How we say our goodbyes and SEVEN continents!

We are off to San Diego today (any food recommendations.. please tell me in the comments) and so we made sure to say goodbye to Gilbert in the best way possible—> by eating more of their delicious food and posing with the side wall of a store.

Joyride Taco House is a must if you are ever in the area.  We heard it would be super busy so we went for a late lunch and we were starving by the time the chips and salsa arrived… demolished it.

IMG 4567

I decided I had to go with the tacos and had the chicken, carnitas and fish.  The fish was the best one and the cucumber and orange salad was super fresh and I loved the citrus dressing!

IMG 4568

Do other people play the ‘name your top three treats that sound most delicious right now’ game?  Meg and I play this game pretty much any time we are at the gas station.  My top 3 yesterday were gummy bears, cookies n’ creme bars and twix bites.  I’m sure you wanted to know that information.

Megan chose Nibs????

IMG 4573

Some afternoon snacking.

IMG 4576

And then we braved the cold and went out with her mom and dad.  Thank goodness for those heat lamps.

IMG 4581

Sauce was on my MUST EAT list because of their tomato soup ad turkey salad.  I travel to eat.

Random question of the day… Yay or nay to these cherries?

IMG 4583

And my favorite necklace to wear while Brooke is away.

IMG 4562

Anybody see this?  Becca started running when she was 6 years old and has kept going with it ever since (45 marathons already—> 15 of those Boston!!).

My friend has a goal to run a marathon in every continent- I hope she can do it!

Reply

I’ve run a marathon in 28 states and one in Athens, Greece. Been to other countries, but that is the only one I’ve raced in.

We are having a pajama party for NYE. None of us were feeling like dressing up so we’re just going to hang out, have lots of snacks and enjoy the evening!

The Nearly Naked popcorn is the BEST!

Reply

that’s aweome! I want to do a race in all 50 states (not full marathons, but a registered race) and totally want to do a few overseas. You’re inspiring!

Reply

Thanks Cori! :)

Reply

My husband wants to run a marathon in every state. We have only done 5 so far so there is a long way to go…I think I would rather just try to do some sort of race in every state, that sounds a little more manageable:)

Reply

I’m working towards 50 states and also training for Paris marathon- definitely a bucket list race! I love racing in new places, such a fun way to travel! Have fun in SD and be sure to hit up old town!

Reply

I’ve never been to San Diego – have an awesome time! I haven’t run in all that many states – actually 5 now that I think of it which is more than I thought – each of my marathons was a different one.

Reply

That lady is crazy and insanely inspirational! If she can make it wok, I shouldn’t have any excuses to not train. This year I ran my first race in another country/continent- Denmark! In 2016 I’m doing a race in Canada which I’m excited about as well :)

Reply

I can’t remember any restaurants but Balboa Park in San Diego is so cool! There are a ton of museums and it is where the zoo is located!

Reply

So much fooood! I love it! I did my second marathon in Amsterdam with a group from Aspen that does a marathon in a different country every year! I wish I could do them all, but it was a lot of fundraising. Amsterdam was awesome and so was the race, but everyone was cheering for you in a language that you didn’t understand and the markers were in kilometers and I was too busy the whole time (running) to do any math! But it was such a great experience, I could definitely see you doing something like that!

Reply

YES to those cherries. Absolutely.

Your adventures seem so much fun!! I need to have more of those.

No plans for New Year’s Eve other than watching the college football playoff games. I doubt I’ll make it to midnight.

Reply

Yes to cherries

My plans for New Years eve is to eat food…..

I’ve only been to Sea World, the zoo and the midway museum. I actually really recommend the midway museum. I really liked it

Reply

Enjoy San Diego! I’ve only raced in three states, so running in all the states probably won’t be a goal of mine—although there are several destination races I’d like to do.

Reply

We used to live in San Diego and miss it terribly!! Our FAVORITE place was Hash House a Go Go.. To diiiiie for! Everything is incredible. Or go walk around Seaport Village, cute shops and bakeries, a carousel and plenty of restaurants to choose from. There’s a really cool splash pad and playground downtown at Waterfront Park – walking distance to downtown restaurants.

Reply

if you are up for tacos again Puesto in San Diego is AMAZING.

Reply

Have fun in San Diego! Board and Brew in Del Mar has THE BEST sandwiches I’ve ever had. Also, in Ocean Beach, the acai bowls at O.B. Smoothie are a must! I go out of my way for both these places every time I go back to visit!

Reply

Oh I forgot to mention if you want some burgers check out Slater 50/50, Public House, or Hodads. Have a great time!

Reply

I forgot .. Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy is a MUST!

Reply

It’s been over a year since I lived in San Diego, but miss it dearly. Definitely get some Mexican food. I’m good with just a taco shop, like El Indio or something fancy like Miguel’s in Hillcrest. Poway Sushi is THE BEST, but pricey. Fig Tree Cafe has excellent breakfast/brunches (which I feel is the greatest meal of any day). There is one in Hillcrest and in Pacific Beach. For local, healthy, yummy food, I always hit up True Food Kitchen in Fashion Valley Mall. I have so many more favorites too. There is a cool. Nomad Donuts (follow them on Instagram for their daily menu) has some great, unique donuts. And The Donut Bar downtown is super popular, but have never been. There is ALWAYS a crazy long line. North Park, Hillcrest and Mission Hills have amazing restaurants…especially Mission. Hills area (Brooklyn Girl is a fave too). Clearly, I love food. Enjoy your trip.

Reply

I think I’d like to do a race in every state. I’m not up for a marathon in each state, but I love finding a race when I travel. I’ve done races in 6 states so far!

Reply

I second Extraordinary Desserts! It’s fabulous.

Reply

Haha I travel to eat food that’s hilarious! You get a job as a goodie on the side!

Reply

Con Pane! We used to go there after long runs and I would destroy a sandwhich and cinnamon roll. Best food in San Diego. I can’t believe I haven’t been there yet this trip.

Reply

The Donut Bar downtown is awesome! They have awesome donuts and chocolate or strawberry milk “on tap”!

Con Pane in Liberty Station (near Point Loma) is a fantastic place for a sandwich. They make all of their breads and pastries. And everything tastes so fresh!!

Have fun!!

Reply

Breakfast: snooze AM eatery is by far the best breakfast place. They made me like and appreciate breakfast again as an adult! Burgers: Hodads in ocean beach! A must go to eclectic atmosphere and definitely good burgers. So much fun, my nephews loved it and it’s just a fun, chill place to go.

Reply

No to all cherries. New Years we will be at temple square seeing lights and freezing our butts off.

Reply

You’re having some yummy eats while away! I love trying new places to eat while traveling.
We aren’t much for going out on NYE so we will be having a game night in with my sister, her husband and my step son. We always make a nice dinner in too. This year it will be lasagna rolls UPS and salad. Have a great time in San Diego! I have visited there ands LOVE it!

Reply

Hi Janae, I’m in Encinitas, which is a beach town 30 minutes north of SD. If you can drive up, check out Roxy’s Restaurant on the 101 (giant salads and healthy, delicious options), VG’s Donuts (duh!), Blue Ribbon Pizza (duh!), Pannikin (coffee shop with light food options), Naked Cafe (also healthy, delicious options). Everything but Naked Cafe is on or right off of the 101, which is walking distance from the beach. You may want to drive up early and do a run then go eat. I like running from Solana Beach/Cardiff north into Encinitas and then back.

Reply

I’ve run two marathons in Oregon and two in NYC :) Half marathon in Red Rock canyon outside of Las Vegas. Half marathon in NJ too! Oh and a 10 miler in Big Sur California! I love trying to get a fun race in while traveling!

We’re making dinner at home for New Years and watching a movie! I cannot wait to be home in comfy clothes and relax!! :)

Reply

I do quite enjoy those cherries. I’ve never been to San Diego, or anywhere in California for that matter, but I would love to check it out someday!

Reply

San Diego is my happy place. Go checkout the Hotel del Coronado – it’s seriously beautiful. Little Italy, Gaslamp and Old Town all have great choices.

The husband gets chemo tomorrow. I’ll be partying on the couch with my dog. Pretty sure it will involve some champagne, naps and a movie. I’m a party animal… The next day we’ll have lunch with the in-laws.

Reply

Oh I love San Diego! If you want THE best stuffed french toast, you should check out Brian’s 24 downtown!!

Reply

For New Years, my boyfriend and I are inviting some people over to make pizza.

And I have only raced in two states, both of which I was living in at the time. Travel is just too expensive for me right now!

Reply

My friend and her husband have done a marathon in 47 or 48 states so far. I can’t keep up! She plans to finish in Hawaii in 2016. My favorite is when they did 5 marathons in 5 states in 5 days in 2015. You guys who run like crazy are machines!! :)

Yes to those cherries!

Have fun in SD!

Reply

Cafe 21 in Gaslamp, downtown San Diego – I went this weekend for DELICIOUS food, when I was visiting my in-laws. Salmon inside an omelet? YES!

Reply

I did 5 half marathons in 5 states in 5 days back in 2013. North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Nebraska. I couldn’t imagine 7 full marathons in 7 continents in 7 days though. Crazy!
The boyfriend and his daughters are picking me up this afternoon. We will be heading out to his moms house for a few days and ringing in the new year there. :)

Reply

I’m afraid I don’t know anything about those cherries and I haven’t been to San Diego since I was a child. We are going for a wedding in April though so I’ll be keeping an eye on everyone’s restaurant suggestions!

For NYE (my dumb brain keeps reading that New York Eve) the hubs and I are doing an evening 5k and then chillaxin. I don’t know if we’ll stay up until midnight. No matter what we do the kids will be up at 7!

Reply

I haven’t raced in many states, but I would LOVE to run an international marathon someday!

Yes to those cherries.

I don’t think we have New Years plans…I have a run at noon on New Years day with my running group though!

Reply

I would love to run a race in every state!

New Year’s Eve always feels so stressful to me. There’s all these expectations to have big plans but it’s usually 15 degrees outside and snowing, which makes dressing up AWFUL.

Reply

The cherries- NO!!
We ate at this out door restaurant in old town San Diego- it was amazing!!
New Years- at home with the fam & hubbys sister & fam. Snacks & games, and a big sleepover. Fun!

Reply

Fillippi’s Pizza Grotto in Little Italy is awesomesauce! Have fun!

Reply

I definitely think the best part of travelling is the eating part!! I’m usually very against thhose cherries, UNLESS it’s in a Shirley Temple. Then YES.

Reply

Loveeeee cherries!

Have fun in San Diego! I’ve only been to LA and would love to go at some point!

Reply

I live in SD! My neighborhood is Pacific Beach (the north end near La Jolla). If you are in this part of town, I recommend grabbing sandwiches at Board & Brew (they have the most AMAZING sauce that you’ll wanna drink/bathe in–I always get a turkey sando with avocado and plenty of sauce on the side to dump on each bite :) Then you can take a walk down Crystal Pier and get an stunning view of the coastline and all the surfer dudes/dudettes. Another few recs: Fig Tree Cafe, Trilogy (La Jolla), & acai bowls from Bowl of Heaven or the Mad Beet (or one of the million other places). Have a great time!!

Reply

My top 3 picks to eat for San Diego:
Hodad’s, but the one on Newport Ave.
South Beach bar and grille, also on Newport Ave. right next to the beach
Opera Café in Gaslamp! Best pesto gnocchi I’ve ever, ever had!!!! And the owner is super, super nice!!!!

Reply

Maraschino cherries are the best!

I can’t imagine doing the 7/7/7 marathon thing! Beyond running 7 marathons in 7 days…the travel schedule alone must be grueling!

I’m staying in on New Year’s with my family. The older I get, the more going out and dealing with crowds makes me want to hibernate at home. : )

Reply

The monte cristo sandwich at miltons!!! It is delicious and huge!! Have fun!

Reply

On the road to completing all the majors and continents. It will certainly take me longer than 7 days!!

main goal for New Year’s Eve is to stay awake until midnight.

Reply

When in SD you HAVE HAVE HAVE to go to Day and Night in Coronado – best breakfast, ever. Get there early is though because there’s not much seating and it can be crowded. Also great for ginormous burritos but the pancakes are my personal favorite. You can also get great Cali burritos at pretty much any hole-in-the wall mexican joint but they may come with, um, some GI distress haha

Reply

Don Kern, race director for Grand Rapids Marathon, is (I think) current record holder of 7 continents marathons…he didnit in something like 25 days. So if this lady can do it in 7 she will have blown away his record.

I bought Don’s book, still reading it, but it looks promising. He’s a pretty awesome dude from what I know and I was pleased to shake his hand at the end of my October marathon. (He shakes all finishers hands, which is pretty darn cool). Google him and buy his book if you so desire.

Reply

San Diego is my favorite city ever… Next to NYC of course.

If you find yourself in the Gaslamp/Little Italy area definitely check out Searsucker and Mariscos el Pulpo for fish tacos!

Reply

Hash House is great but if the line’s too long then go to The Tractor Room (it’s down the street and get the honey cornbread). VG Donuts – also great, but if that’s too far north then try Rose Donuts or Donut Star. Embargo Grill is good for a quick bite of cuban (the yucca is a must eat there). The Cravory for the best cookies of your life. Great Maple has a great breakfast/brunch. Mona Lisa has delicious (and giant) sandwiches-get it on focaccia! Punjabi Tandoor for the best Indian. Bare Back Grill and Hodads for burgers. Bud’s Louisiana Cafe for cajon/creole. Sab-e-lee for thai (penang curry and pad see ew are must eats). Let me know if you want more recs!! Obviously, I love to eat :)

Reply

Oh man … I kinda do the same thing at gas stations on RTs. My things usually are Red Vines, Cow Tales and Peach Rings.

Though you also kinda gotta like those gas station pink cookies.

But, that’s only if I’m traveling to run … lol!

ON the way to San Diego, if you drive thru Yuma there is a place called the Chile Pepper, it was voted best burrito by USA today last year (I think last year)..to die for simple to go Mexican food, and cheap. After that there used to be a place in Jacumba just before the mountains on the way to SD called Pit Stop that had amazing shakes. Have a blast…I love San Diego…meanwhile I will keep running on my treadmill here in extreme Northern Utah:). Could you maybe sneak in a few extra miles for me:)?

Reply

Ahhh have so much fun in SD! My brother just moved there and I’m so excited to go visit him! :) Also, I am now craving fish tacos (my faaaaave) and that salsa looks amazing.

xo

Reply

Nay to those cherries ;)!
If anybody could check out my blog it would be super amazing:

Love those cherries in tropical drinks but I’d never just eat them plain

Nye plans= going to my good friends house with my boyfriend and enjoying some homemade pizza and snacks/drinks! It will be a small low key party.

Reply

Holy crap. I didn’t even know there was a marathon in Antarctica. I can’t imagine doing that, simply because of all the logistics… getting to and from all the flights, hotels, and races must be more work than actually running!

The thing that made me drool the most on this post is that cucumber and orange salad… that sounds like such a good idea. I may need to create my own version.

Reply

I keep going back to that picture, too. Looks fresh and delicious!

Reply

Why are you in San Diego the ONE week I am not there. It’s not fair. Any way, for food recommendations, I highly encourage you to check out Pacific Beach Shop. It’s right on the coastline, with a beautiful view and you can customize your fish tacos based on fish, marinade, sauces, cheese, pretty much everything. You can grill them or fry them too! I’m not even huge into fish but this place is a big YES for me!

Reply

I haven’t yet raced in a bunch of different states. Keyword: YET! My plan is to do a full in each of the fifty states, and then venture overseas.

I have Florida and Oklahoma in the bag, and think Nevada will be next.

Reply

Harney Sushi in San Diego and Pacific Coast Grill in Cardiffe by the Sea (north of SD). It’s been a few years but I’m assuming it’s still there.

Reply

New Years Eve = Meeting with friends and if we are lucky, Taylor Swift sing along.
Last year myself and my speedy friend (he is going to the trials in the marathon!) had a great sing along to “Blank Space” and if we can get a duet for “Out of the Woods” going, my year will already be made :)

Reply

I know Becca! She trained me for my first marathon through Team in training! She is awesome and inspiring!!

Reply

Ya’lls booties are cute! Where are they from?

Reply

I’ve done 60 marathons, half were in the US and half in Canada. I would love to run one in Ireland, Australia or New Zealand some day. The Comrades ultra in South Africa is also on my bucket list.

I love those cherries :)

Reply

Go to Harbor Breakfast in SD if you’re around in the morning or afternoon! Amazing food and awesome environment.

Reply

I wasn’t even hungry when I started reading this post. Now I have a largish bowl of chips and salsa in front of me.

Reply

Hash House A Go-Go!!!!!!!

Reply

Each continent would be so awesome!

Cherries – They look a little questionable.

Reply

I don’t know if I will ever be one of those 50 staters, but I love the idea. Destination races are the best. I was supposed to run the Rome Marathon in April, but that is taking a back seat for now.

Reply

Low key with New Years Eve… Just gonna play some games with friends and see if I make it to midnight. ?

I’ve only been to San Diego once. So I have no idea. ?

Reply

Wow! Now that is a lot of running!! I like those cherries!! I love San Diego… I have family there and just visited a few weeks ago… I like to go have lunch in Coronado and take a walk on the beautiful beach and admire the gorgeous beach houses!! Have fun!

Reply

I live in San Diego and you couldn’t pick a better place for food! Donut Bar downtown is the absolute best for donuts and milk on tap. There is always a line and they always sell out by 11am or noon. Kona’s in Pacific Beach has the best breakfast burritos! Mad Beet has amazingggggg acai bowls (also in PB), Rocky’s in Crown Point for burgers, and The Patio on Lamont for brunch! The Fish Shop has to die for lobster tacos, or any kind of taco you could possibly want. Baked Bear or Cream for create your own ice cream sandwiches :) Have a great time and Happy New Year!

Reply

I have been waiting many months for that mama necklace to come back in!! I am so glad you posted about it and its back in stock!!

Reply

I just went to San Diego for my brother’s wedding in the San Diego temple. It’s such a beautiful temple!!
We ate at Miguel’s in old town San Diego and it was so good. Yummy tacos and the best fish tacos I’ve had and the yummiest jalapeño cheese sauce you eat with tortilla chips. So good!! I’ve heard that Hodad’s has amazing burgers but we didn’t try them.
You’ll have to go to Sprinkles cupcakes too. Those are my favorite cupcakes!

Reply

If you venture to Coronado, go to The Night and Day Cafe and Mootown Creamery. Neither will disappoint. Have fun!

Reply

No to those cherries!
Phil’s BBQ in San Diego is so yummy. I know beach town Bbq but it’s worth the line! There are so many good places it’s hard to make a bad choice. I’m not bias at all but there are so many great runs all over the city and county. I hope to see some great photos.

Reply

OB Noodle House! ?

Reply

I love San Diego! I don’t live there so can’t recall restaurant names but Gaslamp district was a fun girls trip and everything we ate was delicious there!

Reply

You’ve got to try the Lucha Libre Taco Shop! Their California burrito is amazing, who can say no to French fries in their burrito? More carbs please!

Reply

Gah! I really want your high top slip ons – where did you get them??

Reply

I am heading to San Diego in 2 weeks for the first time so I am happy to see all of these recommendations…thank you!

Reply

San Diego is my home and there are SO many great places to eat that you can’t really go wrong! Where are you staying? I live in N. County (Del Mar area) and we love Pizza Port in Solana Beach (if you are a beer drinker, this place is a must), Swami’s in Encinitas for breakfast/lunch, Naked Cafe in Solana Beach for breakfast, Snooze Cafe for breakfast (Carmel Valley or Hillcrest), Slater’s 50/50 or Hodads for burgers, Coyote Cafe in Old Town for Mexican. That’s just a few. I am sure I am missing a ton. LOL. We eat out for breakfast a lot, so those are my biggest suggestions. I am happy you are enjoying our weather, because us locals are freezing our butts off!!

Reply

In Carlsbad near San Diego there is a little café called Café Elisa. Wonderful breakfast and great white hot chocolate and the view isn’t too shabby either.

Reply

You MUST MUST MUST eat at SNOOZE! They seriously have the BEST breakfast in the WORLD!! Everything is delicious, but I recommend their pancakes! You can even get a pancake flight and have three different signature pancakes!

Reply

Girlfriend, how long are you here? Text me if you have time to meet up!

Reply

I love fresh cherries, but absolutely NO to the maraschino cherries. I watched a “How Its Made” years ago on them and haven’t touched one since….

Reply

I’m a Canadian with a goal to race a half or full marathon in each US state :)

I’m at 12 and have 3 already booked for 2016 (Arizona, Alabama and Ohio). It’s such a great way to travel and learn about new places – and make new friends!!

I’ve also raced in Dublin, Ireland :)

That tomato soup looks delicious!
