Drowning, Bad Hair and Race Photos.

Lessons learned from today:  How to avoid nearly drowning while swimming.

1.  Do not lift and do push-ups before your swim.  Your arms will burn and want to stop, leaving you stranded and sinking to the bottom of the pool.

2.  You are an animal when music is turned on.  Your lungs cannot handle it when some techno song comes on your ipod (PS I AM COMPLETELY OBSESSED with my new underwater ipod gear) and you try to hit the beat and sprint for far too long.  Maybe some Josh Groban is more accurate for my pace.

3.  Just because Michael Phelps is on one side of you and a girl that was literally born with mermaid fins is on the other side, does not mean you have to keep up with them.  You will probably pass out from overexertion and be found 2 hours later by the water aerobics ladies.

4.  Stop trying to sing when Jay-Z comes on. Yes, you can belt your heart out and prove your amazing rapping skills when you are running but it doesn’t quite work the same when you are swimming and I probably swallowed 2 full gallons of water.

5.  Do not start writing your blog post in your head as you are swimming because you will run into the wall and this may result in a fractured skull.

Overall, I had an AWESOME swim and I realized how much music motivates me.  It was a killer workout and I LOVED every second.  As I am typing this I feel like I am floating out of my desk chair because I am so high on endorphins (how I have missed thee).  Best part about swimming:  My femurs don’t feel a thing:)  Maybe there will be a half-iron man in my future!?!

And just to make you feel better: If you thought you were having a bad hair day today………

Swimming an extra 10 minutes is more important to me than straightening/brushing my hair and trying to look somewhat presentable.

Time for some more amazing race photos!!!!!

The AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL KARI @ RunningRicing sent in a picture of her first race from this year.  LOVE her headband and she literally has the cutest dog in the world.  Although, he does not like it when I do vlogs and barks because my voice is so annoying.

The BEAUTIFUL LETICIA sent in a picture of her FIRST 1/2 MARATHON…….I love it when people get hooked on races:)

What is the PERFECT temperature for you when you run?

-50 degrees is the bomb.com.

When do you sing out loud? Driving, running, the shower….fill me in!

-I always sing when I am driving and running.  I also love to make up songs and sing them to BIlly rather than just telling him non-singing.

If you are a blogger, do you think about what you are going to blog about 90% of the day like me?

-I am always brainstorming or something random will happen and my first thought is that I need to blog about it.

Have you ever had cous cous?

-I tried it for the first time ever in the school cafeteria.  Um, heavenly.  It had blueberries and walnuts in it which sounds weird but was actually amazing!

Yeah, totally agree no arm workout before swimming!! I don't listen to music when I swim because I'm a spaz and would lose count of my laps.

Today was the perfect temp for running! It was probably around 65-70* but there was a nice cool breeze from the ocean. Heavenly! I sing in the shower and every time a rap song comes on I have to show my skillz. Oh, and I sing at work too. I do blog planning in my head all the time….can't help it!

Reply

i tried to sing once while swimming. it certainly will crush that vision of you on a song stage in a hot second. thank goodness i'm in good company, and sure mermaid girl may pass you a time or two, but white girl rapping skills are a rare find indeed :) thank you as always, for brightening my day!!

totally think about what to say in my blog ALL day long. It is getting a little crazy. haha.

I LOVE COUS COUS! cant wait to see you later!

glad you had such an awesome swim!

You make me want to swim! Too bad my gym doesn't have a pool…I gotta work on that!

Now for the questions!
1)Cool but sunny…vitamin D gives me motivation
2)I bust out in song most often in the mornings when i'm getting ready. My roomates love it.
3)Cous-cous is a staple along with quinoa. I make them in big batches and chow down througout the week – I like that you can add anything to them…like blubes and walnuts!

I'm from Houston and enjoy warm weather so my perfect temp is probably warmer than most…I like the temperature to be around 70

I always sing out loud while I'm driving. I also sing and fist pump while running. I'm sure people driving by think I'm crazy..maybe that explains the honking…ha
And I love singing rather than speaking to the Hubs. Mostly this happens while making dinner..not sure why.

I loved all your descriptions of how to swim (or how not to swim)! I need some of those headphones not for the water but for my sweat. I actually ordered some but the answer phone button didn't work and I sent them back thinking I'd reorder and just haven't.
Love couscous. I had it last week with chicken stock and carrots and spinach with my salmon. Yum!
I should think about my blog more often. I need more time in the day.
I LOVE your hair and it's not fair that you don't even do it properly (so you say) and it always looks so good!

Reply

Running temp is 65 degrees perfection for me!

I love singing while driving, dancing, and working out ;) And yes, couscous is okay, but QUINOA is better. Promise :)

Reply

Anywhere around 15 degree celcius is perfect for me!

I probably sing aloud more than I should! haha, and I sing anywhere – the worst is when I realize I am singing to my iPod while running – people must think I am crazy.

Yes and I love couscous!

Reply

I LURVE me some couscous- you can put ANYTHING in it and it'll taste delish, though I agree with Annette- quinoa is even better…

I mostly sing on the treadmill (while choreographing music videos).

And I'm with you- 50 degrees equals perfection.

Reply

Agree! Perfect running weather is 50 degrees!! I sing out loud in the car :)

I def think of what I am going to blog about while on my runs. It's my "me time" and I just like to think about stuff. It's more like a stream of consciousness thing but it's very liberating. Sometimes good posts come out of them, sometimes not!
PS. Josh Groban is awesome and I have everything he's done if you want some. :)

45 – 50 is my favorite running temp. Besides the rain, the last few weeks here in Utah haven't been too bad.

Reply

mmm cous cous is good! You can add so many yummy things! Although I prefer quimoa.

um I am always thinking about what I am going to blog about. 9 times out of 10 when my boyfriend calls me he says, what are you doing, blogging? and he is right.

P.S. Your hair looked better than mine and I actually tried to fix mine today!

My perfect running temperature is 70 degrees and sunny.

I know what you mean about music pushing you too hard, I hear a good song running and run way too fast and then want to stop because I feel sick! Haha.

I never sing outloud, I'm a horrible singer and it is embarassing!

Reply

I heart cous cous, my husband hates it, so I don't cook it very often! Perfect running temp…I am with you right about 50!

Hi Janae,
I was wondering if you would ever do a post on some of the swim workouts you've been doing while rehabing your femur. I'm also injured and stuck with swimming as a means of cardio exercise and don't have much experience with pool workouts. I would love any advice! Also, do you ever run/jog in the pool, or just swim? Thanks!

lol! you crack me up! i love cous cous – especially as part of a BBQ buffet :-) summer food!

Omigosh!!! I'm soooooo excited that you posted my pic!!! My hubby took it…pays to have a photographer husband, huh? ;-D

I am the freaky girl in the gym who smiles while she is running and mouths the words to the songs while simultaneously pretending to play the piano. Glad to know there are more of us out there, ride the endorphin waves people :)

Reply

Delicious yes, but couscous is just pasta, you know that, right?

Reply

50 degrees always. It most certainly is the bomb.com.

Um chlorine and my hair have never and will never get along ha.

Reply

I've never commented on here before, but I wanted to let you know that your blog is the best! I read it everyday because it always cracks me up!! Keep on writing, I know you motivate so many people! :)

Underwater iPod gear? Where have I been? Sounds cool, although I'm not a swimmer. I love running when it's in the 50's. Anything colder means I have to wear gloves. This Florida girl doesn't do well in temps below 50.

Reply

I totally think about what I'm gonna blog about. All the freaking time. And btw, underwater ipod gear? Um… jealous!!

Reply

ok. I can tell that you love your underwater mp3 player, but are there any cons to it? I want to know the good/bad/ugly about them before investing, but I have wanted one for a LONG time. I think this summer that dream will finally be realized…

Cous cous is the best!

Hey! Sorry it's been a few days since I've dropped in!! Lets see, my new song that I'm singing out loud – UH Super Bass by Niki Minaj! Got some great boom to it!!

Reply

When I was first starting out blogging, I thought about it a lot and would write parts of blog posts in my head. But then it kind of got in the way and I'd think about it allll the time. It's better for me to blog once a day (most days) and not HAVE to document every little event. Just… most of them. : )

About 22 degree celsius (about 70F) suits me just perfectly for runs :)

I sing out loud mostly while driving, but also definitely been caught out rockin out at the gym/while out on runs hahaha.

I definitely brainstorm for blog posts… but sadly I'm not updating much lately :\ busy + lazy + life being pretty boring! I'm gonna pretend that I've adopted a new 'quality over quantity' approach…..but uhhhhh…no. hahaha.

COUS COUS FREAK RIGHT HERE. Love it savoury AND sweet. One of my fave cafes near my house makes an amazing 'breakfast cous cous' filled with dried figs, caramelised almonds, poached pears, and served with incredible vanilla yoghurt. bliss.

See now, I have Always wondered how one of those devices would impact me on my swims. Now I know as I would have reacted the same way.
Still, live and learn and there is much to be said for singing in your head.

I must selfishly say (since I don't run) I really enjoyed this swimming post. Have your tried the wall-flip thing? So much fun. I don't do them regularly though. Also, man, try those swim gloves with webbed fingers? Some dude let me try hid and I about died.

Swimming in a pool is also WAY different than open water. I admire those triathletes and my friend who does Iron Men. heehee. Iron Man Races plural.

Reply

Funny, I thought know one was in the gym this morning with me during my six mile run on the treadmill. A country song came on the tv that I love and I just started rocking out to it. After my run, I noticed there was a guy in the corner lifting weights and he gave me a REALLY strange look lol. Ah well it got me through my run.

I sing out loud EVERYWHERE. I totally have a wish to be a broadway superstar but am totally tone deaf. :(

Reply

hahahahah! I love that you posted about Bungee!

Your lessons from swimming crack me up. I read them outloud to Mike because he wanted to know why I was laughing like a crazy person when I read your blog.

I definitely plan out my blogs in advance or will think "oh! I have to post about that!" maybe I should carry around a notebook.

Reply

Haha, I sing everything. It's way more fun than talking regular. I love running when it's cool but not cold and a little windy! My Hubby is middle eastern we eat lots of hummus, cous cous, and taboule. Yum!
I think about blog posts all day but they always come out better in my head!

Reply

You make me DIE.

I think about blogging all day, every day. And I also think about your blog, waiting for new posts so I can laugh all day long!

I haven't tried cous cous but it looks really yummy. Maybe it's next on my list…

I roasted broccoli tonight and thought of you. I have never cooked it that way before, and it was great. The highlight was that my husband ate it and liked it – he hates his veggies!!!

my hair has been rather craptastic lately…. :) glad im not alone!

thanks for posting the race pic!

and I totally agree with you on swimming, I've been swimming more recently with my knee injury, and I've kind of liked it! Though I swim really slow, some people are like torpedos in the water next to me! And even though I'm a guy, I totally notice that chlorine destroys my hair, sometimes it takes like 2 days for it to feel normal again! Thanks for your comment on my blog today too!

Reply

I'm with you. Swimming trumps hair. Any.day.of.the.week. (I think I may have overused periods there.) Oh.Well. Also, do you have just an ipod or an Iphone with underwater gear?

Reply

I'm not a swimmer but you make it sound fun and want to try it out!

I sing when I drive and run too. I sometimes bust out in dance moves during both too!

I LOVE cous cous!

Whenever I swim, I totally race the people in the lanes next to me. I always wonder if they're racing, too, or if it's just me :)

LOVE couscous, especially with some sort of nut and fruit. Delish!

There are a bunch of my running songs that have some phrase or something that's repeated back, and I always instinctively shout it, even when other people are around.

Yeah that’s what I’m talikng about baby–nice work!

Wonderful explanation of facts avialable here.

I need to get me one of those water proof i-pod cases!!! I swim all of the time to take a break from running, but I find that I do miss having my music with me…

I think I break out in a song anywhere, but I try to keep it on the down low when driving so that people don't look at me funny…haha

Reply

Parm cous cous is amazing. Congrats on your awesome swim!

One question: How does this post NOT mention bachelorette season premiere tonight?!? haha :)

Reply

Race photos are so inspiring! I agree – 50s/60s is the perfect temp to run. Today was great too, it was probably low 70s, but with a nice windy breeze to keep me cool.
Driving with music is my favorite, although I usually break out the singing when it's just me in the car.

Reply

haha- love your pool thoughts! I think about blog posts during the day, too. Sometimes they just come to me and I write down the idea in the notes of my iPhone so I don't forget it. :)

I love cous cous and will have to try those add in's! I wanted you to know I was looking at one of your posts where you had a picture of you making a crazy face, and my mom walked by and said, "That is an interesting picture…" Haha. I love your fun personality that comes out in your blog:)

OMG! I SING ALLLLLLLLL THE TIME! and I DEF sing while I've on the cardio machines at the YMCA…actually throw an air drum in the mix every now and then as well! :)

I sing to my husband when we are driving on the highway.

Nope, don't think in 'blog' yet. Guess I haven't been at it long enough.

Omg Janae – I feel the same way about my hair…your face put it perfectly! I went swimming this weekend and I can't believe how FAST everyone is!! =)
As for running temp…if it's a race, I like it 40!

I just had the perfect running weather yesterday – it was cloudy in the mid 50s. Loved it!! And it looks like the half marathon is going to be 70s with scattered t-storms. Boo..

I love singing in the car. :-) And I love couscous.

Gosh your blog cracks me up. I think about blogging 90% of the time. I try to plan the entire post in my head before I type it up. 90% of the time it sounds better in my head. But the other 10% it makes for a nice easy write up.
I sing in the car all the time. I probably look like a weirdo, but it makes time go by faster.
