Morning thoughts vs night thoughts, a race this month, and never too many…

(shorts, tank, shoes, bra)

Ten miles @ 8:19 pace with the girls.

I talked about this on my IG yesterday, but I find it pretty comical when I think about my morning thoughts vs. my night thoughts when it comes to running (ehhh, and most things in life). Before bed, I wonder why I signed myself up to run a marathon in 9 weeks. I wonder if I will possibly be able to make it through one of the workouts on my schedule and if I should retire and become a professional napper instead. And then, in the morning, my dreams get BIG. I’m thinking about new PRs and how many marathons are too many marathons to sign up for in 2024. The ups and downs are quite dramatic.

I’m very grateful that Andrew understands this about me, and reminds me of my morning brain when I’m telling him at night about how I am going to drop out of my next race;)

Speaking of races, I have a race in 18 days now. Run it with me, it’s in my favorite place to run–> Provo Canyon and you can sign up here!

Signing up for this race gave me a flashback to running the same course during August a decade ago. It was within weeks of filing for divorce, and I am pretty sure I cried for 10 of the 13 miles. I can’t wait to do it again a decade later after my whole world has changed since those days!

Back to the rest of our day…

There is no such thing as too many bubbles, in Skye’s opinion.

Brooke has the same opinion.

It definitely took Beck some time to warm up to the idea, but once he did, he was all about the bubbles.

Between marathon training mileage ramping and pmsing… I was needing a warm and extra delicious meal for lunch, and Thai was calling my name. Massaman will forever be my order at a Thai restaurant.

We then went to Sam’s Club, and Beck insisted on Skye carrying him.

I used the Sam’s Club pizza dough (sold at the food court frozen) for dinner to make pizza with tomatoes from a farmer’s stand. The difference between farm-fresh tomatoes and grocery-store tomatoes is quite startling.

They consider him their favorite jungle gym.

Been sipping on this daily to get me through seventy miles this week including two speed workouts and two days on the trails. Code: HUNGRY-RUNNER-GIRL will get you 25% off and free shipping HERE!

Do you notice a big difference in your night vs. morning running thoughts?

-Andrew is the opposite of me in the timing of these feelings, but he has them too with his biking–> Big goals at night and little desire in the morning.

Thai food… what is your order?

Who has a race, birthday, or anniversary this month?

-BROOKE TURNS 11 THIS MONTH!

Oh my gosh that picture of you running that race a decade ago – I remember that! I found your blog around that time I think…maybe a few months before. I can’t believe I’ve been reading for TEN YEARS! Running blogs were huge around that time, I had so many that I read daily. I still follow some of those people on Instagram but yours is the only blog I still read!

Drunken noodles is my go-to Thai order…so yummy.

My husband and I’s “date-iversary” is this month…12 years! We’ve only been married a little over a year though, so it’s funny to have two wildly different anniversary numbers :)

Happy ten-year friendiversary, Anna:). Thanks for hanging out with me for ten years. Thank you for still reading and I need all of those bloggers to get back blogging again. There were so many good ones. I have never had drunken noodles, I must try that next. Happy dateiversary, 12 years! Hahah some of us are nuts and get married after 7 weeks and some of us take time to make such a huge decision:). Hope you do something fun to celebrate!

Darn—I get to Provo four days after that race!!

If you haven’t tried the Lemon Ginger caffeinated liquid IV yet, give it a shot. It will give you the same racing thoughts in the morning as you currently have at night. 😂

I need you to rearrange your trip days so that you can come to the race. Oh I haven’t, off to try it hahaha. Thanks Rachael, have the best day and can’t wait for those happy race thoughts at night.

So fun that you’re doing a race soon, it’s definitely hard to resist racing! My husband and I are actually also signed up for the provo canyon 1/2 and will be doing it too! We’ll be coming from CA and it’s our first time in the SLC area, we’re stoked!! We knew we wanted to do a race in Utah this year, and I’m glad to know we picked a good one!

No milestones this month other than the race :), but June & July were busy for our family with our birthdays and our anniversary! Happy 11th Birthday to Brooke!!

Oh my goodness, Brittany! I would love to meet you at the race. I hope you love it so much. The course will be on the trail I run weekly and you picked a gorgeous one. Cannot wait to see you guys. Thanks!

I would love that!! I’ll send you a message on IG :)

That canyon is beautiful! I can’t believe you haven’t done this race for 10 years. How fun to see where you’re at now with this one.
Our 29th anniversary is this Sunday. It doesn’t seem like it should be that many years, but it’s also hard to even remember life before we were married, ha.
We love Thai food also. We always get a couple of noodle dishes, but I am blanking on what they’re called. Some sort of pad Thai.
So funny how our thoughts are so drastically different from morning to night. I do the same thing. But sometimes I panic in the morning, thinking what am I doing, and then go do my run or workout and everything is ok again. Our minds can be an obstacle at times for sure.
Have a good Wednesday!

Yes! It will be so fun. I mean, I don’t have the anger I had then to fuel me ha but hopefully the speed work will help me run it faster. 29th anniversary, Wendy! This is SO exciting. I hope you guys do something so fun! SOOOOO true… the brain before the run and after the run are drastically different too. Thanks friend, you too!

My birthday is this Saturday. And next Saturday I am running a race in Manning Park before we embark on a road trip to Jasper. I am looking forward to a quiet weekend lol with laundry and packing. I told Jason that I wanted flowers and dairy queen for my birthday lol. It has been a busy summer so far!

Your upcoming race looks beautiful!

Have a great day Janae!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ON SATURDAY! You have such a fun month. Ummm I love Dairy Queen so much. Enjoy, Kristine!

Ah- I wish I was still up here to do Provo (we’re leaving the 14th)- I’ve always wanted to… maybe next year we’ll time our August trip differently.

Chase is turning 8 this month! He still hasn’t let us know what he wants to do… I think it’s going to end up being the new Mario Land at Universal, which, frankly I’ll take over Disney any day. I am not a huge Disney fan… (eek!). What’s Brooke doing?

Once you’ve been to Thailand (you went right?) I feel like it’s sort of hard to get that authentic street food pad thai taste, so green curry is generally my go-to but there IS a place in SD that grills everything and their pad thai there has the real taste.

I am 100% a morning person, at my most productive working, planning, everything. But sometimes it’s almost too much and I have to stop myself because I’ll just sit and write a 2,000 page to-do list.

Off to either hike (if it’s not too muddy) or mini-golf. My kids have been insane for the last few days, we”re trying to wear them out- hiking, the playground, a concert, etc. One thing about UT is there is no shortage of family friendly stuff.

Reply

Oh no…. I wish you were still here for it too. Next year, please. EIGHT, that feels like a big year. I fully support you guys going to Universal. She hasn’t decided yet, it will be a very thorough decision for her ha. You are so right about thai food but I do feel like it has been enough time that I kind of forgot how good it was there ha. Hahah I relate too much with that to-do list. It’s rough. Amen to that about Utah, so much to do with kids. Enjoy, Arianna!

Just think– you could never be a professional napper without tackling those runs because you likely wouldn’t feel so deeply tired without all the miles :) So you’ve just gotta take on both! ha

Panang curry and pad see ew or drunken noodles for my Thai order. And Thai iced tea with boba to drink! YUM.

I made the peach scones last night and they are sooooo good (my coworkers love me extra today ha). I can always trust your recipe recommendations and that means a lot!

Night vs morning– I was never really a fan of the advice “don’t go to bed angry” because I feel at night I’ll be tired and not come up with a good solution to whatever is our issue and I’ll end up angrier. When I table it and wake up and address the “problem” again, it’s with a clear head and usually seems much simpler and less significant. Have a wonderful day, Janae!

Okay, that is a very valid point… runner’s naps are very needed. Off to go get your Thai order, that sounds amazing. Oh I am so happy to hear everyone loved the peach scones. They are heavenly. I’m so with you… I go to bed angry and wake up so chill and happy ha. It just works for you and me. Have a wonderful day, Courtney!

Hi Janae! Pad see ew is my go-to order! My goals also vary based on sleepiness and general tiredness. My birthday is also coming up! I can’t believe Brooke will be eleven?!?!
Have an awesome day!

I need to try pad see ew! Truth. My goals are so much bigger when I’m sleeping well. Thanks, Amy! You too!

After reading about them on your blog for years, we finally went to the food court at Sam’s and asked about buying pizza dough. They did sell it…however they only sold it in quantities of 25. That’s a lot of dough to squeeze in my freezer!! Is that how many you have to buy?

Reply

Hahah yes! We have a chest freezer which makes it easy to store it but yep, 25 at a time! They freeze so well! Go back and get them🤣🤣 Have a beautiful day, Kelly!

I am like Andrew- so positive and optimistic in the evenings and then in the mornings, I think, “What did I do to myself?!?” My favorite Thai foods are spicy green curry and also Pad Thai, yum! Happy early birthday to Brooke! My husband has a birthday on the 29th; he’ll be 44. He hates the birthday attention, but loves the food (I always cook a gumbo even though it’s still hot here, because it’s his favorite, and also the birthday cake of course)! Happy Wednesday, Janae!

Reply

Hahah I just read your first sentence to Andrew and he said he knows those thoughts way too well. Andrew had the spicy green curry yesterday too. Happy birthday month to your husband and I need that gumbo. Yum! Thanks Emily, you too!

Ten years?? Wow. That must feel like a different lifetime.
Wish I could join you for this race. I would hang 25 minutes behind you, bit still! HA
I feel like I am more excited for my run goals at night than when my alarm is waking me so early in the mornings. I need to start moving before I can even think I can reach my big goals. I have to repeat “mood follows action” when I’m getting out of bed.
And put me down for pad thai, please!

Reply

I would be so beyond happy to get to do a race with you. Let’s make it a goal of ours. Yep, so true about mornings… maybe I need to change the title to night vs after my run thoughts ha. Hope you get some pad thai soon!

Let’s not even talk about the when-you-wake-up-at-2-am-why-did-I-sign-up-for-this worries?

Um, no I cannot believe Brooke is almost 11, from someone who has been following you since i searched Boston Marathon/injuries so many years ago. Time flies! (And early HBD to Brooke :))

I get Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, or Green Curry tofu. I always have these “on repeat” cravings during a training cycle-one marathon it was Pad Thai. The last one it was 7 layer dip, go figure. Not sure if anyone else can relate.

Have a good day!

Reply

I am SO grateful your search brought us together. Thank you, Kate. Ohhhhh I know those worries too well. Well, now you have me needing 7 layer dip. I fully know what you are talking about, one training cycle it was breakfast burritos for me from our local Mexican restaurant. I ate so many each week. Thanks Kate, you too!

I’ve been reading your blog since right before Brooke was born. Time just flies!
Mornings are good times for me, too.
August is a special month for us – Les and I met on August 18th and he turned 26 the next day. He’ll be 60 this year which is just crazy to think about! His Grand Canyon Rim to Rim is 9 weeks from today and he’s crushing his training.

Reply

I’m so grateful for our friendship over the years. I swear we have met each other. August is a VERY special year for you two. I love it and tell him amazing work from me on his training. Andrew and I want to do it together!

We sure do live in a beautiful state, Janae! I always love your photos, especially when I recognize the location right away. I too have more depressive or anxious thoughts at night, and I have to remind myself that everything will look better in the morning. Good luck with your upcoming races!

Reply

We truly do. So so grateful for Utah. Maybe that is why we like going to bed early ha… helps us to get to those happy thoughts faster!

I have been a devout reader but never poster for years.
I just had to ask though… if you had 2 days in Provo/Orem area where would you eat and where would you run? We are driving my daughter and her car out to UVU from Ohio and will have a Saturday and Sunday before we fly back. I’m thinking a 8-10 miler and a 5-6 miler.
Also I eat everything!😂

Reply

This makes me so happy and I’m so excited for your daughter! You must run in Provo canyon! There is a gorgeous trail that goes up 6is miles from the mouth. The Murdock trail is great too but not as scenic. Let me know if you are looking for mountain trails. Our favorite places to eat currently is Cubby’s, 180 Tacos, communal, sundance foundary grill, black sheep, La Jolla groves, spicy Thai and kneaders for French toast! Let me know if you need anything else!
