My eyes are pink and tips from a 15:04 5ker!

I forgot to tell you, I woke up yesterday with my eyes sealed shut.  Fake eyelashes make this situation especially tricky to undo.  Luckily,  I started on the eye drops right away so I won’t be contagious for much longer.  For some reason I thought pink eye was just a kid thing… nope, turns out it is a 29 year old thing too.  I don’t know why my body is so angry at me lately, I need to find a way to make it forgive me.

PS putting in eye drops is quite the ordeal for me because I blink right at the wrong time every time.

You are welcome for the especially close up selfie.

This little girl of mine loves baking just as much as I do and those bananas in the background were in desperate need to be used for some baking.

IMG 0518

This was Brooke’s very first time making banana bread—>  we used this whole wheat banana blueberry muffin recipe.  She rocked it and we ate them for dinner along with beef jerky because it just sounded really good at the time.

IMG 0527

Brooke insisted we sit outside and watch the snow storm that went down last night.

IMG 0537

And bless Megan’s heart.  She brought my favorite gas station froyo over.  She braved the snow storm to bring chocolate, vanilla and peanut butter flavored goodness right to my doorstep.

IMG 0538

PS I have been loving this lately but then again I love all flavored gum.  And this picture reminded me that I need to paint my nails blue and yellow today.

I am super stoked to share an interview that I got to do with Katie Mackey!

Some incredible things about Katie—>  Her 1500m PR is 4:04!!!  Her 5k PR is 15:04 and she ran on Team USA in last year’s IAAF World Relays 4x1500m team.  She placed 2nd in the mile at the 2015 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships and she joined the Brooks Beasts when it was created in 2013!

·        What does a typical week of workouts look like for you?

Usually we do two hard workouts a week on Tuesdays and Fridays to incorporate some sort of race-specific speedwork, tempo threshold running and aerobic training. Every Sunday, we do a long run of 90 minutes to two hours. These used to be my least favorite of the workouts, but now I kind of look forward to them! One of the most important parts of the week is the recovery run, we do these on Mondays and Wednesdays. On these days I run as slow as I need to, and they help keep me from grinding myself into the ground over a long period of intense training. On Thursdays, we have a longer moderate run and circuit to prepare us for Friday’s session.

·        How long have you been running for and when did you realize that you had so much potential as a runner?

My dad has always been a runner, and he started saving me a mile at the end of his long runs as far back as I can remember. I loved it! So, I decided to race in a meet that my elementary school put on, and I got my butt kicked by all the kids that were in soccer. But I really enjoyed competing, and I wasn’t too far behind them- I even won the long jump! Junior high is when I first realized that not only did I enjoy running, but it was fun to work towards goals, be part of a team and win races!

·        Do you have any tips for new runners?

Keep it fun! But also remember, anything worth doing is hard, and you will fail sometimes. Failure is a friend and not an enemy though, because you learn and come back stronger than you were before.

·        I’d love to hear about your favorite race memory!

My favorite race memory has to be racing in the Olympic Stadium at the London Diamond League in 2013. The tickets were sold out and there were 67,000 people in the stands! I’ve never been on the track in a stadium with so much energy. It was very surreal, the only thing I could think was “this must be how NFL players feel!” They even had flames that came out of the ground the last 100 meters of every race! And to cap it all off, I met Usain Bolt and he smiled at me, which was pretty cool.

·        What are some of your favorite mantras that you use during a race or hard work out?

Usually I repeat something that my coach says to me about a particular training session or race that gives me confidence. If all else fails, I just tell myself “you are tough!”

·        What nutrition tips do you have for runners?

Nutrition is one of the most important tools an athlete has to aid in proper recovery and injury prevention. I always try to think about getting the most “bang for my buck” from my food: for example, an apple and generous tablespoon of peanut butter is about 250-300 calories while a bagel is about the same amount of calories but lacks the vitamins and minerals that the apple contains. So if the majority of your calories come from fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and healthy whole grains like quinoa, you are giving your body the proper building blocks to rebuild itself. The 30-minute window following a run or hard workout is also very important for runners, and taking a recovery drink like Endurox with simple carbohydrates and protein can replenish your body’s stores quickly so you recover faster and feel better the next day.

·        What is your favorite shoe to run in?

It depends on the day and training session! My go to is the Ghost, I do the majority of my training in this shoe because it’s just the right amount of neutral cushioning that my foot needs, but it is still a fairly lightweight shoe. For tempo runs the new Launch 2 is hands down the best shoe I have ever worked out in, they are light but give my feet and lower legs enough cushion so that they don’t get super beat up. I race and do speed work in the ELMN8’s- they are firm and keep me on my toes feeling bouncy!

·        What race distance is your favorite and are there any new race distances that you are wanting to do soon?

My true love is the mile. In my mind, it’s the perfect balance of speed, strength and tactics! I’ve raced the 5K before, but I guess it still feels like a fairly new and unexplored event to me after I was able to have a big breakthrough last year. I don’t think I’ll go any longer than that for the time being.

·        Any tips or tricks that you can share with us on how to increase our speed?

Mechanically, focus on your arms. If you relax your fists (watch sprinters, they never have their hands in fists!) and pump your arms you can actually get a lot of power, and it can help your rhythm when your legs are fatigued at the end of a race. For training, try incorporating more strides, circuits or plyometrics into your routine a few times a week after runs. Strength=Speed. I know that has helped me a lot!

Thanks for sharing with us Katie!!!!

What was the last thing that you baked?  Do you have any items that you tend to bake most often?

Favorite muffin?

-Any that have streusel on top.

How many years, months or days have you been running?!?

I’ve been running for 20 plus years
And the best advice I can give you in regards to nutrition is to eat anti-inflammatory foods. It helps.

I don’t know that I’ve ever had pink eye – hope you’re back to 100% soon!

I don’t know what the last thing I baked was, its been a few weeks! Probably a raspberry tart for my husbands birthday? I’m with you, anything with streusel is the best!

I’ve been running for about 23 years now…wow, that makes me feel old! I just started really young!

Hydration is so important and I think people forget about that! DRINK WATER!

-The last thing I baked was chicken! I have a ton of healthy recipes for muffins and brownies that I want to try though!
-Cinnamon spice muffins are soooo good. Mimi’s Cafe has THE BEST cinnamon spice muffins in the world.
-I’ve been running for 6 years!! (Since the 6th grade)
-My tip is to try to try to eat as real as possible. I discovered an app called Fooducate that rates all foods and gives them a grade. It helps me avoid overly processed foods. Ever since I’ve gotten rid of processed foods, I feel much more energized! It’s been helping my running performance as well!

Happy Wednesday!!!

Oh man, pink eye? What next, right? Hopefully nothing else because Monday will be here so fast. Get better!!
Thanks for that interview. I love the quote about “Failure is a friend and not an enemy though, because you learn and come back stronger than you were before.” I’ll need to remember that!

As far as organized running, I’ve been running since high school track (about 12 years ago!) but as far as actually enjoying running and doing it for myself and my sanity– it’s been about 3 years. And I’m loving the journey :)

I need to get better at refueling right after a run or a workout. I eat the right foods but after I shower and stretch and ponder life a bit. Always forget about that important 30 minute window! I need to read up on that…

While reading this I ate cottage cheese + grapes + cinnamon…. thought you’d like to know! ;) Feel better, Janae!!!!

Ugh I’ve had pink eye a few times as an adult – not fun!

I just started running in Nov 2012. I ran my first 5k then, and did my first marathon a year later! I did 2 more marathons in 2014, and now I’ve got a bun in the oven so I’m putting distance running on hold until next year when I hope to do my first 50k.

I love to bake all sorts of bread: whole wheat, pitas, bagels, and my favorite: a whole wheat cinnamon swirl bread.
My favorite muffins are an oatmeal blueberry chocolate chip with a streusal topping that I made for my blog. I could eat them every day.
I’ve been running since I was 18, so about 7 years now.
Hope your pink eye heals! And yay for yellow and blue Boston nails!

What a great interview! Now i need to try the Launches because I’m also a Ghost girl!!! :)

Oh, no. Pink eye. I had that last year. Turns out it’s a 40 year old thing too.

My favorite recipe is from a Cooking Light cookbook for Banana Bread. It is out of this world.

I’ve been running 5ish years. Took time off for back surgery. I could kick myself I didn’t start running sooner! I’m addicted.

Reply

Thanks for the interview! I love reading about speedy runners and their training. And HOLY ABS! She’s awesome!

Sorry about your pink eye :( I hope it heals quickly!

Reply

I have a trick for your eyedrops… I used to have a really hard time, too, and a guy at work told me to tilt my head sideways – ear toward shoulder – and look in a mirror (both to see what you’re doing and to distract you), then drop it from above… it hits the side of your eye. (Does that make sense?) It helped me loads!

Reply

ugh on pink eye but the drops usually work pretty fast!

I’v been running on and off for 10 years but consistently running for about 6. I just started a new training plan to PR in the 10K. I really love the half marathon but I thought I’d try something different so I opted for the 10K and will pick a half after that to train for :)

You MUST show us a picture of your nails after you do them blue and yellow! I try to paint my nails to match my race outfit too :) Glad I’m not the only one!

I’ve had some pretty serious eye issues before ranging from pink eye to corneal abrasions. I hope you feel better Janae, eyes are such sensitive so I know your pain. I love putting a warm towel on my face…it feels so good!

Running for 7 years.
Nutrition tip: I drink tart cherry juice concentrate after running. It’s a great anti-inflammatory.
So sorry for the pink eye!!!

Reply

Pink eye is the WORST! I got it 4 times last year – awful each time. My eyes would swell and hurt too, but the drops always helped in a day or so…hope it gets better soon!!

Reply

HRG – what’s your recommendation on just getting started in the running game. Couch to 5k has a big following, but do you have a plan you recommend or a specific thought around just getting going as a newbie?

Reply

My advice would just be practise your nutrition so that it becomes second nature during a race. And eat/fuel before you’re hungry and losing energy!!

Reply

I live in fear of pink eye all the time after getting it a couple of times in college. I think it was from touching my eyes after holding onto the bars on public transportation so now I am especially paranoid about touching my face when there might be germs on my hands. Wishing you a speedy recovery – I can think of no more uncomfortable ailment!

Reply

I love her advice on just focusing on nutritional bang for her buck. Instead of tracking calories, I do my best to ensure that I eat quality foods.

So sorry to hear about your pink eye! Get better SOON!

Oh no- pink eye?? Feel better. We are all pulling for you. xoxo
What a fun interview. I LOVE the answer she gave about advice for new runners. It could very well apply to anything in life. Love it.
I have only been runing for tw0 years, since age 39, but I am so beyond hooked, I can’t believe it. Sometimes I wonder how life might have been better all those years had I started earlier, but then life being what it was is kind of what brought me to run in the first place, so it’s okay.
I bake a lot here at the farm, maybe too much. My girls helped me when they were little like Brooke, so sweet. Now my oldest works out of state and I bake and send things to her. LOL
Yes to banana bread. Yes also to chocoate chip oatmeal cookies, pecan pralines, apple tart, and all of it.
Feel better, serously! xoxo

Love the interview! It’s always interesting to hear from elites. I mean a 15:04 5K is crazy!

I hope that eye clears up soon. I think it’s common for runners to get sick at the end of a hard training cycle. I’ve heard that marathon training actually weakens the immune system leaving us susceptible to colds and things like that towards the end of training or right after the race.

Reply

Muffins and cup cakes -I will making lots of Mickey Mouse cupcakes for my 3 yo’s bday this weekend!

Running: 16 years -I started running when I was 12, after I got sick of piano lessons. I ran my first 5K and was hooked!

Nutrition is tough – I don’t think I have figured this out yet while training. I try to focus on veggies and lean meat, and complex carbs, but I would love to find out what is ideal for my body. I also rely on my post workout chocolate milk =)

Janae – while sick, how does running impact your recovery? I have found that with a simple head cold easy runs actually help me. If I have any kind of a cough or body aches I don’t tempt fate with runs. Any advice here since you’re working through a cold and Boston training? Thank you and hope the pink eye goes away ASAP!

Reply

My 32 yo husband, 4 and 2 yo boys all have pink eye as a result of sinus congestion. Spot of people here have had the same symptoms. I’m hoping to stay well for a women’s retreat this weekend in the mountains!!
I love the focus on nutrition in this interview! That’s why I like following you, I love all your dinner pics and whimsical frozen yogurt pics. It’s ok to indulge, all the time when you choose to workout and make other healthy choices!! Makes me excited about finishing my nutrition degree and becoming a RD!
You’re almost there…getting excited for the big day!!!

Oh, no. I have had many eye infections and they are not fun. But so good you got on top of it early! I LOVE TO BAKE. We go through a loaf of banana bread every few days so I am always making that! My dad is celiac so a few times per month I bake him GF chocolate chip cookies. I have been running since I was 17 (so, 26 years). I definitely went through a time where all I did was run, a lot. Now it’s 3-4x per week and only 5-6 miles. Feels good to be able to do it as I get older (and have issues such as arthritis in my back). Super glad I love my bike and the pool, too! Take care of yourself, Janae!

My mom works at an elementary school and used to get pink eye all the time! I hope I never get it because it seems so painful and I can’t deal with any eye issues..freaks me out.

I loved the tips from Katie! I don’t think I could ever run that fast (geez!!!) but I’ll have to incorporate some of her tips in my training. And holy abs…

I started running when I was 8, so it’s been 16 years- 2/3 of my life..wow…

Ice been running for like 10 years. Didn’t become serious until the last couple years.
Wow she really is a beast.!! That’s awesome, love her nutrition advice :) I would say try to eat as little things with ingredients. Your food should be the ingredients. But I don’t eat healthy. Haha.

Hope you start feeling soon.!!! Sorry girl

I still don’t really run… I just workout and live through you racers!

I have only baked (gf) cookie-bars recently with m&m eggs baked into it. Otherwise I stopped baking because I don’t want to deal with gf flours and things.

I don’t care for muffins.. too bready. I LOVE FROSTING though.

Your eyes look SO SORE. Ouch. I’m glad you’re getting all this sickness out now rather than this weekend. Phew. I’ll take any muffin with chocolate chips in it. And I ran my first marathon when I was 20 and I’m now 37, so I’ve been running long distance for more than 17 years.

I am horrible at baking and not a huge fan of it. But I LOVE blueberry muffins, especially if they’re not completely cooked and still a bit gooey in the middle.

I’ve been running since middle school but became a lot more dedicated to it back in 2009.

Sorry about your pink eye! I thought only teenagers got mono, but I just recently got over it. Hope it’s a healthy road for you from here on out!

Reply

I’m running Boston too! For the first time, and I’m not feeling great this week. I woke up with a cough and my eyes were puffy yesterday. I’ve been sleeping and resting, and surprisingly not freaking out. I think this is a blessing for us! Forcing us to rest and take it easy. Question..are you running with your phone? And are you planning on running the race in a long sleeve. Hope to see you there!

Reply

I’ve never really thought about how I hold my arms before. Now I’m going to watch a bunch of sprinting videos. Thanks for the interview! Hope your pink eye clears up quick!

I haven’t baked for a couple months – probably chocolate chip cookies right after I found out I was pregnant. I guess it was a craving?

I’ve been running now for about 10 years. At first it was on and off and not really a routine habit. I would say that I have been running routinely/weekly now for the past 8 years. I love it!!

My biggest nutrition tip is to fuel with a nice balance of potassium, carbs, sodium, and protein, both before and during longer runs. Fueling is key. I think everyone has to go through trial and error to find what works for them. Play with different fueling and recovery methods, meals, etc. Note what works and what doesn’t. Personally, a morning cup of coffee always helps with my running because 1) the caffeine boost, and 2) it gets things flowing (if you know what I mean).

Reply

That Megan is swell. A friend who brings you fro yo is a true friend indeed.

My favorite store bought muffin is chocolate chocolate chip or anything with streusel, like yourself. What can I say? I am a 7 yr old. All this muffin talks makes me want to listen to Jim Gaffigan:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o-u4IwXkbE

I probably bake cookies the most.

I will need to try that gum. Flavored gums are the best. They can TOTALLY replace dessert!! ;)

I have been running for 13years and I still cant imagine running as Katie. Ba-nan-as.

The EXACT same thing happened to me Monday morning! My eyes were crusted shut so I went straight to the doctor and she told me I had a sinus infection and pink eye. UGH.

I hope Brooke doesn’t get it!

I’m bookmarking that recipe, that sounds great. I made banana bread muffins last week since I had browning bananas and I was bored. I didn’t have chopped walnuts but I had the rest of the ingredients.

Oh no I hope your eyes feel better soon!! And yum banana bread!

oh man, pink eye is no joke. I got it in college (along with a pretty nasty intestinal virus) and was out for like 2 weeks. Hopefully it clears up by Boston!

do cupcakes with sprinkles count as my favorite type of muffin? they should!

Reply

I made blondies on Monday. I’ve been running for 18 years, I started out the same way she did, running the last part of my dad’s long runs with him.

Reply

The last thing I baked was a black forest cake for my kiddo’s presentation on Germany. It’s definitely not in our usual rotation:-) I used to be really into baking, these days not so much. I do more microwave mug cakes and pancakes.

My favorite type of muffin are double chocolate chunk. AKA non-frosted cupcakes.

Reply

I love the little muffin/cupcake cups that you and Brooke have used. And thanks for sharing Katie’s great tips. I’m not a big runner, but love to learn from the best! Hope you are feeling 100 percent soon, J!

Reply

I have been running consistently for 6 years now! I used to hate it in college but got into it in grad school when I did a race and got hooked!

Reply

I don’t even remember the last thing that I baked – how awful is that? My favorite muffin is blueberry with a nice sugary crunchy topping. The perfect muffin is light and fluffy on the bottom with a crisp top, in my opinion. I have been running for a year and a half. Drinking lots of water has helped me with running. I have noticed that if I am properly hydrated day to day, I am less likely to get winded/dry mouth on a run.

Reply

I like things in muffins. Blueberries, bananas, chocolate chips, cinnamon sugar clusters… not nuts so much. I’ve been running since January 2012, so a little over 3 years! And have run 5 marathons, 2 ultras (50ks), and have my first 50-miler in August…. eeee!

I think the biggest thing for me has been finding sweets in other things besides dessert. I tend to want donuts, fro yo, pastries, etc after long runs…. no bueno.

Reply

I learned an eye drop trick from my dad who has glaucoma and has to do eye drops several times a day. Put the drops on the inside corner of your eye while it’s closed. Then open your eye and it will flow right in. Hope those drops work quickly for you!

On the baking front, I really don’t. But I like being friends with people who do. :)

I started running consistently after college but never did any events. Then I took a long break when I started having kids and didn’t start again until about 9 years ago.

Reply

You are staying remarkably positive given the health struggles you’ve had this week. Keep it up! I swear by positive mantras. Ok, actually – I’m working on that. But everyone says they work regardless of the problem. :-)
Sometimes I find my body gets out of whack (and sometimes gets sick) if I’m eating a lot of the same exact things day in and day out – i.e. the nutrients I’m putting into my body are all good, but they are all the same so I’m lacking in one area. If I switch it up a little that sometimes helps.

Reply

Hope your eyes are better soonest. Keep up with those drops and you should get better quickly.

Hope Brooke doesn’t get it too.

Here’s to a great run in Boston.

oh no about your eyeballs being sealed shut! i thought pink eye was only for kids too…i need to go wash my hands right now!

I’ve been running for 20 years now! Nutrition wise, I recommend eliminating gluten and dairy- they tend to be common allergens and many folks feel better when they don’t eat them! Otherwise, balancing vegetables and protein, and trying to limit sugar.

Reply

Those muffins look great! Wait, it snowed there? Not cool.

Whenever I start running more and longer distances, I have to make sure that my meals are generally pretty plain or my stomach will revolt the next day on a run. It’s not pretty. I eat a lot of plain chicken and sweet potatoes. I hope you feel better soon!!

Reply

Ah your poor eyes! Get better soon.

Last thing I baked was some sugar cookies!

I’ve been running for about 8 years now! I first started when I took a jogging class at BYU and my professor told me that I had a great pace. She thought I had done track in high school. Definitely didn’t!

Definitely getting enough carbs, fruit and veggies in is so helpful. Stay away from the treats and empty calories! Make it all count.
