10 biggest lessons I have learned this training cycle.

My training for the Boston Marathon is coming to an end.  It has gone by way too fast but at the same time I am so ready to keep on tapering and then race as hard as I can.  With each training cycle I always learn a few things and I thought I would share a few today!

1.  To eat more iron.  A few months ago I started eating way more iron.  Maybe it was the placebo effect but oh my goodness, once I started eating more iron I felt a million times better during my runs.

2.  To stop overanalyzing or stressing about a hard workout.  I typically love to stall before getting speedwork done.  I like to come up with every excuse to push it back a day or to stop and chat for a while before starting.  This time around I have learned to just stop thinking about it and to get it done.   Get in, get out, move on with your day.  It is supposed to be hard and waiting around to do the work isn’t going to make it any easier.  I love the feeling after a tough workout so I am trying to stop the complaining and to get the work done.

3.  That my mom is the best.  Well, I already knew that but I sure can’t thank her enough for her helping with Brooke for the long runs and speed work sessions during marathon training.  You can only do so many miles on the treadmill without losing your mind and she sure helped to prevent me from losing too much of my mind over the last few months.

IMG 6833

4.  That I really like running to Linkin’ Park.  In previous training cycles I have trained more with people but this time around I have been on my own for most of my runs.  I have really realized that angry music motivates me during my speedwork to move my legs faster than non-angry music.

5.  Seeing a chiropractor regularly keeps me running pain free.  I know I talk about him a lot but it is because every time something starts to hurt a little bit he is able to fix it.  I am the queen of injuries and it has been a game changer to have someone that has figured out the source of all of my injuries and fixed them.

6.  Racing a half marathon during a marathon training cycle may not be best for me.  I have a hard time not going 130% in a race and so having a race in the middle of a training cycle left me pretty fatigued for a while afterwards.   Who knows though… maybe pushing through workouts for a few weeks on legs that are really tired from a race will help me in the long run?  I don’t know, I just know it took me awhile to recover from that race and I’m not sure how that affected my other workouts.

7.  To be more patient with myself.  I tend to get pretty frustrated with myself when my running (and other things in life) don’t click right away.  This training cycle I have been much better at being patient with the process.  With being patient and allowing myself time to build up endurance and speed.  Training for a marathon or a new personal record doesn’t come easy or quick for anybody and I think I have finally realized that.  I’ve been a lot easier on myself about trusting the process of slowly building up speed/endurance but also at the same time training my guts out.   I have also learned to be more patient with myself when I feel exhausted.  To rest more.  Marathon training =s way more couch time at night watching Netflix and an earlier bedtime.  It’s just the way it goes.

IMG 6150

8.  To log more than just the pace and mileage in my running journal.  This training cycle I have kept a very detailed log.  Writing down as much as I can about the run has helped me to really figure out what nutrition works best for my training, how different emotions affect my running and it helps me to remember what helped me to push through the toughest workouts of the cycle.

9.  That with proper training (aka a coach telling me what to do and not my own crazy ideas) that I can reach higher mileage without an injury than I previously thought I could.  I had my first ever 70 mile week this training cycle and I felt great.  Previous to this time I thought that 53-55 miles per week was my absolute max.

10.  I have learned that you can only do so much and to be okay with that.  I’ve had a few people notice that I have lost some of the muscle (that I had finally gained…) and I just had to shrug my shoulders.  It happens.  We are all doing the best we can and I refuse to work out any more than I already am at this point.  Marathon training isn’t easy on your body.  Learning to draw the line (without worrying about it) in terms of exercise in order to keep up with everything else going on in life has been key for me this training cycle.  Maybe after the marathon I will have more time to strength train but I am a mom first.  Losing some muscle definition is a-okay with me if that means I was able to keep up with the really important things in life during marathon training.

I mean, I still try to get in core work and a few of the necessities to help with my running but it is usually with Brooke underneath me and a banana peel just a few feet away.

What are your weekend plans?!?

A few things that you have been learning about running/yourself during your current training cycle?

Did you watch Full House as a kid?  What other shows remind you of your childhood?

Racing a half during marathon training doesn’t work well for me, either.
Weekend plans: pacing a training group for 17 miles and Easter!
This is the most relaxed I’ve ever been during a training cycle. I’ve hit my mileage but I haven’t sweated my paces unless it was a track or tempo workout. We’ll see how Boston goes, but I’ve enjoyed it:)
I watched full house, Cosby, saved by the bell, fresh prince…so many good shows.
Happy Friday!!

With marathon training something always has to give, it is SUPER tough on the body! I watched all those shows and they all bring back memories. Also Who’s the Boss and The Wonder Years :)

I’m with you on the half marathon in training, I often wind up taking forever to recover from it and it throws the plan off.

Weekend plans: Lots of family time: dying Easter eggs with my beautiful kiddos, egg hunts, Church, big Easter dinner and enjoying this holiday!!

Things I am learning during this injury cycle: Patience, faith and this too shall pass…

TV shows: all of them! Loved Full House, Fresh Prince, Saved, Boy Meets World…

PS: You are such a great Mom and that is what is most important!! You rocked this cycle AND were a great Mom and that is very admirable.

Happy Easter!!!

Reply

Must be something in the air because I’ve done better this training cycle than I have in the past also. Less excuses and just got the work done.

My nephews 5th birthday party on Saturday and Easter on Sunday! Those pancakes are so cute!

I loved Full House! Saved by the Bell, Boy Meets World, The Secret World of Alex Mack and are you afraid of the Dark (the intro music was the scariest part!) so many awesome shows from that time period!

Reply

weekend plans : working.
Running has taught me I can do things all on my own :)
Full house definitely was a childhood favorite!

Reply

Iron deficiencies are very common in female endurance runners! I started taking an iron supplement during my first training cycle and felt 100x better.

Also, I own every season of Full House on DVD so if there is ANY sort of a remake my heart will explode. #TeamStamosForever

Reply

I think that learning not to compare your current training cycle against a past one is important. Just accept where you are today and know that you are working now to get faster.

Reply

Weekend plans: 8 easy miles and Easter!
This training cycle I’ve definitely learned how to push harder and keep pace through tough workouts. I think I’ve finally nailed my fueling also!
I watched some Full House as a kid, and I also watched Boy Meets World and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Hope you have a wonderful Friday!

Reply

I’ve learned to just getter’ done! Instead of contemplating the miles or dreading the intervals, just get up and go.

Childhood shows from = Doug, Global Guts, Rocket Power

Reply

sounds like it’s been a great training cycle for you.! And like you’ve learned a lot.
:)
No weekend plans really. Just get some runs in, work, and get snuggles from my little girl

Reply

You have had such an amazing training cycle and I can’t wait to see how you do in your race! I have actually learned the most about myself lately from not running and trying to get to the bottom of my injury issues- but like you I think I will need to consistently see a chiropractor to make sure that no injuries creep up because my body likes to get all unbalanced all the time which eventually leads to injuries!

Reply

This weekend I am coaching some of my students in a dodgeball tournament (yes, you read that correctly), and then I am going to RELAX. And eat froyo, of course.

I’ve learned through training that everyone is different. Trying to base your workouts on someone else’s plan isn’t a good idea. What works for someone else won’t always work for you.

I definitely watched Full House and all of the other shows you mentioned. They made my Friday nights! I also used to watch California Dreams on Saturday mornings. It was so cheesy but so awesome.

Reply

I loved Full House! I still remember watching the very last episode.

Can’t wait to track you on marathon day – I usually have the race up on a projector at school to watch the elites race

Reply

LOL Full House! Yep, that brings back some memories :)
I’m just getting my grocery shopping list together and those bunny pancakes were on my menu for Easter already. I love holiday themed pancakes!
Saturday morning is an 18 mile run with our running club. Good to be around some other runners after being stuck inside all winter!

Reply

I think you have learned fabulous lessons and I am so happy everything is finally working as it should for you. No one works harder than you, Janae.

Lessons I have learned are to see the big picture and cross train! My body likes only 3 runs per week so I am glad I love swimming, cycling, yoga & weights.

Weekend plans = dinner w/ friends downtown tonight; spring clothes shopping w/ husband tomorrow and Easter church, lunch and bowling w/ the family on Sunday.

Reply

Loved Full House and Boy Meets World. Do follow either of the girls on social media? Kimmy (Andrea Barber) is a runner and DJ (Candace Cameron Bure) is very active- running and working out. They both did a Tough Mudder together. I hope they do a new series together-I would totally watch it!

Reply

Totally watched full house!
I learned that it’s ok to loosen the reins and go with the flow and take away my big goals just to stay injury free and complete my races. There will always be another race to train for. Not all of them have to be hard effort.
This weekend I am meeting my boyfriends dad for the first time. Curious to see if there is similarity. I have seen pictures and he does look a lot alike.

Reply

Boy Meets World was definitely my favorite show as a kid! I still watch the reruns when they’re on! Haha! Also — I agree with you about angry music for speed work! I’m the same way! For easy runs, I love Amy Winehouse though. There’s still a beat, but it’s way more relaxed.

Reply

great list. what did you start seeing a chiropractor for? is it back related or just running related?

Reply

Hey Nicole! I started going to him because of some hip/leg issues that I was having from running!

Reply

Loved Full House and still watch it with my son! Other favorites from growing up were Facts of Life, Punky Brewster, Family Ties (I know, I am totally an 80’s child lol)

Reply

I am going out with a friend tonight–girls’ night out! Then Sunday I will drive to my parents and have Easter lunch.

Things I’ve learned: you have to switch up your workout (especially if you really don’t want to do anything at all.. do you ever have those days?), and music is everything! (the difference between quitting (NEVER) and keeping on going).

Boy Meets World, Step by Step, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, Rugrats, Clarissa Explains It All, Murder She Wrote, Alex Mac, … I could go on forever.

Reply

I can’t fit “everything” in during marathon training either- as much as I would love to do yoga, biking and strength training as well there simply is not time. I think all of us marathoners do the best we can! Often people who do are not distance runners expect “us” to look like bodybuilders simply based on out time spent exercising hahaha….
I’m curious about how you have increased your iron intake? Are you taking a supplement or simply adding more iron rich foods (if so- what?)

Reply

YES and YES!!! I completely agree with everything that you just said. I am not taking a supplement, I mainly upped my red meat and spinach intake! I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

Tons of Easter stuff this weekend! I would love to hear more about your coach and running coaches in general. What you like, what is different about each coach, etc:))) Also, what kind of treadmill do you run on at home?

Reply

HEY!!! I will totally write a post about this. I don’t have a treadmill at home right now so I just use the gym ones and I am not sure what they are. Sorry!

Reply

Something always has to give when you’re training. Believe me I’ve tried maintaining my strength training when I was training for a race and your get too mentally and physically tired for both. Your body cannot do both. It’s a recipe for disaster. I think some cafe rio is in order for me this weekend. I have a fair analysis at Mayo Clinic today. Hoping they can correct my walking problem from wearing a boot so long. The test of the weekend in packing for Germany!!!

Reply

Weekend plans are a seven miler by myself. My running partner hurt her back, so I’m running solo. :(

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned about my running that taking a day off is necessary. I’m forty and before I would go all out, but now I have to respect my body and the process more. I am not totally okay with not running every day, but I realize my body makes the final decision, and I have to live with it and find the best in it in order to be happy.

Reply

I am running a half marathon tomorrow!!!! I wish the weather was going to be like yesterday…but cold and windy is the forecast…oh well. I loved Saved By the Bell and Full house! I also watched Mickey Mouse Club, Kids Incorperated, MacGyver :), and a bunch of other cheesy shows :)

Reply

I can’t wait for the weekend! I’m running the Emigration Canyon 10 miler tomorrow, then eating Easter chocolate (lots) and helping a friend move.

I’ve learned that its ok not to always be training hard…I have been so tired/busy/stressed trying to finish my phd, and I’m trying hard to make sure running is fun and helps me relax.

Reply

I’ve learned that speed work really does improve my running. I used to just log miles like Pac-Man, same pace, I’d plod along and get ’em done but you inspired me to try out a couple of speed sessions! Those workouts have improved my running economy and it didn’t take months of doing them either. I noticed a difference right away.

Reply

those easter pancakes are amazing!! So clever :) Also boy meets world is just the best show ever. I found it on MTV the other week and watched a few episodes and it brought me right back to my childhood… love it

Reply

I’m so glad you posted all of the information about your chiropractor. I was a big wimp and was too scared to see one until this spring, my training had basically ended because of constant leg injuries. They did active release on my calves and hamstrings and I had my IT band scraped on Monday (OMG OUCH!!) but I can already feel a difference and hopefully no more IT band issues…fingers crossed. But even though I’ve had to scrap this spring marathon because of injury, I learned a lot from the training cycle. I run because I love it, not because I’m a pro or because I have to, so don’t be so hard on yourself when it just doesn’t happen. I’m looking forward to starting up again when I’m healed. There is always another race :) have a great weekend!

Reply

Love the lessons learned! It’s crazy how much we grow as people just by running. I know I become a better person through training and learn about myself and my limits each training cycle. Love it!

I have a race this weekend and then planning on spending lots of time with family and at church!

I learned that there’s no excuse to not get in my workout (within reason.) So far this cycle I’ve been in a musical and took two trips. I would usually let that interrupt my cycle and stop me from working out, but now I’ve just prioritized exercise and got it done (sometimes at 5AM before work) and I’m so proud of myself! I’ve also learned that I like working out in the morning. Crazy!

Reply

I remember getting home from school every day, and putting Full House on. I was so sad when the show ended.

Reply

“You can only do so much and to be okay with that” —> preach on.

I loved full house…and like Bridget came home every day from school and watched!!

This weekend I will be seeing friends in town for Easter and celebrating Sunday with my family!

Reply

I just made the bunny pancake!

Reply

Can you give me deets on that restaurant??? Looks amazing. Think I need to go there today.

Reply

YES!!! You must go asap—> 180 Tacos!

Reply

My sister and family are coming home. Looking forward to all the Easter traditions, especially Hope’s first Easter egg hunt.

Reply

I learned through training for my first marathon that I CAN do hard things, and that running is so much more about the mental than the physical. I also appreciate my body for the vehicle it is to do all these crazy things rather than how it looks all the time. Our bodies are amazing things!

This weekend is a lot of family time:)

Reply

-This weekend I have a hike planned on Saturday and Easter Bootcamp planned on Sunday! And then there will be lots of eating and family time on Sunday of course :)
-I’ve been learning that I don’t like stressing about getting faster or having to “prove myself” to others. I came to the realization that I run because I love it, so I need to stop putting so much pressure on myself!
-I used to love Full House!!! I have all of the DVDs :) Other shows that remind me of my childhood are the Disney shows (like Suite Life and That’s So Raven) I used to love those!!

Reply

I love those bunny pancakes! I think the only place I’ve gone for lunch and dinner the same day was Whole Foods. That’s because we eat lunch there before we start shopping and then we oftentimes get the takeout from there for dinner.haha

Reply

Boy Meets World and any of the Nick at Night shows make me think of my childhood, especially I Love Lucy!

Reply

THOSE PANCAKES! I might have to do that this weekend, or at least attempt it!

I’m very interested in this Full House spinoff, I was obsessed as a kid!

Reply

This weekend = long run, Easter celebrations, dying eggs, packing up the house, selling furniture, movies

My current training cycle is much different from those previously because I am training for a half marathon (in three weeks) and am 16 weeks pregnant. Because my speed has slowed significantly and I’m no longer running to “compete” or “get faster” running has taken on a new meaning – teaching me to be humble, to enjoy those moments to myself, and a different respect for my body and health.

Full House – Never missed an episode. Heck, I don’t think I ever missed a rerun either. Haha.

Reply

All great lessons! It’s been so fun watching your training cycle! You’re going to kill it at Boston!

The manfriend, dog and I are going camping this weekend! I have to work Saturday but then we’re packing up the jeep and getting out of town. I’m so excited!

Reply

I watched all of those shows! I even have full house dolls, and the uncle jesse one is barbie size and still in the box and has a guitar!

I have work this weekend and some housesitting, but a date night with the hubby tonight!!!

Maybe a long run if I can fit it in…………I have learned lately that I can’t focus on the number on the scale……..it can control you if you let it……….I am focusing on feeling fit and strong, and I know a few pounds difference between this year and a few years ago is most likely muscle gain, so that is good. I have also learned I love running in warm weather, but the pollen sucks!

Reply

I am stalling as I read your blog right now! I have a 10 mile pace run that I am doing by myself and I am trying to head out the door. I will report back when I finish! My race is in 2 weeks and I am hoping to qualify for Boston. Been a goal of mine for 10 years. I am not a naturally fast runner but I love distance and Boston seemed attainable when I set the goal. :-) I am hoping it is this year and working my tail off. I have learned many of the same things you have, especially in the patience area.

Shows that remind me of my childhood- Growing Pains (crush on Kirk Cameron), Fresh Prince, Saved by the bell

Ok, ok, time for the run!

Reply

Finished my pace run- woo hoo!! 10 miles at Boston goal pace of 8:23 or faster, ended up with 10.5 miles at 8:19. It was tough but it’s been a big week. Thanks for the motivation to go!

Reply

GIRL!!!! You nailed it! Way to get out the door and rock your 10.5 miles at a killer pace. You’ve got this!

Reply

3x at that restaurant in 30hrs? #ReasonsILoveYou

Im hoping to get out in the warmer weather this weekend! I need to start running more if I am going to run this half next month…

Reply

I’ve had the same experience in the past with the mid training race. You get so caught up in the moment, the adrenaline, and your internal pride that you let it derail what the run should be for the day. Slowly, but surely I’ve talked myself into being okay with posting a time that’s not my best, but is aligned with my training for the day.

Some of the other runners could’ve been gearing their training towards that race, so they should be giving it 100%, and I’m gearing up for a race in the future so sticking to my plan is okay.

Easier said than done on race day, but it’s the way that I’ve shaped my mental thinking on those mid-training races.

Good luck in Boston this year!!

Reply

I love these lessons! I am training for my first marathon and am going through some similar realizations… especially the overanalyzing. I always wondered about adding more iron and how that would effect performance.. I have a slight iron deficiency so I should definitely try to focus on that!

Full house… YES. Always. MK & Ashley in their prime. Danny Tanner has taught me so many valuable life lessons :)

Reply

What kind of iron did you eat and how long before you noticed a difference?

Reply

Mainly red meat and spinach. I feel like I noticed a difference within a few days but once again… that could be placebo effect:)

Reply

I’ve been staying away from all those article about the Full House reboot. My heart just CANNOT handle it if that falls through. Real-life Candace and Andrea are just the greatest people on earth (and runners!).
My other obsession growing up was Home Improvement. JTT can come back to acting and make a show anytime now too!

Reply

By eating more iron- what kind of foods have you added??

Also-I am learning that weeks will be different. Last week I felt like I was hanging on by a string and they were quanity workouts, not quality.
This week I feel amazing. My workouts are done with a purpose.

Reply

Mainly spinach and red meat! YES YES YES… you are so right about how different each week can feel. So glad this week feels so great!

Reply

Great lessons, Janae, especially #10! Also curious what you are doing to increase your iron? Is it those steak salads at 10:30am (which is totally normal in my book by the way)?

Reply

HEY MICHELLE… yeps, steak salads for the win:) Lots of spinach and red meat! I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

Hi Janae!

I loved this post. I really connected with it. The one lesson I’ve learned in my current training is not to internalize everything. If things don’t click right away (in running or life) I tend to internalize it. . . What’s wrong with me that this isn’t happening easier/faster? . . Why can’t I control every aspect of this process? I’m constantly reminding myself — “don’t beat yourself up for going through a process.” Processes take time. Training takes time. And during the process is when most growth happens.

I’m so excited for your marathon – Good luck. I take so much away from your blog. It helps keep me optimistic and happy in running and in life.

Reply

Running in your early 20s is VERY different than running in your mid-late 20s. I used to be able to run crazy mileage everyday without ever getting hurt. Not the case anymore … Such a bummer.

I’ve been getting regular massages but am intrigued by what goes on in a chiropractic session … How did you find yours?! Does your guy know of any legit people in Chicago? :)

Reply

I completely agree with you! I had a few of my runner friends recommend him to me. I will ask him when I see him on Wednesday!

Reply

Ahhh Fresh Prince! They have been playing episodes of it in the morning on MTV and it’s always such a good laugh. Excellently funny, and some great lessons on race.

Reply

I saw a chiropractor after my last marathon and he really helped with scar tissue in my foot and calf. I was just thinking I’d like to see him though out the next marathon training cycle. I crave more meat while training too. so I know I need to up the iron. I’m typically on the low side of normal. I’d really like to get a coach this time. Less second guessing workouts.
Gosh, I’d love to see full house. Such a good family show. My daughter loved watching the show a few years ago when it was on in the morning.

Reply

Brooke is pretty cute with that hat.

I’m going to be getting together with some friends I haven’t seen in months. It’ll be so good to spend some time with them again.

Reply

agreed, moms and chiropractors are the best.

Reply

ohhh my goodness YES to full house. i still find uncle jesse incredibly dreamy!

also…that’s weird and i feel inappropriate for people to say you’re losing muscle mass! that just feels weird. i’m glad you are confident in who you are as a mom and fitness person so keep doing what you’re doing!

Reply

I also think it’s unfeeling for people to judge you during this heavy training cycle. Your body will reflect what you are going through at all times, running high mileage will always deplete muscle. I hope you’re ignoring any negative comments, you ROCK!

Reply

Hi J! Wow! You’ve learned a lot this training cycle. I’ve never run a race longer than a half, and of course, have enjoyed reading about your structured training plan from your coach. I definitely think I should keep track of my nutrition and how it fuels my workouts more, because I bet I could uncover so many patterns. And of all these points – Moms are always the best! Have a wonderful weekend! I’ll be hanging out with my husband, practicing some new group fitness to debut next week and maybe doing a little Easter celebrating. Happy Friday! :)

Reply

I loved full house and still watch the reruns with my little one!
This marathon training cycle, I’ve learned that I HATE mile repeats!!
My last training cycle, I raced a lot. I learned this cycle that I really miss racing during training! I’m the opposite of you-I think it helps me.

Happy Easter!

I really admire how self aware you are. You are constantly seeking to improve and I find that be a great characteristic. :)

I am BEYOND stocked for the Full House spin off! Love Candace Cameron Bure and Andrea Barber (hello- another super awesome marathoner). I hope it lives up to the hype!

Full House is the BEST! The shows I grew up with were Hannah Montana, Spongebob, and That’s So Raven. :) And girl. 70 mile week? You are a rockstar!!

Lots of relaxing and recovering from my 50k that was last weekend.

I never really feel like I have a training cycle….I kind of feel like I’m in constant training mode. For instance, I have 50k races that are training for 50 milers and then my 50 milers are training for more aggressive 50 milers that occur later in the year. Pretty much from March – October is training + racing and then October – Feb is just running for fun. I think the hardest thing for me has been letting go of constantly being attached to mileage goals. I used to always have some ambitious goal that I would beat myself up when I couldn’t reach.

I did watch Full House! I still remember that my best friend Laura and I would watch it together while on the phone with each other after school.

Reply

You have really been working hard during this training cycle. Whatever you do, just remember to take some time to enjoy the experience, because sometimes in such a long run, especially when you push yourself, some awful thing happens and your body just gives out. Anything can derail you, and that is when you need to recall it’s a privilege to be able to do a race or run like the Boston Marathon.

Also, really cute pancakes.

Reply

Thank you so much Patrick, you are so right about enjoying the experience. Have an amazing weekend!

Reply

I love this list! I seriously look up to you a ton, and think you are doing an awesome job of balancing everything. Those pancakes are absolutely adorable! My little family and I are chilling at home this weekend watching conference. Just how I like it! :)

Reply

Oh man. My 50 miler training starts this coming week, and I am going to need to remember all of these things. A lot of the iron stuff, I’m already anemic so I DEFINITELY need the iron!

My weekend involves sleep, running, and work at my 2nd job. womp womp.

LOVE those shows! I changed my name to DJ, Stephanie, AND Michelle when i was little (along with Ariel, all the girl characters on Step by Step…. good stuff).

Reply

In this Boston training cycle, I learned that sometimes less is more. I have felt fresh and strong through the whole thing because I have been dealing with a lot of external life stressors and I am proud of my body for pushing hard but have kept my workouts quality.

This weekend, I am excited to see my family!

Reply

I have a fun and FREE organized trail run tomorrow morning, and then I’m relaxing for the rest of the weekend!

Happy Easter to you and Brooke!

The Boy is sooo making me those pancakes on Sunday! The chocolate chip tootsies!!! I can’t even… :)

Did I watch Full House as a kid?! YUP! I watched a lot of Full House and… Saved By the Bell, Friends, and Beverly Hills 90210.

This weekend I’m running with my group for the first time in weeks, and hopefully getting some cleaning done around the house. It’s in bad shape.

I have been learning that I am capable of running much faster than I ever thought if I just train properly and get out of my own way mentally.

I loved Full House when I was little! And Nick at Night :)

Reply

I’m glad to hear that you’re learning to be more patient with yourself. It’s tough, but so very important :) I’ve learned that I’m burnt out on ultra and marathon training, and ready for a new goal. Not a bad thing at all! I’m a little older than you (ok, quite a few years older than you)… I loved TMNT, Clarissa Explains it All, and Fraggle Rock.

Getting my run in tomorrow a.m. Taking the girls to get Easter dresses. Baking bread for Easter dinner on Sunday. Taking in-laws to dinner Saturday for their “50th” wedding anniversary! Thanks for this. My husband and I have been debating point 6 for a while now as we both raced a half marathon in the middle of our training cycle. He went harder than I did and felt that it took him a really long time to recover fully from it. The only other thing I’ve learned from this training cycle so far is that I’m capable of training solo (I’ve always trained with a group, especially for hard workouts) but, despite that, I’m still terrified at the thought of racing a marathon.

I’m a strength athlete and fighter, not a runner, but I really find that logging EVERYTHING helps. I’ll log my training, my nutrition, and if there’s anything particular about the day that stands out (like I felt HORRIBLE or I felt GREAT, or whatever). I’ve been doing it for years now and when I’m off track I just look back at my notes and figure out what I was doing when I looked/felt/performed better.
