A hot date, my fave video (please watch!!) and some random thoughts about blogging!

NEW HRG BABY post—>  31 week update + 26 reasons why marathons are just like pregnancy!

—————————————————–

My Wednesday morning treadmill runs are something that I look forward to a lot… I watch This Is Us.  I actually just started last week splitting up the episode so I have half to run to on Wednesday and half to watch on Thursday because I love running to it so much.  Yesterday I did 4.2 of my miles on the treadmill (already looking forward to finishing the episode today)…

PS Right after my run I got a text from my mom telling me about how she got in a hill workout with her new treadmill while watching HGTV and how excited she was about it… I get it mom, the treadmill and your favorite show does good things for one’s soul.

Once it was light I did 3.3 miles outside!  7.5 miles for the day!  It was warm enough for shorts which was exciting. Running through the leaves is always a good feeling (and makes me think that the kids would be so jealous if they knew what I was doing at that moment ha;).

And then we were off for our school day!

IMG 8276

Along with our normal post-school activities with Knox (including waffles for lunch again:)!

IMG 8292

IMG 8319

We went to our favorite pumpkin patch (ehhh Costco) to pick up pumpkins.  $5.50 for a 24 lb pumpkin, yes please.

IMG 8325

We got the kids some skeleton pajamas and they were pretty stoked about it (they both glow in the dark too… Brooke’s are here and Knox’s are here)!

And then I had my beautiful homemade bread that I’ve been craving for dinner.  I used this recipe and it tasted SO good.

IMG 8358

We also had the ‘homemade’ chicken noodle soup from Costco for dinner too.  The perfect fall dinner if you ask me.

IMG 8359

And putting this on top is the absolute best (also, from Costco).

IMG 8362

Our night ended with attempting to carve the pumpkins!

Like I said above, I’ve got a hot date with my favorite running shoes and my favorite show this morning… maybe I can convince Andrew to come ride the spin bike next to me and workout with me this morning too.

PS I LOVE this video of Cosmo dancing and I had to share it with you.  My brother-in-law (my sister’s husband) trains BYU’s mascot (Cosmo) so I’m extra proud:)

I am coming up on 7 years of blogging (I’ll talk more about that next week)… that means I was 24 years old when I started writing this blog.  Just about the only thing that has stayed the same since the beginning of my blogging days is that I am living in the same area that I did back then but pretty much EVERYTHING else has changed in those seven years… everything from my job to being a mom to my health to my running to my relationships to eating much more appetizing looking food now (how did I used to eat some of the things I used to eat;)… you name it, it has changed!  I thought it would be fun to talk about a few random things about blogging I’ve been thinking about!

*For the first time in the history of me blogging, I have a current official work schedule.  Kindergarten has opened my eyes;)  I was really nervous about this transition in life with Brooke going to kindergarten but between her absolutely loving it and me having a block of time where I sit down at the computer with zero interruptions and chat with you in the comments, write emails, work with sponsors and can actually think about what I want to write… has changed my stress levels completely.  For the previous 6.7 years of blogging most of my work was done once kiddos were asleep or any random time of the day that I could sit down at the computer for a bit.  It has felt AMAZING to have time each day carved out for blogging and I can honestly say, this has been my most favorite time period of blogging thus far because I feel like I’m not light years behind.  Now the tricky part… is figuring out how to get this new little one of ours coming to nap during the exact hours of kindergarten.  Wish me luck;)

*Speaking of this… it will be interesting to see how our life/schedules all change once we have the baby (pray for a good sleeper;).  A reader mentioned the other day about how it was hard to not train normally because she couldn’t be gone as long due to breastfeeding etc.  That got me thinking a lot, I wonder how it will all work together.  I’m guessing many posts will be written with a baby sleeping on my lap for a while.

*I’d love to hear how other bloggers do it but for me when it comes to writing… I usually think of a topic for that day during my run in the morning.  How convenient is that.. running is the time my brain thinks at least a little bit clearly;)  And if my mind is fried during my run, I have a list of topics that I’ve wanted to write about that I choose from there.  And some days, I really just have 23 pictures from that day and want to just journal out the day.   I always add all of the pictures first and then I write.  The pictures give me ideas a lot too!

*I’ve told you this once before but when I was 6 years old I started a newspaper that included all of the happenings of my household (which kids were fighting, the kickball score from the night before, what my mom made for dinner etc) and delivered it to my next door neighbors.  I’m glad the internet has made it a bit easier (and I’m not wasting as much paper anymore;) for me to share my thoughts each day.

*Thank you for letting me share my random stories with you each day.  For example—> Tuesday night I woke up Andrew at 4 in the morning to tell him how mad I was at him for what he did in my dream.   I really need to learn to not get mad at people according to my dreams.  I got over it after my run.

*I wonder what the very first blog ever was about… and yes that did inspire me to look up on Wikipedia, ‘the history of blogging.’  PS I listened to the podcast about how Instagram started and it was really interesting!  The creators of Instagram knew that they had something as soon as Snoop Dog joined the app;)

*I wonder what it will feel like in 20 years when I am not blogging (blogging will last that long right?!  I’m sure you’ll see the kids go off to college and everything I’m assuming;) to not take a million pictures a day.  It’s just my natural reaction now to take a picture of any food that is in front of me or whatever activity I am doing… and what about going for a run without taking a picture, that just sounds bizarre to me now;)  Remember the days when it was probably strange (maybe it still is) to be sitting in a restaurant taking pictures of your food… times have changed!

*The other day a reader told me about how she didn’t have the race day she had been dreaming about and how it seemed like EVERYONE else did and it reminded me to remind you about the highlight reel that social media is.  If anything, if you are bummed about a marathon just remember I’ve been reaching for a marathon personal record for over 7 years now and it hasn’t come (my closest attempt was still over 6 minutes off).. that should make you feel better right;)  We all share our highlights (which is great) but remember they are just the highlights.  Just a friendly reminder (which I have to remind myself daily) that we all have awful races, tough days, trials to learn and grow from and so much more:

NewImage

*I’m always interested in knowing—>  What topics interest you the most when it comes to reading different blogs?  Is it fitness, food, life stuff, the highs and the lows people experience, randomness?  What peaks your interest?

———————————————————————————

One last reminder that I have a new baby post up HERE!!!

———————————————————————————

If you do have any blogging questions… I’d love to answer them in my anniversary post coming up!

What topics interest you the most when it comes to reading different blogs?  Is it fitness, food, life stuff, the highs and the lows people experience, randomness?  What peaks your interest to read about the most?

Carved pumpkins yet?  What is your go-to design?

-Brooke did a poodle, Knox did a graveyard and Andrew and I were too tired to do ours last night;)

Who is watching This Is Us!?  Any other great shows that just started that we should be watching?

When I think about blogging I’m always surprised it lasted this long! Yet here we are LOL. I got our pumpkins at the grocery store too so no shame.

That’s exciting about having a blogging schedule! I bet it will be awesome!

Reply

RIGHT!?!? How in the world has it all lasted so long… hopefully it will for many more years.

SEE YOU SOON!!!!!!

I’ve been following your blog for a couple years now, and love it – actually it’s a bit addictive :)
I guess what I like best about blogs is how fresh and spontaneous it feels, but that they still involve proper writing (as opposed to IG and Twitter, which are more like internet fast food for me).
What I look for in a blog is the feeling of honesty, and also contents that interest me (running/workouts/yoga, family stuff, food, relationship stuff, kids, etc.).
I also enjoy reading about someone who has a completely different life from me (I’m a 35yo childless translator from Switzerland, so Utah is pretty exotic for me :))
And last I would say the regularity is nice – I always read your blog while eating at my desk after my lunchtime workout :)

Reply

Well, you just made my morning. Thank you Sarah! Do you still live in Switzerland? My best friend just moved there (they LOVE it there) so we are trying to find a time to go visit her and we would have to go on a run together! I’m so glad I get to join you for lunch each day!

24 lb pumpkin for $5.50? That’s awesome! That honey butter sounds heavenly, especially on top of fresh baked crusty bread. Not that your loaf needs it, but I just googled why bread is scored at the top – to help release pressure as the yeast expands and prevent the break from unanticipated cracking. :) Science!

Reply

INTERESTING… thanks for sharing that with me Nicole! Come over and have some with the honey butter… it is so good! Have a wonderful day! PS Nicole is my middle name:)

Congrats on coming up on 7 years! When I think back on the last 7 years, NOTHING is the same for me either. But everything has changed in the best ways possible :)

Can’t wait for the new Little Miss to make her blog appearance!

Reply

YES YES YES… it’s amazing to see all of the changes over the course of life and all for the better. Thank you Aimee, I cannot wait either!

Reply

I have been considering starting a blog… could you go through your “how I got started” story?
I generally find blogs that are a combo of things I enjoy, like running, life realness, fitness activities and how that all combines in day to day life. I think you do a great job of sharing everything with us in a way that is so relatable. I would love to see a post from you with recommendations for blogs that are similar to yours!
I started watching The Good Doctor and I really like it. It kind of reminds me of an amalgamation of House, Grey’s Anatomy, and something uniquely it’s own.

DO IT Rhiannon! It is so much fun to do and to look back on! I have two posts that might help:

GOOD CALL on a blog post of my other favorite blogs… I’ll get started on that.

Oh people have told us to start The Good Doctor, we need to asap!

Reply

I made the braided bread recipe you posted about a few weeks (maybe months?) ago. OMG SO GOOD!! I’m obsessed with it and it’s so dang easy!
The BYU video is awesome! I love it. Tell your brother-in-law he is doing an awesome job with training! So cool it’s going viral. With blogging, I love how yes people will show the highs but at the same time they are okay with being more vulnerable and sharing the hard times since life isn’t perfect.

Reply

Oh I am so glad that you loved the braided bread, it is heavenly! Oh I will tell him, thank you so much! I hope you have a great day Maureen and PS I love the Sandra Brown books too!

Reply

I definitely enjoy the “life stuff” of blogs: highs/lows, day to day life, food, being open about struggles. I like a little fitness dispersed in there as well :) Your blog is the perfect combination usually!

Reply

Oh thank you so much Ashleye! I am all about reading the life stuff too… it’s like reading about mini reality shows I guess ha! I hope you have an amazing day!

Reply

I love your blog and have for years, and I love reading blogs about real life stuff. How do you get to the point where blogging is your full-time job, though? I’ve been trying to grow my blog for a while now but still seem to be limited in my readership. :/ I hope someday I can blog and write books and be a speaker at conferences and retreats for young women, but I’m definitely not there yet.

I love This Is Us!! How can one show be SO good?? There aren’t many TV shows I watch regularly (I mainly watch sports), but I make sure I never miss this one!

Reply

YOU TOTALLY can Natalie! I definitely wrote daily for a few years before I made money but sticking with it turned into a full time job… these posts talk more about it! I want to read your book and come to your conferences!

PS your latest post was beautiful, thank you for being so open and vulnerable! I loved this part so much “love will always be there for you—because we’re capable of showing love to anyone in any walk of life.”

Reply

Thank you so much, Janae! You’re always so supportive and encouraging, and I really appreciate it.

Reply

I feel you Natalie! I’ve been trying to grow my blog too and it seems near impossible sometimes ha. Hopefully soon for the both of us things will click!

Reply

Yes! I’m absolutely going to hope that for both of us, Kacee!

Reply

You always come up with good topics for your blog and good questions for your readers! I think that would be hard!

I printed your bread recipe and am going to try it. I’m a decent cook and a good baker, but I have never successfully made bread. Maybe this will break that losing streak! lol

You always make me want to renew my Costco membership! I just wish they were open on Saturday nights!!!!!

I watched This Is Us religiously last season, but I have forgotten every week so far this fall! Ugh! I’ve got some catching up to do!

Reply

Oh thank you so much Jen and PLEASE let me know what you think of the bread. You will rock it! Okay, what you just said about Saturday nights is too true… we always want to go there on Saturday night but never can. Yes, you have some catching up to do… report back to me once you do and we can discuss haha! Have a wonderful day Jen!

Reply

I’ve always loved your blog! My favorite types of posts are the day to day ones or just random personal posts! I like learning more about people this way!

Reply

I swear we have been reading each other’s blogs for 7 years now… or how long have you been blogging?!! I hope you are having a beautiful day Laura!

Reply

I missed the last this is us episode…I need to catch up!

I usually come up with my topics while I run too, and I keep a list on my phone.

When it comes to making money through blogging, what is your favorite way or website or company to work with?

Reply

GREAT QUESTION Jenny… I’ll answer it here in the comments too. Pretty much all of my sponsorships/pay comes through a company called Mediakix. They coordinate all of my deals etc and I love working with them. Oh I need to keep a list on my phone too! Let me know what you think of the latest This Is Us episode… I just finished this morning! Have a great day!

Reply

I’ve seen that video of Cosmo dancing all over Facebook. That is SO COOL that your brother-in-law trains them! Hope you have an amazing weekend!

Reply

Oh that makes me so happy that you have seen it all over Facebook! YES, my brother-in-law does such a good job! Have a great weekend too Samantha!

Reply

I have to say, I’m a little disappointed with this past episode of This Is Us. It is the first episode since it started last season…that it HASN’T made me cry. It was an “ok” episode…but not as emotionally involved! lol

Reply

I am going to agree with you about this last episode… I didn’t come close to crying which is not normal for me (especially pregnant me)! I just need to know what happened to Jack, that episode I will be sobbing! I hope you have a great day Alyssa!

Reply

I’d love to hear about how you built momentum with blogging — as I’d love to get to a point where I blog full time.!

I’m so excited to carve pumpkins this year, but we’ve waited and waited for the weather to break to do it. We didn’t want to put our freshly carved pumpkins outside in 85 degree heat and 95% humidity — that just screams “stinky moldy pumpkin”.

My go-to is a typical Jack-o-lantern face. I just like the classics.

Reply

SUSIE!!! These posts might help a little bit with that first question!

Let me know!

Uhhh yeah, pumpkins would never survive in that weather! I hope it starts to cool down soon. Have a beautiful day!

Your bread looks amazing! Drooling over it over here.
Woot for seven years of blogging! I also think of post ideas when I’m running/walking/swimming. There’s just something about moving that makes my brain more creative.

Reply

YES YES YES… I don’t know why it happens most when we are moving but I’ll take it. The rest of the day I feel like my brain is mush ha. I hope you get some good bread soon!

Reply

First, I love reading about anything you blog about :) It really brings joy to my day (as I’ve said about 100 times in the comments! But I don’t mind repeating : )

I was NOT excited about Me, Myself, and I. I generally don’t find SNL funny so the actor in the show didn’t really pique my interest. HOWEVER, I have really enjoyed the first 3 episodes of Me, Myself, and I. Jaleel White is also great in it. It is a comedy with realness and heart. And NO canned laugh-track.

While I understand the goal of that quote (I think anyway… I guess it is meant to lift people up if they are feeling down or alone?), it is sad to me. And I also don’t think it is reflective of how YOU view life (or at least how it appears on the blog! Understood bad times come to us all…) I did not grow up in pleasantville but even through that I see LIGHT and happiness a majority of the time. I’d like to think and hope that MOST of the time it is roses and butterflies with interspersed darkness. Thankfully that is how my life is (or how I choose to view it) and I wish it for everyone.

Reply

Oh thank you so much Amanda!I cannot wait to try out Me, Myself, and I… thank you!!! I guess I wanted to share it more in context of social media… I think a lot of us get caught up in just seeing the PERFECT lives of everyone online and it’s nice to remind ourselves that no one’s life is perfect… BUT finding the light yourself and feeling gratitude is the key to happiness. It’s not just that one person is happy because their life is perfect but they choose to be happy and see the best in everything (aka what YOU DO… and that is awesome)!! Thank you for sharing Amanda and I hope you are having an amazing day!

Reply

I’ve been reading your blog for years and I love it! It’s so funny how you think about what to write during your run ;)
I would love to hear about how you turned blogging into a full time thing…I’d love to transition into that one day!
Love all the eats from costco -and homemade bread, yum!
I’m loving This is Us – I’m also watching Law and Order: True Crime, and we just started The Brave – so good!

I love that last image you shared! Such important stuff to keep in mind.

Honestly, your blog is one of my favorites to read every day. I love the day-in the life type posts but also really like how you usually have a topic to discuss each day. Like tips for tempo runs, how to up your mental race game, how to find balance with healthy eating, etc. So I guess I’d say, just keep doing what you’re doing! And I hope you blog for the next 20 years too :-) Definitely interested to hear about how you juggle everything once the new little one is here! My fiance and I are getting married next year and want kids not too long after that, so I’m trying to accumulate some tips before then!

Reply

Diana, thank you for your sweet words… that means the world to me! AHHHHH CONGRATS on your marriage next year! You are going to have to keep me updated on everything! I’ll want to see pics of the wedding too if that’s not too creepy of me to ask haha! Have a beautiful day!

Reply

Haha not creepy! I’m sure I’ll be wanting to show our pictures to the whole world anyway! So I will definitely keep you posted!

I like blogs that show the positive and the downsides of life without whining endlessly. I am a little suspicious of someone who is all rainbows all the time. I tend to look for healthier bloggers who aren’t preachy about it and those that have humor tossed in. (life can be a pain in the butt, it can be absurd, and it can be full of joy – often in the same day or week).

I read cutting the bottom of the pumpkin makes it easier to clean the goo out. I usually just draw on mine. :)

Reply

HEY NINA!!! I totally agree with you on what you look for in blogs.. I am the same way about the blogs I read! Okay, that is brilliant to cut out the bottom. We are going to have to try that asap! Brooke is excited to come home from school today and draw on the rest of hers:) I hope your day is a great one and I LOVE hearing from you!

Reply

Loved the BYU video. I watched it several times and wanted to dance in my seat at work. Did you brother-in-law train the mascot that did the jump and broke the concrete block? That was a good video and such talent in that mascot. It doesn’t look easy doing those moves in costume.
I also loved that quote by President Hinckley. I think I need to tape that to our fridge. Every word of it is true.

Reply

Forgot to add to my comment that I love This Is Us. Last weeks episode was by far the best. The conversation between Kate and her mom was good and when the fiance told Rebecca that he’s Team Kate was a good scene. Another good one I started is The Good Doctor. I hope this one makes it to season 2.

Congrats on your blog-versary, Janae! Just when you think you get in a groove (aka with your blogging schedule) life changes, right?! I’m currently sitting here with my baby asleep on my chest catching up on blog reading before getting started on some freelance work. It can be challenging to get work done with a young baby, but I wouldn’t have it any other way… these baby snuggles won’t last forever :). I can’t wait to hear about what works for you guys with your new addition!

As for blog topics, my favourites are life posts, especially the ups and downs that others face and how they handle them. When blogging and social media really took hold, it seemed strange to share and follow what strangers were up to. However, blogging and social media has created such a great community that makes me feel like we’re “in it together,” whether it’s motherhood, running, or just life in general !

Reply

HEY GIRL!!! Thank you so much! Hahaha yep, life has a way of doing that too us! Congrats on your new little one and I hope your freelance work is going great day! Isn’t it amazing the community that we are able to have online… in whatever topic we are needing at the time. It’s really incredible. I agree completely with you! I hope you are having a great day Brittany!

I finally started watching This Is Us! I’m catching up on last season online so last night I confused the heck out of my pets by full-on ugly crying while sitting in bed watching my laptop.

Reply

BAHAHAH you are not alone with the full-on ugly cry while watching This Is Us! That is why I watch it alone on my treadmill now;) The second season I’m not crying as much as the first though! Keep enjoying:)

Reply

I came across your blog about a year ago and I love it. Just wondering – is here somewhere to go back and ready past posts (I love reading past posts on blogs to just get some background info and stuff like that) – like a table of contents, I guess?
This Is Us is awesome! That is probably about the only show I will watch “live” and with no electronic distractions.

Reply

Oh I am totally the same way as you!!! I love to read the past blog posts! So when I had my blog redone they took out that option to go back by month so I’m trying to figure out how to add that again… SORRY! Here is my first blog post ever though:

I wish we could watch This Is Us all together!

Have a wonderful day Meredith!

Haha! Andrew’s face in that picture! He looks thrilled! LOL!
I LOVE randomness in blogs…I love to see what your doing in your day but also get nutrition/fitness/anything advice.
That’s why I love your blog so much! Congrats on your blogversary!

Reply

Thanks so much Bridgette! HAHAH yeah… mornings are a little rougher for Andrew… plus I woke up him up at 4 a.m. I hope you are having a beautiful day girl!

I agree with another commenter — your posts always make me want to shop at Costco! In SF though the parking is kind of unbearable so I tend to go to Trader Joe’s instead.

You have a great combination of running info, life stories, and broad topics. I started my blog to journal training for my first marathon but I found it almost like my personal diary that I was letting people into. That’s what I like about yours too — it’s not too technical but it also teaches me things. Plus you give me lots of ideas for things to do with my kids ;)

Congrats on nearly 7 years of blogging!! Here’s to 70 more!!

Reply

OH i can’t even imagine how tough it would be to park at the costco in SF. I am jealous of a close TJ’s though! Oh thank you so much for what you said. Isn’t it nice to have a personal diary, I forget about everything that happens ha so it is nice to be able to look back! Have a beautiful day Christina and many of your 10 words that you will never spell correctly the first time are hard for me too! You are not alone!

Costco pumpkins for the win!! Our Costco is 2+ hours away, but we still got our pumpkin there. The kiddo wants to carve it, but I worry that it will freeze and start rotting, so I am holding out on her ;)

That schedule thing…always exciting to see how it plays out :)

Reply

TWO HOURS AWAY!?!? NOOOOO!!! I’m glad you still get your pumpkins there though! Yeah, I think ours will definitely rot before Halloween ha… we should have held out too! I hope you are having a great Thursday morning Leeann!

I read a variety of blogs from people of all ages. I don’t mind when someone writes about a tough time, it’s such a normal part of life, I want to cheer them on as they keep on going! I could definitely do a highlight reel right now, since Les is happily cycling his way across the country, but reality is on the home front we have a tree that got knock down by wind on Monday and my water heater pilot light went out yesterday! That’s called life :)

LEE IS CYCLING ACROSS THE COUNTRY right now!??! That is incredible! Huge bummer about the tree and water heater pilot though! I always love chatting with you Kathy!

I’ve been using This Is Us as a reward for finishing my mid-week middle distance runs (8 weeks to go til my first marathon in five years!).

By the way, random thought… I’ve been a casual follower of your blog page on FB the past couple years but due to its algorithms, didn’t see your posts super often. But it just so happened that I’ve now moved to Utah and I’m seeing you pop up in my feed a lot more often! (p.s. any running groups in the area you can recommend? I need some running buddies.) Also, if you ever did a meet-up run/event for fellow fangirls in the area, I think that’d be cool!

HEY ASHLEY!!! Yay for moving to Utah:) What part are you in?! I WOULD LOVE to do a meet-up run! That would be a blast!

I enjoy reading blogs because I get to learn about so many different topics. I love traveling and because of several bloggers (including you) writing about where they live, I have traveled to several different states, the last one being 2 weeks ago when I went on a road trip from L.A. to Utah. Your descriptions of Utah are on point, beautiful state!

I started my blog when I was 24. I am only 27 now so only a few years for me. I hope I am still blogging into my 30s. I still haven’t figured out sponsored posts and freelance stuff but that’s what I love about blogging is that it is the perfect creative outlet for me and there is always something new to learn. I wish I had started a blog earlier. I used to write daily in college like a 1,000 words a day just about what I did that day and my thoughts. I would write about my crazy family stories too. I still have hopes to turn that into a future book about my life. I dreamed of going on the Oprah show with my book and I was so sad when she ended her show but she does have a network now so I guess my chances of meeting up with Oprah could still happen.

I was just talking to my mom this morning about how social media is a highlight reel. I’ve decided to take a “break” because i find myself in the comparison trap and taking a step back always helps.
I always love reading about your kids, relationship (vlogs), and basically anything you write about!

Thanks for putting that quote up. It’s one of my favorites!

I can honestly say, yours is the only blog I have stuck with regularly after reading an article years ago about “women running blogs you must read.” :) Maybe part of it is that we live in the same general area so I love recognizing spots and races in your pics. But mostly, I like that you’re positive, even when things get tough. I’m not someone who needs to read sugar-coated content, BUT I will say that I’ve loved seeing you navigate your ups and downs with a “bright side” approach. It’s been inspiring. Thanks Janae!

I love all your posts! It’s fun to hear about your daily life, because it makes you so relatable! Just another mom going for her daily runs and driving kids around! Chaos and all! Thanks for being open with your readers, and for the post marathon encouragement. It meant more than you know ?
