Trust her + this is how we do it.

Friends who do your marathon training runs with you even when they aren’t marathon training deserve an award. I was so grateful they met me in the cold.

Stopping at the car wash to get some water is always fun. We were all so thirsty during our run, so we stopped anywhere and everywhere we could go for water.

Snow (top left corner) and leaves in the same picture. I am not missing the 80-degree runs and thoroughly embrace the cold chill in the air (as long as my fingers and ears are warm).

Maddie had on the prettiest Hokas I have ever seen, and the first thing I did in my car after the run was purchase a pair. It was the perfect timing because I needed a new pair. She said they are the perfect combo between the Clifton and Rincon. Cushioned, light, and a bit wider. Maddie worked at Runner’s Corner for a while, so I always trust her when she says a pair of shoes is excellent.

I did a modified strength for runners class on the peloton app, and every move burned so badly. I took some time off from upper body strength because of my tendonitis, and it’s crazy how fast my muscles forget what to do when I take a break.

Andrew worked all weekend, Brooke was with her dad, and Knox was with his mom, so it was just the little ones and me. PS I had a question the other day about how we do custody with our bigger kids… With Knox, we follow the Utah Code, so the calendar is laid out for us on how to do 50/50, and with Brooke, we take it a month at a time with availability, he comes here one month, and we take her there the next month (it’s pretty amazing how well that has worked for nine years now!!). We also switch off with holidays!

Skye experienced her first macaron ever and was very happy about it.

Beck loved the clocks changing.

We watched the New York City Marathon together and about halfway through she ran into her room to change into running clothes. Even the four-year-olds are inspired when they watch a marathon.
We go through Mel’s healthy applesauce muffins in roughly a day.
The highlight of Sunday was seeing Brookie again.
Also, I’m really hoping at my next race there is one of these.

Are you missing summer running or happy to have said goodbye?

How do you feel about macarons? Love them, or would you rather have a different type of cookie?

How do you split up the time with anyone who shares custody with their kids?

Last pair of running shoes that you bought?

You know, I first read your question #1 as “are you happy you stopped running?” and while I miss it–I miss what, 10 years ago, was a long unfurling road of space to work out anything and everything that comes my way and learn to be OK with the world (exactly as it is) all over again–since so many things have changed drastically in my body and running doesn’t feel good to me, I also don’t miss it. So much is challenging because my body has been feeling very off for a long time, and I know that running wouldn’t help me feel good these days (would you believe it that I never knew of something called perimenopause until this past year and it took me a VERY long time this year to accept that with the onslaught of symptoms it’s what I am dealing with? And other things have been happening, that have lead me to exhaust a lot of “covered by health insurance” medical options and research functional medicine & holistic doctors so I can get a more nuanced understanding of what’s happening…). But at the same time, what keeps me from “missing” running is knowing that I can swap the time and space of an open road for the togetherness and community in the fitness classes I teach at the gym, and through that thing that comes with being “of service” as an instructor, instead of learning to be OK with the world again I root myself more firmly in my world. And that fills a really big bucket for me.

I love that–even for the ways we write and share our lives on social media–your co-parenting situation with Knox’s birth mom and Brooke’s birth dad continue to work well and that you’re able to keep on prioritizing “the more people to love these kids the better they are for it, and the better the world is for it.” I bet that even the best situations come with challenges and sacrifices. But I bet that it’s all so worth it.

I love Skye’s running outfit!!!! AND that she wanted to wear running clothes to watch the NYC marathon with you–and in a sort of extended solidarity with the amazing, talented runners who have worked so hard for the huge thing of being able to reach the start line that day.

You asked about running shoes. Even though i am not running anymore, let’s see–I refreshed my pair of Brooks Glycerins, because when I go to and from the gym for a really intense spin class that i teach (and take at the same time), I really just want marshmallows under my feet. And a month and a half ago, as a belated celebration for my BODYPUMP certification, I got a pair of Reebok Nano X2s on sale, because I needed proper training shoes. And they feel SO GOOD. As far as non-running shoes, I may have gotten a super cute pair of Madewell athleisure sneakers on sale. And I may have gotten a pair of chestnut brown suede lug sole loafers on the 6pm website. (smile) Because–you know–sometimes I need to NOT wear joggers, pajamas, or workout gear. And that means that sometimes I need to wear “real” shoes ;)

I hope the week ahead is a really good one for you and your crew, Janae! :)

Stephanie, I didn’t know you were going through perimenopause. I am so so sorry but thankful you were able to figure out what was happening. Your classes are so grateful that you teach and have created the community that you have. I think it has been the perfect switch! Yes yes yes… the more people that love them, the better and I can forget about the small things. So glad you got a new pair of Glycerins, they are just so comfortable. And now I want to copy your sneakers… they sound like the perfect pair for when you need real shoes;). Thanks friend, you too!

Last pair of running shoes saucony speed but now might need the Hokas you have!

Um desperately missing summer running. I went out for 21km in the rain yesterday and came home straight into a hot bath!

I prefer oatmeal raisin cookies but I have enjoyed macaroons too.

Happy Monday and happy running Janae!

I think you need some of the Hokas too:). I bet you were frozen yesterday. I swear the weather changed drastically faster than ever this year. I hope you get some oatmeal raisin cookies soon. Thanks Kristine, you too!

Ha ha, Beck’s grumpy face! Such a cutie.
I love watching marathons! So many inspiring stories. I felt so bad for the guy who was in the lead, then stepped off the course and collapsed to the ground with about 5 miles to go. It sounded like the humidity was horrible! That is so tough.
I don’t think I have had a macaroon. But a gooey chocolate chip cookie is always my favorite.
Running friends are the best! And I too, am very happy that summer weather/heat is done. I love the cool mornings.
Have a great day and start to the new week!

YES… that was heartbreaking. He looked SO strong. Also, I could not believe how fast he was in the bathroom too. I hope you get one of those gooey chocolate chip cookies asap. That sounds so good right now. Thanks Wendy, you too!

I love the snow, shoveling is the best cross training ever!..I just hate driving in this stuff
I also watched the NYC yesterday, and follow a couple of people that ran it on STRAVA….OMG, a 3 minute kilometre!..I don;t drive that fast!
Which Hokas are they?….I always laugh when people have no idea how t pronouce the On On at the end…I don’t judge..and love how Hoka’s were created the story of Mica and John Luc is inspiring…
My last shoes were I think the Brooks Glycerines….but am using my Saucony Peregrine Ice+ now, keeping the feet warm and the traction on ice is good

Andrew says the same thing about snow shoveling ha. They are the Mach 5! I need to look into the Hoka story. I need to try those shoes out, I hate cold toes. Hope your day is a great one, Warren!

I LOVE macaroons, which is actually a type of coconut cookie. I’ve never had a macaron though, which is the cute French cookie Skye is holding! I’ve always wanted to try one though, they’re so beautiful! Don’t want to be that person, but just love my coconut cookie so much! Also those hokas are beautiful, I’ve never strayed from my Clifton’s…But I might need to.

I was coming to say the same thing about macaroon versus macaron. It’s confusing, but I love them both so much :)

OOPS!! Thanks for pointing that out Tess and Tamara! Now I need a macaroon though… those coconut cookies are the best. Let me know if you leave your Clifton’s for these haha. They are so pretty. Have the best day!

Happy Monday HRG!
Thanks for the question around sharing kids’ time. My boyfriend has 50/50 custody of his daughter, and I have 100% custody of my 2 sons. We are navigating blending our families, and its tricky when a single child is in and our of our home each week… would love to hear more thoughts about blending families (and looking forward to the comments here!).

Also – any chances you have gift guides coming up – especially for kids? My kiddos are 10 (boy), 7 Boy, and 7 girl and I love hearing about things you are loving each year!

Hey Nikki! Thank you for sharing in the comments what you guys do. It truly is tricky and I am ALWAYS here for emails about how things work because I am pretty careful about what I post online but I’d love to chat more! YES YES YES to the gift guides, I’ll get working on them today. Thanks friend, have a beautiful day!

Hi Janae! Those shoes are so pretty!! Last shoes I bought were my beloved Mizuno wave riders… I found one I love and I have like 8 pairs. Not sure what I’ll do when I wear out the last pair!
Happy Monday!

I loved the wave riders! They were pretty much my first real running shoes, it makes me happy to hear you love them. Thanks Amy, happy Monday to you!

Hi Janae! I ran the NYC marathon yesterday! The conditions were super tough (it was 73F at the start + humid), so I decided to be sensible and from the start decided to aim for my B goal (sub 4) rather than my A goal – I finished in 3:59:21 with super consistent pacing which I’m so proud of. Following your running journey has inspired me to set big goals for myself but also accept that it takes a while to achieve those dreams, and that’s OK!

CONGRATULATIONS. I do not know how you all did that. I can’t even imagine! HUGE congrats on hitting your B goal and staying consistent. You were so smart and it paid off. I hope you have been refueling with amazing food and getting some rest. Thank you for sharing that with me, it means a lot. Have the best day and keep me updated with everything!

Congratulations, Emily! You’re amazing! Way to deal with those tough conditions :)

I am sooo thankful for cooler weather! We live in really moderate winter conditions but it got up to 115 in Sept. this year.

My 15-year-old makes the best macarons! It’s his specialty and they are gluten-free so I dig them :)

I’ve been really digging the Saucony Endorphin Pros and I just bought some Endorphin Speeds so we’ll see how I like them. I’ve been saving them for marathon training this spring.

Congrats to Emily on her NYC marathon! I ran NYC yesterday too and it was super tough conditions! I also think I forgot how many climbs there were with the bridges. I had re-read your St George race recap and listening to the positive voice on one shoulder vs the negative on the other and I had to re-focus on that positive voice that said I was strong, and I would not give up. I ran a 3:05 and while not my fastest I had hit my goal after dealing with some injuries this training cycle! Thank you for sharing what helped you to push through your tough race! I am now ready for some cooler temps!

Incredible race in extreme conditions! Absolutely amazing and I’m glad I could help a bit! You deserve alllllllllll of the cooler temps now! Happy recovering!

That Mario cube is great!
I do not miss running in the heat. Neither does my dog. It’s been too warm lately (18-25° Celsius and humid. We’re typically hovering around freezing this time of year!)
Latest shoes arrived today. ASICS Nova Blast 3! They’re pretty and comfy. Also got the New Balance Rebel V3 a couple weeks ago. Loving them both and looking forward to lots of miles in them.

Are those Hoka Mach 5’s? If so, I wore those yesterday for the NYC Marathon! I ❤️ them. Today I just bought the new Hoka Carbon X 3. Hoping that I’ll like them for the Houston Half in January.

Ahhhhhhhhh congratulations! And Houston coming up too?! You are on fire!
