Tuesday Tangents!

(shorts, shoes, tank)

The girls promised to keep things easy for a run, so I met up with them and played it by ear. My legs felt better moving than they did not moving, so I got 6 miles in with them!  Movement is medicine.

Skye was so thrilled to have her cousins over yesterday.

It was rainy, so we hung out inside most of the day.

The bean mixture on these tostadas was amazing. I will be making this recipe again!

And these banana muffins (I added blueberries too) were a hit with everyone at home.

Let’s jump into tangents for the day!

*We are having our best spring yet. We are on our porch almost every afternoon/early evening listening to the thunder and rain.

*I would be delighted if this could be the starting line temperature attire for every race.

*Brooke and insects do not go well together. This is what happened to her leg from ONE mosquito bite.

*Starting this book now! I just finished Maybe In Another Life, and I loved it… I was all about the life where she didn’t leave with Gabby.

*I stole this from my friend’s recap of his 50 miler this last weekend. I love the idea of accepting what the day gives you and sticking with it to learn the lessons from whatever your circumstance is.

*Am I the only one that just learned this about treadmills?

*We were the top 4 in the race on Saturday, and between us all… we have 14 kids. I’m extremely tempted to sign up for another race this weekend, but I think I’ll be smart and wait for a second… I do have my eye on a fun trail race coming up soon.

*Flashback… Andrew and I did a Utah Valley race together seven years ago when we were first dating. Seeing him cross the finish line with these two this year made me smile.  A lot can happen in seven years!

*I heard on the Armchair Expert that dogs wag their tails because they have a pheromone that says they want to play, and wagging their tail is the way they distribute the pheromone.

I’d love to hear any of your tangents!

So sorry to see Brooke’s reaction to mosquito bites!!! That’s exactly what happens to me!! It hurts more than itches, and I hate it. :( Two things that help a little are the Off mosquito wipes (their bug spray doesn’t cut it, but the wipes help even though they’re smelly), and if I notice I got bit right away, running a metal spoon under hot water and then holding the spoon firmly against the bite for a minute seems to reduce how severe the reaction gets. Weird I know, but thanks Google! (p.s. Those Off mosquito wipes have also messed with my nail polish before so be careful with that!)

Thank you SO much for helping us out. We will be trying both. I cannot believe her reactions, thanks Jess!

I feel for Brooke and her mosquito bites. The same thing happens to me. It didn’t when I was younger, started when I was around 18 so that was weird. The best thing I discovered for them was Benadryl anti inch cream. I don’t get store brand, Benadryl brand is much better. I now always pack it when I go places in the summer.
We just had rain last night and thunderstorms and we needed it so much especially after getting the smoky air from the Canada wildfires here in Philadelphia. It was so bad last week. I’ve never lived anywhere near where there were wildfires so that was really eye opening to what other people experience for weeks and we only had it bad for about 2-3 days.

That is so strange that it didn’t start until you were 18! Good call to pack with you whenever you go somewhere. I am so glad that it cleared up in your area. Did you have to stay indoors? Hope you have a beautiful day, Alicia!

Reply

Yes I stayed indoors for about 2 days besides going to my car to get to work and the gym. I actually pulled out my cloth mask I keep in my purse since covid days. It was really bad the one day. I was thankful for my office because I couldn’t run the AC in my apartment with the smoky air. I was even more grateful when I could finally go on my lunch time walk after the 2 days. I definitely won’t take those walks for granted.

Reply

Wow. I can’t imagine. I bet you appreciate those walks more than ever now!

You are going to love Anxious People! It’s so quirky and wonderful. I just finished Hello Beautiful this morning. It was so good, but it gutted me. Imagine me at 4am sitting at my desk in a silent house, drinking coffee and getting ready to run, reading and crying and snotting all over my tshirt sleeves. Highly recommend it haha.

I will add that book to my list, I strangely love books that make me sob. Hahah I’m picturing your morning right now:). I hope you were able to work through it all on your run. Thanks Tracy, have a beautiful day!

Poor Brooke! Mosquitos love me but I started using the brand STEM last year. It’s plant based insect repellent and it works! Major bonus points that it doesn’t have the deet smell so it’s so nice to wear. You can pick it up at Target. Also the ant spray is great. I picked it up on a whim because it’s pet friendly but it works so well.

That book is great! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Have a wonderful Tuesday, Janae!

AWESOME! I will grab it, thank you so much for sharing. Thanks Maureen, you too!

I’m about to start The Perfect Marriage. And I’m about to buy that Adidas sports bra you linked. You have yet to steer me wrong!

Oh I have heard great things about that book. You have to let me know what you think of the bra, it is just so so great. Happy Tuesday, Molly!

Ooo…. I love that author, so I am betting the book is good.
I’m finishing the Sanatorium. It has been a page turner and kept me on the edge of my seat kind of book.
Poor Brooke. That happens to both boys from time to time, but not quite as bad. We use After Bite stick that helps.
Sitting on the porch listening to thunder and rain sounds wonderful! I love listening to thunder.
My tangent today… I am currently taking care of 2 neighbor’s cats while they’re away. And this is the 2nd time already since school has been out. Apparently I’m the official neighborhood cat sitter this summer, ha ha.
Have a good day Janae

I need a page-turner like that! Thanks for sharing, Wendy! That stick sounds like the perfect solution. It’s the simple things that are just the best part of life. That is so nice that you are doing that for your neighbors. Best neighbor! Happy Tuesday!

The purpose of the treadmill makes 100% sense to me!!!

Still stuck in World War II – I’m reading The Maggie Bright, a novel about Dunkirk.

I get attacked by mosquitos in Hawaii. I’ve never reacted that badly but they drive me crazy. I had picked up some Burt’s Bees insect repellent a few years ago. It worked okay, but I found that it actually helped reduce the itching post-bite – better than anti-itch creams. Unfortunately it has been discontinued. It’s #1 active ingredient is castor oil, so you might look for something similar. This is a good product review – https://mosquitorepellentinsider.com/burts-bees-all-natural-herbal-insect-repellent/

HAHA I was pretty shocked that the treadmill started there! Boo to it being discontinued. Thank you so much for the product review, Brooke will be so thankful. Hope you guys are off to Hawaii again soon! Have a beautiful day, Kathy

Brooke! The same thing happens to me with insect bites, especially mosquitos! Benadryl was my bestie when I was younger. It still happens, and I just have to be really careful when I’m outside in the summer – I have gotten a staff infection from it once. SO sorry!

Also, the treadmill – is that for real?! My mind is blown. You’ll have to let me know what you think of that book…I never finished it. I’m considering the Deseret News 10K!

STAFF INFECTIONS?!?! Oh my gosh that is crazy! Right? And now we all choose to use them haha. I’ll be at that race, see you soon!

Hi Janae! Insect bites used to do that to me too! I think the first time I got bit by an insect I was a toddler and my mom said my leg swelled to the size of a grapefruit and they took me to the hospital! But over time I grew out of it and now I just have a normal reaction. I hope the same for Brooke!! Seconding the benadryl anti itch cream and also citronella candles help a lot if you’re hanging out in the backyard.
I listened to an audiobook for anxious people! I like the author.
Have a great day!

Ahhh that must have been so scary! A grapefruit in size! I am so glad you grew out of it and I hope Brooke does too. Thank you so much for the help. Thanks Amy, you too!

I LOVE that the top 4 finishers of your race were all MOMS! Mom runners are my favorite because you all inspire me to keep up with my own running goals.
I just finished the book “Wild” last night, a memoir about a woman who hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, and I really liked it. Not sure which book I’m picking up next!
I have crazy reactions to black fly bites that make me swell up quite a bit & are painful, so whenever I trail run mid-summer, I definitely have to remember to wear bug lotion/bug spray.
Brooke’s mosquito bite looks so painful & probably itchy too! We have tons of mosquitos in MN, and just this year I am discovering that the bug-repellent-wristband things actually seem to work. I always thought a little wristband couldn’t possibly work well, but I think I was wrong. Mosquitos love me, and the bands really seem to help for when I do not feel like putting on bug spray for a limited time outside & they seem to be lasting a few days when I put them back into a ziplock when not using. Gold bond cream is another option (of many!) for mosquito bite relief.

Reply

Thank you, Katie! Wild sounds so good, I must read that. Thanks for sharing. That is so annoying about the black fly bites! I have never heard of these wristbands?! I must get one for her. THANK YOU for the help. Hope your morning is off to a wonderful start!

I had terrible reactions to all bug bites as a kid and still do now – really odd trick I learned in summer camp after a bite/sting- rub a dandelion all over it, like really rub it in. Helps with inflammation and the pain and itching. Often bug bites happen outside and dandelions are more convenient than running home for anti-itch cream. Weird, but I swear it works!

This is such a great tip and I love that it is all natural… going to tell her this today. THANK YOU! Have a great day, Rachel!

When my daughter has mosquito bites, a tip from a nurse works every time. Chop an onion to a juicy mash and put on the bite , cover with plastic wrap and leave on 15-20 minutes. I did this a few times a day. Sounds crazy but it works.

Reply

This is awesome! Will try, thank you Toni!

I loved the book, Anxious People. I’ll be curious to see what you think. Also, I swell up from mosquito bites too, though maybe not quite that big! I hope it resolves itself soon. The itching is miserable.

I am so happy to hear so many people loved it! Thanks Christie, have the best day!
