Just frolicking through the meadows.
My mom picked me and the girls up and then dropped me off in the canyon so that I could get some nice ups and downs uninterrupted from the cars and stoplights and then run to her house. Yes, I scored the best mom.
PS Curly loves to make all sorts of faces whenever I pull out the camera.
And my niece snapped a pic as they were driving by. I actually dressed perfectly for this run… I was never too cold or too hot. It was a miracle.
At the halfway point I stopped at the water fountain to eat my gel and to stretch out my IT Bands… They have their ups and downs and right now they are a tiny bit cranky. Half marathon training is a lot different for me vs marathon training (fueling while running is one of my biggest weaknesses when it comes to marathons) and I don’t take gus nearly as much. Twelve miles and over I always take something with me and sometimes for 10 milers but other than that, I tend to eat 45-60 minutes before I leave and pretty quickly after I get home.
You would think I would get all of the fingerprints off of the screen before taking a picture but I didn’t. The goal was 14 miles @ 7:29 average pace so I was happy with a 7:27. I think that one of the greatest things about doing our long run on the weekend is that we are doing them on tired legs…. a week of miles, speed, tempo, strength training. So on race day our legs are used to running long on tired legs but instead they are refreshed from the taper = speedy race times because we are used to starting off our long runs with tired legs!!
I tried a little something new before my run because the girls were eating Golden Grahams for bfast. I had a little bowl myself with my banana and water and my stomach actually handled it great.
After foam rolling I put together a quick salad (fruit on salad is one of my favorites) and an apple with a pb pack.
And then we went for our holiday tradition. For most of the holidays we go for holiday themed donuts but they were all out (of the holiday ones AND apple fritters…) yesterday so we got a bunny sugar cookies instead.
We ate a lot of bunny shaped items yesterday…
We then attended a kid’s Easter party in downtown Provo and Brooke pulled out her Watch Me Whip/Nae Nae moves during the dance party.
And she got her face painted like a bunny which was a highlight.
What else would two single girls (and a 3 year old) do on a Saturday night? Target.
And then we got busy with the Easter eggs. We use crayons/stickers instead of the dye because I end up getting that stuff everywhere.
Have a long run yesterday? How did it go?
Bringing fuel… when do you bring some with you and when do you start taking in fuel?
Three things you have going on today??
Long run for me is today – mostly because it is going to be warm out today! Yay!
I don’t start with gels until after I pass the 10K point – usually at 15K
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes
Happy Easter! No long run this week, which was a bit of a disappointment but makes me eager for my run next week. Yesterday I did hike 8 miles in the mountains which always has the same feeling as a long run.
I start bringing fuel at 12 miles but I’m trying to train low over the next couple months and only take fuel over 16 miles.
No long run this weekend. My legs were feeling more tired than usual yesterday after a busy week so I decided to just do an easy 4 miles instead. Got to love the freedom of not race training!
I start bringing fuel when I’m running more than 8 miles (because that takes me more than 60 minutes).
mary @ minutes per mile
love golden grahams! only 1 step behind my all-time favorite: cinnamon toast crunch. for a 1/2 (race) i take a gel around mile 7. when training i usually don’t take gels unless i’m running 14+ miles.
Sally @ sweat out the small stuff
I plan on running today 8 miles. I bring fuel only for over 10 mile runs.
No long run for me yesterday……..I do my long runs on Wednesdays (I’m off).
I bring fuel for anything more than 10 miles. I usually run after work because I am NOT a morning person. However, if we are on vacation I don’t mind getting up early to run in a new place! If I am doing a ten miler early morning I usually take fuel but I don’t always need to eat it. And I carry 2 fuels for half marathons, and 3 for full marathons……….I don’t always eat them all, but I like knowing I have them.
3 things………..a run, cleaning lots of rocks for work, and breakfast for dinner!
Got through my 20 miler yesterday so I’m pretty happy the rest of the weekend! Just finished my breakfast today after a very slow recovery run and now I have to motivate to do something besides run/eat :) Maybe more eating.
Sarah @ SarahRuns26
I’m in New Mexico for the weekend and it snowed yesterday so I got to take a nap in the middle of the day. It was great! Today is going to involve a lot of driving? Spending time with the family and hopefully another nap.
Fueling on long runs took a long time for me to get down. I usually have something with me if it is 10-12 miles or longer but anything shorter than that and I’m usually good. Even the 10-12 mile runs I don’t always have to use fuel for. Definitely depends on the day.
I start stashing trail mix in a pocket or hand bottle when I’m going around 10 miles. 15-20 I add something more substantial like a Clif Bar or granola bar. Anything further depends on my ability to refill and/or carry my hydration pack. I’ll throw in some gels for good measure on really long runs, some with caffeine for that extra boost.
3 things….helping my brother move into his new house, do a couple extra couch lifts so I can consider it strength-training, & enjoy Easter with some family

Happy Easter! I’m taking a nice day off from everything today and just celebrating life. Okay, and pancakes too!
I refuel early and often, like after 5 miles, while I am training. Then on my last race (RnR DC half on March 12th), I refueled after the 6 miles mark and then again at mile 10 and I felt great
I’ve never had a long enough race that I really had to fuel for. I did take a banana with me when I was training for one, but my husband got injured and we never ended up going.
We had a family Easter egg hunt yesterday and painted eggs. Today we have the other side lunch and pie (I wanted the pie so I made it to bring) and another hunt.
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine
Happy Easter! I don’t have any long races coming up any time soon so I just did 8 miles yesterday, but I did a fast finish to help get me ready for a 10k I am running in a few weeks. I usually take fuel if I run more than 10 miles.
Today I’ll be going to my parent’s house to celebrate Easter…also lots of relaxing and catching up on blogs!
Meredith @ the cookie chrunicles
My long run was yesterday (14 miles). I always take a hammer gel with me for runs over 10 miles but I rarely finish one full packet
Happy Easter to you & Brooke & your family!
Hey Janae! I have some unsolicited advice for you :) My IT was giving me serious trouble this marathon cycle and I had huge success with dry needling and using the R8
It’s SO much easier than a foam roller or stick (both of which I have). I have zero affiliations with the company, it’s just that good. And it’s super comfortable to use because you can sit up while rolling out. Just a thought!
Ran 13 miles yesterday and felt great despite getting maybe 2 hours of sleep Friday night. I always bring along the Clif Shot Bloks for anything more than 9 miles … I love all the flavors!
Three things I got going on today: MAYBE going to the pool to swim some laps (definitely not running today) … Taking my pup to the dog park because it’s gorgeous outside … Cookie baking!
20 miler yesterday for Boston. Went better than I dared hope. I get hungry fast so two blocks every two or three miles starting at mile 3 including two stretch stops at the same fountain. I can never run past it without stopping and drinking. :)
Easter, church, family
Happy Easter Janae. It sounds like your run went well and it’s pretty awesome they snapped the photos of you. I’m actually glad I’m not doing a marathon soon because it seems like a ton of people are gearing up with their longest runs today.
I did a workout this morning which felt pretty good.

Happy Easter Janae, have a wonderful day with your family.
You made me crave Golden Grahams with this post, those are my weakness!
hehe I remember I took gu twice during my first trail 10k. The hills were brutual at Quiksilver in Almaden/San Jose area. Looking back I would just avoid the hills.. the gu didn’t help.
I think I will refuel around the 6-8 mile range of the half. We shall see.
Today I am running 3-4 miles on the very very flat part of the los gatos trail in campbell.
What stretches do you do for your IT band?
Your beautiful running pictures make my heart happy. They remind me that spring will come here too very soon ;-) I did my 14 miler this morning. I bring PowerGels for any run longer than a 10 miler (my pre-run banana is enough for less than that). I take half of it around mile 5 than I take another half every 3 miles after that. I was so happy to be reunited with my salty treats this morning (after lent!) and plan to enjoy them all day long ;-)
Happy Easter to you and your family!! And thank you for that video it is sooo beautiful! xoxo
Long run this morning – 9 miles. The last 2 were plagued by GI distress :( and all I had was a GU!
Big day today with Easter services. My husband is playing “My Tribute” (To God be the Glory) on his trumpet.
I Ran about 14 yesterday, but I actually don’t bring anything but water on my runs! Have you heard of being fat-adapted? Apparently after you train your body to use fat as your fuel it’s a cleaner source of energy!
I’d did a measly 4+ yesterday but I’m practicing for a speed test in mid May so distance will come later.
I’m religious about training as I ‘fight’ so I do Gu for anything more than 40 minutes or so. The more Gu you do the better set you are for race day.
Michelle @ Run4Life
Long run for me was 20 miles at the Eastern States race – from Maine through New Hampshire to Massachusetts. It was a bucket list race for me, and I had a blast!
Fueling for me is a work in progress. I use Hammer products right now, and typically start with 2 Endurolytes (electrolyte tabs) and then use gels every 6 miles, with another 2 Endurolytes at 12 miles. I love the Apple Cinnamon flavor – it tastes just like applesauce and goes down easy :-)
Happy Easter to you and Brooke and your family.
I went to a beautiful waterfront Sonrise church service along the water followed by a large Baptism service in the bay. Came home and hosted a delicious Easter brunch. Then I played with my puppies and lounged in hammocks. What a wonderful Easter Sunday.
I did my long run yesterday and it felt amazing! I was rested and the weather was a little chilly, but perfect. I did 8 very hilly miles! I am training for a half and have just started bringing along some chews and a Nathan bottle to hydrate. Awesome run!
Happy Easter! I am glad to see you are enjoying your weekend :)
I usually take fuel if I’m going to be running for more than 45 minutes and I’ll take it every 45 minutes to an hour throughout the run.
Grocery shopping, Laundry, and Hart of Dixie (my current Netflix favorite)! We celebrated our Easter yesterday and I took my nephews some Easter baskets today.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Fuelling on long runs is new to me as I’m gearing up for my first marathon in 14 weeks. So it’s awesome reading everyone’s advice! I have to get a good fuel belt first so I can carry water and any extras. I love sticking with as close to natural fuel options as possible so in the past have stuck with coconut water, and dates for refuelling but think I need to step it up now.
Three things going on today; going to exchange my new kindle because the basic model doesn’t come with a backlight (seems crazy!!), reading my new marathon nutrition program from Strength Running and cooking an outside BBQ weber for dinner with some lovely red wine from a local winery.
Tedi @ running with infertility
My “long run” consisted of working a 12 hour day at comic con. The highlight was I got to see Matt Smith from Doctor Who. I also took quite a few pictures of cool characters! Love it!
I think I have a fueling problem because I start fueling at mile 3-4 on any given long run.
I took a nap, went to church and had dinner with the in-laws.
I’m with you- I generally fuel if my run is 7 or more miles, and I will take a gu at mi 4. If I’m going 10 miles or more, I’ll take another at mi 7-8, and so on.
Tedi @ Running With Infertility
Yes! I gu every 3 miles at least. At least I’m not the only one! :)
I take fuel based on time, not distance. I take it starting at 45 minutes and then every 45min-1hour after that.
Victoria @ Minus Thirty Three
Happy Easter to you and Brooke and the family :)
When you’re done half-marathon training (or should I say when you’re taking a small break before your NEXT race), you should totally try a Crossfit class!!! I’m sure you’ve heard it before but it does wonders to running :)
No long run really for me this weekend (was supposed to do a half marathon as part of marathon training) because my IT bands wanted me to die after last weekend’s 16 miler and I’ve been trying to convince them that they like running ever since. The most I’ve been able to do without tightness is 8 miles (after a week of massaging the crapppp out of them and resting a bit from running)… Do you have any advice for IT band crankiness? I’ve had this issue for my whole marathon training cycle so far and I’ve tried so many things with inconsistent relief… I still have a 18 and 20 miler to complete before the taper in 6 weeks…
Happy Easter to you and Brooke!!
Colleen @ CSmith Run
Yup I did 15 on Saturday!! I didn’t even consider bringing fuel until I got home and I was like hmm yeah I should’ve done that. I need to be better at it too!
Samantha @ believeandrun
I did not have a super long run on Saturday – 5.5 miles (was supposed to be 7, but did not plan accordingly for the day)
I am a big fan of honey stinger products – waffles and gummies. Something about the fructose of honey rather than glucose really works for me – about 40 minutes in I take something because I can feel myself getting heavy and struggle through mile 4.
Happy Easter to you both! Looked like you all had a great weekend! After I have my baby, can’t wait to run another half! They are my favorite! I’ll have to try the training plan you are using.
Anything over 4 miles and i bring a gel, but thats because i run slow so 4 miles is around an hour for me. Anything over that and i need fuel.
Brooke as a bunny is too cute!
