You’ve been there before, an exception and something else for you to make ASAP!

Good morning!!  I swear I have a lot more on my brain lately than usual to tell you about so let’s get started.

My Tuesday morning run was a rainy one.  It was the perfect amount of rain though, not enough to leave you drenched and just enough to cool you off.  I did 6 miles @ 9:25 average and found a horse to take a selfie with (you might be able to tell… I miss my running partners a lot;).

Something I was thinking about a lot that I heard on the Man Bun Podcast was from Jenny Simpson.  She sounds like such an optimistic person and there were two things that I loved that she said:

1.  You’ve been there before… why can’t you do it again.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about this idea during a run and that is what got me through some really tough miles.  I think looking over your training journal right before a race is one of the best things you can do because you can remind yourself of some of the really tough workouts that you’ve done and how you got through them alive and you can do it again when it gets tough. I think when we are really feeling awful during a race/workout that it is a big help to remember that you’ve been in this position before (where you desperately wanted to quit) but you didn’t.  You can do hard things, you’ve proved that to yourself and you are just going to go ahead and keep proving that to yourself.

2.  Remember that you signed up for this knowing there would be highs and lows.  I love that during the lows I can think about the fact that I knew going into training/running that there were going to lows.  We can’t just expect to have highs only along the way, the lows are what make those highs (new personal records, distance records, killing a speed workout, a good race, endorphin filled run etc) feel even more amazing.  You agreed to the lows when you signed up for running/training for a race… so get through them and stay strong!

After my run I did some strength training!  Becky (she doesn’t know me but I’ll just refer to her as if we are friends;) posts AWESOME workouts that are great for pregnancy.  I did this workout of hers (Minus the reverse commandos… my arms strength is not quite there).  It was a killer one and I repeated to myself  ‘the more I do of this kind of stuff, the longer I’ll be able to run’ whenever my legs/glutes felt like they were going to fall off.

Brooke got a chance to run in the rain too!

IMG 1131

Brooke’s sweet empathetic face in the background.  I got to hang out at the dentist’s office for a few hours yesterday.  I told you last year about how I had a tumor in my mouth (it was a bit bigger than a marble) right along my teeth/gums when I was in high school.  The good news was that it wasn’t cancerous and also that a new one has never come back but the bad news (which they warned me of) was that the teeth that were touching it would be really effected by having all of those gums removed (I had to have an implant because of it last year).  Fun stuff.  The last few weeks it’s been hurting pretty bad but my dentist took care of it.  No more pain.   Gotta love having a numb mouth for a few hours.

IMG 1159

These two came along:)

IMG 1133

And afterwards we went to my parent’s house to visit with them for a few minutes.

IMG 1148

My mouth was still numb for lunch but afterwards I had my dream team lunch… plus another pancake.

IMG 1162

This picture was from Sunday morning… Brooke has also jumped on the Bisquick daily train with me and I’m loving that:)

PS my mom sent me a text yesterday that said, ‘Just made a huge pancake for dinner.  Thanks for the craving!’

IMG 0946

While I was working I heard Brooke behind me panting and turned around to find Brooke with her face painted.  Andrew is sure creative:)

IMG 1164

After reading all of your comments yesterday about the Instant Pot (we are going to go for it!!) a lot of you talked about the delicious soups that you made in them… and that made me crave soup all day long. I made this Creamy Roasted Cauliflower Chowder and I’ll be making it again and again.  We all loved it, seriously try it.  Brooke even really liked it (she had a little cauliflower but picked around the rest of the cauliflower chunks).

IMG 1167

Also, the recipe calls for almond milk instead of cream… even though it tastes super creamy!  Don’t mind our garlic bread with a lb of butter on it… it was so good.

IMG 1171

After dinner we went on a walk for a bit (thank you cooler temperatures for making this enjoyable;).

IMG 1178

Beretta enjoyed her favorite activity ever… chasing the baseball.

IMG 1180

And Brooke practiced her monkey bar skills.

IMG 1184

After that there were some people in our neighborhood handing out FREE cookies so we stopped by there.  They were sure pretty but I chose to have more garlic bread instead once we got home.  My sweet teeth have transformed magically to savory teeth (one exception: pancakes with syrup).

IMG 1186

PS I ran to the store yesterday for a second and saw these… deep fried twinkies!! I’ve had one twinkie in my life and they aren’t my thing… I can’t even imagine what these taste like.

IMG 1166

Ever had anything deep fried before?  What’s the most interesting thing that you’ve seen at the grocery store lately?

Tell me about your last running HIGH and/or running LOW!!

Do you have a sweet tooth?  Or not so much?

Favorite type of soup?

I completely agree. It’s always important to remember that you did sign up for it. That’s why I love running though. Every single thing you do has both highs and lows. Running highs include PRs and memories associated with good runs. Lows include injuries, months of hard work only to not yield the results you wanted!

Oh yes yes yes… that low of hard work on paying off on race day is ROUGH. I hope you are having a great day Hollie. I always love hearing from you!

My running high was Monday actually. I had 400 m repeats on the schedule and did them on a track and went faster than what I was scheduled for (oops!) but felt awesome afterwards! Granted I had a tiny bit of knee pain so that was a low but I’ve been icing and stretching so hopefully it won’t hurt today on my run.
My favorite soup is ham and potato soup that my dad makes. It’s SO good. I can’t wait for it to get colder out so I can make that.
Have a great day Janae!

WAY TO GO ON YOUR 400m workout Maureen!!! Those are rough:) I hope the knee pain doesn’t last long! Ham and potato soup = sounds heavenly! THANK YOU and you too!

Oh man, your reminder about having both highs and lows really hit me! I’m coming off a low with last week’s long run — I planned for 9 miles, but only made it 4 (+ 1 walking home) because the humidity was just way too much to handle :/ It was 100% humidity at 6 a.m. on Sunday — so uncalled for haha. So now that that is out of the way, I can get ready for some highs coming my way, right? I feel confident in my ability to complete that distance, and I know I did everything right to prepare for it, so now it’s just a matter of all the circumstances falling into place! I still have 8.5 weeks until my half, so I’m golden!

I totally have a savory tooth. I’ll take savory over sweet any day! I wonder if that will flip for me whenever I start having kids :)

I am so sorry about your long run last week Joanne… that is tough! I can’t even imagine running in 100% humidity so you made it 4 miles further than I would have. The highs are right around the corner now for you! I’m so excited for your half!! That will be interesting to see if your preferences flip once you have kids! Enjoy the rest of your day!

I have a major sweet tooth but not when I was pregnant! so I totally relate. it was so weird for me but slowly I returned to my sweet tooth self when my son was born. I don’t love the deep fried desserts but I remember when the trend started years ago. I had the deep fried Oreos – too fried for me!

AHHHHH didn’t you miss sugar?!? I sure do! So glad it returned! Thanks Meredith and I hope your Wednesday is going great!

Andrew painting Brooke’s face is the cutest thing! What a good dad.

The only thing that I’ve ever had that was deep fried was an oreo. When I used to work at Red Robin my boss liked to make them all the time (disgusting) and I only tried a bite once and all I could taste was the grease. I thought it was so gross.

I do not have a sweet tooth at ALL. I would prefer a serving of chips or something salty or a glass of wine to dessert any day. I do really like sour candies once in a while though. I kind of wish I liked dessert more though…I get teased for it all the time. And with my wedding coming up, we are trying to come up with some desserts that I will actually eat haha. I told my mom we should just have bowls of sour skittles everywhere, and she didn’t think that was too funny ;)

My favorite soup is the chicken noodle from Costco – it is unreal! Have you had it?!

He sure is! Oh we LOVE Red Robin… didn’t you tell me once that you dressed up like the mascot once or am I making that up? That is so interesting that you don’t have a sweet tooth! I totally get it now:) I think the sour skittles idea is brilliant:) I HAVE HAD that one from Costco, it is amazing!! Enjoy your day Allison and I am excited for your wedding!!

Haha yeah….I was definitely the mascot at Red Robin. Not the proudest time in my life. And thank you – I am so excited for my wedding, too!

Brooke’s bun on top of her head is the best thing ever! I wish I could get mine to look that good!

I’m not a huge fan of fried food but I LOVE SUGAR ALL DAY, EVERYDAY.

HAHAH we do those buns pretty much every day:) Thanks Laura and I hope you have some great sugar today!

Yep, I definitely have a sweet tooth too. That cookie looks delicious by the way!

My favorite kind of soup would probably be chicken noodle with a ton of veggies in it.

I need to make some chicken noodle soup asap! I hope you are having a fabulous day Fiona!

Good Morning Janae! I haven’t talked with you in forever because I just got back from vacation. But I’m back. I know you missed me. No worries now ;)
Alright. So I live in Wisconsin (where we deep fry EVERYTHING) and our state fair is just that. Fried food everywhere. Things you didn’t even know could be fried! Some of the crazy ones that I’ve seen at our fair are: fried butter, fried bacon-wrapped sausage, fried grilled cheese bites and so many more. Our fair is at the beginning on August so I’ll fill you in on the new ones!

I definitely have a sweet tooth but I feel like as I’m getting older (23, but you know what I mean) I am developing more of a savory tooth. I sometimes prefer chips over chocolate. Scary but I’m embracing it :)

And last. My favorite ‘soup’ is your friend, Megan’s, creamy chicken chili stuff! I make it at least twice a month. I am obsessed with it! Thanks Megan for the recipe :)

Okay bye now! Have a great day! Looking forward to another baby update post ;)

So good to hear from you Ashley! I did miss you but I’m so glad you got to vacation! FRIED BUTTER!?!? That is intense! Okay, yes… I am SO happy you love that soup. It is literally the best! Another baby update is going up this afternoon!

Yum! Pancakes and peaches are one of my favorites!!

Running high – feeling stronger on trails lately. Running low – still feeling like I’m just not quite running as much as I’d like to.

That is a real good feeling—> strong on the trails! Keep remembering that feeling and go have some pancakes and peaches asap Aimee!

Thank you for sharing that instagram account! I’ve been looking for workouts I can do at home because it’s so stinking hot but am always worried if they’re safe for pregnancy. I’m following her now.
I have a major sweet tooth but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t touch a deep fried twinkie. I’ve had a deep fried oreo before but prefer them plain or covered in chocolate. I’m probably going to have to hunt down a cookie and some frosting now after seeing your picture.

YES, she has awesome workouts!! Let me know which ones you try! Go get a cookie right this second:) I hope you are feeling well today Kaci!

I just had 2 weeks of bad training because I just didn’t prioritize running so I didn’t have time to fit it in. And it showed yesterday when I went out for my run. I’ll get it back, but it’s really frustrating…we all know that feeling.

YOU WILL GET back to it!!! It is beyond frustrating but you are going to get back to your good ol’ self in no time! Keep me updated Jenny!

I love rainy runs like that! And love the selfie with the horse haha ;)

That cauliflower chowder looks amazing. I’ve been craving soup lately because the temperatures in Boston have dropped a lot too… makes me excited for fall! My favorite soup is probably a vegetable broth-based soup with tons and tons of veggies thrown in.

The temperatures in Boston have dropped?! TIME FOR SOUP for you… share any good recipes that you find with me please! Enjoy your Wednesday Marina!

That soup looks delish! Going to have to try it out! And bummer about the dentist and achey teeth. Kind of the worst when you’re pregnant.

Weirdest store item lately: Twinkie ice cream.
Running high/low: currently being treated for pretty severe anemia and I can’t exercise AT ALL (get light headed and dizzy, vision starts to black out…blah). So, I haven’t run or even walked in a couple months. ?
Sweet/savory: sweet!
Soup: Black Bean soup. My family loves it and super easy recipe. In fact, my pickiest eater requests it often. ?

Have a great Wednesday, Janae!

Let me know if you try it Melly!! Thank you! Twinkie ice cream!?!? I am SO beyond sorry about your severe anemia, that is not okay! Please keep me updated with how you are doing. Thinking about you! I’m going to have to try some Black Bean soup asap, that sounds amazing!

You are a sweetheart! ❤️ Thank you. It’s hard when our bodies aren’t able to do what we want them to.

Let me know if you want the recipe and I will email it to you. I can’t find it online right now, but I can take snapshot from my cookbook. And as a bonus, it only takes 30 minutes to pull together. ??

Also, because the baby NEEDS these:
Trust me. You and Baby Baron will be soooo happy! ?

AHHH SEND ME THE RECIPE and I totally need those biscuits RIGHT THIS SECOND. Thank you so much Michelle! I can’t wait!

I am so making that soup!!! Looks amazing!

I wonder if Brooke would like it better if the soup were blended (like in a blender) , so that the cauliflower was just blended into the creamy soup, and not chunky? (Sometimes kids have issues with textures, but pureed veggies are ok with them).

Also, you need to get a Bisquick sponsorship!! Because now you are making me crave Bisquick stuff too!

Let me know what you think of the soup if you make it! Okay, you are seriously brilliant. I didn’t even think of blending hers up. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Hahaha I need to email Bisquick asap, we would make the perfect fit! Thanks Melly!

We tried deep fried Twinkies at Santa Cruz once. They were SO good! I don’t like regular Twinkies, but I guess it’s true – you can make anything good with batter and hot oil ;)

I had some really great runs on Oahu. I did a 10 miler in the rain that would probably be consider high and how.

I inherited my sweet tooth from my Mom and she had a HUGE sweet tooth!

I don’t think I have a favorite soup – I like just about any kind. Here’s one the kids might like – Pizza Soup:
1 jar (8 oz) of pizza sauce
3 empty jars full of water
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1 cup baby tomatoes, cut in quarters (or 1 can diced tomatoes, drained)
1 Italian sausage, cooked
1 cup sliced pepperoni, sliced in quarters
Italian spices such as basil, garlic, and oregano to taste
1/2 cup of dried whole wheat pasta
shredded mozzarella cheese (to add later)

Wash and prepare veggies. Dump them into the crockpot.
Cut up the sausage into small pieces–I sliced, then cut the pieces in fourths. Add to crockpot.
Cut up the pepperoni, add it, too.
Add spices. Pour in the pizza sauce, and follow with three empty jars of water.
Cover and cook on low for 7-9 hours. Everything in this is already cooked, so you are really only heating through and allowing the flavors to meld.
Thirty minutes before serving, add the dry pasta, and turn to high. When I added the pasta, it didn’t seem like enough, but after it cooked it was plenty.
Garnish/top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

PIZZA SOUP… you just made the kid’s lives! That sounds amazing! Way to go on your 10 miler in the rain… that is awesome! I want to run with you in Oahu!!! I bet the humidity is the same. Thank you Kathy for the recipe, you are the best cook!

I have a huge sweet tooth, but am not usually into fried stuff, even if it’s dessert. Churros, of course, are a big exception to this– sooooooo good!

When I lived in the UK for a year, the fish and chip shops all sold deep friend Mars bars (kind like Milky Ways). I was never brave enough to try one, but I have had a deep fried Oreo. It was kind of gross, actually. The thing I like about Oreos is that the cookie part is crunchy and the filling is creamy, but deep frying them makes the whole thing soft. ew.

I don’t understand deep fried Twinkies as a cold grocery item. Isn’t the point of deep frying that it will be hot and crispy straight outta the fryer?

I could not agree more with you… CHURROS ARE AN EXCEPTION!!! Oh I LOVE fish and chips, that is so cool you lived int eh UK for a year! A deep fried Mars bar though… hmmmm! Yep, I don’t understand the twinkies either, so weird!! I hope you are having a great day Emily.

I saw those twinkies!! Gross… thank you!! I do have a sweet tooth-mostly for brownies and sour candy and twizzlers. My run high was today where I made it 8 miles!!!! Longest run in 3 weeks because of the insane heat and humidity. It was still 80% humidity but i beat the heat and ran in the morning something I hardly ever do! Favorite soup is the chicken noodle from panera!

Yeah, I couldn’t imagine eating them! Those three things are some of the best to have a sweet tooth for (and donuts)! 80% humidity… way to go getting in those 8 miles before the heat! I hope you get to Panera soon:) Thanks Loribeth!

I tried a deep fried Mars bar before. Most interesting thing I have seen at the grocery store lately is a strawberry and cream licorice. I have seen more interesting foods but can’t remember them off the top of my head. I definitely have a sweet tooth.

Running high = running a long run of almost 40km by myself on roads and trails on Monday. Low – running again the next day to get in back to back runs :P.

Favourite soup: clam chowder – I had this in a sour dough bowl in San Francisco with a gf a few years back.

Strawberry and cream licorice… that sounds interesting. I might love that once I have my sweet tooth back! Huge congrats Kristine on your 40km on Monday! THAT IS AWESOME…. I can’t even imagine running the next day! Now I am craving clam chowder in a huge sour dough bread bowl:) Enjoy your Wednesday Kristine!!

This has nothing to do with this post, but have you been able to try out the invisibobble hair rings yet?? I’d love to hear what you think of them when you do! I really need an option that won’t cause breakage.

TARA!!! YES… I just tried them out and they are PERFECT for around the house, going around town BUT they didn’t work while I was running. My hair fell out pretty much immediately (luckily I brought my other bands to use for the run just in case). They are great for the rest of the day though IMO or maybe my hair is too thick! I hope you have a great day!

Yikes I’m sorry to hear about all the trouble with your teeth! My front two teeth are implants and I love them…no sensitivity, no staining, and they are super durable.
My running high was yesterday – 5 miles without stopping at 8:40 overall pace! I feel like I’m finally back in my running groove and it’s the best feeling ever!
Favorite soup is panera’s broccoli cheddar! I’ve tried several “copycat” recipes and nothing ever comes close to the real thing ;)
Have a great day Janae!

That is awesome about your front teeth… so glad that worked out so well for you Erinn! WAY TO GO on your 5 miles without stopping, that is awesome! WE NEED a Panera here… that soup sounds amazing. Thank you and I hope you have a great day too!

That’s great advice- thanks Janae!!!
It’s very very hot and humid here in Nice (France) at the moment so I have to dig deep in every single run! (Even at 6 am it’s 26 degrees at 83% humidity)
