Back home, starting the long runs and VLOG #3 (about our jobs, the kids share their favorites and training with kids)!!!!

Happy Monday!!  We’ve got a busy week up ahead for us (I’ll be hitting up EUGENE this weekend for the Olympic Track and Field Trial events) and as far as running goes—> we are making it a priority to start marathon training this week! We are 14 weeks out from the St. George Marathon and needing to get back into the long run routine.

It has been some time (my last marathon was December) since I’ve been in the habit of doing them.  Back to setting the alarm clock on Saturday mornings ridiculously early.  I always have to remind myself at the beginning of marathon training that those first few long runs are crazy hard but once I get through those first few ones and build up some endurance they start feeling better (and I recover faster).  I also want to do what I did for St. George 2 years ago and do a chunk of my long runs on the trails to get in some hills and soft surfaces.

Let’s talk about Sunday for a minute.

For breakfast the kiddos went out and collected some fresh eggs from the chickens and Andrew made some pretty delicious scrambled eggs for breakfast.  We didn’t run yesterday and pretty much just sat around watching movies until church at 1.  Lazy Sundays are the best.

After church we hit the road again to head back home.  We had snacks from the gas station and the kids had movies.  Win win.

IMG 0435

Brooke also had a pretty intense dream about sprinkles during the drive.  We know this because she was completely asleep and said loudly, ‘Mama, I want sprinkles!!’  Andrew and I were laughing pretty hard.

IMG 0436

A stop for dinner in the middle of nowhere… thank goodness they have my favorite salad there.

IMG 0438

And Andrew grabbed me a Milky Way for the rest of the drive.  He is a good man.

IMG 0442

Our shirts from our last race came and I can’t think of a better way to describe running/racing—>  Pain You Enjoy (or that you enjoy once you are all done;).

IMG 0444

Seeing this made me even more excited to watch the Olympic Marathon. Shalane is on FIRE!! She finished the BAA 10k in 30:52 (about a 4:58 average pace)…. next up RIO!  We should have a big watching party together for the marathon.

Third video—>  What training is like after kids!  How we do it and what changes we’ve noticed!

Who else has a fall marathon that they are starting to train for soon?  Are you in the habit of weekly long runs right now?

What has been your favorite job that you’ve ever had?

Parents reading—>  tell me about your training/running before and after kids! What changed??

I’m trying to decide if I want to run a full this fall..I’m doing a half in August and my “goal” marathon would be in October..so trying to figure out if I can pull it off!

It might seem cheesy but the job I have now is my favorite :) I’ve never been so excited to come in to work every day and my co workers are all amazing!

Have fun at the trials! So jealous..take LOTS of pictures!

Not in the habit of long runs currently but soon…..I hope.

Favorite job ever is the one I have now, I’m self employed and make way less money but I love it and that is ultimately what matters most :)

Very cute family you guys have there, very happy for the four of you!

I love my current job, the people I work with are great, I have a good boss and I stay busy. I can’t ask for much more! I did love my boss at my former job though. He was a good friend of mine and he was easily the best boss I’ve ever had (and not just because he was a friend).

Saturdays are my sleeping in days, right now I can’t even think about getting up super early to do a long run then! It’s been so nice to be able to sleep in for a change!

I’m so jealous you’re going to the trials! I know several people going so I’ll be living vicariously through them for awhile!

I’m running the California International Marathon this fall! I start in August although I need to do a base building phase to get back into mileage after injury.
My favorite job is my current one: a running coach!

CIM is my ‘hometown race’…I live about 15 min from the start & about 20 from the finish! Have you done it before? I’ve run it several times (perfect course for a BQ! I’ve qualified every time I’ve run it) & its a great race…well organized & great support from the community. I hope your training goes well!

Reply

That’s awesome that you’ve BQ’ed each time! This will be my first time running it (I live in the Seattle area) and I’m so excited about the course and spectator support. Thank you so much! Do you have any recommendations on training for the course?

There are rolling hills the first 1/2 & think that surprises some people…especially if you go out too fast. There aren’t any big hills…just be aware that it’s not flat! You’ll do great!

I’ve been training for Chicago for a couple of weeks now so I am finally feeling in the habit of higher mileage and longer runs! It takes me a little bit to get into the groove since I only train for one marathon a year.

Hahah dreams about sprinkles, Brooke is definitely your daughter! :D

I LOVE these Vlogs so much! Just wondering maybe if you could address this topic for the next one if it’s not too private, just wondering how you go about the whole ex thing if you see them while you’re with Andrew?

I am doing the Chicago Marathon in October (my first!) and I have just completed the 3rd week of an 18-week plan. The long runs aren’t that long yet, the furthest has been 10 miles, but it’s a progression. :) My favorite job ever was when I was a lifeguard–you spent the day in the sun and/or the water, and during all of my breaks, I’d play with the kids. So fun!

Y’all are seriously so ridiculously precious together. These vlogs are adorable! :)

I’m not training for a marathon, but I’m trying to get back into my consistent half marathon shape/training so I can be ready for some PRs in the fall. Fingers crossed!

Today marks the beginning of my training for the Saratoga Half Marathon in the fall, so I’m not in the habit of long runs lately– but soon!

My favorite job was working at an ice cream shop! Because of the free ice cream? Maybe…

I love the vlogs, keep ’em coming!

Andrew’s previous job sounds really interesting. Did he say what he majored in college? It sounds pretty similar to my previous job in the public health.

I enjoy listening to your vlogs. Have you ever considered doing podcats? That would be awesome, and it’s great he supports your blog.

I’m jealous you’ll be at the trials. That’s so awesome.

Reply

HEY GIRL!! First, so happy you had a pain-free mile recently wahoo!!! Andrew majored in exercise science and he also got a bachelor’s in Spanish so he started at the center as a Spanish teacher and then it turned more into the public health side of things too! Super cool stuff! That’s not a bad idea… we will have to do podcasts. I’ll pack you in my bag for Eugene (so hurry on over to Utah:)

such interesting questions in the VLOGs! really got me thinking this morning. I can’t wait to start getting back into long runs. slowly coming off this injury and just aching for them even though I know they’re going to feel impossible when I start up again.

favorite job was in high school helping to manage a kid’s theatre company. it was always such a blast and defined my summers.

I’m thinking about signing up for a fall 1/2 marathon, but I am not quite sold yet. My favorite job I ever had was when I was a nanny for a year after college to the family that lived right next door. It was so flexible and so fun!

Reply

Loved the VLOG! Y’all are so cute together. I am definitely planning on doing a fall marathon, but I just need to figure out which one :)

Reply

I never ran pre-kids but now I just get it in early if I can or haul everyone to the gym daycare. Wish I had a treadmill at home! Most fun job? In highschool as a lifeguard. Now I’m a teacher and home with my kids- which makes getting a run in even more tricky! Just signed up for my next half and will be starting my training plan next month.

We are SO blessed that both of us love our jobs now. We are at such a great season in our lives!

After our 48 hour jaunt in 5 DAYS (!!!!), we have some other long races and then we will start to incorporate speed work back in for our fall 50 miler. I have some big goals for the 50 mile distance and need to keep my leg speed up. I am trying to decide whether I want to keep targeting a marathon PR. I just don’t love the distance but I feel like I will be unsettled if I never try to break 3:15. So, we shall see as time unfolds!

Running is my main physiotherapy to fight cystic fibrosis so my long run is crucial every week to keep the lungs clear. It means I can’t go extra long every week or the rest of my body would crumble (!) but it takes minimum 1h30 to make a good job. I was always an early bird so the training didn’t change much after my son was born (except for the first few months when I felt like a zombie haha). I still go first thing in the morning before work, for me, it is the best way to make sure it happens!

I started my own graphic design business in 2007. I did that full time for 4 years. Since then I still have it but also took on office positions part time and now for the last 2 months I’ve been working for a company full time but I still have that freelance business and work a whole lot on nights and weekends. It’s the most fulfilling. I’m hoping to get more clients so I can go back to my freelance biz as my full time gig again. I’m not meant for corporate work environments. :)

Reply

I didn’t go back to the gym or start running again until my son started preschool! I wouldn’t change it looking back either.

No running for me. I’m having hip replacement surgery the end of August. Most unfair thing in the world. You’ll have to run for those of us who cannot. :(

Reply

NOOOOO I am so so beyond sorry about that Megan. I can’t even imagine. You’ll be in my prayers and I hope you have the fastest recovery ever. xoxox

Hi Janae! I’m loving your vlogs with Andrew! I’m slowly getting back into the blogosphere after having Baby #2 a couple weeks ago so it’s been fun catching up here! Congrats again on your engagement and I’m itching to get back into running and marathon training myself! Good luck with the Lon run routine!

Reply

CONGRATS on baby #2!! That is so so exciting and I hope you are getting a little bit of sleep! Thank you and keep me updated with how you are doing!

I am lucky to love my current job in Academic Advising at a large public University. I get to talk with students all day and help them solve problems! While i’ll never get rich doing it, the work-life balance is great and I love what I do. Prior to this, my favorite job was scooping ice cream! I spent my summers home from college scooping at a local shop, and we were always busy. People getting ice cream are always happy, unlike most other food service. I even managed a Ben & Jerry’s to pay my rent while I was a graduate student. Loved it.

I’ve gotten faster since having kids. My pr in the 5k has improved several times since. I do a lot of night and weekend runs . I tried the stroller thing but I couldn’t run nearly as far as with out so I had to rearrange my schedule instead.

My favorite job I had was marketing with a bank. I also had my dream job as a photographer but after 3 years I realized that having my hobby as a full time job wasn’t the best idea.

I’m so excited to watch Shalane race!!!!!! I have a half in September!

Reply

Looks like you had a fun weekend! I ran the BAA 10k yesterday (was just in the process of typing up my recap) and I totally paced Shalane to her record-breaking win. hahahaha! I think I was one mile in when she was headed back in for the win.
I am running New York this year (first time!) and I officially start training the week of 7/17. I am not looking forward to long runs in the summer, but maybe it will make race day feel like a breeze!

Reply

WAY TO GO yesterday Kate!! Way to pace her too;) I’m sure she was very appreciative! I am STOKED for you to run New York. It is so amazing and keep me updated with training!

No marathons in my near future but I just completed my 96th lifetime half marathon on Sunday. It was so humid and I was drenched in sweat by mile 1!
I’ve had some clunkers of jobs but I’ve had two really great ones. For 11 seasons I worked for an NBA franchise. The first 8-9 years were a blast but as I got older, turning it around day after day and night after night became too much so I made the tough decision to leave. The next 4 years were hit & miss but I’m happy to report that I am back in the sports & entertainment role (with an NFL franchise this time) and I’m loving every minute of it!!!

Love the vlogs … & the 2 little guests you had on :)

Not too many “long runs” for me, my goal is to focus on getting my body as prepared for labor as possible. Most of my runs have been latley hovering around the 3-5 mile average.

Favorite job? Blogging and being a horse back riding camp counselor! Although I think being a mom will be my new favorite job :)

Reply

Being a mom is by my favorite job too;) GOOD LUCK with everything Bethany, you will do amazing and you have the best reward ever coming after all of the labor:) Hope you are feeling great today!

Reply

Thank you so much Janae! I’m so excited to my our little one and eventually run miles and miles together! I LOVE how you and Brooke run around the track together- makes me so excited to do that with my little one eventually!

Reply

I need to study the calendar and crack down on when the true training shall begin for our full marathon in December. Since this will be our second full, I hope we will be in a much better shape than last year!
I have been on and off about the weekend runs- sometimes it will be 10 miles and like yesterday, it was only 6 miles…. No consistency yet and we just have to make do with what we can with our work schedules!

I think I like my current job because of the amazing coworkers but my previous job had the best coworkers. The work itself was super stressful but people made up for it :)
Here, it’s not so stressful but the fact that the turnover rate is so high it makes me worry!!!

Reply

My 13 yo son is in an intense training cycle (he does triathlons) and we’re traveling for his races so I’m taking a break from marathon training. I miss it. A lot.
Favorite job ever – labor and delivery nurse. I didn’t start doing this until I was 40 and I absolutely love it. I’ve seen hundreds of births and it is amazing. Every. Single. Time.

Reply

RENE!! How the heck are you!?!? And when are you coming back to Utah:) We need a PF date. Oh I bet that job is incredible. I am so happy you have something that you love so much and your son sounds amazing!!

How could any one get sick of these VLOGS??? They are so sweet.

Weird random question…..What is on Andrew’s shirt that he is wearing in the Vlog? I kept trying to figure it out and then my daughter approached the computer as the vlog was on and the first thing she asked was…”Is that a finger on his shirt?” I told her I did not know.

ha!

thanks.

Reply

HAHAH now that you say that I’m not sure either:) I will have to ask him after his meeting. I think it is part of a surfboard fin in the ocean!? It is quicksilver so I’m guessing it has something to do with that.

Reply

If you two started a vlogging channel on Youtube, you would be HUGE. Seriously please do that so we can all see your face every day. Hehe

Reply

That is an awesome idea… I feel good about this. Thanks Annie and now I’ll have to ask Andrew:) Hope you are having a beautiful day!

Hey Janae, long time reader. Just wanted to send a “thank you” to you for keeping me motivated to run, even through my second pregnancy. I’ve especially struggled with running after having my first. Races are such a good motivator to keep at it, but some days it’s just too difficult to get outside, or you just can’t because of parenting duties. Any suggestions on treadmills? Brands and models you love? Have you or any of your readers had luck with second-hand treadmills? Looking to make the investment and would love to hear your thoughts.

These vlogs are probably my favorite thing on your blog ever! Mostly because I always wanted to know what you sound like IRL. Did that sound creepy?! Ahh I hope not. But I like that you are having a convo with us.
My fave job may just be the one I have now (nanny) or babysitter when I was younger. Or a close second would be the summer I worked at the pool snack bar in high school and could eat ALL the candy for free!! Best perk ever.
Keep making the vlogs! I’m so happy for you Janae and I don’t even know you!!!!!!

I am in the beginning weeks of training for the NYC marathon. My long runs aren’t very long at the moment. :) I’m focusing on adding another day of running at the moment. I try to not freak myself out and just take it a step at a time.

My favorite job is being a holistic health coach. I love when my clients have those transformative moments, big and small.

the 4 of you are such a darling family!!

Please find out what is on Andrew’s shirt. I can’t figure it out and it’s driving me crazy!
Best job being a teacher. But being a mommy of three is pretty awesome too!
I’m running the Philadelphia marathon in November. Haven’t started training yet but I’m working on my base.
I didn’t do too much running before kids. With three kids and working full time it can be hard to get all the runs in but when it’s something that you love to do and for me it makes me a better mom, I make sacrifices and get it done. I just try super hard not to sacrifice time spent with my kids. That means running in the early morning before they are up.

OMG you’re coming to Eugene–my hometown! You have got to run Pre’s trail, it will spoil you for all other running paths. So excited that we’ll be in the same town for a weekend…I’m a longtime reader and it totally feels like I know you by now! Hope you have a fabulous time!

Registered yesterday to run my third Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon in Oct! Now I just need to keep the injuries away…

I stopped out of my professional career when I had kids and have worked several years now as an elementary teaching assistant. It’s so much fun, and the best part is I have the exact same schedule as my girls :). It’s going to be tough going back to a desk job someday!

Reply

The kids are the cutest! It’s so awesome that Brooke gets a brother! The part about Brooke’s sprinkle dream made me laugh out loud at my desk! Love the Vlog & your little family!

I’m starting to (officially) train for the Hartford Marathon next Monday. Semi in the habit of weekly long runs but really looking forward to getting back in the grind!

I LOVE these vlogs but I do have to say, they are SUPER SUPER quiet! Is there any way you could edit up the volume? I’ve watched them on my laptop, my desktop, and my boyfriend’s laptop and on all three I’m missing at least half of what ya’ll say.. Maybe I’m just deaf. :P
Your family is so so cute!
