(Shirt, leggings, shoes)

Twelve miles @ 8:32 pace, and I’m feeling spoiled this winter with clear roads most days.  We dropped our friend off to her finals for her MBA program and explored BYU campus a bit.

The winter sunrises make waking up early worth it.

Let’s get right into the tangents for today:

*Many of you told me to read Winter Garden next, so I went to the bookstore to grab it.  I appreciate your help; I get so sucked into her books that I forget to take care of my own basic needs, haha.

*I was getting a little sick of the banana taste in my smoothies, so my sister told me to add frozen blueberries and throw an entire lemon into the blender.  It tastes like frozen lemonade now;). I’m not sure how I used to ask my body to run the mileage I do in marathon training without the nutrients I’m trying to get in each day, but it’s all part of the journey of learning what our bodies need to feel and run their best.

*I loved this episode with CJ Albertson and Citius Mag and learning about why he did three marathons in 40 days.  He also talked about his training for the trials, and I am pretty sure I would pass out trying to walk in these conditions.  As part of his training he runs on his treadmill with heat lamps pointed at him and pots of boiling water next to him to prepare for the heat and humidity of Florida.  Can you even imagine?

*The crib tent has brought back Beck’s much-needed naps.  He is up to 6 books that are a must-read before his naps.  How can you say no to a child asking for one more book?  I cannot.

*Any other adults find themselves playing rock paper scissors to attempt to get out of doing tasks they do not want to do?

*Sure, I have time goals for Seville, but I also have hair goals, and that is for Brooke to learn how to French braid my hair like this for the race:

*Seville will be my 20th marathon and my first time trying out salt capsules.  I’ve never had them before and think I need to because Seville is likely much warmer than Utah.  Lauren is bringing me one of these to try today before my workout.   I don’t sweat a ton, but because I use Maurten gels, I’m not getting all of the sodium that I need, and maybe these will do the trick…

*Speaking of Lauren, it’s supposed to be 37 degrees for our workout, which obviously means sports bra weather for us;)

*My race shoes have arrived!  I had a family member who was able to get me one pair for 50% off, which makes me feel like they are extra lucky.

Ha ha ha…. 37° I would be bundled up! It needs to be in the mid 60’s for me to be in a tank top/sports bra.
I have never tried salt tablets, but have a friend (who has run over 20 marathons) who uses them all the time.
A fun tangent for this morning…. One of the news channels is here to talk to my neighbor about the history of our neighborhood Sparkle balls at Christmas. It will be cool to see it in the actual news
Taking my son’s girlfriend to LAX (it’s 5:15am) for her to go home for Christmas. It’s been a while since I’ve made an early airport trip like this.
Have a good day Janae!

One of my friends was completely bundled up today, I like 5 more layers than me ha. NO WAY! Oh I want to watch the segment, your neighborhood is amazing. I bet she was so grateful for you to take her. Have the best day, Wendy!

Salt tabs will be so helpful in combination of Maurten! I would imagine you’ll feel better after the runs, too.
I listen to UpFirst from NPR every morning otherwise I listened to The Daily about Taylor Swift. Oh wait, actually Armchair Anonymous Holiday Vacation episode. Anywho-all of those have been recently played. ha
Tangent: last night we had Christmas trivia at our run club dinner. Your family would have dominated after your movie marathon this weekend. I surprisingly did well and maybe because it started with Home Alone trivia.
Enjoy the warm weather! hehehe

YES… I just need to figure out which ones and how often! I want to join you in UpFirst each morning and I’ll listen to that Taylor episode during laundry… oh and the Holiday Vacation one haha. Congrats on doing so well in the trivia. Thank you, Molly! The warmth defrosted my cold heart haha. Hope your day is a gorgeous one!

Salta tabs are amazing! I started taking them about 4 years ago but mainly because I have Addison’s (so don’t retain salt.) If you end up using them, get the flavored kinds! They taste like Sweet Tarts and are easy to eat mid-run!!

I used salt tabs for my long runs and when I ran the NYC marathon. At the time Gatorade was not my tummy’s friend and I needed an alternative. They worked great for me. I took them each water stop. I’d probably never train in the summer without them.

Reply

I am so glad that the salt tabs helped you! I always wonder if Gatorade is my friend or not…
So you took 6ish throughout the course?
Just trying to figure this out. Thanks Jacinta, have a beautiful day!

I took them every time I would normally get the sports drink at a water stop. Drank water at the stops with the salt tabs and good to go. There are also dissolving chewable ones if swallowing during a race seems questionable lol.

Thank you for the help! I needed this!

“I don’t sweat a ton” is a phrase I’ve never been able to use! I’ve had to learn that I need more salt than the average Joe because . . . I am also sweatier than the average Joe. I always buy the salted version of anything (eg salted chocolate protein bars, etc., instead of regular ones) and add a lot of extra salt to my meals when I’m training a lot!

Reply

Hahah maybe I’m more of a medium sweater! I need to start adding more salt to my meals too, thanks for that tip. And a good sweat makes me feel so bad a for working hard so I hope you feel that too! Have a beautiful day, Kristin!

Tangent: Enso was in the Christmas pageant last night and I completely cried when I saw him all dressed up (“fancy clothes!”). It was so sweet; they had the littles singing “This Little Light of Mine.”
Last podcast: probably Armchair Anonymous (the Friday release from Armchair Expert). The stories from listeners make me crack up, cringe, and every emotion in between! I also love Smartless, TBOY, and Lovett or Leave It.
I used to wear sports bras but have gotten self conscious. That’s a good new-year’s resolution! Feel confident to rock the cropped tank/ sports bra again! Have a most wonderful day, Janae!

Salt pills for sure! They saved my longer races.

Well it is about 6 degrees Celsius and I definitely could have run in a sports bra.

Currently reading a book by Rupert Ross called Indigenous Healing exploring traditional paths. Just started but looking like a good read and interesting.

Just trying to get through a few more days before I am on holiday but working from home this week so that helps!

My girl friend talked me into 17 miles versus my planned 10 last weekend and it’s been awhile since I have done that mileage so body feels it haha.

Have a great day Janae!

Wow, that book sounds amazing! Keep enjoying and I love that she talked you into 17 miles haha… sounds like me and my friends! I hope your day is a great one, and you are almost on holiday break!

Do your kids have “The Napping House” by Audrey Wood? I just got it for my niece’s little boy – it’s my favorite book to read out loud to little ones.

I use Hammer Endurolytes. I’m a big fan of Endurolytes Extreme when I’m in Hawaii.

I love running when it’s in the 30s, but with quite a few more layers than you require!

Reply

We don’t but now I’m ordering it haha. Thanks for the help. Oh I bet you really need that when running in Hawaii! Hahaha the differences in outfits today at the track for the same workout were hilarious. Hope your day is a beautiful one, Kathy!

I’ve used salt tabs in the past with success. Something I learned that is important to be aware of is that they need an appropriate amount of fluid in order to be the most effective. Without that fluid, the pill is like a “bomb” of salt in your gut. The body will source the water it needs to take it in, and if you don’t provide it, it will draw it from your body tissues, which is actually dehydrating (and the opposite of what we intend when we take salt pills!).

SUCH a good point that I hadn’t thought about. Thank you thank you thank you for the help, Laura!

nope don’t wear a sport bra……lol…my tangent continues to be no motivation…after two weeks with this flu thing, I’m hoping running with my crew tomorrow evening will get me out of this funk…..
I’ve tried salt pills on a few triathlons. found they were easier to take while on the bike (everything’s easier to take on the bike….par boiled potatoes for instance) but, i hate taking anything on the run, even gels…..so that didn’t last long. as long as the hydration I use has electrolites I seem to be fine. someone once told me I don’t need as much as most experts tell me, and so far, he was right

Reply

Hahaha! So funny, Warren. I am SO sorry you had the flu! I really hope your run goes great tonight with your people. Thanks for the help!

Thanks to you, I discovered Kristin Hannah. I don’t think I’ve ever cried as much while reading… This week I just finished Magic Hour, which I really enjoyed, in case you need a few more options from her…

Are you adding the lemon and blueberries to the banana and mango that you used to add? Or, replacing them?

Reply

I like the chewable electrolytes better. Sometimes the capsules get stuck if my throat is dry and I take them on my run… but they make a world of difference to my muscles, they don’t get a crampy and stiff.

Reply

Ohhhhhhh that is so good to know! Thank you!!!!

I’m a very salty sweater, and live about an hour north of Houston so lots of heat and humidity. I’ve tried salt tabs, but haven’t quite figured them out. I have found that two scoops of scratch clear in a hand held that I sip on in the first 1/2-16 miles (until gone) has been awesome combined with Maurten (Ala featherstone nutrition). I do this during my Texas summer running and have done in it several marathons recently (including my 2:56, not your speed… but not walking either ;). Anyway, I’m not a gatorade fan and will incorporate it once my bottle is gone, but the skratch has worked well for me.

Reply

Ummmm your 2:56 is right with me woman! I appreciate this help so much, I’m going to try this!!!! Hope you are having a great evening and let’s run a marathon together!

Reply

That would be amazing!!

Reply

A whole lemon?! I have to try that! Lol
My all-time fave running podcast is Another Mother Runner :)

Reply

Hahah so much lemon and all of the vitamin C! Oh hers is so good. Hope your day is a beautiful one, Laura!

I use to get headaches after all of my long runs until I started taking those Saltcaps that you have and now I never do! Even drinking a mix of Gatorade and water during my runs and Gu before wouldn’t stop it. They haven’t been hard on my stomach and the results have been well worth it! I use them year round.

Reply

NO WAY! Oh I am so glad that you have figured it out. Thank you for sharing Robin!
