I did it, I made wheat bread.  I have never done this before and thought I might as well invest (aka steal from my mom’s house) wheat flour and go for the gold.

I used this recipe and Billy even liked it.

P.S. I am still mad at you Billy because of the whole ‘Golden Oreo’ situation.  He thinks that I don’t like Golden Oreos and wouldn’t share any of his because a long time ago I said the normal ones are SO much better.

That doesn’t mean I don’t like the golden variety, it just means that normal Oreo’s make me drool.  Add double stuff into the equation and I am a goner.

For dinner I made a talapia salad with all the fixings.  I grilled the fish on the George Foreman, invest in one of these.

How to make a good salad 101:

-Some sort of protein (fish is my first choice, love me some talapia).

-Cheese and lots of it.  Think feta, mozzarella, parmesan.

-Any and all produce that you have in your fridge and throw it all together.

-Make sure it is ginormous, like it could feed a family of four.  Heck, its salad you can go a little crazy.

-Oh an some form of delicious carb with jam or butter on the side always does the trick.

Do you snack when you bake?

-I accidently ate 2 dough balls while I was baking the bread….crap.

Golden, Normal or Double-Stuffed Oreo’s?

-Double-stuffed makes me happy, but any Oreo would suffice.

What are your Salad 101 tips for me?

-I need some new tips…..

I cracked up when you said you stole wheat flour from your mom – I take something from their house every single time I go there. Yesterday it was a potato and half a loaf of french bread for the husband. Times are tough – okay not really, I just hate going to the store every day.

The three P's: peaches, parmesan, and (hearts of) palm.

DOUBLE STUFFED ALL THE WAY! I believe that is what Shane and I have had for snack the last 500 nights. Last night at 11:30 I told him I was hungry and could not fall asleep without a snack, hinting he should bring me a glass of milk with oreos. He did because he is a keeper and I ate about 5 in bed without ever even sitting up. That talents!

I don't really eat salad, which is kind of crazy because I'm a vegetarian. oh well. Double stuff oreos all the way. and you have to snack while you bake, otherwise how do you know if you're making something delicious????

Here's the most random salad idea…I like my romaine (or whatever green I use) to be a little soggy..for lack of better word. So I nuke the leaves for about 30-60 seconds, depending on how much I use. I love them wilty. Call me crazy. Roasted veggies are great on salad too. So I guess I really can't consider mine a 'salad' since it's not completely raw…

Oh and I definitely shop in mom/dad's pantry & fridge when I'm at their house. Why is it that they always have such better stuff than me?!

I've never had a golden oreo but have to say my fave are the peanut butter creme ones…do they even still make these?? Oh and the candy cane ones, of course only this time of year I see them!

I always say that it is absolutely necessary to snack while cooking. Quality control, right? Don't want to serve my family anything that doesn't taste good. So I have to test out the food. =D
As for salads, I like to top them with cottage cheese sometimes, or get those edible bread salad bowls form the grocery store. They actually look sort of like pita pockets, but say "Salad Pocket" on the package. I also like to use salsa or hot sauce as a dressing of sorts, just to mix things up a bit.

I love a good Greek Salad with feta and calamata olives. Peppers and tomatoes are a must on that one.

I love the regular oreos, but would eat the double stuff. Golden oreos? No way! The originals all the way. I have to confess I haven't had an oreo cookie probably since 2008.

In the summer I put grapes in my salad. And yes I snack while I bake. I eat so much cookie dough or regular bread dough while baking, its sad. I usually bake before dinner and then I am not hungry for dinner. Opps.

1. I definitely snack when I bake. Who doesn't??
2. I don't eat a lot of oreos, but when I do, go big or go home! Double Stuff all the way!
3. Sorry, I don't have much in the way of suggestions for salads. What I've learned about myself, though, is that I really like spinach based salads rather than lettuce based salads. Once I figured that out, I started eating WAAY more salad than I did before.

I am a crazy salad maker, I have a mondo one for lunch most days. I pretty much make mine the same way you do. I like to top it with shrimp or chicken that was marinated in balslmic.

Also goat cheese and Craisins often make an appearance- SO good together!
I recently tried supplementing in beans instead of meat and it worked pretty well, normally I hate beans, but black beans + corn or black-eyed peas (yum!) did the trick!!!!

Oh girl, if you like Oreos you are going to flip for the recipe I am posting tomorrow… hang tight! (p.s. double stuffed all the way!)

Try gorgonzola cheese on your salad! Mmmm….

1. You made the fish in your George Forman?? My H has an aversion to cooling anything in ours that isn't "even", so he refused chicken and pork so far… Sigh.

2. Any Oreo is a good ore, but I loooove the original most. The cookie part is my favorite <3

3. My salad strategy is the same. A protein, all produce I can muster up, and GO. Except I could not do bread with jam. I have a THING about my protein mingling with fruit. It freaks me out.

Ok, this is my favorite salad:
1) peel a sweet potato, slice into thin circles and lay out on a slightly greased baking sheet. You can also use a zucchini and beets (yuuuum).
2) Sprinkle a little salt and pepper over the veggies, roast at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Flip the veggies over and roast for another 8-10 min.
3) In the meantime, take a huge plate and layer baby spinach, sliced mushrooms, dried cranberries, slivered almonds, and blue cheese (or goat/feta). Add the roasted veggies when done. YAY.

My kids have been begging for some home made flax seed wheat bread for a month, and today I finally got around to it. It's rising on the counter.

Not a posted option, so I will add a write in: MINT Oreos. Mint Oreos are the best.

OH AND BY THE WAY — I helped plan a blogger meetup at Boston last year… Obvi I live here and will probs sign up for the Sunday 5K again, since I'll never qualify for Boston and it's too close to the Hyannis Marathon in February for me to even consider. That's all.

I always eat so much batter when I bake…I can't help it!

That salad looks delicious! I think I need a Forman Grill. I get tired of clearing the snow off the grill in the winter.
I just barely made bread for the first time this year. It was surprisingly easy and my whole family loves it and begs for it. I have a super good recipe if you want to ever try another one!
And Oreo's just aren't worth it to me. I like me a soft cookie. Like right out of the oven kind.

Here's a link to that recipe! So easy and SO good!

Question of the day: how in the heck do you find time to bake and cook such amazing goodness? I'm still struggling to find time to make a box of mac and cheese! But for whatever it's worth, I'm bookmarking the bread recipe! Gracias!

Hahaha – my Billy never forgets antyhign I say so we'd probably run into a similar problem like yours with Oreos. He likes to prove his points – it's the lawyer in him. :)

Your salad tips are great! I love to add 1/2 an avocado or a big glob of hummus to mix around like a creamy dressing. And pepitas or walnuts. And fresh-cracked pepper. And I love to toast pita strips for the top as well. OR roasted chickpeas – amazing!

I probably get half my calories in a day from picking while I cook. How else will you know if your ingredients are fresh and not rotten ;) Think of it as quality control. NOT TO MENTION…on Top Chef (the Holy Grail), they are always zinging people for not tasting the food before putting it out.

You must always eat something delicious or at least delicious looking…Billy must LOVE that you write this blog because you always have extra motivation to cook something up that is beautiful for a picture. :) What does Billy think about your Blog? Is he like "Come on…you're always on that thing?!" or does he love that you do it? Just curious. Love your food pictures as always. We eat salad all the time… we use whatever is around…cranberries, feta, tomato, onion, nuts and some kind of cranberry dressing is my fav.

oh boy! We are an Oreo family. My mom has an addiction to them and she's passed it on to my children. The thing they look forward to most on our summer camping trips with Grammy and Grampy are (of course the fishing!) but next in line is finding the Oreos. We are NEVER without!

I snack all the time when I bake. I eat so much that nothing I ever make comes out a full batch! Also, nothing compares to OREO CAKESTERS. God, they are delightful!

Reply

I've actually never had Oreos…is that weird? Should I try them?
And I ALWAYS snack when I bake. Actually, I always snack full stop, but go into overdrive when baking! :P

Another SUPER yummy creation! The bread looks so chewy, it is making my mouth water right now!

I LOVE, LOVE goat cheese on my salad, but feta is cheaper. And, find that adding nuts (pine sliced almonds, walnuts) works for a crunchy bite.

And, yes please to double-stuffed or quaddrupled stuffed! Why aren't those available yet?!

you eat bread dough? me too. My friend thinks i'm gross.

Your bread looks awesome! I haven't had the golden oreo's but I don't like oreo's unless I have them with milk then I totally agree with you-double stuffed!

Dinner looks great and I can't not eat while I bake! Haha :)

Salad tip: Top with hummus! It's my new favorite way to eat salads (no dressing required!)

I've been wanting to make bread from scratch. Haven't yet…

You know ever since I started following you I have a desire to photograph my food for you! HAHAHA!!

I steer clear of Oreos! and head straight for the chocolate chips. Nice bread! It's hard to bake with straight W/W.

I salad that has a nice assortment of greens and red onions and green olives and capers and even…anchovies if they are around. I must be salt deficient.

Double stuf is the only true oreo!

Golden oreos are addictive but I haven't given up on the originals. I don't snack when I bake and I don't know why.

Reply

the best oreos: mint double stuff! and if you can find the fudge-covered ones, all the better.

I LOVE baking bread, but I honestly haven't done it for at least a year because I never find time to be home for more than 4hrs (or on call) for that long! I always end up having a class, or an errand that gets in the way :( But screw those excuses, because over x-mas break I'll make sure it gets done! :D

Omg, I love fresh homebaked bread, esp. wheat…but I don't like cooking or baking. Your salad looks so good. Your pics always make me want to eat healthy salads, veggies, and fruit. No tips though, just trying to get the salad into my body. Peanut butter double stuffed oreos are the best, but I must say that the golden ones are delicious. There are mega calories though….like 140 for 2 cookies or something crazy like that! What? yeah!
