What are my work plans?

I was able to read your sweet comments on my treadmill screen while running and watching Parenthood (in the dark… I don’t know why I didn’t turn the light on this morning) all at the same time this morning.  I just did an easy 4 miles this morning and I will be going on a trail run with some friends later on.

This morning a reader asked about what my work plans are going to be now that I am getting divorced.

I try not to think more than a year ahead at a time (mile at a time right:) so for the next year I will be staying at my parents’ house (I do pay rent ((although it is a lot cheaper than what I was paying to live in N. California)) and I pay for 100% of my expenses and for Brooke’s expenses because I like feeling like an adult and independent.

Full disclosure:  My mom does take me out to froyo a lot and she pays for that.

I love living at home right now because of the emotional support, my parents are awesome and it is nice that I can go run or out with friends when Brooke is sleeping because my mom is home.   I am so lucky to have this blog (I talk HERE about how I started the blog because I love blogging and somehow I got lucky enough to turn it into a ‘job’ ((even though I refuse to call it a job because it is so fun for me)) because I get to be with Brooke all day.  Who knows… next year may be different but for the time being I am so lucky to be where I am at now.   I may go back to teaching when Brooke is a little older and eventually I really want to go back to school and take night classes… we shall see what happens.  I hope that answers your question:)

PS I need to stop with the (((((( )))))))s.

I was too lazy to walk upstairs this morning to get my PureFlows to run in so I grabbed my Ravenna 4s out of the closet.  Still love them but the PureFlows will always be my number one.

IMG 2374

I had a long list of things I wanted to do with Brooke the second she got home so first we went to the park to swing.

IMG 2386

Then we had a fall photo shoot (from my instagram:  hungryrunnergirl)

IMG 2400

Jumped in a few puddles.

IMG 2394

And since my landlord only allows one dog at a time at our house we went and got Brooke her very own dog that barks and moves around when you tug the rope.  She loves it and has said doggy approximately 300 times since she got it.

IMG 2376

And a beautiful grilled cheese with jam sandwich on a rainy day for lunch.

IMG 2414

I considered topping my sandwich with almond butter too but I thought that might be going too far.

Taking care of Brooke is a full-time job and you are SO good at it. If you are fortunate enough to be able to do that, do it for as long as you can, I say. I was a paralegal before I had kids and I LOVED it but I won’t be going back until my kids are older.

I ran in Nike Flyknit Trainers and ate leftover Spinach Pasta Primavera. I made it for dinner last night and my kiddos thought it was disgusting, ha. So I have tons of leftovers.

Great instagram photo shoot! :)

Reply

Hey – I’m currently a paralegal and love my job! If your kids don’t want those delicious sounding leftovers, I will take em :-) I love spinach and my fiancé hates it!

What’s up with these ridiculous spinach haters? ;)

It’s awesome that you can stay with your parents and the blog makes enough money for you not to have to work right now. Plus, how great for Brooke that her mom is always around!?

I ran in Brooks Adrenalines today.

I’m the marketing director for Aspaeris, but since it’s a startup, I pretty much run the show. That sounds way more glamorous than it is.

Reply

I ran in Nike Vomeros today. I ran a half yesterday in my Saucony Kinvaras and they felt shot, so I was happy to have a TON of support on today’s recovery run.

I work as a writer in the development office at a cancer hospital and I’ve worked there for about 15 months.

Today I had quinoa salad for lunch and it was outstanding!! Quinoa, cranberries, green onion, and cheese. I’m not sure what else was in there… I ate it so fast I can’t even remember.

Hope your week is off to a wonderful start!

Janae- It’s wonderful that you are able to stay home with Brooke (the early years are so wonderful and go so fast) you are such a great mom to her and you two are always having a blast. It’s great that your parents are able to help you at this time.. plus I’m sure they love having you guys around again :) And by the way Brooke is turning into one gorgeous little girl.. she’s just precious.

I wore a pair of asics today- no clue what model ha.

I work as a nanny for 2 wonderful little boys while I’m in school.. I kinda don’t want to graduate so I never have to leave them haha.

I also had grilled cheese today!

Reply

I haven’t had time to workout today! Im rocking some nine west heels. Wonderful for running im sure but in case they are not I will wear my brooks adrenaline. I like the ravenas. Typically the shoes that fit me best aren’t the prettiest nor coolest looking ones, ever.

Reply

How seriously amazing that you get to stay home with your little lady! You both are so lucky and you take advantage of that, I think that’s perfect! And we’re all lucky that you have this “little blog” as your job, if I do say so myself :)

Thanks for sharing the details of your life. I really love how open you are and I think that these posts are so helpful to women in your same/similar situation <3 Do you know what you would go back to school for?

Today I ran in my Nike Flex shoes. They are a bit more minimalistic than my old shoes so it is really taking some getting use to. My ankle muscles buuuurn so bad after every run in these!!

I don't work at the moment because I am applying to medical school. I actually fly to an interview tomorrow–keep your fingers crossed for me!

And for lunch I had a huge baked potato with cheese, salsa, avocado and plain greek yogurt piled high.

I love your plan – sounds perfect for you right now! I am a stay at home mama and love every bit of it. Being able to see Hunter’s new developments and spend each day with him is the best, and I wouldn’t miss that for the world.

I was going to go on a run today, but the rainy weather has made me want to stay in my sweats and cuddle with Hunter all day, so that’s what I’m doing. :)

I just love Brooke’s little bun – adorable!

Reply

I’m a full time mommy! I sell Scentsy on the side, but it’s mainly for fun ;) My little peanut is sick and need non-stop cuddles so I haven’t worked out in over a week…I am CRAVING a solid, sweat workout!!

Reply

Kris is right about motherhood being a full time job, especially at this age. Plus if you went back to work, all of your readers would miss you! I like that you’ve been able to make a blogging so fruitful for you, and we all appreciate it too.

I ran in my neon New Balance Acteva Lites. I’ve never worn New Balance before, but I might be a convert! Still interested in trying Brooks – the Pureflows look very light and comfortable. Are they good for high mileage, or better for racing?

Lunch was some veggies and fruit at my desk – very boring. But I did used to eat peanut butter and cheese sandwiches as a kid, so almond butter on grilled cheese might not be too weird!

My job is not my dream, but since reading your blog and talking to friends, I’m thinking very seriously about joining Teach For America or going back to school for a Masters of Arts in Teaching. It looks like you really enjoyed your experience, and that’s inspiring to me. For now, enjoy being with your family and Brooke – it’s what you need!

Reply

I used to eat pb&cheese too! It was SO good! Everyone always though that was crazy, lol!

Oh I love pb & cheese :) had some earlier in fact

Crossfit is on the agenda for tonight. KBS and Push Press. (shoulders will be dead tomorrow)

I think it’s so amazing that you are always full disclosure with your fans- you rock. I aspire to be you someday- being able to turn blogging into a job, too. I agree that it’s SO FUN to do! I teach a financial education class to high schoolers and it’s a lot of fun- but they can be taxing at times! :)
I ran in my brooks ghost- but I’m dyingggg for a pair of pure flows!:)
Thanks for being SO AWESOME!!:)

Reply

Brooke’s top bun!! I’m dying! ❤️ I don’t work right now (well, I’m a mother of two littles so let’s get real- I have a full time job haha!), but I am just finishing up my last pre-req’s before I apply for dental hygiene school! I’m so dang excited about it! I feel like a hot mess most of the time trying to fit in all my online classes and motherhood, but it will be worth it. I had an experience earlier in the year when I thought I would have to be the sole provider for me and my kids and I realized that while I have an AA degree, I would be competing for a $10 an hour job. So I promised myself I would go back to school! And I’m loving it! What would you go back to school for in the future?

I’m a physical therapy intern with a program for elder care, I love it! Unfortunately it’s only July-January, so I only have a couple more months. I ran 6.2 this morning in Newton Gravity shoes! I’m coming off a metatarsal stress fracture so it felt great to run :) for lunch I had my typical kale salad piled high with quinoa and sunflower seeds, so yummy!!

Reply

I think you are doing an amazing job at what you are doing right now…you are such an inspiration to so many of us that read your blog religiously. Keep up your amazing attitude & positive outlook…Brooke is one lucky girl. :)

flip flops and recovery/compression socks on my feet today b/c ran a marathon yesterday!! Will give my body a couple of weeks to recover but will start cross training later this week… I can’t sit still for that long!

Today I had 2 lunches- homemade minestrone soup and then because I was still hungry an hour later a 6″ turkey sub from the fabulous Subway!

Reply

you are such an amazing person (on your own!! ((you don’t need anyone else to define you!)) and an amazing mom – keep it up :)

I work during the day as marketing manager…super nerdy and I code webpages. This helps me with my evening job as a blogger – makes editing my website so much easier knowing how to use HTML and CSS.

I think I’m going to be brave and try that grilled cheese with jam…it sounds oddly delightful :)

Brooke is just the cutest thing ever! I think it’s awesome that you are able to live with your parents right now and support yourself with your blog. I was wondering too if you would go back to teaching at some point.

I’m a real estate finance lawyer. I generally enjoy it, but would definitely stay home with my kids if I could afford to do it. I had a salad with chicken and avocado for lunch today. I have 8 miles to run right after work tonight so hopefully the salad will sit well. I’m running the NYC Marathon in 20 days and can’t wait!

I did 4.47 with my jogging stroller in my addidas energy boost, which I love and may never ever take off!

I’m fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom, and have been doing that since day one, 2 1/2 years. Before that I worked in healthcare recruitment.

Lunch was a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon, sliced apple, and smoked gouda cheese…so yummy!

P.S.

I am a Speech Language Pathologist and work babies & toddlers through early intervention. I see them in their homes and have been so lucky to make my own schedule.

I think it’s awesome your parents can help out so much! I was SO jealous of my sis who moved back in with mine when her and her ex broke up, but to be completely honest, my mom paid my rent when I went through a break up in law school that left me a lot more broke than I thought I’d be (law school is super rough on relationships)…

For work, I’m a lawyer. Not sure what I’ll do when I have kids but I’m super lucky that I don’t have crazy hours.

Annnd for lunch I had.. candy. Ooops. Just grabbed some halloween candy around the office and called it good.

I need to read your secrets to blogging success so I can slowly transition away from my day job and write for a living (instead of just for an escape from said day job!). Actually, I’m very fortunate to have a fabulous job that I can do from a remote home office. It’s given me the opportunity to meet some incredible people and travel to some amazing places. But I would love to be a real writer when I grow up some day!

Thanks for sharing your plans for the nest little while! Brooke is so lucky that she will have you around a lot during this transitional time :)

It’s amazing that you can focus on the blog and Brooke for now
Your blog is a daily read for me and I just love it. I’m an HR Generalist for an environmental consulting firm in Vancouver. It’s pretty fun and challenging so I’m happy for now with it.

Hope your reunion with Brooke was the best! Love her hair in a hum with her uggs. Cutest!

I think it is such a blessing to have a job that you don’t feel like is really a true ‘job’ because you love it so much. I feel the same way about my career.

Today is my cross training day but I had an amazing weekend of back to back running! Taught spin this morning and will do some strength training in my living room tonite :) bk to running tomorrow!

It’s smart to take things a year at a time. With my divorce, my therapist told me not to make any big changes during that first year. I guess a lot of people do crazy things that sets their emotional progress back even further!

I’m a teacher…but when my baby is born, I plan on staying at home for at least a year. During that time, I want to get my masters, and eventually be a school counselor. I’ve been teaching 6 years, and it’s long enough!

I had Panera for lunch. LOVE their paninis!

Also a stay at home mom and I love it :-) it’s a huge blessing and I realize it’s not for everyone. I read this article about it and I thought it was really helpful! http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/4086126

I think Brooke will benefit so much from getting to spend so much time with you! Today I ran in my Mizuno Wave Elixir 8’s. Lunch was my usual – an apple with a turkey sandwich. I don’t have a job since I am a full time high school student! I do want to get a part time job though – running gear costs a lot of money!

Reply

I ran 13.1 (13 on the schedule but added the .1 because why not?!) in my Pure Flows. Love them, but they will need to be replaced in the next month or so.

Lunch was anything and everything I could find to replenish my salt levels: pickles, an apple, couscous and carrots, Wheat Thins and hummus. I was starving!

I’ll second that I love your willingness to share and answer questions about sensitive topics. I just found your blog a few months ago (late to the party, I know) and was immediately drawn to your warmth and honesty. You’ve handled these new developments in your life with such inspiring classiness. Stay strong, gorgeous girl.

Reply

Hey, It was so fun to meet you on Saturday at the Hit and Run 5k! I just wanted to let you know I think you are handling things with so much grace! There is no shame in living with your parents, heck you even get your own floor! If I could I would totally live with my mom :) And as a mom who worked full time till my first was almost a year and then kept working until I had my second, if you can stay home while they are little, do. If you have the support of your family and loved ones you should stay and take care of that sweet thing! (Unless of course, you want to go back to work). There are seasons for everything in life, and being able to stay home while Brooke is little is one of them. Have fun on your trail run!

Hello! My name is Natalie and I am 17. I love your blog and was so sorry to hear about your divorce. I am praying for you.
Almost a year ago I emailed you asking for advice for injured runners (when a horse like completely messed up my toe by stepping on it), your advice helped me a lot. I ended up being able to run the half marathon that I was worried about just 3 weeks later and it was my first registered half, I got 1:39!
I also wanted to let you know that I used to struggle with anorexia and now binge eating. I am trying to get through it and lose the weight I gained back. God is really helping me through this tough time and I am also turning to running like you to ease the pain.
Last but not least, I am excelling in Cross Country and also run on our gravel driveway/paved road. I am interested in purchasing my first Brooks shoes and I was wondering if you have heard anything about these: http://www.brooksrunning.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-BrooksRunning-Site/default/Product-Show?pid=120144
Thank you so much for your time! -Nat

Clearly you’re not the only one who likes the ((()))) )

I love my new Adidas Boost. Seriously, try them. You won’t regret it.

I’m a Physician Assistant at a family practice office! I get to take care of people who need my help… I truly love my job!

I was a a stay-at-home mom when my divorce hit so I totally understand the one mile at a time – that was so me! I just figured it would all fall into place for me and I couldn’t think about anything more than the moment I was living in. I couldn’t think far ahead because the divorce process and moving and raising my son was enough at the time to deal with….I am grateful that this worked for me, that I had support from my fam as you do and that I was home with my son for the first 7 years. I then moved on to part time work and now am working on receiving my Nutrition certification as well as freelance writing and publishing a book. It will all work out for you as well. Enjoy that little girl of yours- those moments go too fast and I am so grateful to have those memories with my son – I talk to him about those times together every day. Just to see if he remembers lol. And some of it he does.

I just hit the eliptical this morning for 25 min and did some weights – I usually take Mondays off from running bc my long runs are on Sunday. Yesterday I did 13 miles in my saucony ride 6 (MCM in t-minus TWO weeks!).

I am a real estate attorney (I work for a firm that represents financial institutions in forelcosure proceedings). I love my job and being in court every single day and I get to work from home. I don’t have children – been with my bf for over 2 1/2 years so hopefully there will be a ring and some kiddos in the future. I would love to be able to stay home or keep a job like the one I have now but we shall see. You are very lucky to be able to stay home and spend this time w/Brooke. My mother was a stay at home mom and it is such an important job – I think it makes a world of difference to have your mom there for you when you are a kiddo. I have to admit I think it is not so great you have to pay rent – my parents would never in a million years accept that from me – especially going through a rough time like a divorce BUT to each his own and I am not in any way trying to judge you or your family. It seems like you have a WONDERFUL family and everyone has their own circumstances, reasons, etc. and you are increadibly strong to be able to share as much as you do with perfect strangers like me ;)

I had a cereal for lunch :)

Keep your chin up – again I think you are unbelievably strong and are handling yourself with such grace not many people show during tough times (I did family law for about a year or so and people can be pretty nasty).

First let me say that I think your probably the funniest person I know. And I really don’t know you. But I kinda feel like I do a little after following your blog for the last couple years. Motherhood is the MOST rewarding job in the world. I have 4 and cherish every moment. I think your doing an awesome job. I can tell how much you love that little girl and how much she loves you!! So I just signed up format first full marathon(Ogden) after many half’s and running for about 7 years. Yea I’m scared. But your kinda my inspiration. Today I did a tempo run in my brooks launches but I’m considering the pureflows?? And for lunch leftover Italian chicken. Hope you have a great day!!

Reply

Ogden is a fantastic marathon, you will love it!

Reply

Ok..that top-knot that Brooke is rockin’ is just too cute…. I die!!!

Reply

I ran in my Ravenna 4’s today, too! My IT bands are irritated from my marathon just over a week ago, however, so I will be easing back into my Pure Flows for a while…the Flows don’t give me enough support for really long runs, but for some mysterious reason, even when my IT bands are at their angriest, I feel no IT band pain in my Flows. Must be something to do with the lower drop?

I think it’s wonderful that you are able to be at home with Brooke right now. I will never regret the almost 10 years I took off from my “professional” career to be at home with my girls. Right now I just work 2 hours a day at their school and will be looking for something closer to full-time very soon, but I have loved every second that I have been able to spend with them!!

Reply

I think that is great you are able to do what you are doing during this time. I ran in my Brooks Ghosts today. They are my favorite and currently the only thing I run in. I do want to try some lighter shoes eventually but right now the Ghosts are it. I am a nanny and have been for 8 years. Prior to that I was a preschool teacher. I might want to teach again after I have kids and they go to school but for now this is perfect for me.

Awesome that your mom is able to help out with Brooke – that must save a lot of money, even if you do work from home right now.
No running for me today, but I did hit up a yoga class!

I haven’t run today. But I’ll wear my nike flex experience cheapies until Christmas when I get my pure flows.

I’m a stay at home mom to my 3 kids- 9, 5, 1, and have been for 2 years. For the 7 years before that, I was an accountant at a local CPA firm. I’ll go back eventually. But for now, I love it. I’m blogging some. But I get discouraged because of the lack of response. I mean I know I’m not interesting at all. But I’d love for it to be my job :)

I had leftover homemade pizza for lunch.

You deserve the time to be a stay at home mommy to sweet little Brooke and soak up that time with her. If that means living at home with your parents, then hey, why not? :)

I ran in the Ravenna 4’s today. Just a short 4.5 miles. I’ve been a stay at home mommy for just over 6 years, since my son was born. It’s hard work, but definitely worth it. And I had a pb&j for lunch today.

I always put strawberry jam on my breakfast sandwiches (english muffin, egg, cheese, jam) so I definitely don’t know why I haven’t put it on my grilled cheese yet!! I KNOW I’d love it- trying that soon! As for work, my hubby and I both quit our jobs a year ago to be able to work from home, and we LOVE it! We own a series of websites, and we both do freelance stuff, plus he has a part-time teaching job. I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love to do, and from my own home to boot! Especially now that I’m pregnant (!!!) it makes it so much nicer!!! :)

Not to be too forward, but when you say that the blog has become a job for you, does that mean you get some income and/or opportunities for income from it? I am only asking because I’m interested in the financial opportunities of blogging. Sorry if that’s too intrusive.

Not too intrusive:) yes, I get an income from the blog. It is currently my only income.

I agree with everyone else–it’s awesome you can afford to stay home for now. And I love reading your blog so I for one hope you continue it like this for many more years!

I used to work in finance, but once I had my 3rd kid (he just turned two yesterday) I decided to stay home for now. My other two are in high school and elementary school, so I stay pretty busy taking everyone to their various activities.

No run for me today, it was a rest day. Lunch was eggs, toast and sautéed cabbage. It was delicious.

That’s so nice of you to share such personal details with us because it’s definitely not any of our business! You’re so personable and likeable. Sorry you and Brooke have to go through this. I’m glad you have a supportive family.

What would you go back to school for?

I’m excited to see what Brooke will be for Halloween! You guys should match. :D

I’m in school right now so I’m not working! Just going to grad school.

For lunch I had broccoli cheddar soup from Costco. Delicious!

My lunch today is home made taquitos

We lived in a condo before buying our house in May and one of my favorite things was getting downstairs to the treadmill early in the morning- before anyone else woke up to workout and I’d run in the dark. It was on the 23rd floor of the building so the view was nothing to complain about if all of the sudden your internet connection to your ipad went out. :)

p.s. I’m a teacher… and it really is a great profession when you have kiddos (not that I do, but I can imagine.)

Janae!!! We have the same shoes! :D I love the Ravenna 4s =)

Parenthetical asides are the best! I (over)use them too, but can’t stop won’t stop.

I work as an EMT and CPT in an ER (not on the ambulance though), and I’m probably (hopefully! I hear by Friday!) starting nursing school in January. The twelve hour shifts are really difficult with kids, because three days a week I’m either not home until late or I’m out the door before anyone else is up. Or I work night shift and I’m up all night and then barely sleeping and I am cranky!

I moved home during my divorce (from the Bay Area also, but to more north Nor. Cal, heh), and my parents’ help and support was invaluable. Even though I got engaged and moved out, they still help a ton with the kids on my work days! It’s wonderful to have that family support, and especially when you need it :) Take your time going back to work.

Reply

I’m icing a sore hip. No running today.
Nothing special for lunch. I went back to school after my divorce and got my nursing degree. I’m now a flight nurse for AirMed at the UofU! Love my job and my hard work payed off with 4 awesome kids that value hard work and see what it takes to take care of themselves.
Good luck!

You are doing just great. What are you hoping to study sometime down the track? Change = scary, but change also = opportunities. And that’s so, so exciting for you :)

No running for me so far today because I could not drag myself out of bed this morning… but maybe I’ll fit one in later, or go to the gym after work. Whatever I do, it’ll definitely be in my trusty Innov8 shoes.

I work in marketing/media/PR at a health organisation. I’m very useful at trivia nights if the questions are about diseases ;) I really enjoy my job but I would also like to go back and do more study at some point.

Lunch today will be a leftover stirfry of tofu, veggies, noodles and cashews. It is 9:52am and I cannot wait.

Reply

I have been running in Saucony’s pro ride 5’s for quite some time now. I just ordered a pair of the Ride 6’s and cannot WAIT for them to come! I am wayyyy overdue for some new shoes.

I work as a middle school (8th grade) school counselor in an urban “low SES” school. I love it most days but it can be quite a challenge. Running definitely keeps my stress levels down. :)

Lunch today consisted of the reliable ham and cheese sandwich with an apple and a Diet Coke.

So glad that your sidekick is back! I missed seeing pictures of her for a few days. :)

Brooke is adorable! I have read your blog for a while and it is one of my favorite and probably the most inspiring one I read. Thanks for keeping your readers updated! You are such a strong and amazing woman, Janae! It’s great you can take this time to stay home with Brooke. And I bet your family loves having you around! Thanks for sharing and being such a great inspiration!

I ran in my Nike Frees today. They have holes on the bottom and I get rocks in my shoes. Love them though.
I am a librarian and have been working at my current place for 6 years.

I think you are an awesome mother and you set a great example for everyone! I didn’t run today, I did strength training! I wear brooks adrenaline GTS 12! I love them. I have almost 300 miles on them, prolly should replace them soon, not sure how many miles a person should put on a shoe?

Reply

I love you perspective about taking it one year at a time. You never know where life will take you! I didn’t wear any running shoes today :( (recovering from my marathon on Saturday). I think it so awesome that you can blog for a living right now while spending as much time as possible with Brooke. I think we would all be really sad if you had to cut back on your blogging!

Reply

You rock – if everyone was half as good a mommy as you, the world would be a better place. Stay positive – everything is okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end. Sidenote: Brooke is super-cute! Happy running!

Reply

From the kid perspective (even though I’m (sort of) grown up now), I LOVED having my mom stay home with me when I was growing up! You are definitely lucky to have a not-a-job job that allows you stay with Brooke!! :)

I guess my work currently is to use up as many resources as possible (AKA – I’m ~still~ a student…) but in 3.75 years (yes, I’m counting down!), I will be a doctor!

And PS – your blog is the first place I go when I’m in a running slump (like right now!). Thanks for being a constant source of encouragement!! :)

Reply

I am a frequent reader but haven’t ever commented. But I just wanted to let you know that your strength and positivity during this difficult time for you is inspiring. Taking care of Brooke (and yourself) is a job in itself. Taking time for you and her is the best thing you could have done. Kudos to you girl! :)

You are doing the best thing by taking your time to do whatever you need to do. Receiving the love and help of friends and family is such a beautiful act. It is as important as being on the giving end! I’ve been “working” in the homemaker capacity for 18 years…ever since I started taking care of my stepkids and continuing with the kids I birthed. I used to work in retail as a means of supporting my athletic habit/aspirations. I did that for about 12 years. Lunch was chocolate and chicken…a winning combo if ever there was one ;-)

Reply

I took a rest day today… I didn’t want to, but I’ve been feeling so burnt out lately!

I work in social media for a major retail brand…. So there’s that :)

I had an open faced tuna salad sandwich & side salad for lunch !

My grandma always used to have jam and cheese sandwiches. Not a huge jam fan so probably wouldn’t be for me.
I ran in my ASIC Kayano 19’s today. Currently I’m rotating between 2 pair of the 19’s and the 20’s which I just got Oct. 1! Oh yeah,, once in a while throw my Ravenna 4’s on but they have quite a few miles on them.
Lunch today was about 10 spoonfuls of Jif Whips and about 10 other bad things that I shouldn’t have eaten. Darn it I love food!
You are so blessed to be able to focus on yourself and Brooke for the next year or so.

Reply

It’s wonderful that you can stay with Brooke – and with your parents for now. I think you’ve struck a good balance or support and independence. Right now not only do you need/want your parents, Brooke does, too! I know she is loving being with so much family all the time. So I think that works out perfectly. Hope you enjoyed your reunion day with Brooke. Looks like she had a ball!

Reply

I did some cross training today…weights and elliptical…at the same time for better workout! I noticed you haven’t been doing much cross training lately. Is that intentional? Just curious! Running is my favorite but I make myself do other stuff at least one day a week…usually!

Lunch was a bunch of odds and ends…but all healthy stuff!

I work and have a 15 month old…I actually enjoy the balance between having a professional life and being a mom. I work from home 2 days a week and have a very flexible schedule and a great team. It’s working well for now!

Reply

My lunch was fritos dipped in cottage cheese…don’t judge until you try it!!!

I am a stay at home mom first and foremost AND a Mary Kay Director. I have been in Mary Kay for 10 years and cannot imagine a more flexible “Mommy job”. I never wanted to put my kids in daycare (ages 8, 7 and 5 now) or have to ask off work to go on field trips, dr’s appts, etc…and Mary Kay has been such a blessing to my family.

You stay home with your baby for AS LONG as possible-it’s by far the most important job, and you will never get these years back again.
I ran in my Saucony Guides-love them.
My job is vascular ultrasound (imaging veins and arteries)
For lunch I had roasted chicken breast and roasted veggies with some fresh pineapple for dessert-it was yummy. And of course for supper I’m having FMW-haha.

Pure Flow 2s!! So awesome that you get to stay home with Brooke and make money blogging. Def something I would love to do…until then I work for the government.

Lunch was breakfast…eggs, toast, and applesauce.

Reading this post just made me cry Janae. As you probably know I’ll be moving four times in 2013 and have never felt so unstable in my life. After moving to Texas, I’m going back home for a few weeks before the marathon. At age 23, I don’t have a job, relying on my savings as well as Tim and my parents (who I’m extremely close with). I have absolutely no idea what I will be doing in the next year and take it one step at a time.

Reading this truly inspires and comforts me that other people are in the same shoes. I know you are in a difficult place right now but seriously you are so inspiring. You are doing what makes you happy. My dad once told me a while back, you are successful if you are happy and you truly embody that.

Reply

That must be so amazing to be able to blog as your “job.” I think that blogging for a living wouldn’t even feel like work because it’s so fun! You are so lucky you get to be with Brooke all day and do what you love to do! You deserve it =)

Hey! I just wanted to tell you that I am 27 and have two small children (9 months and 2.5 years) and I am living in my moms basement too! My husband is working away all winter. When you have young children you need all of the emotional support you can get to parent the best you can. Taking advantage of your close relationship with your parents is not only beneficial to you, but it’s also great for Brooke and your mom and dad. It’s special that they get to watch her grow up and I’m sure they love it. I truly hope you don’t feel bad about staying with your parents – it’s the right place for you and Brooke to be right now.

Brooke’s smile on the swing makes my heart melt!

I swam today with flippers so no shoes for me. Lunch was a fantastic roast beef club sandwich.

I was fired from a job (yes, fired, and it was not a surprise) at age 32 (am 39 now). I moved in with my parents for a short time. Wound up not being long as I was able to quickly find another (much better) job but was so thankful for them & a safe place to land at that point in my life.

Reply

I’ve been wondering about the job thing but didn’t want to ask because it’s really none of my business. ;) But thanks for being open and sharing! As you know, I’m a stay at home momma, too, and I love it. I am so thankful to have this opportunity. Hugs to you and Brookers!

I love your blog :)

I am also going through seperation after 6 years with my boyfriend. It is extremely difficult, but exercise has been my saviour. I’m pretty sure I’ve set all kinds of new PR because of this seperation so that is a positive haha! I envy that you have family close by, I moved to a big city and my family and closest friends are 16 hour drive away, thankf goodness for airplanes, face time and the blog world to entertain me haha!

That grilled cheese with jam looks like it needs to be my next lunch. Also I can’t get over Brooke’s bun.. what a cutie!
Today’s run was in my Nike Frees. I used to need a hardcore stability shoe but my stride has changed since then. Currently ogling the Mizuno Sayonaras to put in the rotation…
I work as a graduate research assistant. While it pays the bills, I can’t wait to get a “real person job.”
Lunch was a leftover jerk chicken sub + grapes + salt n vinegar kettle chips. So good!

Hi Janae – my hubby and I own 2 companies – I run the staffing service (been doing that since 1986) and the hubby runs the Corporate/Personal empowerment company. We are super duper lucky cause we have always been available to our daughter – she is 17 and her Dad and I have always been really involved – didn’t miss a milestone. Working for myself and focusing on Mom duties until Nicolette is 18 is my top job :)

I think it is great that you are able to stay with your parents adn support yourself while staying home with Brooke. I work with children’s nutrition programs and would love to be able to stay home with kiddos one day when the time comes ;)

I am a nurse and have been at the same hospital for a little over 4 years. I like it because I work 12 hour shifts, so I only have to work 3 days a week. I hate working such long hours because I don’t have time to do anything on days that I work, but having the majority of the week off is awesome (and will be great when I have kids). I also love talking to people, learning about them, and knowing that I can make a huge impact in their lives.

Watching an iPad in the dark is 1 million times better! I’m sorry….I just can’t bring myself to think jelly on a grilled cheese would be good!
4 days till my marathon!!!!

I used to teach 8th grade English, but now my job consists of taking care of my kids, keeping our house in order, and making healthy meals—stay at home mom! Hardest job ever–and most rewarding!

I’d say stay home as long as life allows…you’re a fantastic mom, and with the life changes, she can really use your being there all the time. plus you’ll never get these years back. my mom stayed at home, and we were poor as all, but looking back I’m so glad.
I’m a pediatric optometrist who runs in Brooks pure flows 2 :)

Today was my rest day after 20 miles and a nice fall yesterday (err! Dang uneven sidewalks!) But I probably would have ran in my Mizunos. Lunch today was cold veggie pizza in the car on the way to the chiropractor. I’m an English teacher (don’t judge my grammar!) and this is my 2nd full time year, although I taught part time and subbed for 3 years prior to that. I love my job most days ;)

Twins!!! I ran in my brooks Ravenna 4s today for my 10k. Love them :).
Aw I’m in a similar situation as u and I’m facing moving in with my parents while I save up and trying to figure out the job scenario as I’ve been a stay at home mom for the past 4 years. It’s tough! We will power thru and come out stronger!!

I want your treadmill. It’s at the top of my wish list trust me. Glad u have your best buddy back safe and sound.

Reply

I wish I could have run today :( At least another month of no running for me since I have a femoral stress fracture BUT I start cross training this week! YAY!

I am not working at the moment. Unemployed but looking for a job every single day – praying and hoping something comes along! Its a bit tricky right now because we will be moving in about 8-9 months since my husband will be graduating medical school. Not many people want to hire you when they find that out or know that :) Still praying and hoping though!

I think it’s really brave of you to be ok talking about your life to so many strangers including me here all the way from New Zealand. I don’t expect that you will talk about every aspect of your personal life here but this is what makes your blog and you so special. Thanks for sharing and I think you have a fabulous family to be there for you. I think that being able to talk about your current hardship helps and shows that you are healing well and moving on.

On a different note, that is one spectacular treadmill. You can check your running data and your readers’ reply at the same time? I need that treadmill in my life!!

ohh look another new zealander and we posted at the same time! Mid afternoon work slump time:P

ohh it think this is my first comment! I would love to know what you’re interested in going back to school for!

Also, obviously not right away, but i do think that studying while you have a baby and are not otherwise tied down to work commitments (ie your blog work is flexible) is a great way of doing it. That way you can fit it in once she’s down for the night and not worry about being exhausted for work in the morning :)

No run today.

I do social media marketing and website design and I’m also a part-time activity aide at a nursing home.

Lunch today was leftover 3 bean chili

It is so amazing that Brooke has her mother at home. This age is very important to her development and you are doing the best job.

Right now I m going to university, studying BA Physiotherapy, so I don’t work. I hope to make a lot of money at some point to pay back my parents :)

Whatever you choose to do, you will be amazing at! I love how you’re taking this one step at a time. That’s SO important. Maybe your blog could be something full time. Heck, I love it, so I would support you 100%! Taking care of a cutie like Brooke IS a full time job, and you are amazing at that too! You go girl!

You are amazing Janae! You seriously are! :)

I think your mom should get a sponsor slot on the sidebar. For buying the frozen yogurt. Necessary for training and all.

I think you are so fabulous – let me start with that!
This morning I ran in Brooks Ghost 6 (which is my favorite version of this shoe!).

I’m a patient advocate and I’ve been doing this for 7 years. I’m also a running coach. I got my RRCA cert and started a little business this past summer. I mainly work with new runners. I have a couple of new marathoners on my client list though.

Lunch is hard boiled eggs, roasted veggies and a little curried quinoa. Tapering for Baystate Marathon which is this coming Sunday!

I’m a teacher and I say you have the right idea! I would get out if I could. LOVE my kids to death but the demands on us are insane. Every year it’s more work, more pressure, but the same pay. Cost of living keeps going up though, so I also work part time at a running store and that’s a sweet gig!

I attempted to run in Brooks Adrenalines but made it a quarter mile before I felt awful so I walked home. FAIL.

That is an amazing picture of Brooke in the fall scene! Just gorgeous! Can’t believe it was taken with an iPhone (and I say that as a incredibly loyal iPhone user).

You are such a wonderful and strong person, Janae! I can’t imagine what you’re going through but so glad that you have little Brooke to help you out :)

I too have no idea what I want to do. All I know is that I don’t have the money to go back to school right now & I hate my job…

You are an awesome person Janae, and I have no doubt you will figure out what you will do when the time is right!

I ran in my new Brooks Defyance, I LOVE them and am a total Brooks convert now!

I am a medical alliance manager for a pharma company. Been here for almost 8 years and I LOVE it!

Lunch was a turkey and avocado sandwich!

I haven’t run yet today, but I’ll be doing Yasso 800s in my Asics Gel Kayano’s.

I am a software engineer — I got extremely lucky and my boss allows me to work from home every day, I only go into the office two mornings a week. I get to pick my kids up from school and have so much flexibility — so seriously blessed!

I still have an hour ’til lunch, probably a PB&J though :)

omg that bun on her head! TOO CUTE! And I’m currently job searching… graduated law school in may, took and PASSED the bar exam, and now… nada. Haha just looking for jobs…

Janae, your blog is now one of my favorites to read. Brooke is just getting cuter by the day! I’m wogging (walk/jog) tonight in my Asics. I just finished eating a delicious spinach and mushroom pizza and currently work at a cement plant; however, I am interviewing this week for a position in Oil and Gas chemical sales.

What a blessing to have the wonderful emotional support of your amazing family! I am really happy that you have them to help you out while you navigate your way to the new normal:) You have a really great attitude with everything–“one year/one mile at a time”. Yeah!

I am also delighted that your awesome blog allows for you to not feel pressure to go back to a 9-5 and that you can enjoy Brookers and your running and friends and life to the maximum! Right on, Janae! I am going back to teaching after mat leave in January and I am SAAAD but going to be positive about it (only going back Mon-Wed for now so that is a blessing, part time teaching, two days off with my little man).

Love your smile! It’s always there and that is amazing.

Ha! Thank you for confirming my completely appropriate affinity for cheese-peanut butter-jelly sandwiches!

Immediately after I graduated I taught for a year in a 7th grade autism classroom. I was completely overwhelmed and didn’t have any support (I was the lead teacher at a ripe old age of 21) so I ultimately decided to switch directions at the end of the school year… I pursued my passion in event planning. Now, 2 years later, I’m going back to teaching – I’m currently subbing and applying to grad schools. One of the best things about teaching is that it will always be there when you’re ready to go back :) And there’s nothing as rewarding as teaching, touching a child’s life in the most positive way possible.

I have been a Surgical ICU nurse for 5 years now. I enjoy it although I wish I could be home more with my kids. Your very lucky to spend this time at home with Brooke I’m on maternity leave with my second right now and loving it.

I am not cleared for running yet so I stare at my shoes right now :-( saucony guide 6s.

Lunch was an apple, bread and chicken/rice/broccoli casserole.

You’re always so positive! It’s great!

I teach high school English.

I was going to go to Spinning tonight, so I brought my most worn out pair of running shoes. But a friend called and invited me for a run, and since I’m behind on my half marathon training, I’ve decided that’s the better choice. Wish I’d brought my more cushioned shoes, though!

Looking at life (or a run) “one mile at a time” is hard for me and the way you are able to do it is inspiring.

I think you are doing Amazing! And taking care of a one year old is definitely work! As is blogging :) I stay at home with my 1 and 6 year olds, nanny part time out of my home for a friends 1 year old and am starting up a photography business, so if you ever find yourself in Denver needing some pictures of that adorable girl you know who to talk t0 ;)

I haven’t run yet as I’m just SUCH a new runner (can’t even call myself that yet) and am doing every other day for now to try to avoid shin splints that I used to get when I ran in high school- so far so good!

Lunch was delicious ikea meatballs but I really want to try the grilled cheese with jam! THat looks amazing

I ran in Brooks Ghost 6 today. They are my first pair of Brooks and oh what a difference a new pair of shoes make!

I work from home which is great since I have 4 little kiddos. I’ve been a massage therapist for 10 years now and I’ve also been a myopractor for 3 years.

I love that you blog and I look forward to your posts every day! I’m so glad that it helps you earn some money, especially in your time of transition.

I definitely am in the same routine of watching Parenthood while running on the treadmill! It seriously makes the miles fly right by!!! I have always thought and continue to think what a great mom you are to Brooke!!! I can only imagine how close you two will be as she continues to get older :) hey maybe you can be like Lorelei and Rory on Gilmore Girls… I could definitely see you two sharing that kind of mother/daughter bond!

It sounds like you’ve got a great plan, and I’m glad it’s working out for you.

I am in my eighth year as an at-risk counselor at three elementary schools. It comes with a lot of stress, heartache, and laughter, and there is NEVER a dull moment.

I ran in my Asics Kayanos, as always. I had a chicken salad for lunch with Olive Garden salad dressing (the only thing that gets me excited about eating salad). ;-)

I definitely don’t think there is any hurry for you to go anywhere, but where you are right now. You have the support and love from your family. You couldn’t ask for anything more!
I work with a sheriff’s office and have been there for the past 9 years which is a little difficult being a single mom and working midnights, or evenings, or day work. it varies.

Thank you for sharing. I’m going through a similar situation. None of my friends or family have gone through anything like this so even though they are supportive, I can feel very alone at times, and reading your blog and seeing your positive attitude really helps lift my spirits.

You have such a great relationship with your parents! It’s awesome they can be an emotional support for you & Brooke during this hard time :s

I’m a new full-time mom and have been at it for three months! Prior to that, I was a corporate graphic designer but left my career once my little man arrived :) Your blog is awesome and it seems like it would be a fun job – and a great opportunity to work + spend time with your daughter!

I’m glad that you don’t have to make any big changes that take you away from Brooke right now (you’ve got plenty of other big changes to deal with). When/if it’s time to do something different, you’ll know.

I am co-owner of a shoe company. We make comfy shoes. Some are really great for post-running. Or, at least as a runner, I think so. :) (California Footwear Co. — not going to put the URL because I don’t want to seem like I’m selling on your website).

I had to laugh at your comment about being too lazy to go upstairs to get your favorite pair of running shoes. My running buddy and I talk about how we’re going out on a 10-mile+ run, but are too lazy to get that (fill in the blank) that we forgot upstairs.
