Let’s Talk About Healthy Minds, Bodies & Souls + The Most Amazing Giveaway (worth $1,799)!!!

Good morning everyone!  I hope you woke up feeling refreshed and ready to take on your day.  Today we are talking about something that is a part of life for EVERY SINGLE ONE of us—>  SLEEP!  I want to share with you about how important sleep is for our health and wellness!  This post is sponsored by Sleep Number® and they have an INCREDIBLE giveaway for you today (I’m talking incredible!!!) so don’t forget to enter at the end of this post!

—————————————————————————–

I think sleep is kind of a funny thing.  The other night I woke up to Andrew snapping his fingers while he was asleep.  I think he was having a dream about Beretta because he snaps his fingers at her when he wants her to do something.  I snore, always have and I don’t know how to stop.  I have a brother that used to sleep RUN occasionally from the ages of 5-9.  He would be sleep running through the house and my dad would have to catch him.  He even went out the front door one night during his sleep run.  When I was a little girl and didn’t fall asleep at the exact time that I wanted to for school the next day I would cry to my parents.  I was so stressed that I would not wake up on time for class and get a tardy (I was quite the punctual student;).  Each night our kids fall asleep holding on to a toy or crayon, sharing the bed with the dog or with 2 of their 4 limbs hanging off of the bed.  Some nights I can’t remember any of my dreams and other nights I wake up thinking that whatever happened in my dreams must have actually happened in real life (sorry, Andrew about being mad occasionally over what happened in my dreams).  Whenever Brooke wakes up and I ask her what she dreamed about, she replies “Mama” in her most sweet voice (because she knows exactly how to butter me up for the day;)  While sleep can be kind of strange and so unique for each of us, sleep is so important for every single one of us!

I think that a lot of times we focus our health efforts mainly on our nutrition and physical activity but we cannot forget the huge role that sleep plays on overall health & wellness!  I think sleep is something that we can all make improvements with including putting our to-do lists away when we should be resting our bodies from all of the running, playing and working all day long.

Here are a few common side effects for me when I am not sleeping well (aka after my divorce for a while or when I was having all of those gut issues or when I’ve been stressed out about family things):

*My mile splits aren’t what I want them to be, I have a harder time finishing workouts and goodness gracious race day does not go well if I have not been sleeping well.

*I make poor eating choices.  When I am tired, I reach for sugar all day long hoping that it will give me the energy I am missing from not sleeping well.

*I have lower motivation with work, with taking care of the house, with getting things DONE.

*It’s hard for me to focus on things.  I feel like my brain is everywhere except for where I want it to be in the moment.

*Overall, when I am not sleeping well or making sleep a priority I just feel like I’m not tapping into my potential as a wife/mom/runner/daughter/blogger/sister etc. and I don’t like that feeling at all.

Turns out that when I’m not sleeping well, SO many things in my life are effected negatively.

When I am sleeping well, it feels like life just goes so much more smoothly.  My overall perspective about life is better and I eat a lot better.  I notice progress in my running and I can focus on my work.  I’m a much better wife and mom (just ask Andrew and the kids;).  The positive things that come from sleeping well are definitely the best motivation to make sure that I take care of myself, my health and go to bed at a good time.  Time for us all to make sure that we are sleeping better!

I kind of tricked Andrew when we were dating.  I was all about staying up late with him and watching movies or talking until way too late.  And then a little bit into marriage, he realized that sleep means a lot to me.  I look forward to it, I want to be in my bed for as many hours as possible and anytime that I can get in bed early, I do.  Since I first met Andrew, he has gotten a lot better at getting in bed at a good time and making more time for sleeping BUT our old mattress was killing his back.  We were using my old one and I would wake up in the mornings some days with him sleeping on the floor because the mattress hurt his back so bad.  For a few years I was single and all I had to worry about was how the mattress worked for me (and for Brooke when she would climb into my bed each morning).  We got married and all of the sudden I needed a mattress that was perfect for TWO people!  Between Andrew’s back killing him and the fact that I’m always game for finding more ways to have a better night’s sleep, we were so excited to try Sleep Number!

Great sleep starts with your mattress.  We went to the Sleep Number store and had an awesome experience there!  We brought the kids and my mom.  The team members there were so friendly and helpful! They helped us to really personalize what we needed and what would be the best solution for Andrew’s back problems along with our desire for two very different mattresses.  I prefer a softer mattress and Andrew prefers a more firm mattress.  I think that this has to be my favorite part about our Sleep Number mattress, it is a win-win situation for the two of us.  Neither of us has to settle on one type of mattress, we both get what we love!

DSC02851

It is so easy to adjust each side of our Sleep Number mattress.  You can use the bed remote or your phone to get to the exact Sleep Number® setting that is perfect for you (I am at a 35 and Andrew is usually around 60 or more and you can choose anywhere from 5-100)!   I am SO comfortable on my side at 35… it feels like I get to have my mattress exactly where my body is it’s happiest.

DSC02865

We are learning A LOT about our sleep with our Sleep Number mattress.  Through the SleepIQ™ technology I get to see exactly how well I sleep each night.  The information that is gathered from the mattress is shown on an app on my phone and it tells me when the best hours of sleep are for me, how many breaths per minute I take, when I am restless and restful and even my average heart rate while I am asleep.  Having all of this information and seeing where I can improve has provided a way for me to challenge myself to get a better night of sleep each night.  Also, Sleep Number mattresses actually adjust to better fit to your own personal needs which I am excited to see how that continues to help me to sleep better!

DSC02889

Andrew has been loving adjusting his side of the bed to meet his needs and to make his back happier.  Hallelujah for no more floor sleeping, right Andrew?

DSC03018

Overall, we are loving our Sleep Number mattress and we are really happy to have such a great solution for the two of us.  Now we each get a good night of sleep while sleeping on the same mattress.. it is wonderful:)

DSC02896

Sleep is so important for everyone but remember, as runners we really have to make sure we are getting enough sleep each night if we want to continue to train hard and recover well!  “It’s during the third and fourth stages of a typical sleep cycle when a body heals itself.  That’s when the human growth hormone (HGH) is released from the pituitary gland.  Although it’s gotten notoriety as a performance-enhancing drug, in its natural form it plays a key role in building and repairing muscle tissue and bones, as well as acting as a catalyst for the body to use fat as fuel.  Without the right amount of HGH in the blood, recovery from workouts is hindered, prolonging the time it takes the body to build a strong aerobic engine.” (source)  Don’t let your lack of sleep get in the way of recovering from your workouts!

Parkway Place store in Huntsville, AL is the closest store to me and my husband and I have been talking about getting a new mattress and can’t make a decision – it’s so hard to choose! And I like something softer and he likes more firm, he’s a back sleeper, I’m on my side, he snores and I have neck problems so there are lots of things to consider!

This is awesome, thank you!! It’s been difficult to get a decent amount of sleep since I’ve had this nerve pain even after multiple treatments. There is no comfortable position and sometimes there are electric shocks, poking sensations waking me. My side of the bed is filled with lots of pillows while my fiancé snores even though he politely declines. You know, the fun and adventures we have, right? The closest store we have is the Old Orchard Mall in Skokie.

Reply

The closest store is either the Ridgedale Mall or Eden Prairie location. We are currently using a hand me down mattress that is quite worn. We joke we both sleep in our separate wholes and fight over the middle peak! Our backs feel the effects of that for sure so this bed would be a blessing!!

We are in dire need of a new mattress! I have chronic insomnia which is caused in part by our mattress. It is uncomfortable and not supportive. I have hip issues (darn you, old age) and the mattress does not help my condition. Also, there is a big “hump” in the middle, so if my husband and I want to meet in the middle, the hump makes us each roll to our respective sides. LOL Help save my sleep, hips and marriage with a Sleep Number bed! :)

I work over 80 hrs a week, but I still have a hard time falling asleep when I work night shifts. The closest store is just 10 miles away! And, oh, where do I begin with sleep issues? I’ve struggled with sleep for most of my life! It takes me at least an hour to fall asleep at night and I have become a very light sleeper, so I wake up often. I’ve never invested in a nice mattress, so it really does make me wonder if that has been a big contributor to the problem!

My sleep issues are not being able to sleep in like I used to – even though my son would totally let me on the weekends – but my back starts to hurt, darn it! I just thought maybe it’s bc I was getting older, but maybe it’s my mattress.

Reply

My closest one is the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. I like a firm mattress but the hubby likes a softer one so this would allow us to have our own option but stay together.

Reply

The store closest to me is in LAFAYETTE LA. I have 6 discs that are injured and I can sleep only on on my sides. I toss back and forth all night long. I wake up feeling tired. I haven’t been able to sleep in a bed in years, because of the firmness (I did sleep a few nights in hotel bed and was shocked, but it did take a lot of pillows to make it possible). I would love to be able to adjust the firmness.

Glendale, California Store! I’m moving in with my SO (AGHH!!!!) and we are thriving on a college budget. This would help us out more than you could ever imagine. Seriously, we need this. Reply

The Galleria at South bay in Redondo Beach! Why would I want a new mattress? Because I love sleeping! And I think my mattress is way past retirement, aggravating my lower back issues, and preventing me from a good night sleep, and my daily life. Ok, ok, even if I don’t win this I’m definitely getting a new mattress SOON but how cool would it be if I won? Pretty cool, I think!

Davenport, IA. I would love to win because I really don’t know why I don’t sleep well. But I did change pillows to the bamboo ones and that helped. So maybe changing to a bed that’s not the el cheapo would help too. My husband and I like completely opposite beds. I like soft, he likes firm. So, this could be a happy fix.

Reply

The Penn Square store in the Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City is closest to me.
Hubby and I have drastically different ideas of what makes a good mattress. He likes them cloud soft and fluffy and I like them super firm. Right now, we have a firm bed, which gives me great sleep if I’m alone in the bed. Since I’m usually not, Hubby tosses and turns and I end up getting horrible sleep because he isn’t sleeping. The whole thing is a mess and we’re looking at various options to try and make us both happy. Winning this would be a dream come true.

Oh gosh! The chance to win a mattress?!? How awesome! I would love to win because my current mattress is 10 years old and there are mornings I wake up so stiff. It’s one of those things that just gets put off until you have the time and money to spend. Isn’t it crazy how we sacrifice something as important as sleep and our bodies for other things other than looking for a new mattress? :) The closest store to me is Hanes Mall Store in Winston-Salem, NC. Enjoy your weekend and am happy to hear you and Andrew are now sleeping soundly together!

Reply

The closest Sleep Number store to us is in Grand Junction, Colorado (we live in Basalt, CO). My boyfriend and I (we’ve lived together for 5 years now, and have moved across the country together) both work at a non-profit and therefore do not have a whole lot of money to spend on things like a new mattress. We both are super active (my boyfriend a road bike racer and me a marathoner) and have noticed some aches and pains from sleeping recently. Specifically, I keep waking up with some horrible psoas soreness in my lower back. It’s partially from sitting at a desk all day after running, but also partially from our mattress and the way it slopes and sinks. If we won this contest, we would be ECSTATIC! We’ve been wanting a new (quality!) mattress for quite a while now.

And I also ‘tricked’ my person early on when we first started hanging out into thinking I could hang out late at night ;)

The Galleria at South Bay is closest to me :) since having a baby, when I wake up at night (for whatever reason) I find it super hard to fall back asleep. Sometimes its because the baby is cuddling in our bed too, in which case a nice big bed would solve the problem. Plus anything comfier and more supportive couldn’t hurt either. Thanks for the give away! fingers crossed :)

Hillsboro, Or Tanasbourne is the closest store to me.
I have been and insomniac for years and since I have never cared too much about mattresses before I never realized how much of a difference a firm vs. soft mattress matters. My Handsome Man always wants to feel like he is sleeping on a cloud, while I like a firm mattress to help with aches and pains of my back that come with my job. I would love a chance to win this mattress and finally attempt to get some sleep!

Arden fair mall, Sacramento!
When my husband and I got married we used/still use his old mattress. It still has the indent in the middle from him, that I always roll into. Lol. 5 years of marriage and 2 kids later, I think it’s time for a new mattress!

My closest store is on Lenox Road in Atlanta. My sleep issues are throbbing pain in my lower back–probably doesn’t help that our mattress dips in the middle (we like to call it forced cuddling). Would love to wake up in the morning and not feel 20 years older than my age!

The closest Sleep Number store is in my home town in FL. My sleep problems are numerous insomnia, achey joints etc, but my husband also has back problems so winning a new mattress would be awesome for both of us! He has to have surgery later this summer and it would be nice to start out fresh with a repaired back and a new mattress. I hope I win!

Burnsville Center Store!

I have never hoped to win a contest more. My husband has restless legs and needs a very firm mattress. I, only the other hand need a soft one for my hips. A couple of years ago we got a new King mattress–hoping to give him more room to thrash and that I hopefully won’t be woken by it. But, it is far too firm for me and not only does his thrashing keep me up but my hips ache too. I love really love to win this and maybe get some sleep for a change! Fingers crossed

My closest SleepNumber store is in West Market Plaza in Akron, Ohio. I need a new mattress because of your exact situation – my husband and I just got married on Sunday, and WOW our mattress is not working for us! We’ve been looking at a few stores already, but how amazing would it be to win a mattress for a wedding present?! lol :) We just need something that will suit both of us, not just one of us. Either I’ll struggle on his bed/mattress or he’ll struggle on mine. We need a solution ASAP! Thanks as always for great content on your blog – I check it every day!

My sleep issues, where do I start. I have two dogs plus my husband who all sleep on a queen sized bed. My big dog sleeps by my feet and the puppy stays close to my head. I have been waking up the with the worst back pain, cramped legs and stiff neck every day for the last 6 months. It doesn’t help that my mattress is worn and we are definitely in need of a new one for sure.
