Perfectly cooked?! Try not to feel. Saturday 10 am- Monday 6 am.

(shorts, tank, bra, shoes, socks)

This workout really excited me because I wasn’t too far off from my paces last year for this same workout, and I felt really, really good. My buildup this year has been much shorter than last year, so I think I might be going into St. George perfectly cooked:).

We started with a 4-mile warm-up up the canyon, used the restrooms, and got ready to start the workout.

A kind samaritan helped me in the parking lot. My only caffeine gel wouldn’t open, so she let me use her car key to open it. This cannot happen during the marathon!

Our first interval was 10 miles long (we were going to do 3 x 5 miles but then switched it to 10 & 5), and the first 4 miles were very downhill and then pretty flat and some slight downhill (perfect for St. George training). I had two friends that I chatted with for the first 6 miles, and then they went ahead for the last 4. I probably could have gone up with them, but I wanted to stay at ‘marathon effort’ and not race this workout. I averaged a 6:13 (6:08 last year) and felt good. The biggest problem with this portion was running through a campsite with many fires, and my asthma went crazy with that. Luckily, it was short-lived, but wow, that smoke set things off.

I was happy to run into a group of friends at 9.85 miles into the 10-mile tempo.

Jess saved me with her Apple Pay on her phone and bought me a Gatorade at the gas station; I needed electrolytes. Maurtens don’t have enough electrolytes, and this saved me.

We ran easy for a mile and then set out for the 5-mile tempo through town, and somehow, we only had to stop at one light for 3 seconds. I was happy to manage a 6:17 average for this portion and felt strong.

A 2-mile cool-down and home by 9:30 to switch places with Andrew for his mountain biking adventure.

Twenty-two miles @ 6:56 pace with 1,116 ft up and 1,622 ft down. I finished my 4th 70-mile week and am happy to be in the taper. I have 60 miles this week.

PS reminding myself to stop thinking about how I was feeling worked wonders. I paid attention to not going too fast (and maintaining marathon effort), BUT the second I started thinking about anything going wrong… I told myself to try not to feel. THIS WORKS.

Andrew had donuts for us when I got home. Remember when I would only eat apple fritters?! I feel like I am not always choosing maple bars.

Andrew was able to mountain bike at Sundance.

And then, when he got home, we went to Brooke’s soccer game.

A date night on Saturday.

My favorite was the beet salad on the left, and the fried cheese curds (sounds weird but so good) dipped into tomato sauce.

The rest of the weekend was as relaxing as possible. I try to forget I’m a runner from Saturday at 10 am to Monday at 6 am because my brain needs a break from the training just as much as my body does.

Have a great Monday!

A 10 mile interval?? Wow. Great work!
I had a very good 4×2 mile long run this weekend. I shut the brain off, focused my eyes straight ahead and ran. And then went to work afterwards.
Highlight of the weekend? How do I not say Sepp Kuss winning La Vuelta??

Maybe cut a small notch in the sealed top part of your gels before the marathon, just to avoid even being worried that they won’t tear open? (ie get the tear started without actually opening the gel) That’s it for my unsolicited advice ;-)

Weekend highlight– I threw a birthday party for my bestie and it was so great. Amazing people, beautiful weather, and the food I made came out perfectly ( I did a make-your-own taco bar with tons and tons of toppings). It felt really good to do that for her. Have a great day, Janae! Happy Monday!

Your long run/ workout sounds awesome! It’s hard mentally for me to forget I’m a runner and I get crabby :)

My weekend highlight was a 6 hour trail race that I have done 3 years now with my husband and brother. You see how many of the 2 mile loops you can do in the 6 hours. I felt so great! I kept saying I would do just one more and ended up with 15 loops- 30 miles and was the top female looper! It was so fun and I can’t stop thinking about it! I ran 3 loops with my husband and brother, 3 loops with a friend, and 2 loops with my oldest son! I just loved it all!

Thank you, Carrie, and a 6-hour trail race!? Ummmm you are my hero, and you’ve done this three years in a row. That is incredible. TOP female looper. Unreal. Teach me your ways!

My highlight of the weekend is feeling like we are getting a solid routine in place for our 12 week old! Also, I just want to say I love your blog. It’s the highlight of my morning to read (after putting the baby down for her morning nap :)).

Alyssa, that is a good feeling. Routines are everything! And you just made my day. Thank you so so much. Have a beautiful day!

Awesome job on your long run! Your weekend looked like perfect weather too.
Highlight of the weekend was having almost fall like temps. So nice. And, I know this may sound weird, but getting the house cleaned felt so good!
I’m feeling motivated for the week, yay! Hoping to start getting my running schedule back on track and back into the grove.
Have a great Monday Janae.

Thank you! I want this weather to last forever and I am so glad you are having fabulous weather too. I want to enjoy the fruits of a clean house;). So happy you are back running and having a schedule, I love that feeling. You too!

You’re killing it on the long runs; can’t wait to see how St George goes!! I also agree with a comment or above, who suggested cutting a little bit on the top of the gel, because that was my thought when I was reading it to. Best part of the weekend for me was getting in a two hour Peloton ride between all the soccer games on Saturday and then getting to do a quick 8 mile run with a friend who’s in town from Utah. It’s the second time I’ve gotten to run with her this month which is so fun!!

SUCH a good idea, I’m totally going to try that. I would cry if I couldn’t get my caffeine in the middle of the race. Two hour Peloton ride, you are on fire. I’m so glad you guys got in a run together, there is nothing like a run with a good friend! Have a great day, Rachael!

Wondering if you read your blog from the user’s end? Long time follower, but I’ve given up in the last year because of the issues with your page. I can’t get through a single post without your page reloading itself multiple times (3 today). And my device gets hot anytime I read your blog. This only happens with your blog. I’ve also tried multiple devices and the same thing happens. I’m going to have to give up again even though I love your content. Wasn’t sure if you were aware.

Colleen! I feel so bad about this. I have had them add more ads over the years so that I could stop doing fully sponsored posts on here and maybe that is causing the delays and reloading. I will email with them today. I really apologize. My content also goes out through follow.it here: https://follow.it/ni?site=hungryrunngergirl.com#add-feature ! So if you sign up for that it will go through your email and then you can avoid the problems. BUT thank you for letting me know so I can have them work on things for me. Hope you have a beautiful day and thanks for being my friend over the years!

I have the same problem. I’m usually using my iPhone to read – don’t know if that makes a difference…. The ads can really mess up the screen and cause loading issues. I “suffer” through it because I reading your blog and look forward to it as a ray of sunshine in my day. I have been reading since before Brooke was born when the blog was different colors and fonts for each paragraph!

I’m from the Midwest and fried cheese curds are a fav! Especially dipped in Ranch!!

I’m super proud this weekend I ran my first 3.5 miles in probably years! And I felt great! 5 weeks from my first 10k race!

Reply

CATIE! I am proud of your weekend run too:). This makes me so happy and PLEASE let me know how your 10k goes. I’m thrilled for you.

Off to try ranch with them, they were so so good!

Yay for a great workout!!

We took our xc kids to Woodbridge to race this weekend. It’s the largest xc race in the west and it was a blast and so fun to see all of the talent out there.

I’ve typically done 2 week tapers, but I’m going to do a 3 week for my upcoming Big Bear race :)

I like the grape gatorade. Never will I ever drink the cherry frost again. I had to drink clear gatorade before a procedure, and suffice to say that it’s no longer something I enjoy. Ha.

-Blue… glacier freeze.

Do you feel like you need rest days more physically or mentally or equally?

The Frost gatorades are my favorite-particularly the light purple one. My kids like what you mentioned.

Yesterday my riding partner and I did the Rapha 100 ride in Munich. She talked me into it and it was very intimidating but I’m glad to have done it.

Maple bars are so dreamy.

My cross country girls were in so amped up to talk about the Diamond League final. They crack me up with their analysis and opinions. Teenagers keep you on your toes!

I love orange gatorade…….funny story from a decade ago, out for a 30 minute run that became 3 hours and 30 minutes…it happens, but a 7-11, my bank card, and Gatorade….
this weekend, worked a couple of races, one was called a NERD Run, the other a Terry Fox Run….we have them all over Canada every year, raises a lot of $$$ to help fight cancer. Gotta say, the Fox story, the man is held in high regard, and whenever someone asks who the best Canadian ever is, he’s always everyone’s first pick…..Rod Stewart has a song, never give up on a dream, “I just wish people would realize that anything’s possible if you try; dreams are made possible if you try.”

I’m doing a 3-week taper for Chicago so last week was my peak week (and highest mileage week ever – 71 miles!) I’ll admit I had to laugh at the idea of fried cheese curds as “weird”. You should come to Wisconsin, because they are on 95% of restaurant menus (and yes they are delicious!)
