6 Running Topics and Lasagna

I have running magazine ADD today. I hope this is okay with you.  I like to focus on an article from either Runners World or Running Times every now and then but today that just wasn’t a possibility.  I found so many entertaining and interesting things in the January and February issues that I just had to share them all.

1.  An awesome quote about treadmills.  I have plans after work today and so it was another early morning treadmill run for me (I refuse to run in the dark by myself and I feel bad making my mom get up that early to follow me in her car.  Seriously, when I wanted to run at night in high school when it was dark my mom would just drive behind me, now that is love) and I usually don’t mind the treadmill but today the below quote kept going through my brain.

2.  Speaking of treadmills…..can you even imagine?

3.  Remember how I interviewed my favorite athlete ever….Dathan Ritzenhein!! (You can read it HERE).  Well, he had an article about him in the February 2012 Runner’s World which was awesome because I felt like I was reading about a friend (I am sure he feels the same way about me;) and I loved seeing his daily eats.

Billy, if we want to be really good runners, it looks like we need to eat steak every single night…..let’s go shopping:)  PS aren’t his little kids the cutest things in the whole wide world.

Photo 2

4.  Speaking of food, I stared at this picture of lasagna for 11 minutes straight.  Because my birthday is just ELEVEN days away….Billy, go ahead and get the ingredients now to make this for me on the day we celebrate my birth.

Photo 2

5.  A quote from Jenny Simpson (gold medalist in the 1500m at the World Championships with a 4:05:40) that makes me realize it is IMPORTANT to relax and spend time watching my favorite shows, I don’t always have to be busy:)

Photo 2 copy

6.  And last but not least….A few nutrition goals that Runner’s World (January 2012) recommends for runners:

1.  Eat 3 food groups at breakfast:  Fats (help you feel satisfied), carbs (ENERGY) and protein (build MUSCLE).

2. Join the Meatless Monday Movement.

3. Fill half your plate with produce

4. Get more Calcium!!!

5. Upgrade your salad greens (arugula, kale and endive)

6. Ditch the packaged diet foods.

7. Redefine dessert by focusing on fruit.  Edited by Janae:  Fruit flavored candy counts for this one;)

Anyone else have birthdays in February?

What is your standard birthday meal request? Do you love lasagna as much as me?

-Lasagna, I have always requested this since I was a little kid.

Which nutrition goal from runner’s world do you need to work on?

Do you feel like you always need to be doing something or are you good at letting yourself take breaks and relax?

I was thinking, “Ohhh I love that ‘Daily Dish’ part!” But then I was all… “FORGET THAT. THERE’S A HUGE PIECE OF LASAGNA.”

Reply

I KNOW….I literally can’t stop thinking about that lasagna! Hope you are having a great day gorgeous girl!

Oh man I should have told you that story (i did a blog post about it!) I went to the gym and decided to try to hit the 12.7 mark on the treadmill, just to see what it was like and whether the treadmill went that fast. Lesson #1: I can’t go that fast. Lesson #2: Actually, I’m not sure if I can go that fast cause I started freaking out when it hit 10.5 and caused a total scene in the gym.

It was awesome.

Reply

AHHHHHH you tried it…that is awesome!! I don’t even think I could make it to 10.5. Seriously, can you imagine going 12.7 mph for TWENTY SIX POINT TWO MILES?!?!

I need to work on the redefine dessert. I have been having true dessert (cake, cookie, brownie, ice cream) every single night for the month of January and that is not an exaggeration. It has been delicious and I am considering not redefining it, and just keeping on keeping on for the month of feb. What a great way to honor your birth month right??

Mmmm I love lasagna! The best lasagna I ever had was Giada De Laurentiis’ Lasagna Rolls – recipe here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/lasagna-rolls-recipe/index.html

Reply

Now I NEED lasagna! My bday dinner is always eggplant parmesan! Oh man i’m so hungry and I need to go get my run in first!

Reply

Mmm :) I adore chicken lasagna! My usual birthday request is usually only for my grandma’s homemade chocolate cake with brown sugar sour cream frosting. Otherwise I like to mix up the regular meal.

February seems to be the busiest birthday month! Mine is Feb 19! One of my best friends actually had the same exact birthday so we always celebrate together. I live many states away from home now but before I moved, I always requested some sort of Italian food for my family birthday dinner. I definitely need to work on healthier dessert choices.

Reply

His pace was 4:43!?!?!??? My jaw completely dropped when I saw that. Oh gosh, that is fast. For a very long time. I could do that for oh, 10 seconds!!?!? Haha crazy!

Ahhh, Meatless Monday. Before I got married in 2010, I was gradually going vegetarian – there was a period of about 6 months where I would only eat meat or seafood once a week at most. Then, I got married and my husband is extremely carnivorous… so there went my conversion to vegetarianism. =( Bad, I know.

What I’d like to focus on personally is eating a wider variety of foods. I read someplace that Americans tend to eat only about 20-30 different foods in total, whereas Asians eat upwards of 50 different foods. More variety is better since every type of food supplies a different range of nutrition. So I’ve been challenging myself to buy something new and different every time I go to the grocery store.

I loved RW and RT issues this month. Both so good! And I loved the article about Jenny Simpson — she’s a tough cookie! And a major over-achiever (in a good way).

You know I am loving that meatless monday suggestion too!

I love my treadmill so that quote is lost on me. :)

Reply

And, this shows you how not good of a runner I am. I saw 4:43 and I thought, that’s not that fast, is it? And, there’s no way he’d need the treadmill that fast to hit that time. Well, because clearly pace is different than marathon time. I think that means it’s time to leave work and stop thinking for the day.

My standard request for a birthday meal is Cafe Rio.
I need to work on all of those.
And, no. I never relax. Unless I’m sleeping. It’s sort of annoying, actually.

Reply

My birthday is the 28th. We usually go out to eat and I will get some kind of seafood, scallops and shrimp are my favorites. I favorite cake is devils food with party frosting, witch is like the inside of a devil dog.

I am pretty good with most of the Runners World goals, but meatless Mondays, I don’t know if I can convince my family on that one.

When I was growing up we always went to a local Provino’s (an Italian place) and I ordered the same thing every year, chicken francese. Its chicken breast sauteed in lemon butter and wine sauce. I remember my mom ordering it and I had a bite, its been my birthday meal for 20 years. Now we live in another city and the meal to date is Cracker Barrel lol.

Reply

Mine was yesterday and I had the most awesome chocolate cake with chocolate frosting! (homemade and vegan) nomnomnom

Reply

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY!! I am so happy you had that amazing cake for your birthday!!!! Hope you are having a great day after your birthday:)

Reply

I need to eat more calcium :)

Reply

I am lucky enough to be in Michigan for my birthday, so I always request to go to a bar called The Library Pub, and I always order an Asian Chicken Salad

Reply

Noticed that Ritz eats Peanut Butter and Nutella. Been doing that for a while. It’s like a Reese’s sandwich.

Reply

Oh, I am good at relaxing- maybe too good :). No need to work on that!
My birthday in in February, too! The 26th. We usually go out to someplace where I can get a salad, steak and shrimp. Yes, all of these things. Since moving to Utah, that place is Texas Roadhouse. Yum.

Reply

I definitely don’t need to work on taking breaks :-) I settle down and watch TV or mess around on the computer pretty much every night. I figure that I need to do it to stay sane and make it through the week.

Happy almost birthday!

Reply

Today’s my hubby’s birthday. His request is that we go somewhere with great beer. My favorite birthday meal is Italian penne vodka in particular.

Reply

YUM….PENNE:) I hope you guys have a blast tonight and tell him happy birthday!

Reply

Hubby’s birthday in February. I always want pizza or wings for my birthday. I need to eat breakfast period. Not just work on one part of it. I don’t do nothing well. I am usually doing something.

I LOVE lasagna! I’ve been meaning to post my killer veggie lasagna on my blog…and all of what you said is true about my hip :*( Apparently with the torn cartilage if I move wrong it can just kind of rotate out of the joint. I hope to hear from the surgeon next week!!

Reply

My b-day is next month so I’m already thinking of what kind of cake I want. My hubby makes me one for scratch each year. Hmmm…

I need to work on redefining dessert as fruit. Maybe I should order myself an Edible Arrangement every other day(of course it would be the one with chocolate covered strawberries, pineapple, apples, and melon!). That’s my kind of fruit dessert!

My birthday is February 13th born on a Friday!

Reply

AHHHHH OUR NAMES RHYME AND WE HAVE THE SAME BIRTHDAY!!! ARE WE TWINS!?!?!

Reply

Too FUNNY!!! Yes twins 10 years apart exactly! I will be 36!!

Reply

Me too! <3 my Friday the 13th birthday! :)

Reply

Ooooh, that lasagna looks delish!
I need to work at eating a more well balanced breakfast — I’m usually lacking in the protein department…whoops!

Reply

I’m a February birthday girl too. I don’t have a favorite meal though…as long as I don’t have to cook!

We love lasagna. Have you ever had chilaquiles? It is like a mexican lasagna – so good!

Reply

What day is your bday!?!? I haven’t had mexican lasagna…have a good recipe for me?

Reply

It’s the 8th – coming up!

The recipe came from the newspaper, so I took a picture & tweeted you.

Hope you can read it!

Reply

You are the best thanks so much and happy happy almost birthday!

Reply

so my question is what is the ideal bfast for those 3. i do 1 full egg and 2 egg whites scrambled with spinach, and half avocado…i think i need a carb in there ? but an english muffin ??

Reply

I would definitely add an english muffin or a slice or two of toast:) You are doing awesome in the protein and healthy fats department! Let me know what you end up trying!

Reply

that is in INSANE that patrick makau’s pace was 4:43 – holy moly. that is crazy awesome.
yum – that lasagna looks so good! for birthday dinners, my family has usually gone out to eat, and the hubby and i still kinda follow that tradition. whoever’s birthday it is gets to choose. this year i’m choosing cheesecake factory, and you better believe i’m getting cheesecake. my birthday isn’t in feb, but it’s march 4th – coming up! :)
as for the nutrition goals, uhh i definitely need to “redefine” my desserts. fruit is NOT dessert in my book, but it probably should be… ahhh i just love my treats!

Reply

Ha! I laughed out loud when I saw that treadmill definition!!! Did your mom seriously do that??? And she takes you to Subway and gives you left overs? She is hardcore best mom ever!

When I lived close to my parents, I always asked for baked ziti. And cake. Now if I don’t cook, I don’t get a birthday meal. We usually eat out now.

Need to work on the dessert thing. Fruit does NOT count as dessert, what are they thinking???

Reply

My birthday was yesterday! I celebrated by having two of my favorite types of food; Japanese (had to go with a bento box since sashimi is off the table for now) and burger.
I’m not a relaxer. Even when I sit down to relax, I end up thinking of other things that I can be doing. It’s hard to just unplug!

Reply

MY DEAREST ROSA!!! Happy happy happy birthday! That makes me so happy:) I am stoked you got Japapnese food and a burger:)

Reply

I could use to upgrade my salad greens. I’m a pretty standard girl…recently found spinach and am super excited about it!

I have SUCH a hard time relaxing! It’s hard for me to even watch TV without doing something.

Reply

I haven’t been reading my running magazines..sometimes no time..well wait..if I stopped reading blogs there would be time..but I would miss you..magazines will always be there ;)

Reply

I made that chicken lasagna recipe from RW and my husband, I, and my 3 kiddos LOVED it. You won’t be sorry, it will be the best birthday dinner EVAH!

Reply

Calcium intake is always what gets me! I need to buy those little chocolate calcium vitamins… that would probably solve the problem.

Reply

I definitely need to work on dessert. I have been far too dessert-indulgent lately.

I always have to be doing something. Sitting still is not an option. And relax? Haha.

Reply

I always ask for steak tips! I don’t eat red meat very often, as I am single & living with my sister (who works nights) so I’m not about to cook a steak for myself.

I am one of those people who has an agenda and a to-do-list a mile long, but I’m very good about kicking back and relaxing when I feel like I need it (and I did that last night!). Sometimes I just need trashy TV where I don’t need to think and to fall asleep on my couch at 8 pm.

Reply

My birthday is Feb. 8 :) I always ask for sushi for birthday dinner!

Reply

A 4:43 pace?!?! Oh my gooodnessss. I always want asian food like sushi or hibachi!!! And froyo :) Happy almost birthday!!!

Reply

i love this post!!!! that quote about a treadmill makes me sad, i am a freak who loves the treadmill and swears by it.

my mom is italian and makes the best lasagna ever. its so so so good.

Reply

Feb birthdays are the BEST birthdays!!!! I knew we were kindred spirits!! Mine is on the 23rd!! Happy B-day month :-)~

Reply

Happy birthday month! Yes, you get the WHOLE MONTH to celebrate!!! When I was growing up I would request my mom’s meatloaf, mashed potatoes with English peas (made into a bird’s nest, of course), and corn bread with a little butter and lots of honey. Now I ask to go out for sushi. :)

I love that quote about the productive life…that is exactly what I’m working on right now – cutting back on being so busy with everything and actually getting to enjoy my life, my friends, and my family.

I could definitely be working on filling half my plate at ALL meals with produce.

Reply

I made that lasagna this weekend, but instead of the chicken I used pheasant. It was so delicious I made it again yesterday for my friend and her family. Give it a try!

Got a 6 mile run in outside today. It was so much nicer than my last few run on the treadmill.

Reply

Thank you so much for letting me know Kim, now I am even more excited to try it. YAY for a wonderful run outside!

Reply

When I was little, I refused to eat lasagna unless my parents pretended I was Garfield the cat. True story.

Reply

BAHAHAHA That absolutely made my night, hilarious!

Reply

I LOVE lasagna. I MADE A delicious one this week–I used a bolognese sauce and didn’t over do it on the pasta–it had lots of meat! it was YUMMO! e

Reply

My bday is 2/22, pretty much the best birthday ever! I like to have a family dinner with everyone there and anything my mom cooks is great.
I will pick pie over cake any day of the week so that’s usually what she makes me:)

Reply

HAPPY ALMOST BIRTHDAY!!!!! I hope you have the best day ever and lots of pie! Let me know how it goes;)

Reply

I am so far behind on my RW magazines, it’s sad. My daughter’s b-day is today and mine is TOMORROW!!

Reply

ahahaha I’m totally addicted to running times and runners world!! I love reading pro athlete’s daily diets – and I take notes haha. I actually have a book that’s got like 20 different endurance athlete diets! I agree about the lasagna, italian food on my bday is a MUST!

Reply

feb 27th is my 41st bday, I love lasagna and i need to eat better breakfast

HAPPY ALMOST BIRTHDAY!! I think you need to have lasagna on your bday:)

I think we are on the same page today. I just made an amazing lasagna for the BOY and have been taking pics of magazines to post all week. I need to work on my greens and just added that to my February goals!

Yay for meatless Monday!

Reply

I’m in the minority that I hate lasagna. Yuck. I can’t think of anything I dislike more actually.

I tried the 12.1 on the treadmill and did it – for about a minute. I can’t imagine keeping that pace up for an entire marathon. Meatless Monday’s – we’re definitely on board for that one. Although it’s not always on a Monday and we usually go meatless 3 times a week. The fruit for dessert is crazy though. Unless it’s in the form of pie with ice cream or cream on top. Then I get it.

Happy almost birthday!

Reply

You need to come over for New Year’s then….I make a 20-25 lb pan of lasagna each year :)

Reply

haha…i’d like to walk by someone at the gym and see them cranking on the treadmill at 12.7mph like it was no big thang! ;)

i totally need to work on convenience/packaged food. i steer towards the healthier end because i suck at cooking, but still…

Reply

Psssh 12.7 miles per hour..I could do that as my easy run! That is NUTS! I’m feeling kinda smug as I sit here with my breakfast: smoothie with protein powder and scrambled eggs with peanut butter…check, check and check :)

Reply

My son is a Feb birthday so I always like this month. Plus, it’s a short month in winter, so that’s a bonus!

Love the food rules from RW. Good stuff.

Reply

I now CANNOT get that image of lasagna out of my head. I’ve tried. Even the picture of the ice-cream in your last post didn’t do it for me.

I have to have lasagna in the next 4 hours or somebody is going to get hurt!

Reply

Just wanted to thank you for being a little dork about running news and information happening in the running community. It’s made me more interested in reading articles and keeping up to date on what is happening. On inspiration from reading this post I just signed up for a Runner’s World subscription!

Maybe you can get a little kickback from that?!

Reply

Feb 11 is my birthday!

I don’t think I’ll be able to get my hands on that delicious looking lasagna, but maybe in taco format ;)

I’d like to eat more greens, more iron and a little less of the sweet stuff.

Reply

another february gal here… aquarians rule :)
my birthday is the 12th and i am running the st pete RNR half as my present to myself and can’t wait for a YUMMMY dinner… i know i’ll be hungry :)

Reply

woohooo birthday!!!!! yay ya yay lady!

i love anything italian, and especially lasagna. a few months ago i made a kickass one in my crockpot. super dooper easy and delicious. now i want some.

Reply

Feb 26… Feb birthdays are the best, and I’m slightly obsessed with the whole month! I always have meatless Monday but need to get more greens on my dinner plate. I’m a fruit addict, need to add in veggies!

Reply

July birthday for this girl!
I LOVE lasagna… sooo good. I make a mean veggie lasagna. I don’t have a standard birthday meal, just so long as there’s cake ;)

I need to get more calcium-I think milk is single handedly the grossest thing out there!

Reply

I’m not necessarily a “runner” but the tips at the end are v. helpful! I try to be mindful of my food ratios but it’s hard depending on where you are eating… booooooooooooo. haha.

Reply

Happy earlier birthday!! My hubby’s birthday is in February :)
I definitely need to work on the redefining dessert .. dessert to me is a piece of chocolate NOT fruit. I don’t think that will ever change… a little mini-eggs never killed anyone, did they?

Reply

Oh man, that quote makes me really motivated to run outside tonight. I hope Bungee’s up to the challenge.

My birthday is Super Bowl Sunday. :)

Reply

That lasagna looks yummy, but did you look at the nutrition info? Barely ANY protein at all. I’m going to make it, but I’m going to sub cottage cheese for the cream cheese to up the protein content.
Cottage cheese is the ONLY food my hubby won’t eat – but it’s a texture thing, so if I put it in the food processor and make it smooth and creamy he doesn’t know the difference!!
Thanks for sharing!! :)

Reply

I made that lasagna last weekend and instead of using reg chicken I used a rotisserie – cause I am lazy – and it worked out SOOOO good. It was so amazingly delicious!

Reply

My birthday meal request is tacos!! Yum. Lasagna is a good request too though-I love me some lasagna.

I need to work on eating more greens! That’s the goal for February!

I have gotten so that I’m ok spending a quiet night at home, not doing anything. But I used to be crazy about planning every second of my day. It’s so nice to just relax!!
