I did the unthinkable

I stayed on the elliptical for a full 60 minutes this morning.  I haven’t done that since 1998.

The only reason I was able to do such a thing was because I had my sister there to listen to me talk for 60 minutes straight.  We took it super easy because we wanted to talk and because I had the brilliant idea last night to have a sleepover with my cousin and stay up 5 hours later than my normal bedtime.

After the gym Curly came over to help me get everything ready before we leave back home to California.

I think I am passing my picture taking obsession down to the little ones.  I now have 219 pictures of Brooke taken by Curly… she is actually pretty good at it.

I am really going to miss the giant bags of FMS at my mom’s house.

I found the world record that I want to break:

Isn’t that incredible… older than 90 years old and he completed a marathon and at 101 years old he just finished a 10k.  I better be running the rest of my life (and I plan to live until 110).

How is your Wednesday so far?

How long can you handle the elliptical?  How long can you stay on there before you get bored?  What do you do to fight the boredom?

Do you take a lot of pictures?  What kind of camera do you use?

-I use my phone camera and my Nikon D7000.

I haven’t been on the elliptical in SO long! It used to be my go to workout, like way back in the day but ever since I started spinning like 3 years ago, I can’t fathom trying to stay on longer than 20 minutes. It’s so boring to me, since you can’t play with it as much as the spin bike. Props to you!
Mini frosted wheats! Those were one of the two cereals I used to eat as a kid, I was very picky.

I can stay about an hour on the elliptical if the treadmills are all being used. I just try to keep myself from getting bored by changing up the resistance, changing the incline, pedaling backwards here and there.
And your nieces are getting so big, too!

Reply

I can handle the elliptical for about 30 minutes if I have a book to read. Let me tell you though holding game of thrones while on the elliptical is a workout on its own

Good job on the elliptical. I haven’t been on one in years. I would much rather run it out. And glad your sister was there to keep you company :)

Love to take lots of pictures of my kiddos with my new Sony HD camera! My Wednesday has been a little chaotic seeing as my battery was dead on my car this morning. i found that out after my 5 year old missed the bus. :-) then i proceeded to take all three kids to the dentist and grocery shopping. I’m pooped! I need a nap before I teach boot camp at church tonight. gotta work those relief society arms. ; )

People think I’m crazy because I LOVE the treadmill! I was on it for a good 1.5 hours a couple weeks ago. I love how I can force myself to keep a certain pace and be able to zone out and not have to worry about cars/lamp posts/people, etc. It’s how I relieve stress!

I love to watch TV at the gym or jam to music. and yes, jam. I have a habit of at least mouthing the words to the song I’m listening to. I have to be careful not to sing out loud haha!

Reply

and I’m an idiot and just realized you said the elliptical, not the treadmill.

Well in that case, I still watch TV and jam to music. But it definitely doesn’t hold my attention as long :)

Reply

I can’t last on the elliptical or the treadmill for more than 20 minutes. Maybe if I had someone cool to hang out with I’d do it. Oh and I’m super classy and only take pictures with my iPhone. Just keeping it real, ya know?

Reply

I am really bad about taking pictures. I always have a camera on me but never actually use it. I have a junky point and shoot Nikon and my iPhone.

Reply

I use my Nikon J1 – I can’t figure those fancy cameras out.

I can’t handle the elliptical for that long, but then again, I haven’t tried it in years and never with a talking buddy. Everything is more bearable with a buddy.

My Wednesday is JAM PACKED!!!…. but good :). I can stay on the elliptical for an hour but it’s not an hour that I enjoy. Today I ran 11 miles, which was fun. And I have my iPhone, my little digital, and a Canon Rebel which I loveeee! Haha, I was just sitting here painting my nails (aka procrastinating the homework for a solid 15 minutes) and was thinking hmmm I wonder what Janae is up to! And I haven’t even met you in person! sooo funny :P

My gym doesn’t have ellipticals, only treadmills, bikes and crazy arc trainers that are designed to kill people.

I have a Nikon D5000, but since I got my iPhone in October, it’s all I use.

At first glance I thought your sentence said you hadn’t been in be elliptical since 1988. I was like wow you started young! Wednesday is great so far! Made a trip to TJ and have been with one of my best friends all day :-) tonight were ordering Chinese and making brownies!

Reply

60 min is my max on the elliptical too. I usually try to read a magazine while I’m on it. I would LOVE to break that record with you….that is amazing!

My Wednesday rocks. Speed workout with my running buds, class at the gym, nap, sunshine, church activities, AND season premiers of Duck Dynasty and Psych.
I hate the eliptical and won’t get on one. I do like the treadmill though. My new gym has individual TVs for each piece of cardio equipment so now those runs go by super quick.

Reply

If I do the elliptical I usually stay on for an hour. Once I did it for two hours straight. For reals!!!!!!! I had good music and a TV to watch. That helps.

Hugs,

I cannot do the elliptical for more than 15 min.
Good for you staying on there for so long

Weirdest day in a long time. So I layed down with my electric throw blanket. Things should be better as soon as that chocolate hits my lips.
I love working out with someone. Talk Talk Talk! It’s the best!

Reply

I love the eliptical! I can stay on it forever. The thing is that running still feels like a much better workout so I force myself to do the treadmill instead. But the eliptical is perfect for recovery and crosstraining.

Reply

I love my Nikon D3100, and we have daily folders of pictures. Yes, it’s true. There are also daily photos from the itouch, too.

Oh, and Weds.=fabulous! I took our girl out for a while just driving through SLC while the hub had a meeting. She slept. I reflected. It was what we both needed. The clouds above the mountains were the topping of it on the way home.

Reply

I personally think that 101 yr old fellow is pretty cool! very inspiring…

Reply

I hardly ever go on the elliptical because I get so bored! It is a nice switch-up sometimes and I’ll do 15-30 minutes along with some other type of cardio.

Reply

Wow, that 101 year racer is AMAZING.

I take a bazillion pictures too. I also use my cell phone or a Canon 5D Mark II.

Reply

woah, curly did take an awesome picture of Brooke there!!! it depends on the day how long I can stay on the elliptical. i have an octane elliptical at home so I usually do 10 mins, then get off and do planks, some weights, push-ups, jumping jacks, and get back on for another 10 mins. I do this three times so its a 30 min elliptical workout and about 29 mins of weights and stuff- it’s the only way I don’t get super bored on there!!

that man is amazing & i definitely believe you’ll be running at 110!!! have a great night!

Reply

Someone gave us an elliptical and I don’t use it nearly enough… When I do I watch Netflix! That helps the boredom :)

Reply

Pretty good!!! Nice relaxing day :)
I honestly can’t handle it longer than 5 minutes, it’s so foreign to me lol I don’t know what to do with myself
When I remember the camera (I have the Canon Powershot)/remember I have it with me I do haha

Reply

Welp, a 101 year old man running a 10K just took away all my excuses to run 3 miles tonight!!!! :-)

Reply

I use the elliptical about 2-3 times a week as a low impact alternative on non-running days. I usually do an hour but occasionally longer if I have time. I need plenty of entertainment to get through it though! Usually I watch the TV while reading blogs on my iPad. If there’s nothing on TV I might watch Glee or Smash on the iPad. Tomorrow morning I think I will be reading Gone Girl (I am hooked!) while watching the Today Show.

Reply

My Wednesday is SO great so far! I had an awesome workout and then decided to pursue my personal trainer certification. SO anxious!

I used to do the elliptical for a long time but the past few months it has been SO boring. I try to switch it up with speed, levels, direction, etc. but it’s tough to make it a full hour.

Reply

Wow!!! 101!! I guess it’s time for me to start my 50 and over bucket list….

And you’re a real champ for sticking with the elliptical for that long. If I don’t have camaraderie going on, I crap out on that thing after about 5 minutes. I need the scenery of the open road!

Reply

I use my iphone camera–takes great pics for me!

That is amazing that he ran a marathon at 100. WOW!

I love that you are so close to your family–it’s so great to see/read about :)

Reply

I hate the elliptical!! It feels so unnatural. It feels like I’m going backward, and when I try reversing direction, it’s worse. Killer workout for the thighs, tho. I can’t last more than a few minutes on the thing. The good news is that I no longer have access to one! :)

Reply

I don’t have a real camera, just an iPhone! But I’d probably take a lot more pictures if I had a real one…

Reply

My Wednesday has been great so far. I’ve been super productive in that I’ve finished a couple projects and watched like half a season of Parenthood…. :D I last on the elliptical for about 30 minutes , it used to be an hour or so when I first started working out. I don’t know how I did it. I use my iPhone for taking pictures because it’s better than my digital camera!

Reply

If I combined yesterday and today and divided by 2, I’d have two normal days! Yesterday found me teaching gym at an inner city elementary school where I decided to run with all 9 classes’ to keep them moving, and then went home and did a Jillian Michaels workout DVD. Today I worked in the Help Center/Learning Assistance/Cool Off room of an alternative program at an inner city high school. I marked papers while sitting still all day long! Hopefully tomorrow will consist of a normal work/run schedule! Lol

After about 10 minutes on the elliptical, I want to cry. It’s beyond boring for me, but I usually try to stay on for 20-30 minutes. I’ve never gone past 30, and I highly doubt I ever will in the future.

Reply

I tend to go through phases when it comes to staying on gym machines. Sometimes I can handle them with no prob, and other times even 10 minutes feels like a struggle. It helps to bring my iPad and watch shows though… or comment on blogs if I’m just walking. Multitasking at it’s finest :D

My Wednesday was pretty busy! I however, haven’t been on the elliptical in like forever! Maybe I’ll jump on it soon?! I take a ton of pics, mostly through instagram, but did recently purchase a Fujifilm finepix! I have no idea how in the world to use it and hope I can stop taking blurry pictures!

Reply

I think I’ve stayed on the elliptical for an hour ONCE while I was injured and couldn’t run. Curly and Brooke together is just too much cuteness to handle :) Sounds like you had a fun few days at home!

Reply

Wednesday is pretty good and busy with wedding junk.
I use to do a regular 40 minute elliptical session and read a magazine the entire time- minus the magazine I’d probably last like 8 minutes.
We have a point-and-shoot camera that’s actually really awesome, but it’s just SO much easier to use my phone. So iPhone it is.

Reply

Mehhh I have a hot date with the elliptical tomorrow due to a nagging injury. At least that means some good magazine reading time:)

Love seeing your adorable family’s faces again!

Reply

I take my pics on my phone these days. I should really start carrying my camera with me again, but I just never think about it.

Reply

Why is Brooke the CUTEST!? Seeing her chubby cheeks always brighten my day!

Reply

60 min on the elliptical sounds like pure torture to me but I guess chatting with someone would help pass the time :)

Reply

My Wednesday is great! The elliptical and I can last about 30 minutes. I get so bored even when reading! Brooke and Curly are so cute!! I love that picture of her taking pictures!

I take a TON of photos when I am traveling or on a hike or something, but not nearly enough when I am just with friends or family. I have a Sony Alpha that I LOVE.

Today was a good run…I discovered the vastness and confusion that is the Pentagon complex. And my 8 mile run turned into 9, ha. I also saw a lady walking a cat…so that was interesting.

Wow – 101!!! Impressive.

LOVE Nikon cameras!! They are the best! :)
I could probably stay on the elliptical for 24 hours straight. It’s a struggle to do 24 consecutive seconds on treadmill, but I love the elliptical. Weird…….

Reply

I only use my iphone 5. I should probably invest at some point in a real camera.

p.s. thanks for your email today. :) I appreciate the help!

Reply

I have no doubt that you will be running until you are that age!!

Reply

I can last about 10 minutes tops on the eliptical. I don’t know why I struggle with it so much! Especially because I can run on the treadmill for days. And even though I have a DSLR, I use my iPhone more often because it is so convenient.

Guess what?! I got my new Brooks Pureflow 2s in the mail today! Woot-woot! I can’t wait to go for a run. I’m even wearing them as I type this because I just couldn’t wait to put them on my feet. After reading your blog for several months, I decided I had to try them. Thanks for the suggestion!

Reply

Ugh! Totally flaked on running today! But, DH & I had 1 million and 1 errands to run this afternoon & then he treated the family to dinner. Since he’s home from his OOT job for just 8 days, I decided that was ok ;) No worries! I plan to get up early and hit the gym for a couple hours in the AM to make up for it.

I can usually stand around an hour on the elliptical. Honestly, I’ve never gone any longer than that. The elliptical doesn’t bother me as long as I have my ear buds in and the tv on :)

I have a Nikon 3000 that I LOVE! I hardly ever pull it out anymore though.. Gotta love the IPhone

Reply

Ha! I totally saw that 101 year old marathon-er ugh and here I am at 37 stressing over my first 1/2 next month! http://www.colorushealthy.com

I haven’t done the elliptical in quite awhile. Probably adding it to my list sooner or later, though!
When you’re home for awhile it makes me so happy to see Curly’s adorable face on your blog! :)
I take my pictures with my IPhone. I don’t have the attention span or patience for keeping my regular camera with me. I should, but I just don’t!

Reply

hahaha I love Brooke’s facial expression when Curly is taking her picture! So hilarious! Aw retirement, I enjoyed reading about him in the news the past few years! I’m lucky to even live that long, much less still be running. But I will try! :D

How is your Wednesday so far?

Good, though, I wish it were Friday!

How long can you handle the elliptical? How long can you stay on there before you get bored? What do you do to fight the boredom?

I used to do the elliptical for an hour. Then I started running. Now, I don’t touch the elliptical.

Do you take a lot of pictures? What kind of camera do you use?

I do take a lot of pics. I used to take more a few years ago. I mainly use the camera on my phone, even though I spent a decent amount on a Canon that I never use. Too bulky.

Reply

I do ellipticAl only 60 minutes or more :) my husband and I love it! When I saw that in the paper about the o,dest marathon runner I immediately thought of you and was wondering if you’d mention it on the blog!! Crazy cool.

Reply

Oh and I watch tv to fight the boredom. Not boring at all actually! Usually food network haha it’s kind of like torture while ur working out!

Reply

I read about that oldest marathoner before!!

sheeesh, the elliptical is my enemy. 60 minutes is SERIOUSLY impressive on that thing! there has to be one amazing tv show on for me to stay more than 30!

Reply

I can’t remember the last time I was on an eliptical, way to go!! So glad you get to chat with your sister. I just booked a flight for WA in April for me and my lil sis, can’t wait!

Reply

Just curious, is her real name curly?
And I know this is stupid, but explain bangs to me: is it you, your friend with dark hair, her friend or…?

Reply

Sorry… It gets confusing! I just call her curly because my sis didn’t want me to use their real names on the blog! Bangs is my dark haired friends name but her real name is Katie!

Reply

My Wednesday was great! However, my baby girl fell asleep a few hours ago and I just decided to stay up because I was sure she would be awake by now. It is now 12:30 am and I just know she is going to wake up as soon as I fall asleep! She is super cute like Brooke so I don’t mind too much :).

Reply

i’m with you janae. i hope to be running as long as i live. and i plan to live a LONG time:) that man is simply incredible. i can’t believe he didn’t even start running until he was 89! wow.
ellipticals, eek. i only do them when i absolutely have to (blistered running feet or hugley pregnant) but i always read with one of those book holders. that tends to pass the time nicely.

Reply

60 minutes on an elliptical? Damn I can’t last 20. I get so bored and feel I can’t really push myself like I can on a treadmill? I love it for active recovery but not full on hiit!

Your daughter is so sweet!

I LOVE shredded wheat cereal. With warm milk = heaven!!

Damn I haven’t even ran for more than 3 miles. That guy makes a fool of most of us! My years plan is to take on running more seriously!

Sorry for the babbling ha! Love the blog!

Reply

I swear Brooke just gets cuter with every passing day! I started reading your blog this summer a few months before she was born so I feel like I’ve been watching her grow right along with you :) Love reading and hope you had a fantastic week with family!

Reply

I can do max half an hour, unless I’m watching a TV show and going really slowly to fully concentrate on the show! Some people are on the elliptical for hours at my gym!

Reply

My Wednesday was great – didn’t get my 5 miles in on the treadmill, but I did do 4!

I can do the elliptical for maybe 30 minutes… There is one lady at my gym that is on it for 2 hours usually!

I take a lot of pics too – I use a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS. It takes awesome pictures :)

Reply

I agree that the elliptical is the MOST boring cardio out there. But I usually do it once every few weeks because I know I need to get in some cross training that is a little easier on my body. This week I actually hopped on for 45 minutes, which is my personal record, but it was only because I had some netflix to entertain me.

Reply

If you use your iPhone regularly, check out Groovebook – an app in the iStore. The picture quality isn’t stellar and the paper the pictures are printed on is flimsy, but it’s a great way to get all the pictures on your phone printed. I make a book each month ($2.99) and send them to my grandma. She doesn’t mind the the quality – she just enjoys getting very recent pictures on a regular basis.

I can actually stay on the elliptical far longer than a treadmill. I worked out at 5:30am before coming into work…

Reply

Oh the elliptical…the only way I can stay on it long enough to get a good workout in, is I put tv shows on my iPod and watch episodes…so I usually stay on them for 42 minutes, haha. Currently watching Dawson’s Creek =) Or sometimes I read a book…

Reply

I have a Canon Rebel T3 and I love it! It takes great pics, but I need to get better about using it for the blog. I find it so easy to just snap crappy pics from my iPhone, but of course the quality is not good. Bad blogger award goes to me for that!

Reply

That picture is wonderful! Brooke has a super cheesy grin too! My toes/feet tend to fall asleep if I stay on the elliptical for too long…anyone else have that problem?? It’s pretty annoying, so my elliptical workouts are only about 30-45 minutes.

Reply

The news segment on the radio talked about the 101 year old marathoner running his last marathon and they said “he ran his last marathon, which was 6.2 miles long”. I always think it’s funny when people call every road race a marathon :) My roomie in college would always ask me “how long is this marathon” when I had a race coming up.

I also plan to live to 110, so we can hang out and eat FMW and sweedish fish (I also plan to still have teeth….).
