It was the annual jingle run that Runner’s Corner puts on each year!
It’s always nice to catch up with friends I haven’t seen in months as we run up the canyon.
My body is so used to taking a day off from running after the long run, so that is one tricky part about doing long runs on Friday… I have to finish up my mileage for the week on Saturday.
We had a Christmas party at church.
Beck could currently live off of Core Power, banana, peanut butter smoothies.
The kids let us sleep in on Sunday morning until 8:30. I hit 70.5 miles last week, and a solid night of sleep was necessary.
Just a normal Sunday.
These two have sure been bonding lately…
I finished Night Road. Whenever I finish a book by Kristin Hannah, I think, ‘This is my new favorite one of hers.’ The story was heartbreaking but so beautiful. I already want to reread it. Which Kristin Hannah book should I read next? So far, I have read Nightengale, Four Winds, The Great Alone, and Night Road.
Also, holiday candy > normal candy.
We lost count of how many movies we watched on Sunday. Brooke wasn’t feeling well, so a Christmas movie marathon was the best medicine.
And now for today’s random topic of the day:
This article! It talks about why doing speed work/running feels harder in the dark than in the light. Last Friday, when we did our speed workout, the first set (at a 6:32 average) felt harder than the last few miles of the 2nd set (6:14 average) because the first set was in the dark (PITCH dark.. there weren’t even cars or street lights for the majority of it) and the last few miles (when my legs should have been more tired) felt easier because it was light out by then. It’s not just you… it is proven!
Running in the dark makes it harder to judge your speed based on objects around you. It’s also more challenging to get distracted in the darkness by your surroundings, so it’s just you and your brain, making your perceived effort seem harder than the same pace may feel in the light.
There is a reason the pros usually run in daylight; running in darkness does not aid in performance, but…
Doing speed in the dark will make race day feel so much easier:)
Do you find it harder to hit paces in the dark vs the light?
-Yes, but simultaneously, it’s nice to get some interval sets done before you have woken up fully;). Also, it’s part of fitting marathon training with parenthood/working/life!
How often do you run in the light vs the dark?
Does anyone want to tell me which of Kristin Hannah’s books to read next?
When is school out/work off for you and your people this winter break?

Is that why track in the winter feels so much harder?! We run at 6:30 pm once a week year round, but in the winter between the dark and the cold I find the effort is more intense.
I am off work for the holidays starting tomorrow! My boyfriend and I are traveling to visit my family for Christmas.
The Hungry Runner Girl
It totally is, Mariah! It is proven that the dark makes the perceived effort more difficult. When that light comes, you will feel so strong. SO happy you guys are able to go to your family, enjoy the start of the holidays tomorrow!

Read the Winter Garden…please! It is an incredible story and much like so many of her other books , it made me look up some historical events of the era to learn more. It is really an incredible story…it doesn’t seem to be as well known as some of her other books….but it should! Also highly recommend The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes when you are finished with Winter Garden…totally unrelated, but amazing as well. Have a great day!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Thank you SO much. I will get it today! Oh I love Jojo Moyes, I will grab it. Thanks Sharon, I am hooked right now and needed moreeeeeeeeee. Hope you do to, Sharon!

I was also going to suggest Winter Garden – I read it last year and it blew me away. Let us know what you think once you read it! It’s a beautiful story.

Beck swaddle in bed next to you is so cute!!
Thanks for sharing the dark effect! That makes me feel much better from when I couldn’t hit a 5K time trial this fall in the dark.
Remind me what a holiday break is?? I work Christmas this year. No complaints, it’s just my turn and I get other days off. :)
I switch up running times based on sunlight. Mostly for my mood/mental health. Sunshine in the winter is a treat!
Adding this book to my Good Reads list!
The Hungry Runner Girl
YES… my friend (he went to MIT so I believe everything he says haha) says to take 10 seconds off each mile for the dark effect. Booo but you are having a great attitude… Andrew is just like you. I’m with you, the sunshine right now just feels so special. Hope your day is a great one, Molly!

I really liked “Winter Garden” by Kristin Hannah. My last day of work is Thursday, and then I’m off till 1/2/24! I have a lot of running around to do Friday but then hopefully settle into some semblance of stillness after that :) Have a great day!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Grabbing it today! Thank you so much. SO happy you get such a great break! Enjoy the stillness, I’m so happy to be done with shopping so we can do the same. Happy Monday, Courtney!
Jennie

Wendy
I love Kristin Hannah too. I’ve only read a couple, but have all her books on my list.
Skye and Beck in the sleeping bag…. So cute.
So interesting about the optic affect of running in the dark. When I was consistently running before everyone got up, I think I was faster. I think because no one else was out and about except the coyotes, so I wanted to be back home quick. Ha ha
My husband is teaching until Thursday, then he’s off for 2 weeks. This Christmas season has gone by so fast! I can’t believe Christmas day is just a week away.
Have a good Monday Janae
The Hungry Runner Girl
Isn’t that crazy how much it makes a difference? I could see how the coyotes could actually make you run faster! Two weeks off and I forget, will the boys be home? Hope your day is a beautiful one, Wendy!
Andrea Rueter
Winter Garden was my first Kristin Hannah book and is probably still my favorite of hers. I also loved Angel Falls. I haven’t read the Great Alone but it’s on my list!
The Hungry Runner Girl
Oh this is so good to hear! I’ll get both. You have to let me know what you think of the Great Alone. I couldn’t put it down. have a wonderful day, Andrea!
Catie
I also suggest Winter Garden and Home Front. Husband is off starting Wednesday. Kids are off starting Friday!
The Hungry Runner Girl

Torrie
Home Front by Kristin Hannah is really good! So is Angel Falls.
I’ve been doing LOTS of headlamp runs this season but I’m usually with a friend so it feels easier. But getting up and out the door when it is dark is always hard :-)
The Hungry Runner Girl
How has she written so many amazing books? I’m grabbing them! Thank you! So true about having the friend making it easier! Have the best day, Torrie!

Waittt, I don’t think I read anything after your kids slept until 8:30 am!?!?! Our almost 2 year old is nonstop up at 5:30 am ….
Warren Footz
don’t know about anyone else, but early mornings or evenings, in the dark just always seems quicker/faster……..trail running with lots of turns and changes in elevation feels the same…may not be quicker, but feels like that…
right now I’m dealing with being ill….a flu thing..grrr….thinking this is something new, but, I looked back at journals, every December…every year…….
Renee
FIREFLY LANE by Kristen Hannah – it’s an oldie but oh so good!
