I was going to try to fit my run in before teaching spin this morning but then I remembered it was an easy run day so I could take Brooke in the BOB after spin class. We had a blast together like usual but since my body is used to running in 50 degree weather early in the morning the 70 degree weather made me dream about an extra large lemonade from Mcdonalds for 90% of the run.
So we ended the run at one and I drank more liquid than I ever have in my life (I refilled my water bottle(S) there too).
Brooke thinking about how crazy I am:
Speaking of Brooke… you know how some kids have a blanket that they want to take everywhere with them? Brooke likes to carry around one of my running socks (don’t worry it is clean) with her everywhere.
Back to the run, it was great to be able to go out on the running trail since I was running later in the day when it is full of people. I miss that trail.
I found my absolute DREAM backyard. I went over to my friend’s house this morning and we worked in her garden for a little while (by work I mean pick some fruit, eat some fruit and repeat). She has 52 fruit trees and a crazy amount of different types of vegetables. This is just a small part of her garden. Can you imagine having all of the best produce just hanging out in her backyard? I guess it takes a little bit of work though too;)
The kiddos hung just played and Brooke went crazy over the nectarines….good thing I brought a bunch back with me.
Random but this wouldn’t be my blog without randomness…..Just when I thought Cinnamon Toast Crunch could not possibly be any more delicious.
I bet you can guess what I had for lunch…. It rhymes with micken and a pweet sotato.

HELP LAUREN OUT:
What sounds the absolute best to you (food and drink wise) after a run!!!?!?! (nothing can be an answer because sometimes that is the case too!)
Do you have a backyard? Is it big? Small? Do you ever spend time back there?
-We have an awesome backyard, we just share it with 200 other people.
How was your run today? Anyone else have a hot run?
A reader needs your help….she pulled her hamstring and was wondering if any of you have experienced this and how you tried to stay in running shape while in rehabilitation?

We have a backyard that I do not spend a lot of time in because it is HOT back there (we have a east/west facing house – lame) and we have nothing back there for the kids to play on. Luckily we have a park next door though. We do have a garden back there, but I do not work in it. Ross does all that and then I eat the fruits of his labor. I am a stellar wife like that ;) That back yard you were in looks amazing! It is so awesome to just walk out and pick the fruits and veggies you will be eating in minutes.
I had a hot run yesterday. Holy crap. I was a sweaty mess and as a result there was some chafing….and I may have cried in the shower.
Speaking of PB. Did you see my IG? I saw new PB and PB with chocolate pop tarts at the store the other day. I also so a new dark chocolate peanut butter with white choc chips and a raspberry swirl in it. I have been dreaming about it. I want to go back and get it. But am afraid of the damage I will do. These companies are out to get me I tell ya!
I love Brookers smile so much. And I am glad you had a great run – finishing it off with some lemonade was genius!
Amanda @ .running with spoons.
Now that’s definitely a gorgeous backyard… The only thing missing is a watermelon patch ;) My parents have a really big backyard, but I have… a balcony. Still, gotta work with what we’ve got, so I planted a few nice flowers and looking outside at all the colors always makes me smile.
Wendy @ New Moms Talk
We have a back yard that we share with 2 others, but we’re moving soon. That means we’re house hunting long distance, and oh… the options! A lot of prayers are going it combined with a lot of faith.
What sounds good after a run depends on the time of year, the weather, and so much more. Sometimes water, sometimes a smoothie, sometimes water with lemon, sometimes…
I just listen to my body and let it guide me… and I hope I have hand what it needs post run!
Jessica @ FromtheKitchentotheRoad
It has been so hot and humid lately that all I want after a run is about a gallon of ice cold water. I normally don’t ice my water but lately that is all I want.
Amy @ Writing While Running
I love that Brooke loves your sock, but hates her own!
MartinaNYC
After a tough run, I crave chocolate milk (after a huge glass of water)!!!
Day off for me today-running the Pride Run (5 miles) in Central Park tomorrow!
Corrine @ EatRunWine
After a run, I ALWAYS crave orange juice. I guess that’s similar to lemonade. Chocolate almond milk is a close second.
I was going to run 6 miles after work, but it’s 92 degrees and super humid here in Georgia, so I deemed today my rest day and Sunday will be an early morning Sunday Funday run instead! 92 is a little too much of a “hot run” even for me- and I’m used to mid-to-upper 80s!
I pulled my hamstring in soccer once. It’s no fun, I don’t envy her! It depends how bad it hurts, but if she can run at all, she needs to stick to flat routes and forget about competitive pacing- run whatever feels comfortable. It’s about re-strengthening the hurt muscle, not improving or maintaining the same level of running fitness. Starting yoga will help too. Just don’t push too hard!
Lisa
PB toast crunch that sounds amazing!!! Peanut butter and cinnamon just go hand and hand together, well I think so at least.
And I kind of love the fact that Brooke carries your sock around, that’s so cute.
My parents have a big backyard so I’ve been begging them to plant a few veggies for me, so I don’t have to spend so darn much at the grocery store. Here’s hoping that works;)
[email protected]
That is a SWEET backyard!! I could totally live there & eat all the things. :)
After a tough workout I crave ice water!
Missy @Miles with Missy
I had a very windy, kinda warm run this morning :) And it was glorious. I am coming back post plantar fasciitis and every run is hard right now. But worth it.
A big glass of chocolate milk is a must after every run!
We do have a big backyard, but our neighbor’s is nicer, so that is where we spend a lot of time outside :)
Leah @ Running with the Hayneses
Super hot run here! My sister is an AT–she can definitely help this reader. I’ll send her over here!
Hannah @ Running with the Hayneses
Some good things for your reader with the hamstring strain are swimming and biking while she’s recovering. Also, make sure to lightly stretch, ice, and slowly begin strengthening once the initial pain goes away!
Marie
Thanks so much (I’m the reader Janae mentioned)! I have a low hamstring pull and I have been looking into swimming—any specific swimming movements? The pain is slowly minimizing, so light stretching is going to be starting soon.
Hannah @ Running with the Hayneses
If you have a kick board, some light kicking would be good for it. Otherwise, freestyle or backstroke would be good cardio. You can check out our blog for more cross training and injury advice!
Marie
Thanks! I will check out your blog too!
Jackie
Brooke is too cute with the sock! Haha!
Becca
No running for me as I’ve got a cold and all I want to do after work is go to bed!
Best post-run foods: cold watermelon and cold beer.
Michelle @ 3cheaprunners
The backyard at my house is only enjoyed late at night – when we head out to the hot-tub…but we have a HUGE yard at our cottage and that is where we spend our weekends (year round)…the kids luv beling outside there!
april
oh i would LOVE that backyard! i’d eat so many nectarines, too, if i had them growing in my backyard. they’re one of my fave summer fruits.
that’s so cute that brooke carries around your running sock – maybe you have a future track star on your hands ;)
Anastasia
I had a high hamstring tear that required 8 months of PT. Boo! Pool running and cycling were recommended as ways to keep up the cardio without further injuring my hammy. Absolutely no stretching! Once the reader feels better, she needs to strengthen her hammy to prevent it from happening again.
We just remodeled the backyard and I love it! Fire pit for roasting s’mores!
Emily Jensen
I love fruit smoothies with Whey protein after I run!
I have a pretty average size back yard for the neighborhood I live in. We have two dogs – so it’s big enough to be their own personal jungle.
I still need to go for my run, I’ll probably go after I finish rolling out my legs.
I’ve never pulled my hamstring but my dad did and went swimming while not running.
Jen @ milesandblessings
Hmmm…depends on the run. I like a piece of bread with peanut butter. I didn’t used to but have also grown to like chocolate milk! It is the cheapest recovery drink!
I have a rather large backyard, I should know because it took me forever to mow it last week! We spend some time out there…but not tons.
I need to hire someone to come do landscaping! The gardens and weeds are overtaking parts of it :).
Run was great…perfect day! I was going to do some speed or a long run but I wasn’t feeling it so I just went out for a nice relaxing run. It ended up being 9 miles so it was almost long :)
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More
I would love a great garden but really don’t have the desire to do the required work.
After a run, I want water and then a smoothie, usually with dark chocolate almond milk.
Alyssa @ See This Girl Run
That garden looks awesome! I just wouldn’t want to take care of it :)
It totally depends on what I craved. Sometimes nothing. Sometimes just water. Sometimes I’m STARVING and want something huge from Cafe Rio.
Erica
Summer
DMD
or cold watermelon.
Winter
DMD
or a slice of orange.
Gillian
Watermelon!!! Lots of watermelon after a hot and sweaty run. Except when it’s -20 outside then I crave coffee and a donut ;)
My parents have an acreage so my dad and I plotted two big vegetable gardens. I also made a smaller third one for pumpkins!! Bc they are my favorite thing ever lol :)

After I get finished with a run in the summertime I always want like a creamy fruit smoothie or watermelon. I haven’t ran yet today. I have 4 miles of speedwork planned at about 7:30 tonight. If I run any earlier I will die of the heat. It’s literally 100 degrees out there. I like running in the evenings best. I’ve never experienced a pulled hamstring but I have had experience with running injuries. Best advice: Ice, Ice, and more ice.
MILF Runner
That is a fabulous backyard! Definitely a lot of work, but that kind of work has such a huge pay-off. Our yard is smallish but well-used :)
Debbie @ Deb Runs...
I love eating a Subway sandwich after a long run, as long as the run wasn’t too hot! If it’s extremely hot, I don’t have as much of an appetite.
Today was my day off from running, but tomorrow I’ll run ten miles. We have a great back yard with a creek and lots of wildlife! We spend a lot of time on our deck enjoying it!
Have a great weekend!
Kay
Right away, nothing. Later chocolate covered nuts and carby carbs!
No backyard in my apartment :/
Rest day today
Marie
Thanks everyone who commented on dealing with a pulled hamstring. I’m really glad I reached out to Janae and that she posted it on here. I appreciate all the information, and any other information, please share. I have a low hamstring pull and while it’s not as serious as it could be (not quite a grade 2, more like 1.5) I know I need to take extra care since I have three big races coming up (soonest is last day of August) so any tips will help! I know there isn’t a miracle cure (wish there was) and I have met with my Dr but hearing from other runners and/or anyone who has dealt with a pulled hamstring is really helpful. Thanks again!
Kristin @ A Mom on the Run
After a run, all I ever want is a big glass of cold water. I can’t eat for a while afterward. Well, maybe I could eat watermelon :)
We have a great backyard – enough room to run around and play with the kids and dogs. We have a swing set, sand table, and tons of outside toys. We love hanging out back there, when it’ snot insanely hot.
Today was a rest day for me.
Nicole @ Work in Sweats Mama
Our house sits on an acre+ so we have a big front & back yard. Our back yard slopes down quite a bit, so the girls mostly play out front. They love to climb in their red wagon & beg me to pull them around the yard. It’s a great workout for mommy! I love to make smoothies after hot runs. Frozen bananas make them extra creamy. Yum!
Britt @ BrittsRunningStyle
Didn’t run today. Had it off :) Doing a short 1-2 miler tomorrow and then 12 on Sunday! After I run I drink lots of water, but I’m never hungry until a couple hours later. And then I want carbs :)
Rebecca
I’m with MartinaNYC! I crave chocolate milk after long runs and long bikes! There’s nothing better. But after races, I always look for WATERMELON!!!
That’s an amazing backyard too!!! Being from Michigan, our garden is only inches high and it’s almost July! Patience, patience
Danica @ It's Progression
It was crazy windy here today so I took my run to the treadmill – I did 10 miles while watching part of both Kelly & Michael and The View. It was exactly what I needed today :)
Marissa
I’m just wondering if you have any pics of Brooke not smiling?! She has the best smile :)
We just moved into our house in March and while we do have a backyard, it doesn’t have a pool yet which is pretty much a necessity where we live ;)
My fav thing to eat/drink after a run is probably water or a smoothie.
For a pulled hammy, ice, rest, and massage are what I would recommend.
Meaghan @ Tale of Two Teachers
Oh I would love that backyard!!! I house sat for a friend last summer who had a similar backyard and it was glorious but yes, a lot of work! Right now we just have a little patio but it is perfectly in the sunshine from about 10 am until the sun sets and it is relatively private considering we are in a condo building with another condo next door.
After a run I usually just crave water… sometimes chocolate milk or fruit though.
No run today but had a nice long walk in our beautiful sunshine!
Lauren
Coffee is what I want after any workout especially running. Maybe not RIGHT away, but definitely within about 30 minutes… Actually, 15… Okay, 5.
And we have a medium sized backyard but we live in the middle of the woods so it’s half covered in trees. The rest is kind of sloped, so we don’t spend much time outside except on our deck or tanning on the parts which aren’t sloped much! ;-)
Brooke @ Running In Heels
UMMM can I have your friends garden?? That is amazing!
Brittney @teaberrytrails
We have pretty big backyard! I actually just posted pictures of it for my post today ;) It’s big and the girls and dogs love it! It’s about 5 acres, so we have plenty to explore! After a run, I love me some watermelon! It’s sweet and quenches my thirst! Win win!
Molly
Heh…when my friends and I do our long runs on the weekends, they basically take bets on how long it will take before I start talking about how much I want either an iced coffee or a cherry limeade from Sonic, depending on the day.
Rianne
To keep hamstrings loose, someone suggested putting your leg up on the counter while brushing your teeth. It works for me.
Sami @Simply Sami
I tend to run at dawn, but today we ran at 7am and it was hotter than I expected it to be!
Mia
Usually immediately after i run i’m not craving anything but cold water (30 mins later I’m craving large amounts of any and all food.) Sometimes during a run i dream about what i’m going to eat, but i pretty much do that all the time. Like all the time. Lately however, during my long hot morning runs (always over 80 degrees no matter what time in the morning these days) i start craving a cold coke. Weird because I’m not a soda drinker. I have SERIOUSLY considered many times going into a fast food place or gas station and filling up my water bottle with soda, and drinking coke for the remainder of my run. Obviously i talk myself out of it cause it would just be wrong on so many levels, but it’s a hard choice.
Kristen @ notsodomesticated
Soo Brooke doesn’t want to wear anything on her feet, but she does want to carry one of your socks around? Too funny! ;)
Siobhan McCarthy
Brooke and your inside out running sock! hahaha She is clearly your daughter! The perks of that is- it’s so small! She can take that thing anywhere! ;)
Miranda @ Miranda Runs
I have to drink chocolate milk after a run! It’s the bestttttttttt.
Rachel McIntyre
After a run I don’t want any food (the only time EVER that I can’t eat is straight after running) and fresh orange juice and a huge glass of water.
My run was super hot today. It was a short one but I was still a sweaty mess when I finished!
Kari @ Running Ricig
Brooke has a security running sock :).
My back yard is huge and I love it…until I have to mow it. It’s great for Bungee to run around in, though.
My run today wasn’t hot, but it was insanely humid. I am now drinking my body weight in gatorade.
Nic
I have a teeny front yard that we’re probably going to overhaul in the near future. And we have two rooftop spaces. On one we have a container garden, I ‘harvested’ the first zucchini yesterday! Benefits – they’re self-watering and have plastic tarps over them so no weeding required. We also have tomatoes, peppers, butternut squash, cucumbers, kale, strawberries and a fig tree.
Yesterday I laid out back there and enjoyed the sun and breezes, it was heaven.
Kay
What a beautiful garden!
Yes the PB one is SOOOOOOOOOOOO good!!
