Tuesday Tangents + 1st One Back

(shoes, shirt, shorts, socks)
(Above picture was not from my actual run yesterday, but I was wearing basically the same thing, and it was a much prettier picture than the streets in the dark yesterday;)

A run with Emilee to start my week with a hamstring that loved me again.

It was just Beck and me for a few hours.
Beck is always extremely good at letting us know how he feels through his facial expressions.

I thought about what we should eat for dinner hours before dinner rather than five minutes before dinner like I usually do. Chicken tortilla soup and rolls!

————————————————————————

Time for a few tangents:

*Because my run felt so good yesterday, I have been tempted to run CIM or any other marathon within the next few weeks. But then I looked at this picture, and it reminded me how back-to-back marathons went for me… but maybe it would be different?

*It’s almost impossible to be inside when the sun is out these days. I just realized that these two will be at high school together in less than four years.

*My other niece will be in college in less than two years, and I can’t handle this information.

*The cinnamon roll blondies mix from Trader Joe’s = 10/10, and my sister gave them the same rating.

*I’m really into cinnamon rolls, as you can tell, and I had to tell you that this is amazing on toasted bread.

*It is officially soup season, so I thought I would share my top 10 favorite soup recipes HERE! And if you haven’t tried chicken noodle soup on top of homemade mashed potatoes, I will need you to do that.

*Connor Mantz just ran the second-fastest debut American marathon for the men.  Connor was my nephew’s roommate a few months ago which makes us basically friends;)

*Guess how many games of Candyland were played yesterday? Hint–> _ _ _

If you could only have one type of soup for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Who has done back-to-back marathons, and how did it go?

-I think if I raced one and took the other easy, I could do it but racing both in a row was hard for me!

Who was the last person you ran with?

Give me a tangent for the day!

I love soup, but it makes our kids sad so we don’t eat it very often.

The only time I did back-to-back marathons (three weeks apart) was the time when I had to stop at mile 20 of the first race because of breathing problems (turns out I had bronchitis, so…). My coach said to treat it like a race-pace 20-miler and find a new goal race, which I did, and it worked! But I couldn’t imagine RACING 26.2 miles close together.

I really hope that your kids start loving soup this season. BRONCHITIS. Oh my goodness! I love that it worked out and you had your awesome race three weeks later. Thanks for sharing and I hope your Tuesday is off to a great start, Margie!

Only one soup! Hard question 🤔 But think it would be roasted butternut squash for me.

I definitely haven’t run two marathons close together but recently when I am in debate between my mind and my body, which often happens as I have all the plans and want to do all the things, I find a minute or two to stop and find a quieter place. I place my hand on my body, e.g. my heart or stomach, and tell my body I love it, I want the best for it and what does it need. Then I just listen to my body for that minute or two. Sometimes the answer is loud and clear and sometimes it takes a few days to get a sense of what is best. Someone once said to me “the most qualified expert on you is you”. So I believe your expertise will make the best decision for you 🙂

There is just something magical about roasted butternut squash soup and now I need some.

Okay, that paragraph you just wrote made my eyes tear up. That is beautiful and I will be doing this in my closet often now. Thank you for sharing this with us. What an impact this will make on my life! Have the most beautiful day, Jessy!

after meeting tons of people in chicago who just came back from Berlin or just heading to DC or New York you can totally run CIM in December if you do it smartly and maybe just run it and see how you feel because it’s in December you can totally knock out another training cycle by then. I say go for it

WOW. Those people are amazing! That sounds like so much fun. Maybe I will see how a few long runs go at the end of this month and November and then make the decision! PS did you run Chicago and if you did, how did it go?

Reply

Oh MY goodness. Chicago is the most amazing experience. It was my first and now my 5th and probably last marathon. The crowds, the course, the spectators. i honestly could have run so much faster if I had paid attention to the run and a little less to the wonderful experience I was having. I know it’s really close to St. George but you should try one year. You would absolutely FLY. I’ve done New York twice and Marine Corp also but Chicago has my heart.

This. Makes. Me. So. Happy! I am SO happy you had such a great experience. Congratulations and I really need to make it to Chicago instead of St. George one of these years! Happy recovering!

Chicken tortilla soup, specifically the recipe from Half Baked Harvest. It’s so good!

I ran with my new friend Emily this morning- she is up for running at 5:30 am which a lot of my friends aren’t haha.

Glad you are resting and recovering post marathon! That will be me next week after my half.

Reply

I will have to try her recipe next time, thank you! YAY for having a new friend to meet in the mornings especially one that fits with your schedule. That makes me so happy! Thank you and good luck, so excited for you!

I’m actually making crockpot chicken tortilla soup today! I love soups, so that is a very hard question… Just one soup? Hmmmm. Probably a really good homemade old fashioned chicken noodle.
I think the reader who said the best expert on you is you, is so right. You know your body, you listen to your body. If you want to run CIM and everything is feeling good, then go for it! Otherwise, train to crush Boston!
I love spending time outside this time of year. Cool-ish in the morning, warm (but not hot) in the afternoon. Doing anything and everything as much as possible outside.
Off to the gym for a couple of Peloton runs and my favorite Barre class.
Have a great day Janae 😊

Enjoy your chicken tortilla soup, I am already excited to eat it for lunch today! It really is so true, nobody can make these decisions for us because we know ourselves the best. Thank you, Wendy! Have the best time with your runs and Barre class (I want to come)! Thanks friend, you too!

My Dad makes me Paleo Chili for the winter and it is very good. Just meat, veggies and tomatoes.
I did a marathon and then a 30 mile Ultra six years ago back to back and it went really well. I am doing that again this year, a little unconventional Ultra training but it’s fun.
The last person I ran with was at my last race haha, I don’t know anyone who runs where I live.
Since I am at work the amount of tangents I could type would be a novel cause work stress, blah…..
But the retail therapy of Prime Days is helping!

Reply

I love that your dad makes that in the winter, sounds delicious and hearty! That is amazing… you have to let me know how it goes this year! Cheering for you, ultras are no joke! You have to tell me good finds… enjoy the retail therapy, you deserve it. I hope things at work calm down soon. Dawn, if you ever come to Utah then I will run with you!

In 2011 (so many years ago when I was younger), I ran NYC in the beginning of November and then Philly a few weeks later. Running two marathons a season seems nice because you feel like you are getting a lot of bang for your buck since you only really have one training cycle. I will say though that I remember I didn’t love those three weeks in between.

I love any kind of soup! My kids LOVE tomato soup which seems weird to me because that has always been my least favorite!

Reply

WOW. NYC and Philly… that is amazing. It’s very true, I kind of feel like I didn’t get to put out everything I had?!? I don’t know! I’m with your kids… a good creamy tomato soup is amazing. I hope your day is off to a great start!

You’re killing me with the cinnamon! I forgot to go to TJ’s over the weekend :(
Candyland games = a jillion (that has 3 digits, right?)
I did back to back marathons several years ago. In the first one, I bonked, so I was far off of the pace that I had perfectly trained for and it felt more like a training run. In the second (2 weeks later), I was very much closer to my goal pace and hit a PR.
Tangent to your tangent about Beck: my daughter’s preschool teacher wrote that she “never had to wonder how Kendal is feeling.” LOL! She always showed it :)

Reply

Now you need to go to TJ’s this weekend and enjoy all of the cinnamon roll goodness. Hahah it definitely feels like a jillion. Oh I love that you had that option to go back and try again and then get that PR. Hahaha Kendal and Beck would be best friends and they wouldn’t even need to say a word. That is hilarious and I wonder if Kendal still does that?! Hope your day is a beautiful one!

I love TJ’s tomato + roasted red pepper soup! with cheese on top :) The nearest TJs is about 1.5 hours away so we rarely go, but we are supporting a friend running a marathon this weekend nearby, so now I can’t wait to buy everything! The blondies and spread are now at the top of my list– lmk if there’s anything else I should add!!!!! PLEASE!

Tangent– I’m so glad Beck says no as much to you as my son Enso does to me hahaha! or when Enso says NO! but then reaches to eat whatever I’m offering LOL. It’s like he’s just programmed to say it without thinking it through. Have a wonderful day, Janae! You always brighten my days :)

Reply

I love that soup from TJ’s so much too… the cheese is a must. Basically anything fall/Halloween at TJ’s is a must right now. I could spend way too much money there. Hahaha Enso and Beck would be best friends. They truly get such joy from showing off their autonomy by saying NO to us even if it’s not what they want haha… thank you for sharing!

Gosh I am not a soup eater so the answer is easy- Campbells Tomato from a can.

I think the question to ask yourself about CIM is- what exactly would be different this time? You had good reasons for deciding not to do it. Have those changed? If so… go for it!

Reply

Okay, that is the question that needs to be asked. My hamstring is feeling happy again which is a major change but do I have the energy for it? Maybe I should just try a few workouts and see?!? Hope your morning is off to a beautiful start and I’ll eat all of the soup for you!

Chicken noodle soup over mashed potatoes sounds so interesting but also the perfect cozy dinner on a cool night! Will need to try it out next time I make chicken noodle soup.

Tangent for today – shopping for a good cordless vacuum is so hard! I’m researching so many and it’s insane to me how many exist.

Reply

Seriously, you have to try it and then report back. Let me know if you find a great one… we love our dyson! Happy Tuesday, Maureen!

Tangent: I actually searched for you favorite soup recipe blog the other day because I was hosting and remembered you wrote that blog.
Proof, I cannot ever have you stop writing this blog. ;)

Erica, I’m never leaving you! EVER! And the same goes to you!

Hi Janae! I love soup season! I love one pot meals and meals that you cook once and get leftovers for so soup is perfect!
Some of my running group taught me how to knit! So I’m excited about that too.
Have a great day!

Reply

I’m already drooling for my leftovers! I LOVE that they taught you how to knit. I love knitting so much too. Send me pics of your creations. Thanks Amy! You too!

Ran Chicago this weekend in the tracksmith shorts you recommended and they did not disappoint! I was deciding between them and a pair of black shorts I always wear and decided to take your recommendation as I have been so inspired by your blog over the years and felt like it would be a reminder of all of your wisdom! Thanks for coming with me on a glorious run!!

Reply

Congratulations!!! You are amazing! So so happy you loved the shorts!
