Three things about the below picture.
1. My palm tree head. I think today I am going to try one palm tree on top of Brooke’s head instead of the normal two that I do.
2. I really liked playing in the dirt as a baby and I did my same cheesy smile back then that I do now.
3. Every time I put Brooke’s hair in pigtails and I take her somewhere someone comes up and tells me that she looks like Boo from Monsters Inc because of her big eyes and pig tails. What do you think?
Cowboy Quesadillas for din din. We put chicken, mozzarella cheese, beans, brown rice, corn and green pepper in ours and topped it with pico and avocados.
We each did our own toppings and I clearly layered mine more correctly. It is hard to be the person in the marriage that is always right.
And the finished product with a side of fruit and a ranch/bbq dipping sauce in the back.
Our appetizers before dinner were Doritos. This is the first time in a year that I have wanted to eat Doritos. When I was pregnant with Brooke I was craving them like crazy and I ate way too many of them when I had morning sickness and couldn’t even look at them again after. I am happy they are back in my life again.
Runners: Injured or not, we should all be doing hip strengthening exercises!
I 100% believe that the main reason for my recent IT Band injury were my weak glutes/tight hip flexors (along with too many miles with the jogging stroller and jumping into spin too quickly). I neglected strength training (I don’t think that doing a Jillian DVD once a month was enough;) and stretching and tried to run fast and far with weak glutes and hips and boom… injured!

L.O.L. at the first picture!!!! Seriously that is hilarious. I have to agree I see some resemblance. In a good way! I also had that exact same Doritos experience while pregnant!!! I bought like 6 giant bags and ate most of one in a day then never wanted to look at them again. So weird.
I have had a lot of problems with my running this year because my hips are not as strong as they once were before I got knee surgery last year. My coaches and trainers have been working with me to strengthen them so my knees don’t fall when I get tired, hurting my form and leading to another back injury which I just recovered from. It’s so important even though I’m terrible about keeping up with strength training!
As for Boo, I’ve been thinking about that for awhile! It means she’s double the cuteness :)

I ate chocolate pudding after I got my wisdom teeth taken out and then got sick from the pain medication I was on, so for years I couldn’t eat chocolate pudding. Very sad!
Just got back from a glorious morning interval run, the birds were singing and the sun was shining. :)
I have added weight training to running and I can definitely feel a difference. I do Plie squats, lunges, and regular squats. I have also been doing calf raises. And then stretching is my biggest thing. I need to stretch and then hop on my foam roller and that has completely gotten rid of my IT band issues. Now I just need to work on my foot :( I hurt that while running over a week ago so I am very sad I cant run but I am cross training like a beast :)

Hip weakness was a huge issue for me and caused big IT band problems for me last year. Now that I’ve recovered, I try to keep hip exercises a part of my fitness because I know how important it is. I find a regular yoga practice to also be key in injury prevention. It’s great for keeping me strong and my hips open.

I never do hip exercises eek! But I have made a goal to start strength training again because I’ve been on a running plateau. I got food poisoning once from fried shrimp 6 years ago and still can’t eat fried shrimp at all and I rarely even order shrimp now. My absolute fav fruit is avocado. Second is cantaloupe.

Running too much too quick (after pregnancy) caused my latest injury. And also I think now the pure barre workout I was doing exasperated it.
My stomach could not do tomato sauce when I was pregnant and it was a long while before I could eat it again.
My #1 favorite fruit is raspberries.

Eating Doritos is how I figured out I was pregnant with my daughter. It was the first week back at school and every time I walked my students to the cafeteria and saw the Doritos bags I had to have or I was going to die! Then I would actually lick the cheese of of them (crazy right)! I mean I like Doritos but I don’ t LOVE them. This continued for a week and by Friday I put two and two together. Called my husband and told him to get a pregnancy test. I didn’t even have to wait three minutes before it was a positive.

My last injury was definitely because I didn’t give myself enough time to recover after a marathon and almost immediately started training again. Go figure.
Today is cross training. I’m rollerblading with Bungee and then doing a workout on the bike trainer!

My hips are extremely tight and it’s caused quite a few issues for me since I started running. I just HATE doing the stretches and strengthening even though I know it is important. I will say I have finally started to though and it’s made a huge difference.
I cannot eat red pasta sauce. There were some ugly experiences with it.

I totally do hip strengthening exercises! I had to DNF at the Chicago Marathon last year because of a hip flexor injury, and after going through a month and a half of physical therapy after that injury, I definitely learned my lesson. I actually attend yoga classes several times a week which have lots of poses that strengthen my hips, but I should get back to doing some of the exercises my PT had me doing in addition to yoga. Your quesadillas look so yummy! I think I could eat Mexican every night for dinner and not get bored.

My current injury was most likely due to poor running form — I’m a heel striker. I think my favorite fruit is watermelon. I don’t think that I have any food aversions, though I sometime over do it and then don’t want to eat something for a while. Brooke totally looks like Boo! She’s so cute!

I’ve been noticing some tightness in my right hamstring/IT band area so I’ve been stretching and foam rolling like a crazy person lately to avoid a legitimate injury. Fingers crossed.
Brooke definitely looks like Boo! Boo is one of my favorite Pixar characters of all time so Brooke is pretty cool in my book.
Deal! I finished a half marathon on Sunday (Vienna) with IT pain starting at 10k. Ugh. Totally preventable. More stretching, more pool running, more care of my body, or it is not going to let me keep running. (PS, THANK YOU for pool running! I just started and I totally love it! I listen to audio books to keep from drowning myself from the sheer boredom, but mixing it up with running and stretching is making a huge difference to recovery and my endurance.)
Just curious–what kind of setup do you use to listen to books when you pool run?

When I was younger I couldn’t eat pizza for a while because I got sick after eating it once. Now I LOVE pizza, so that didn’t last. Mangos and blackberries are my favorite fruits. In fact I’m eating blackberries as I type this.
Suffering with ITB issues also. Started do strengthening exercises, the Iron Strength workout on the Runner’s World website is a great routine that targets the hips and glutes as well as the core and upper body. Hard but worth it!
I think Brooke is far cuter than Boo!
The longer I run the more convinced I am of the importance of strength training and how interconnected everything is. You have a weak hamstring and everything pulls too much and boom, you have plantar fascitis. So strong hamstrings, strong glutes and hips are all incredibly important. I got over my ITB by focusing much more on glute work, and when running (especially up hills) using my glutes to power me, NOT my calves. When it niggles I foamroll like crazy and do some yoga stretches. For strength work, I like clamshells and my PT showed me one where you lie on your back, raise your bottom in the air and alternate leg extensions, concentrating on glutes. My PT also said while stretching is important, you have to know your own body and you can be over-stretched which is almost as bad as being too tight. She actually told me to cut the yoga (my hamstrings are way way too flexible) and go back to the gym! So everyone is different, and knowing your own body is so important.. good luck and love reading your updates!

I just struggled through my second hip injury! Banks for the reminder. My fave stretch for the hips is the figure 4. Along with hip strength, I’ve also found it really important to work on butt strength! Glute power.

Ahhh!!!! She totally looks like Boo!!!! So very very cute!!!! I got my injury from upping my miles to quickly and not doing any strength or stretching and when it started to hurt I just kept running (oh! such a bad idea!)
Once in high school I ate to many Recess peanut butter cups, got sick and have not had one since and I am 32!
I love pears and strawberries!….I pretty much just love fruit because I also love apples and banannas and in the summer LOVE watermelon and pineapple.
I am running but sadly since it hasn’t stopped raining for 2 blah days I am on the treadmill I think.

I actually had a horrible IT band injury pop up the week before I was supposed to run my first marathon. I was absolutely devastated when, the day before the race, I couldn’t even make it around the track one time without hobbling in pain. Needless to say, I did not make it to the start line. I spent the next six weeks in physical therapy, and I was amazed to learn that most knee and IT problems stem from hip issues. I also learned that women are more prone to these types of injuries because our joints and tendons are ‘looser,’ especially prior to and during menstruation. Nature’s brilliant way of allowing us to have babies; just not ideal for running!
When I was pregnant with my oldest, I was crazy hungry in the beginning. I went on a business trip right after I found out I was pregnant. Pretty much everything I ate that week, I did not want to eat for the rest of my pregnancy. We went to a local BBQ restaurant for lunch one day, and, after that, the thought of BBQ made me turn green.
Have to agree with Wendy. Fresh pineapple is the best! We ate ridiculous amounts of it when we were in Hawaii in January.
Today is a rest day. Running an 11-mile trail race on Saturday, so rest today, easy 4 tomorrow, mud & fun on Saturday!

Yes! During the second half of the menstrual cycle, your body makes a hormone called “relaxin” that slightly softens the ligaments.
Also, during pregnancy…. even higher levels of the hormone relaxin helps to loosen the ligaments of the pelvis so that it can widen during childbirth to allow passage of the baby. However, relaxin effects all of the ligaments in the body, and its effects continue for about 5-6 months after childbirth as well!

I have some knee issues and if I don’t get shoes when I need them I totally pay the price. However, I have a very weird attachment to my shoes! If I ran a race in them I hate to just give them, but by not giving them up I get injured! I know that sounds warped! Banana bread is one food that I can’t even look at. I have so many favorite fruits, mango, grapes, apples, oranges, pineapple, any berrie! Today is a running and biking day!

I go in waves on whether I do hip exercises or not. Perhaps I’ll start again. I ran 10 wet miles this morning. I came back drenched, like I got in the shower with my clothes and shoes on.
Because I’m a beginner, I basically am religious about two day of strength training a week, especially training for my first half-marathon. My hubs and I are on vacation now and the first thing I did after checking in was check out the weight room, ha!
I’d be running on the beach (I’m a trail-runner) but it’s a boutique resort so the beach isn’t long enough, but thanks to your treadmill post, I’m ready to do my runs on the terrific looking treadmills in the gym here.
Maybe because I’m still relatively new to distance running, I haven’t been injured yet – fingers crossed. Thanks for the great tips.

I used to eat waffles with jelly all the time as a little kid. However one morning that combo didn’t sit so well with me and, that was the end of that. My favorite fruits are all the summer fruits! Peaches and plums especially – oh cherries too!! Today I think I’m gonna do a light run and then some strength training.

I plan to run today! I’ve been running on the treadmill mainly lately, so today will be interesting since I’m venturing outside. I’m so glad I read this post–it’s a good reminder for me. My hips are aaaaalways sore and hurting, so I try to stretch them. I used to do clamshells often but have completely forgotten about them! Thanks for reminding me to start doing them again. My hips need some more attention.

I actually went through a phase where I couldn't stomach the thought of eating Skittles. They were my absolute favorite candy back in the day, and I think I just ate too many of them one time (or maybe it was a freak stomach bug?) because I ended up getting sick and yeah… me and Skittles broke up for a few years. Sad times.
I have chondromalacia in both my knees since I was a little kid (flat feet, born pigeon toed, and grew way to fast) When I ran in high school my knees were fine, but as an adult I’m struggling. Those knee straps help a ton, but as soon as I hit the 4mile mark in a run, they start hurting:( Lots of cross training…

I have been struggling with weak hips for the past couple of months. I’ve been doing a lot of stretching and strength training specifically targeting them and it has really helped.
I used to have Nutrigrain bars for breakfast every day in high school. I am going on 16ish years now of not being able to look at them because I had them too much.
Tonight I think I will go to the gym and do some intervals on the treadmill. I only have a couple of weeks left before my half!
I have yet to have joint issues just feet problems! Blisters, losing nails, and arch pain! My all time favorite is mango with pineapple sneaking behind in second (pineapple hurts my mouth if I eat too much, mango does not) and today is a rest day I think. May work in some core, we’ll see. I have a Tough Mudder on Saturday!

Today, I did some cross training…sorta. I did a walking treadmill workout with some serious inclines. ;-) Good stuff!
I have crappy hip/butt issues. I try to do hip strengthening stuff and just recently gave up on foam rolling my glutes when I wasn’t noticing even the slightest difference and did some reading on foam rolling delaying healing.
I ate way too many tortilla chips one day and got ill- unfortunately chips and salsa are the greatest food ever, so I think I stopped eating them for like- a day.

Brooke so cute in those “palm trees”! In the recent months I have tried getting in more strength training and I think I can tell a difference in my running performance. I started taking a pilates/yoga class and do strength training in my mommy workout group I am apart of. Today is a pilates kinda day!
I know that I get injured because of my tight hips/glutes/hip flexors. They are always sore. The only time I haven’t gotten injured while running a lot is when I was doing exercises like that and foam rolling an hour a day. And then after my marathon I was so burned out from spending so much time doing that stuff that I stopped and now I am injured. I am smart. I know.

I have to thank you for introducing us to cowboy quesadillas. It is now in our dinner rotation and everyone is our family loves them. Plus they are easy – win-win.
My first trimester with Evan was October and November. I made a lot of pumpkin flavored stuff and made a lot of cake pops (4yrs ago when they were cool) and it took me a loooong time before I could thin of pumpkin or cake and not want to throw up.
Cross trained this morning and I plan on eating my favorite fruit – strawberries – later today. Mmmmmm.

I wore a palm tree head on Tuesday because I wanted to wear a blue headband for Boston, and the only way it would stay on my thick, pixie cut hair (that was in desperate need of a haircut) was if I had a fountain ponytail. So I rocked that on Tuesday.
I’ve been doing some yoga and leg/hip exercises with weights to try and take some of the pressure off of my IT band. I can’t eat Hershey Kisses because when I was little, my grandparents bought my sister and I one of those 1 lb. Hershey Kisses and I got overzealous and threw up. So now, I don’t eat them. Favorite fruits are mangoes and strawberries :D I took today as a rest day… I’m sore, so I’m giving my body some time to recover.

There’s that moment when “pain in the butt” goes from metaphor to reality. I’ve experienced that moment many times. The hips are first and then the rear isn’t far behind. But, at least cantaloupe and pineapple ice season is come up!

I can see where people would tell you that about Brooke. She is a doll! I miss when my little girl was so small. It almost makes me want another child. Almost. :)

Today is a RUNNING day! I’m excited to get sweaty.
My last injury was caused by weak quads. I now work on them at least once a week (mostly 2-3 times per week). I somehow got food poisoning during a race (a half marathon) and couldn’t eat GU for quit some time (I’m still afraid). But I forced myself to eat it during my last half.

I completely think ALL of my running injuries can be traced back to weak hips and hamstrings. I had a trainer put together some hip exercises for me and I’d be happy to share if you like:) It has helped, that is if I consistently do them.

The last time I was injured it was my IT band (in both knees) so I definitely feel your pain! I try to do hip strengtheners but I have resistance bands so I will definitely be doing those exercises at night!

I also had an IT band injury from weak glues and hip flexors. My chiropractor inducted me to do monster walks with a theraband. I’ve been doing yoga and core strengthening as well.
Running 2-2.5 miles then Bootcamp this evening after work.
I recently had an ankle injury and started to see a Physical Therapist. She had me do a few exercises and told me that I had weak hips and glutes, I’ve been working on it for about two months now and WOW can I tell a difference! I’m faster, stronger, more stable, and (most importantly) injury free.
The wrong shoes and weak quads/hips. I do the hip machines at the gym.
Pringles. But I like them again.

I have knee problems, so I HAVE to do hip strengthening exercises. They make such an incredible difference. Clam shells are my #1, but I also like to do fire hydrants (like a dog peeing on a fire hydrant), which is also great for my glute/outer hip.
I love mangoes, but I studied abroad in South Africa where they were really prevalent and probably ate at least one a day…I’ve since cut back, ha. I also really like strawberries and cherries (except when I eat too many and they hurt my tummy!)
Hill repeats today and my 20 mile round trip bike commute.
Ha ha ha! When I read your questions I realized I stopped reading after you stopped with the cute baby pictures! Oops! I do care about injury prevention! I do! I haven’t had an injury *knock on wood* and I think I’m smart with my strength/rest/cross. Today I have 5 MONSTER MILES on the schedule. Scratch that 3, but I’m running 5.

Yes yes yes to focusing on strengthening other parts of our bodies to keep us up and running! I have web scouring runners world for knee strengthening exercises. I am done with preventable injuries!
Today was going to be cardio, but I think I may sub that out for some strength training/hip stretching/glute building ;)

I have yet to figure out how the heck I injured my rotator cuff last week while running since I really don’t lift enough weights at all (maybe the problem?)…You are right, we need to strength train more! My favorite fruit would be a nice big green apple. The last time I had a stomach virus I couldn’t eat meat or poultry and haven’t gone back since (how I became a vegetarian)…Back in college I couldn’t look at krispy kreme donuts after getting sick the morning after having one lol.
You’re right on about hip strengthening exercises – especially for women. I have a desk job so I sit for most of the date and I have a tendency to cross my legs and/or ankles which is also bad for your hips. I know that one of my hips is weaker than the other because of that. I’ve been doing clamshell/leg lift type exercises for a while but sometimes its easy to forget them!

I’ve been increasing strength training to be a stronger, injury free runner and I think adding some hip work is going to be my next goal!

I JUST did the clamshell workout yesterday!! :) It burns, but I love it! Also, Brooke is way cuter than Boo! And those cowboy quesadillas look yuuuummy!

I’ll agree with the hip strengthening, but for me personally is the hip flexibility too. I have to stretch my hip (flexors in particular) ALL the time. Nowadays it’s helped me prevent a lot of injuries I’ve had in the past.

My only real injury is shin splints, and they come and come. So I”m still trying to learn how to deal with those. Probably wouldn’t hurt me to make a habit out of hip strengthening exercises. Favorite fruit is probably banana! With mango and strawberries tied for second. But really I just love to throw a ton of fruit together, it just tastes better when you mix those fruity flavors!

I’ve recently started adding some weight training into my workouts and have noticed a lot of improvement in my running-induced aches and pains. I was especially surprised how week my hips were compared to the rest of my body! I’m definitely committed to strengthening my hips to avoid injury! Have you eaten Ataulfo mangos? (They’re also called champagne mangos). They don’t look as pretty on the outside, but they’re heavenly on the inside. You can eat them with a spoon!! (I buy,inept whole foods)
I need to learn to stretch and actually take real rest days. I know and can feel the damage that is happening to my calf’s, knees and ankles.
So that is why Brooke is so cute – she’s a real life Boo! My Mum used to put my hair in a fountain ponytail when I was little too, we called it a mushroom where I come from – probably because there were no palm trees!
I had medial knee pain last year and hip exercises really helped. My physio put me on a programme of clams with a resistance band, single leg bridges and wall sits for the quads, working on one side first to correct a muscle imbalance. Plus he stuck his elbow into my tight R hip flexor real hard to release it – ouch! But he introduced me to foam rolling so I’ll forgive him! I found it really helpful to keep the pelvis level and core engaged while doing all the exercises, for symmetry.
Totally agree with the hip stuff…as I sit in the waiting room waiting to see my physical therapist so we can work on my weak hips!
And yes Brooke totally looks like Boo! Adorable!
My sister used to do my hair like that every day. We called it “Mrs. Sprouty” :). And my husband and I recently rediscovered our love for quesadillas- I could PROBABLY eat one every day!! MMM

I always do hip strengthening exercises with my patients as they do theirs. Hip abduction with external rotation in sidelying, clams and reverse clams for external and internal rotation are great too. I absolutely love berries – perfectly ripe strawberries are my favorite. Surprisingly I hate strawberry shakes since I got sick from one once as a kid. I ran 3 today on the treadmill….
My last injury was from the one and only marathon I did; never again! It took me two years to get over the injury and with the help of lots of lunging stretches for my quads, hip flexors and glutes I’m all better!

I’ve luckily never had a major injury… last minor injury was twisting my ankle trying to do some side plank on a Jillian Michaels video. :-(
I cant drink Pepsi, because I remember getting nauseated and sick after drinking it as a child with the flu… but Coke is fine (go figure ?)
Some of the best fruit I had recently was strawberries picked at peak ripeness off the bushes at a “U pick” strawberry farm! The sweetness was incredible compared to grocery store fruit!
I also love mangos, pineapples, kiwis…. um, raspberries, oranges… just about all fruits!

I have been dealing with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome for months and have tried to get back into running after periods of rest/PT and end up right back at square 1 (also because I do too much too fast). I have started doing more hip and glute stretches and strengthning exercises to help. Thanks for the article that is very helpful!
I hope to be back running in the next month or so…I am not a patient person so this has been hard! But I want to do the recovery right this time so I don’t continue with the same cycle. Today its back to the elliptical.

I’m still dealing with my shin splints, and it’s because I stopped weight lifting! Trained for my first marathon while doing some heavy weight lifting with a trainer, then my trainer closed her gym, and I was lost! I wasn’t cross training or lifting anymore and that’s when I started getting shin splints, that go worse the more muscle I lost! So thanks for the reminder to get back at it!
I got sick after eating Polish Sausage, and haven’t eaten it since, and that was one of my favorite meals, with scalloped potatoes!
I’ve NEVER eaten a mango!! I love all fruit and try not to discriminate, but strawberries will always be my favorite!
Since it down poured all day, I cross trained at the gym on the rowing machine, and then ran 34 laps on the indoor track (that’s only 3miles, and all I could handle of circles!)

I went to a physician therapist at a running rehab clinic and I had weak hips, calves, and core. One of the things we did for my hips is to put a theraband around my feet, bend my kness slightly and lean forward (kind of like the beginning of a squat) and take 20 steps to the right and to the left. Then repeat. I did this every day for two months and it definitely helped! Good luck with the strengthening.
Today is a rest day for me and I love mangoes so much! Janae, I was wondering if you would be willing to do a mini-review of the Ravenna 4s. I’m curious as to what you think of them, particularly after running on the Pureflow 2s for a while.

We were just talking about this is my Biomechanics & physiology class. Along with your hip flexors, you really want to work your quads and hamstrings. This will help prevent injury. Another piece of research is if you are running on the same side of the rode for too long, the way the slant in the road is can cause pain in your IT band. Therefore, switching the side of the road or sidewalk, who would of thought!! haha!

I think probably weak hips or weak core caused my last injury. Doc said I had either a labral tear or just bad hip tendonitis. I’m doing lots of hip strengthening exercises now(after a steroid shot to get the inflammation down first) along with core work. My favorite is the monster walk. You tie a resistance band around calves and walk forward 10 steps then backward ten steps. It really works on your hips. Also I do straight leg raises which are awesome for hips and quads. Also I love lateral step-ups. So far this has been working and no more pain when running!! My favorite fruit is either apples or mango. I’m resting today but 4 miles of speedwork tomorrow!!!!!! When I was 10 my mom went into labor with my 3rd younger sibling. I already had 2 brothers and was hoping for a sister. While waiting I ate an entire can of cheese Pringles. My dad called to say I had a 3rd lil bro and I promptly puked. I haven’t eaten a cheese Pringle since. The can gives me goose bumps.
I badly need to do more hip exercises especially cuz I’m pregnant and they r widening as we speak.
I’ve been doing hip exercises for the past couple months because I found that weak hips could cause knee pain…
Since I’ve been dealing with knee pain now for oh… almost a year… I decided to start doing them…
Also, I just realized that my hips have been semi-collapsing when I run (if that makes sense) So I’ve been running slower and less miles and trying to focus on my form.
This past Wednesday after I did all that, my hips were super duper sore… so I’m hoping that fixing the hips will fix my knee problem…
Also because I’m cheap and don’t want to pay a doctor to figure it out for me .. or just plain old stubborn ;)

I must have missed this post while I was at work, but you are so right – I have been dealing witha chronic pelvic injury and doing hip strengthening is the only way to keep it in check. I also added in the 8-min buns a few weeks ago, although I had to stop once I got the stress fracture diagnosis (kneeling puts all my weight on the hurt bone). I can do those exercises in just a few minutes so I am less tempted to skip.
I started doing a hip flexor workout and an IT band workout once a week. A few times I’ve missed these, and it was obvious! It’s amazing how much these exercises really affect you during running and day-to-day. I’m a convert!
Last year I had a badly strained hip flexor & I’ve been doing these clam shell workouts now. I’m getting over tendonitis in my ankle now so I haven’t ran in 3 weeks & it’s killing me!
