Weekend Happenings!

I woke up to pouring rain on Saturday morning.  I didn’t follow my own advice from a few weeks ago that I gave my sister when it was raining to just go and run in it… instead I waited an hour for it to clear up which was absolutely the right decision.  I’m so grateful for the runs where I can really focus on my thoughts with zero distractions.

Saturday mornings are all about chores at our house (now that I don’t have a crazy long run or race every Saturday morning like last year ha… chores did not happen those days).  As I was walking down our wood stairs (we tore the runner off of them because we have wanted to put a new one on but haven’t yet) with my hands full of things and a pair of slippery socks on, I slipped and fell on my back so hard.  I just sat there sobbing (Andrew was at a training for intra aortic balloon pumps) and called my ER brother doctor right away.  He reassured me that I would be okay but it scared me so bad.  It reminded me that I am very clumsy while pregnant and I need to be way more careful.  PS after the fall I didn’t have any problems which I am very thankful for.

To turn the morning around we went on a little walk to look at ducks while we waited for the restaurant I think about all day to open.

IMG 4506

180 Tacos with some tortillas and steak on the base…. I think I like vegetables (at lunchtime) more pregnant than non-pregnant.

IMG 4514

Along with some Pretzel Bites after.  When Utah was still at high risk and we were at home for a while these are the things that Brooke said she missed most about normal life.

IMG 4515

Skye’s highlight of the day—> Andrew coming home.

IMG 4523

It rained most of the day so the only other thing we did outside was going for another walk with some umbrellas.

IMG 4529

Sunday morning started off on the right note with waffles and homemade syrup.

IMG 4550

Then we went to a park where Andrew hit tennis balls out for Beretta to fetch and she ran and ran until she couldn’t anymore.

IMG 4571

A few minutes later and we got soaked from rain!  Lightening and thunder started soon after and we luckily got in the car fast.

IMG 4558

My sister had us over for dinner with her newest creation of a margheritta pizza.  Sam’s Club now sells the dough already rolled out and frozen (it is so good, you have to try it) and then she topped it with some olive oil, garlic, mozzarella cheese, basil (she puts that on after she makes it) and tomatoes that she soaks in balsamic vinaigrette and some garlic powder.

IMG 4586

And the most eaten food of the weekend award goes to this stuff… I ate so much of it I will probably never want to eat it again for a very long time ha.

IMG 4504

Andrew’s marathon training begins this week (16 weeks and 5 days until race day).  For some reason I cannot plan things out electronically and need to do it with a pen and paper!  Now to find the perfect balance of helping to push him, being a nice spouse and getting him to a new PR:). His current marathon PR is a 3:55 (without a training plan) and his goal for this marathon is 3:39:59

Here’s his first week of training based on what he has already been doing etc and I’ll include how it goes each week too!

IMG 1246

For my summary from last week, I hit 48.27 miles mostly in the Levitate 3s.  My pace was everywhere from a 9:02-9:20 pace this last week.  I didn’t do any speed work and I walk all big hills now and pause my Garmin for those:). I have a feeling my weekly mileage is going to start dropping a bit but I am SO thankful for each mile I get right now.

Question from a reader—>  “I’m currently still in quarantine in NYC, and have been working out at home.  My downstairs neighbor has been gone for a lot of this time, so I’ve been able to do some cardio and boxing workouts without disturbing her, but now that she’s back, I’m worried that they’ll be too loud, since we have old creaky wood floors.  I’d like to find a thick rubber mat to absorb some of the impact and hopefully some of the noise.  Our ‘home gym’ is actually just a corner of the bedroom, so I need something that I can roll up when I’m done workout out.  I also need something that doesn’t smell strongly of rubber.  I’m hoping someone out there might have a recommendation for me.”  Can anyone help Emily out?

Would you say you are a clumsy person or not so much?

-I am usually clumsy but pregnancy magnifies it.

What was the best part of your weekend?

Do you like to write things out or go with the electronic method?

I live in NYC to in Manhattan. This quarantine is never going to end. I have the worst upstairs neighbor who works out several times a day and it shakes my apartment non stop. So disrespectful and annoying. I commend you for trying to keep the noise down while exercising.

Reply

Heather! That is so so hard. I agree, I thought it was so great that she is so thoughtful about who lives below her. Are you able to run outside? Are you working from home? Thinking about you and I hope that things will change soon.

I got laid off from my job with all this mess and i have type 1 diabetes which makes me high risk so i never leave my home. It’s not worth the risk. I can’t explain how much i miss working out and running. I try to do some home workouts but I have no motivation anymore.

Reply

Heather. I can’t imagine what you are going through right now. I’m always here if you need to talk with someone. You have so much to deal with right now!

Reply

Thanks, Heather! I’m so sorry your neighbor is driving you crazy, and hope that things improve.

So glad you are OK after that scary fall!! Will you continue to post Andrew’s training each week? I’m not training for a marathon right now but I’m looking to get faster when I do train and it’s so interesting to see your plans for Andrew! Have the happiest Monday!!

Reply

Thank you so much Taylor! Yes, I will post each week what his plan is and what he does. I’m excited to hear about how you are getting faster, you’ll have to keep me updated! Have a beautiful day.

Reply

I like to actually WRITE with pen and paper .Imagine that novel concept! Ha! And then I like the feeling of crossing something out (several times) when the task is completed .

Reply

Oh the crossing it out… that is the best feeling ever! Hope you are having a wonderful day, Amanda! I need updates from you whenever you get a chance!

Reply

I’m glad you are ok!! That fall sounds so scary.

I like to write things out, I have a white board calendar and a paper agenda. But for work we all use an electronic shared calendar, so I do use that just for work.

Reply

Thanks so much Mariah! I need to be so careful. Oh that is nice to have a shared electronic one at work. Hope you have a beautiful day.

Reply

Hi Janae — so glad you and baby are okay after falling. That’s very scary stuff! Take care :)

Reply

Thank you so much Betsy! I hope you and your sweet twin boys have a beautiful day.

Reply

Hi Janae !
Oh i’m so so happy that you didn’t hurt yourself.
You must have been afraid for your little one.
What a great idea to tell us all about Andrew’s preparation !
I definitly love to write with a pen ! Much more than writing on a computer.
Have a beautiful monday and take care of yourself :)

Reply

Thank you so much Ingrid! It really did frighten me. With Skye I fell and I was far enough I had to go to the hospital so it just brought back all of the emotions! Thank you:) I hope your day is a beautiful one too and I sure love hearing from you!

Reply

Hi Janae. I too would love to see Andrew’s weekly plan. I love that you’re working in mountain biking in a few days along with the running.
We had a drizzlie weekend here too, but I did get out to our pool twice! It felt so good. It’s not completely open, but open enough, and I will happily take that.
The rest of our weekend was spent working on the bedroom. Almost done! Painting today, then we’ll be able to move everything back.
So glad you’re ok after the fall. That is scary! I can be quite clumsy too at times.
Have a good Monday.

Reply

Awesome! I will keep posting his plan then. I am so glad you were able to get swimming twice and I hope that your achilles is happier and happier. So excited about your bedroom, you are so close. Thank you so much Wendy, you too!

Advice for Emily.. I am in a similar situation, neighbours all making more noise than normal (I didn’t even know anyone lived upstairs before lockdown started), I would recommend you speak to them or write them a letter explaining what you would like to do. I found this to be the best solution, as we are all in the same situation, you will find people are more considerate and tolerant of extra noise at the moment.

I cannot deal with electronic training plans, pen and paper is the best and there is nothing more satisfying than ticking each session once complete!

Reply

That is really great advice for Emily! Thanks for helping, Sarah! I totally agree… pen and paper for training plans is just especially great. Have a beautiful day friend.

Reply

Glad you’re okay from the fall! I fell down the stairs a few weeks ago (slippery socks too) and our dog FREAKED out… he was shaking and wouldn’t stop following me around. I am SO clumsy, it’s amazing I don’t fall more while running, ha.

Reply

Thank you so much Lora and I am SO glad you were okay too! Your dog just loves you so much and just wanted to take care of you. Hahaha same… someday we will learn to stay up! Hope you are having a great day so far!

Reply

I am soooo relived you are ok after your fall!!! That is so scary, especially when pregnant. We buy slipper or yoga socks with the grippers on the bottom because we have fallen/slipped on our wood floors and stairs so many times.

I always think I am not clumsy, but I think my husband would disagree. I tend to drop glass items, food on the floor, running into things with my car (snow banks, our garage door, etc). But in my defense I think it is because I am trying to “do it all at once”and my brain is going faster than my body or my body is going faster than my brain;-)

Best part of my weekend was date night with my husband. I am pretty sure it has been 4 years since our last date night out!!! I ran my longest run in 2 years (20 miles) so there was a lot of Fuller House and couch time too.

Happy Monday!!!

Reply

Thank you so much Becky and I need to get some of those socks asap… especially right now. YES, you have so many things on your plate that you are just going to have to have some things like that happen! So happy you were able to have a date night and 20 miles… you had a fabulous weekend. Thanks Becky, you too!

Summer storms are my favorite- I love when it just rains off and on all day. Glad you guys stayed safe though!

Best part of my weekend was having a couple over that we haven’t seen in months (just via Zoom) and having a fire outside with lots of smores and mountain pies. It’s the perfect social distance activity!!

Reply

Seriously those warm rains just feel so good! I bet that felt heaven to get together and I hope you get to do more and more of those kinds of things. Enjoy the rest of your day, Gretchen!

Reply

I had a fall last year when I got tangled up in the leash while running with my dog. I too had a moment where I sat on the ground and cried… I think as adults we fall so seldom, it really is a shock. Hope you’re not too bruised up. Falling on stairs is the worst.

Reply

That really is so true, it really did shock me. So glad you were okay and thanks for sharing with me. Thank you so much, luckily today I felt 100%. Enjoy the rest of your Monday, Christine!

Reply

Glad you are okay after that fall, Janae!

Reply

Thank you so much Leslie! I hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

Reply

Clumsy, me not so much. Hope however, could have some Janae qualities. Runs like the wind and finds multiple cracks to trip on while crusin. :)

Best part of the weekend was pool time with our good friends and her spontaneously making us dinner since I have made every single meal since March 13th. Yikes.

Reply

Hahaha those cracks just jump out of me. I am so happy that you were able to be with your friends at the pool and somebody else made you dinner?! Food tastes so much better when somebody else makes it (especially after about 3 months of doing it yourself… you are amazing)! Happy summer Erica and crew.

Reply

So glad you are ok! Must have been so scary!

I am clumsy in general lol. My partner says I just need to slow down lol.

It was pouring here on Saturday too! I took am umbrella and went to meet a friend for coffee. Sunday it was beautiful. I did a longer run ..its the first time I actually listened to music while running and the 9 miles flew by. Then we rode out bike to the beach for a picnic.

I signed up for a virtual running challenge where you can claim badges for achieving challenges. ie.. running on the worst weather day..a sunset run and climbing 2000 stairs lol. We have 3 months to achieve all or as many of the the challenges and there will be a zoom party to distrubute draw prizes at the end of summer. Also I got my new saucony pro shoes. Hoping they make me faster…lol. They feel like air on my feet.

I hope you have a great day Janae and happy training to Andrew!

Reply

Thank you so much Kristine and maybe that’s my problem too… I just need to slow down. Your weekend sounds like it was a really great one and great job on your longer run. Keep me updated on this running challenge, it sounds like a blast. AHHH I will need a review of the pro please. Thanks Kristine and you too!

Reply

I’m so sorry you fell! But thank goodness you and the little one are all good!

I’m pretty dang klutzy and definitely fell on black ice when I was pregnant with my oldest. So scary!

I like to plan electronically and then print it off so I can cross off days!

Reply

Thank you so so much Marissa! Oh black ice is evil. Glad you guys were okay! Have a beautiful day!

I just saw a thick mat at Target that was rolled up; it was the thickness of maybe 2 or 3 yoga mats in one so that might be a good option for your reader?!
Oh I’m so sorry you fell and thank God you’re ok and babe is too!
I definitely have my clumsy moments but I think yoga has helped me learn to balance a bit better. Except when I’m tired. Nothing can help me then! Ha!
Best part of my weekend was grabbing the last Swiffer wet pack from Target and being able to buy Lysol wipes for the first time in MONTHS!! And also trying out a couple new recipes that were actually edible!
Pretty funny what I get excited about these days!
For training plans, I like them electronically so I can go back and review and re-use the plans. My last coach put my marathon training plans on google docs that I’m now re-using. I really really love a hand written list though.
Have a great day!

Reply

Okay, that mat sounds awesome! I hope she can get that one. Thank you so much friend. AHHHH where did you get the Lysol wipes, we still can’t find them. You’ll have to share your favorite recipe you made at some point:). Those things all really excite me too. Valid point about the electronic plans, so nice to have to go back to! Thanks Jenny, you too!

Reply

Thanks, Jenny! I was looking mainly on Amazon, but I’ll try Target. Of course you can find anything at Target, right?

Reply

I wasn’t clumsy until I started peri-menopause, then boom! I tripped and fell so much. Les was constantly asking, “Where did you get that bruise?” ha! So glad you’re okay. You need to let the kids carry stuff for you – do it now while you’ve got a great excuse ;)

Best part of my weekend – We’ve started having a limited number of people in church now (25% seating capacity.) Even though I can’t hug all my friends, it’s been wonderful seeing their faces again. We’re being super careful, still wearing masks and social distancing, but it’s so much better than singing to an empty building.

I’m a combo paper/electronic list user. I just created my grocery list and here’s how it works: pencil and paper in hand, check cupboards and fridge, make my list. Transfer everything from the notepad to my phone using the Out of Milk app. The app is awesome, I’ve got my list in the order of the store and I cross items off as they go into my cart. When they’re crossed off, they get moved off the list so I only see what I haven’t got yet.

Reply

That is so interesting Kathy, hormones do some very interesting things to us. That really is so true, time to delegate. I am SO happy that you are able to go to church now. I bet that just feels like heaven especially after the last few months. I need to try that app… I like your process, Kathy!

Reply

I am always clumsy but was more so when pregnant. We have lived in our house for 21 years and the only time I have fallen down our steps is when I was pregnant with our second child(hope
I’m not jinxing myself here lol). My son was 4 at the time and he heard me fall—he was more shook up than I was! And if it makes you feel any better our daughter was born perfectly healthy a few months later:). I had no complications from the fall. She is now 15 and stronger than I could dream she would be! But, just for safety’s sake, let’s you and I both make it a habit to hang on to the handrail on steps from now on!

Reply

THANK YOU so much for the reassurance! That helps me to feel a lot better. Skye and Brooke were pretty shook up from it too because they heard it. Keep up the streak of not falling on those stairs of yours going. Hope your day is a beautiful one, Jen!

Reply

I am pretty clumsy, that’s why I don’t try trail running! I am glad you’re ok, sounds scary!

I like to write stuff out too, I keep a little log book with miles (since 2013) and I also keep track of my mileage on each pair of shoes.

Have a great week!

Reply

Thank you so much! Oh I hear ya, my clumsy side comes out even more on the trails. Okay, THAT is so cool that you have a log book of your mileage for the last 7 years. I LOVE that and I want that (so I need to start that)! Thanks Loribeth, you too. I hope the animals are all doing well!

Reply

Hi Janae! So glad you are ok, that was scary just to read!
Emily, I’ve seen workouts online that are marked apartment friendly because they don’t have jumping, maybe you can try some of those while you wait for your mat? I follow madfit on YouTube and I know she has some, and I’m sure there’s more if you search. Good luck and good on you for being a considerate neighbor!

Reply

Thank you so much Amy! That is so cool that people are offering workouts online just for this purpose, how thoughtful. Thanks for helping and have a beautiful Monday.

Reply

Perfect! I’ve bookmarked Madfit and will look for more. Appreciate the recommendation.

That darn sweet and salty popcorn (exact same brand) got me this week too! My sister in law gave us a costco sized bag of it and, no joke, I finished the whole thing this week. I’m probably better off never bringing that stuff back into my house again haha!

Reply

You are NOT alone. I don’t know how they make it so perfectly but it just is and our Costco had them as buy one get one free so onto the next bag now ha. Have a wonderful day, Jade!

Reply

Glad you (and baby) are OK! I am clumsy, too.

I prefer pen and paper!

For Emily, since she seems to I know her neighbor, I’d talk with them. She might check out interlocking floor mat squares like gyms have. I had some and liked them. I can’t remember the site maybe American Floor mats. The type I’m talking about is under gym mats fit lock tiles.

Reply

SUCH a good idea! Thanks for the help Karen and I hope your week is off to a great start.

Reply

We also took our dog to the park to chase balls this weekend. It was so hot that he took off running to get to some shade across the field… at first I didn’t know where he was headed!

I’m sorry about your fall!!

Reply

Hahah that’s awesome… I’m glad that he found the shade asap! Wish we could take our dogs to the park together. Thank you and I hope you have a beautiful day.

Reply

For Emily, you can get some of those interlocking gym flooring/workout mats that go together like a puzzle from home improvement stores and Amazon, though I think Amazon only sells them in higher quantities. No idea about the smell though. Reach out to your neighbor and let them know you’re open to feedback about the noise level- a homemade treat probably wouldn’t hurt either ;D. Plan your workout during a specific time frame and let them know that too. That way they know things might be a little louder during that time and can plan accordingly.
Janae, so glad you’re ok after your fall! I keep my training calendar in Excel. I love putting that big gold star on my completed workouts! I tried putting it on a calendar on the fridge, but I HATED it. I give myself enough of a hard time if I can’t keep to my training schedule, but I feel so.much.worse if everyone else in the house can see how much I suck too. It was too much pressure.
Hope you have a great day!

Reply

Thank you so much Jen for helping Emily out! You are all just the best. I’m so glad you found what that Excel is perfect for your training and I totally see where you are coming from. Thanks friend, you too!

Reply

I know exactly the kind of puzzle piece rubber pieces you mean, and will look into them. Thanks for reminding me to look at home repair stores, too. Great suggestions also about how to schedule/talk things over, and a baked good is a good idea.

Reply

Since I’m new to cooking, and love your sister’s Margherita pizza recipe and would love to try it, do you mind if I ask what temperature and for how long she cooked everything ? Thanks!

Reply

Hey Leslie! YAY for cooking more. So she uses a pizza stone like this one ( https://amzn.to/2YsSH8v ) and puts it in the oven at 500 degrees for 30 minutes before she puts the pizza on it (it helps make the crust a bit crispy and delicious). She cooked these pizzas for about 10 minutes. Let me know if you try them! Have a great rest of your day.

Reply

Please put some anti-skid on your stairs ASAP! I am glad you are okay (but I bet you’ll be sore or have bruises?!)

I love to write out my lists, plans, anything on paper. A sharp pencil or Stabilo pen is my favorite writing tool. (I almost wrote Yum after that because when using the word “favorite” I think of treats)

Totally clumsy. I am always bumping into something, catching a toe, etc.

That pizza looks fantastic!!!!

Reply

Thank you so much Kelly and Andrew will get that on there asap! I hope you have some great lists to write out soon and the yum made me laugh so hard haha! Now I need to get one of these Stabilo pens! Thanks Kelly and I hope your Monday is off to a great start.

Falling while pregnant was one of my biggest fears! Especially when a few days after I put a new shower mat in, I saw the Greys episode where she loses her baby after falling in the shower… :'( Be careful <3 Also, that popcorn is the stuff.

Reply

I was SO nervous about falling when I was pregnant!! A week before I was due I stepped off our deck funny and fell, scrapped up my shin super bad and kinda did this weird roll thing to make sure I didn’t land on my belly. I was so shaken up! Thankfully the baby was okay but it caused me to spring a leak in my water so a few days later (my baby was stubborn and made me labor in the hospital for two days) we had a beautiful baby girl! Literally everyone who came into my room asked me about the GIANT scrape/bruise on my leg though so I had to keep telling the story. My husband was like “make sure they know I didn’t push you!” haha

Reply

You fell?! What a fright. So glad everything is a-ok.

Are those CHUNKS of garlic on the Margherita pizza? Woah, baby, woah! Like it.

Reply

Janae, I’m glad you’re OK after your fall! When I used to live in Brooklyn, the (uneven, old) sidewalks got me good a couple of times.

Thanks so much for posting my question! I really appreciate your help and everyone’s incredible advice. I’m sure I’ll be able to find a good mat and have a productive, friendly conversation with my neighbor based on their help. I love how the comments on your blog are always a conversation, and I always enjoy reading everyone’s perspectives, even when the questions they’re answering aren’t mine.

Reply

JANAE!!! Glad you and baby are ok! I am so clumsy. I get up every night during the night to go to the bathroom, thanks to all the water I drink and I ran into the corner of the bed a couple weeks ago and broke my toe!
That popcorn is the BEST! We buy it at Costco and its a staple in our house!
Best part about the weekend. . . going to church and being with others!! The doors are finally open and it was such a huge relief! So beautiful to just worship with others and hear live preaching!
Advice for Emily. . .maybe work out outside as much as possible?? I know that is what my family who is in NYC has been doing right now. It is tough up there for sure and my heart goes out to you right now and everyone in NYC! I am originally from there so hold on tight!
Paper and pen all the way! My hubs and I went grocery shopping together this past weekend and he says you know you can have the digital list. . . ohhh no I love to see it in person and be able to make notes, check things off and all that fun stuff!

Reply

Oh no! Sorry to hear you fell ? that’s so scary! Be extra careful and hold onto the stair rail if you have one! Glad to hear you’re okay but wow that must have just!

Hats off to you for running in the rain! I am happy to take my walks in the rain with an umbrella but feel so icky with wet clothes when I get home I have to tear them odd and shower! Usually with a hot cocoa after ?

Way to go on the training Andrew! You got this!

My waffle maker stopped working. Do you have a waffle maker recommendation!? I love waffles so much and nothing beats a homemade waffle but I’m going bonkers reading reviews of different waffle makers! ?

Take care and Hope your Monday was good to you! ?
