I have invested way too much.

I needed a non-running/cardio day, and I opted for yoga at home instead.

(Tank, leggings, shoes, mat)

I did make the rookie mistake of attempting yoga with Beck and Skye awake.  There were about 30 seconds total when they weren’t climbing on me, making the twenty minutes very exciting.

Skye was not happy that Beck kept trying to take over her mat.

PS I see a lot of Flare leggings around lately.  My first pair of leggings ever were flared like this one below, but I am not sure I will go back to them because as Andrew says, I have invested way too much money into all of the leggings I already have and probably don’t need any more;). Plus, I’m guessing these would be hard to run in?!  Any thoughts?

Add some flare to your wardrobe

It was gymnastics day for Skye.

On average, Skye asks for my nephew to come over 54 times.  Yesterday was her lucky day.

Andrew and I decided some weeks call for two date nights…

We had both been craving one of these bowls.  I want to eat here every single day of my life.

IMG 3535

Bowls Superfoods is right by the indoor track at BYU, so we decided to walk around in there for a few minutes (Utah dramatically went back to winter again, so a walk outside was not going to happen).

I attempted my first (and last) hurdle… how do people do these?

IMG 3530

And we watched a guy run barefoot for a while, which is not something my feet will EVER let me do.

Off to do a speed workout and wishing that my run ended like this again…

PS my race is coming up, and as I was looking at the race website, this picture freaked me out.  I will stay very, very far away from the buffalo.

Flare leggings are just a rebrand of yoga pants lol. Nothing against them but why change the name?!

I only run barefoot in the grass for strides. Otherwise it’s a hard pass. Someone would have to be chasing me to run barefoot for a long time on anything other than grass.

Have a great day Janae!

Reply

Haha I agree, I think maybe just to get us to be excited about something new?! Yep, I don’t even think I could run barefoot if someone was chasing me! I hope your day is a great one too, thanks Maureen!

I have to acknowledge the perfection that is Beck’s squat form! ?? I almost never comment, but I look forward to your posts ever day! Thank you for sharing!

Yoga is amazing! I’m currently working on my 200-hour yoga teacher training (at age 51!). Keep it up—starting at a young age will benefit you your whole life! ?‍♀️

Wow, I definitely had some flared yoga pants back in the day. It’s so funny when I see my students coming to school in bell bottom jeans on free dress days because I remember that being a thing back in the 90s when I was in middle school. I love seeing trends repeat themselves, but I prefer the skinny fit when it comes to my own leggings or jeans. And I definitely don’t need to buy any more leggings for a long while- I recently bought some Senior activewear and I can’t wait to try everything on when it comes in! Those smoothie bowls look divine, yum! Happy Thursday!

Reply

Oh I bet that is quite the flashback to see your students wearing all of the things that we used to wear! I love the skinny fit too. Yay for new workout clothes coming… that is just the best box to get on the front doorstep. Thanks Emily, you too!

I see flares and think someone is lying to me. Back again? Really? Nah. They always end up dragging on the ground.
Workout clothes fashion that’s not for me: bras/tops that cover the ribcage and then stop, and low- or mid-rise bottoms. These were invented to accentuate the area that most needs to be covered, which is where evidence of my pregnancies shows, LOL!
I’ve run barefoot on the beach in the past, but I think my calves and Achilles would disagree on that plan now.
Can I guess which superfood bowl is yours? I’ll say the one on the left?

Reply

Hahaha someone is lying to you! I remember mine always ended up so dirty. I willlllllll neevvvvvveeeeeerrrr be wearing low rise anything either. Not for me (even before babies!) haha. You know me too well, you are correct! I hope your day is off to a great start, thanks Corey!

Reply

I’ve seen a few fashion bloggers I follow share the flared yoga pants and I was thinking darn I shouldn’t have sold my lulu’s from 10 years ago haha but I honestly don’t think I’ll ever go back to that style now, even if it is coming back.

Reply

Haha we should just always hang on to everything we own because at some point, it will be back! I hope your day is a great one, thanks Ashlea!

Yoga pants … I loved my flared yoga pants! But definitely not good for running. Super comfy for lounging though.
Every time I do pilates or yoga, I have my cats all over me… Ha ha… Every time!
Love acai bowls! So refreshing and yummy.
Oh my goodness, our weather is all over the place right now! I got up early for my run, and the wind is insane!! I do not like running in strong wind. Is there one (or a couple) types of weather you won’t run in?
Hopefully I’ll be able to squeeze in something after a morning full of meetings.
Have a really good day Janae!

Reply

Hahah I love that your cats join you for your workouts… so supportive of you getting stronger! Running in the wind is my least favorite thing to do. I hope your meetings are going well and that you get in a sweat at some point. Happy Thursday, Wendy!

Good morning, Janae! I love how flexible and bend-y babies are – that updog and squat of Beck’s!! And now I have a wicked craving for a smoothie bowl, thank you :o)
I really dislike flared leggings – I hate all that fabric moving around. Likewise, I’m realllllly not into anything midriff baring for running or anything else. There has been another recent trend (non-running) I have seen of ridiculously short shorts. The bum should have full coverage IMO :o)
My feet won’t tolerate barefoot running. I am in awe of people who do it though – I just can’t imagine what that must feel like, especially when I see them running on roads and sidewalks.
No March races here, but hoping for some later in the spring. Looking forward to your race recap though!! Have an awesome Friday Eve, Janae!!

Reply

Haha Beck is a pro, he needs to teach a class. I’m with you on my bum being fully covered at all times ha! I won’t be in those shorts anytime soon. Right?! I think I could make it like 10 steps barefoot running. Spring racing is going to be here soon wahoo. Thanks Janine, happy Friday Eve (I love that you call it this) to you too!

Reply

I don’t think I want to run in flare leggings either, they would get in the way! I also still wear skinny high waisted jeans, even though those go in and out of style.

Those bowls look amazing, I want one now!

Reply

I am positive that they would make me trip on the run! I think those pants will just ALWAYS look good. Hope you get an acai bowl soon! Thanks Mariah, have a great Thursday!

Do you remember the brand SoLow? Was that a thing in Utah? I had a bunch of flare leggings in high school with the tops that fold over. Oh man, wearing those, my rainbow flip flops and a sweatshirt with the top cut off so it shows your shoulders (or tank top underneath) was a LEWK. I don’t think I want to go back there. haha
Shamrock marathon is in March!! EEEKKK! I’m in the final weeks of hard training. Yesterday I superman fell during my warm up and scraped up my knee and hip. haha. I think my legs are starting to rebel. :)
Have a great day!

Reply

You just brought back SO many flashbacks for me! Hahah I am dying… could we have been any cooler wearing that? Your marathon is next month. I’m serious, I want to fly out to watch. I am so invested in this. BUT NOOOOO to the fall. I hope you are okay and that it doesn’t hurt today! I think your body is REALLLLLLLLY ready for that taper! Thanks Mollie, you too!

Chris thinks flare leggings are super flattering on me, so I have a pair, looking to purchase another. I will be watching your blog for links to my next pair ;)
I agree though, not for running. Just for running errands and such.

Reply

Well, now I need the link for the ones you already have. Hahaha it’s true, I just keep investing into these workout clothes so expect them here soon;). Hope your day is a great one with Chris, Hope and work!

No barefoot running, but I did run 110 High and 300M Intermediate hurdles my first year in High School track. I was not very good at it but it was kinda fun to try – I switched to the 100-400m sprints the year after that.

Reply

I cannot even imagine attempting the HIGH hurdles (or the intermediate haha). Also, the 100-400m sprints so scary to me too! My body just doesn’t work that way haha. I hope you are having a great day and Andrew is just counting down the hours to mountain biking season!

Reply

Interesting. Here in the Pacific Northwest there are a lot of trails maintained so that people can mountain bike year round. Although, it can get pretty wet and muddy. The trail just needs to have proper drainage.

I really need to work a ton on my basic MTB skills like hops, track stands/balance, etc.., There are so many roots and rocks on the trails here – I have been sticking mainly to the roads for my cycling. I wish, like Andrew, I had been cycling my entire life instead of only a year. I’m sure bunny hopping obstacles and going down steep rocky inclines are just natural for him. Oh well, it certainly leaves a lot of room for personal growth!

Reply

That is awesome that mountain biking is available year round in the Pacific Northwest… I think the snow is what usually holds Andrew back a bit in the winter but luckily he still gets out a few times a month. You are doing amazing… one year in and rocking it already! Yay for the personal growth we get from trying new things!

Reply

I would be tempted to try flare leggings again, but the bottoms get dirty! With tight leggings, that never happens. I love biker shorts, but they do not flatter my legs. I try shorter ones and longer ones and they still look funny.

I need to schedule a 5k in March ! I am focusing on sprint triathlons this summer so I need to get a baseline and practice shorter distances…plus, I don’t do speed unless I am forced;-) I have a duathlon at the end of May–so I run a 5k, then bike. My 5k times are usually decent in a triathlon because my legs are still used to the fast turnover from the bike. I won’t have that in the duathlon so I am panicking a bit.

Happy Thursday Janae!

Reply

One of the biggest pros of tight leggings… they stay clean:). So excited about your focus for this summer (teach me to swim) and I love the idea of a 5k in March too. Maybe I’ll join you for the duathlon, that sounds so fun for me! But that is interesting it is run and then bike… I always thought it was the other way around. Thanks Becky, you too!

no races before the half marathon in may, I have tried running barefoot, on a few beaches, but never for more than maybe 1/2 a K…….i occasionally see someone trying it here on our asphalt paths, and it looks painful, and you can tell they probably just read Born to Run

Reply

Super excited about your 1/2 this spring, I hope the weather is perfect! Haha that is exactly what Andrew said yesterday. Have a wonderful day, Warren!

Reply

No flares for me- for jeans or leggings! I’ll stick with my skinny pants..especially when it’s wet outside. Yuck!

I don’t have any races in March (yet…) but I have one this weekend and then one in April! I’m also going to be pacing my first race- it’s a 12 mile loop as part of a 100 mile trail race. The 12 will be tough for me so I am in awe of the people who are doing all 100!

Reply

Oh I forgot about what would happen with my flared jeans and leggings when it was wet or snowing! AHHHH good luck this weekend and that is so exciting that you are pacing your first race! 12 miles is awesome and I’m with you… I will always be in awe of people that do 100. That will never be on my list of accomplishments ha. Hope your day is a great one, Gretchen!

I just can’t with the flare anything! It reminds me too much of my Aunts in the mid-70s LOL They were stylish then(I suppose) but my mind just says “no thank you.”
Prepping for the Mt. Charleston Revel half marathon in Las Vegas in March. ALL downhill, yes please!
I can go barefoot for about 0.5 in the grass but that is my limit.
Have a great day!!

Reply

The friend I ran with today is training for Mt Charleston wahoo. You are going to rock it! I’ve done that half too and I loved it so much. Your feet are strong! Yep, I am not one for the 70s look either. Thanks Dawnmarie, you too!

Flare leggings and most pants in general are generally better for taller people. The great thing about leggings for us short people is that they can be pulled up to fit. I say go for it for your yoga days!

Reply

So so true about the benefits of normal leggings… they are just great for everyone. I might eventually cave and try them! Hope your day is a great one, Steph!

Reply

Hi Janae! I have to agree with everyone else, flared leggings are just yoga pants! And yeah I don’t like running in them either cuz I feel like they drag (could be in my head but who knows?). A fashion trend I can’t get behind is wearing crop tops when I work out! I don’t have any issues with my abdomen but I still don’t like showing it.
We made it home last night after a long long drive! It was fun to be traveling and visiting my parents for a few months but now I’m ready to be home.
Have a great day!

Reply

So much drag with those… I remember they would always be so dirty when I used to wear them! You made it home wahooo. I bet you were so ready to sleep in your own bed again, you guys have been gone for so long. Thanks Amy, you too!

Flare Leggings – is that the same as yoga pants? I have several but I’ve had for years. I wear more for dog walking or just causuL wear, not running

Reply

I am pretty sure they are the same thing and your uses for them sound perfect… not sure how I could run in those. Have a great day, Mary!

My husband bought me a couple flare leggings for Christmas. I looked like a clown when I put them. Needless to say he got a good laugh and they were exchanged for normal ones.

Reply

Hahaha I am glad they had a good exchange policy and you could get some new normal ones. Thanks for sharing and have a great day, Courtney!

I get so nervous about the flare legging and low waisted style pants coming back! Not because I won’t be in style (who cares?) but because I won’t be able to buy any more of my precious high waisted tight legged leggings and jeans I love so much. I have long legs and a very high waist, so I think I look ridiculous in all the new styles coming back. I did my time in the 90s with those, let’s move on, folks! :)
Have a great day, Janae!

Reply

RIGHT?! Low rise will never ever be a thing for me but I do think that our precious high waisted/tight leggings will always be sold somewhere and we will help each other find those locations ha. ‘I did my time in the 90s’ thank you for the laugh. Happy Thursday, Stacey! Have a great day with your boys/work/husband!

Here’s another thing I wouldn’t want to experience. A bull charged cyclists during a race here in California! https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/02/16/cyclists-attacked-by-bull-california/6810798001/

Pretty sure flare leggings would look really funny on me. My legs are super short. There are a lot of fashion trends that don’t really work for me, but the most prominent is pencil skirts. Sorry, I’m just not shaped like a pencil!

I have never run barefoot, although I love going barefoot in my backyard. We have a neighbor who runs barefoot, while carrying one dumbbell that he switches from hand to hand. He’s very good at it, but I picture myself getting hurt trying that.

Reply

OH MY GOODNESS! That is terrifying! I’ve never had to worry about a bull! Oh and I just did not enjoy the feeling of pencil skirts, I just want freedom haha. Your neighbor is tough but I’m with you, I would be injured 2 minutes into the workout. Have a great day, Kathy!

Your nephew looks just like your dad and brother! So the picture of he and Skye is basically a mini version of your mom and dad.

Flare leggings? Sounds like a winter disaster with all the wet hems flopping around. Nope. I also am not enjoying the boxy cropped *everything* for tops. Athletic companies need to remember that some of us in upper age groups really don’t want those cozy hoodies to be at belly button length.

Reply

I donated ALL of my flared pants once the “skinny” style of bottoms became a thing. I don’t care what the kids nowadays say-I can never go back to the flared look!

You know, I remember after I got certified to teach BODYFLOW in 2012 that leggings for yoga seemed “daring” and everyone was still wearing their straight & flare-leg yoga pants from Athleta and their Groove pants from lululemon. In fact, when I first started investing in “nicer” athleisure, those were literally the first two things I bought (right along with a purple space-dyed half-zip from Athleta as a “treat” for running my first and at this point only marathon). It took me easily a couple of years to get comfortable wearing leggings. Even when my body composition was at a better place than it is now (right around 2012-2014 I was in some of the absolute best shape of my life), I remember feeling SO self-conscious with the idea of leggings. I was even running in cold-gear PANTS from Under Armour and in capri-length pants for most of that time (and skorts all summer long).

And now–maybe because for so long leggings have been THE THING that’s sold, or because I have gotten so used to them, insecurities about the parts of my body that leggings (of all lengths) do NOT hide have gotten pushed aside, and the extra fabric of pants (flare or otherwise) seems a bit too much.

I don’t think I could do those one-strap sports bras. Not only because I am pretty well-endowed, but because I just want both sides to be supported so I don’t have to think about it. Also, perfectly matchy-matchy sets and JUST wearing a sports bra for yoga/running/spin/strength/barre/ALL THE THINGS instead of a top over a bra is something that makes me uncomfortable. When I go to the gym to work out, I know I wind up looking like a sloppy lopsided and sad little fish most of the time. And when I go to TEACH, I am a hot mess by the end of class but am so confident in my ability to coach my riders to a successful sweat session that I don’t really think about how I look or whether anyone wants to look a certain way while doing their workouts.

Maybe over time something will shift and I will get used to the super-aesthetic “outfit” approach to going to the gym the way I got used to leggings. Or maybe I won’t. Who knows.

How do you like the Arahis?
those acai bowls look YUMMY. Now I want one! Maybe that will be my weekend treat? We’ll see. :)

Are you a smoothie person? I am! And I recently learned the BEST hack ever (though I bet everyone out there already knows this hack): add about 1/3-1/2 c of frozen riced cauliflower to your blender along with your smoothie ingredients. It will have ZERO flavor, but it will add some good fiber to help you stay fuller for longer with your smoothie–and it will somehow add ot the creaminess! ALSO, it takes the texture of my smoothie closer to like a frostie from Wendy’s. I will be needing that all summer long (and right now it satisfies the part of me that always wants a cold creamy treat like ice cream–I honestly still have ONE WHOLE PINT of the Haagen Dazs peppermint bark ice cream from the 2 that I bought at Christmas time AND half a pine of my favorite oatmilk ice cream that has been sitting in my freezer with the same amount left in the container for about a month now…this smoothie trick is fire, I tell you!!!).

I hope you’re all having a good day out there! It’s VERY gloomy and overcast here–it’s easy to just feel low-energy even though I slept a lot last night and am generally in a good mood!

:)

No to flare leggings!

I can’t even walk two steps inside my house without shoes on :-) the bottoms of my feet tend to get a sharp sudden bruise and also I can feel plantar fascitis come up if I try to walk even a few steps. I am so cautious with my feet!

Reply

My friend pointed out that “flare” leggings are really just yoga pants. In 1999 we just called them yoga pants, the word “flare” wasn’t needed. Truth.
