for sticking to their plan for you!

I have never hit the snooze…ever. Amazing, I know. Honestly, even I don't understand how I do it.

Reply

I have been listening to Adele all day! I am sure we were separated at birth.

I will vote for you if you promise to shave your arm pits–ew =)
Actually, I already voted for you b/c your blog is funny & unique!
Good luck and good health in/for the upcoming marathons.
God bless you!

I actually am not a snoozer. Once I wake-up I am up for the day. Therefore Jay's snoozing habit is a bit annoying.

Two days before I found out I was pregnant I ran a half marathon, after I got the positive prego test I almost completely stopped working out for the next 9 months. Two weeks after the delivery date, I was hitting the pavement…two miles. I literally thought I would die. Starting up on running is sooooo hard!!! But it gave me such an appreciation for people that are trying to lose weight/run for the first time. I kept at it daily because, as much as it sucked, I knew that soon it would feel GREAT! If you've never gotten that GREAT feeling from running, I imagine it is hard to stick through the god-awful part.

Congrats to you for listening to your pt and happy RUNNING!

Reply

Wow that is a funny question. I actually ran a 12:08 mile in middle school. This summer when I ran the first 2 miles in 12:07, it was the most satisfying experience ever. ever ever.

Reply

I love that 80s running outfit, I wanna do a costume race!
I hated the mile up until 7th grade, then my friend & I used to actually try and race each other. Plus, we beat some of the boys, which was a big deal!

Reply

hardest part: breathing..not getting side pain after 2 minutes.

in HS we had to do a 5k. I hated every second of it. I run that distance faster now then I did 25 yrs ago!!! ha ha!

Reply

If I miss more than 4-5 days of running it's like going back to square 1. My leg muscles will be sore for days and days and my lungs feel like they are going to collapse when I am running. I hate that you can lose stamina so fast.

I love hitting the snooze button. I have to do it at least once. On days where I don't have to get up for anything too important I could easily push it more than 5 times.

Reply

I'm ECSTATIC that you were able to run that long! And you're right. That forced midfoot strike will definitely benefit you!

I seriously wish that we had a PE teacher that would have made us do something, oh, I don't know… PHYSICAL. (That is still what the P stands for, right?) In junior high we played kickball every day, and in high school we only had ONE SEMESTER of PE. And it was a total joke. Volleyball? Bowling? I loved it then, but it makes me sick now seeing all these fat kids knowing they aren't getting the proper EDUCATION. (That is still what the E stands for, right?)

Reply

Oh my goodness! YAY for running! You're amazing.

Reply

Oh me oh my that cafe rio salad looks delicous. It has been way too long since I have engaged upon that amazingness. Yummy!

I literally push my snooze button about 8 times every morning. I set my alarm way early on purpose because I know I will push it at least 1 million times.

Hardest part about running is definitely breathing especially in this thick utah air. blah!

Good luck with your long day girl. You are a super hero!

Reply

Did you know they don't even necessarily make kids run the mile anymore!? I mean I hated it in school and thought my pe teachers were the worst, but it's like a rite of passage!

I don't eat lunch with coworkers because I use my break to take a walk with my pup and then eat while working.

Reply

I usually hit the snooze button 4 or 5 times. Getting up in the mornings is SO hard for me.
I know it's going to be really hard for me when I get to run again (after almost 4 months) but I will take the burning chest and muscles. I seriously can't wait. 27 days!!! It's not like I'm counting down or anything.

Reply

Yummy looking salad! So congrats on the leg feeling great!! I never push snooze…NEVER! It makes getting up so much harder for me. I also never set an alarm clock because the dog gets up at exactly 7 am.

Reply

I am pathetic at waking up in the morning…I'm not even going to say how many times I hit the snooze because it's gross.

I think breathing was definitely the hardest part for me. It takes some time to build up that cardiovascular endurance! …and I'm doing it all over again! It's crazy how much you can lose in just a couple weeks.

I actually LOVED running the mile in HS because it was a race for me. Ha. I always lost too the same girl…Every. Time. I might have hated her a little bit. LOL.

My boss buys myself and my co-workers lunch everyday. So YES! We eat lunch together every single day. At our desks. :)

Reply

Snooze- yes. once or twice, 5 min apart.

Hardest part of running- I focused too much on my breathing, which was fast, and then that made me more worked up! So I listened to music when I first started running to distract me from the sound of my breathing. Once I had it down, I stopped w/the music.

Mile/PE- I vaguely remember having to do it; I didn't love it. I also seemed to have gym first period a lot which meant the grass was dewy and my your feet always got wet.

Lunch w/coworkers- yes, when there's time. Many days lunch is at my desk while writing reports, IEPs, checking work email, etc.

Reply

Girl, your red face is nothing, mine is OUT OF CONTROL after I run!

I'm trying harder to strike midfoot, but I'm TERRIBLE at it…takes lots of practice!

Reply

Ok, so I teach a 6 week endurance clinic focused on running. It takes 6 weeks to teach the proper way to run because you are right the landing is SOOO important!! Anyway, we teach pose running which really focuses on a mid-foot strike. Landing on your heels and toes is just so hard on your body mile after mile.

SO glad you are able to start running again. Keep it up girl!!!

Reply

how sweet of your student :) i don't snooze but my husband's alarm always goes off 5 min after mine so maybe that counts :)

Reply

speaking of tomato face, i got a good joke for you… get ready, get ready…ooooppp here it comes:
Why was the tomato blushing?? -because he saw salad dressing :) hehe.

So, I am laying here with a little injury of my own…wanting to run and instead reading running blogs. Came across yours…good to read the "don't run..listen to your dr. and pt!" that will keep me resting for at least another couple days! thanks!

Reply

I push the alarm at least once… sometimes more. Sometimes I roll out of bed when I hear my roommate leave. We're both teachers but at different schools… my school is 15 minutes further away than hers. It's safe to say that I am NOT a morning person!

Right now (I'm still a newbie) my biggest struggle is finding a consistent pace. I feel better when I go faster and I think I have better form but I can only run for a few minutes before I have to stop and take a breather. Any advice??

My team (8 4th grade teachers) all eat lunch together and we will cherish every last day this year because next year we're all be split up and sent to different schools in our school district :(

Reply

YAY for your run! :) So happy for your progress!

I'm goint to have to scout out a Cafe Rio! The salads look great!! How sweet of your student to be soo thoughtful!! He/she gets an A+ for sure!! Way better than the standard apple!!

hardest part for me when I first started running was def. breathing!!

Loved the mile during my school daze!! :)

HAVE A GREAT EVENING!!

I hated running in school, probably why i don't do it now.
I used to eat lunch with co-workers every day, now I eat with a cute little 3 year old :)

Congrats that you have started running again! It's hard to come back from an injury. Being patient is so important. Like you said, no need to re-injure yourself.
I LOVE the snooze button. Unfortunately my husband does not. So, 13 years ago I had to stop snoozing and get up right away so I didn't fall back to sleep. I miss you snooze button!
The hardest part of running for me when I first started was just finding a rhythm and my stride. Now the first mile is usually the hardest and I think it's still just about settling into a rhythm. Love it!
When I was working I used to eat with my coworkers most days. Once a week or so I'd stay in my classroom and eat alone. Just for a few moments of silence! Now I barely stop to eat b/c as soon as I get the kids started on a meal they are finished and moving onto the next thing. I often eat while I'm cleaning up from them so I can referee the next activity!

Reply

I have a terrible habit of pushing the snooze button at least 5 times every morning. I guess it's no surprise that I'm usually running a little late.

Breathing was definitely a hard part of starting running. But for me my mind would want to keep going but my legs couldn't keep up. It took a long time to find balance.

I was supposed to run the mile every year in high school, but I just walked. If my P.E. teachers knew how much I love running now they'd laugh uncontrollably.

I try to eat lunch with my coworkers but it isn't always possible.

Reply

It's so hard to get started! I have asthma and I have really been struggling to get to the point where breathing is not an issue and I can really enjoy running! Humbling!

And I snooze 3-4 times minimum daily…terrible habit but I love it :)

Reply

Snooze – 3-4 times

As a former PE teacher, my students moaned and groaned when I said "we are going to run a mile". Most of them ran/walked it, which I was okay with because they were doing something versus nothing. I hated doing it in HS, so I was able to empathize with them :)

Reply

– Hardest part is the first 15-20 minutes, after that everyting falls into place

Reply

Every time I workout, my face is so red. I hate it when people see that I am dripping sweat and they still ask me if I just worked out (while I'm still at the gym).

Reply

Girl, I just love you! I think you are amazing! Have I told you enough?! I hope you don't get sick of it…because I will tell you often :)
That is awesome that your student brought you food!! Brownie points for sure :)
I don't hit the snooze button- I just never got in the habit of doing it…& I have Craig that goes with me to the gym- so when he gets up, I'm up too :)
YES- I remember running the mile- I actually LOVED it- because my running obsesssion started early ;) – but I know most kids HATED it.
I hope you have a good day!!!! :)

Reply

Great post! Way to stay positive about things. That is the ONLY way!!

I don't normally hit snooze but I did 2 times this morning! Weird!!!

Breathing and pacing were the toughest things for me. I thought I had to run flat out to be "running."

I did have to run it back in the day and I didn't mind.

I eat lunch with my co-workers almost every day unless I have a family or an agency visiting one of my students.

Reply

i love your attitude. seriously. you're being smart about injury and trusting that it's going to make you even faster. you are my running idol.

Reply

yay! thanks for posting my picture! i feel so legit now ;)

I love the snooze button. I set my alarm early so that I can snooze at least once (usually twice). It's totally a mental game, but it's just too hard to get up the first time the alarm goes off.
