My Sister’s KITCHEN REMODEL (it is amazing)!!!!

I am so excited to finally be able to do this post.  Over these last few months my husband and I have been gutting and building a brand new kitchen.  Honestly looking back now I don’t know what we were thinking.  Going without a kitchen for a few months with five kids is hard.  Doing the remodel ourselves while taking care of five kids, two of which are toddlers, is insane!

Post Renovation picture to show that somehow we all lived through it :)

This all started because of my bad back.  While having to lay down more than I have ever wanted to, trying to recover from back surgery and also being pregnant with my fifth, I watched a lot of the show “Fixer Upper”.  I don’t know if you guys have watched this show, but it is basically my favorite show ever!  After watching every single episode, I pretty much thought I was Joanna Gaines and capable of any home renovation. :)  I know….completely crazy!  So I started trying to figure out how I could remodel my kitchen and do it on a very limited budget.

So after scouring the classifieds trying to find anything I could use for my kitchen I came across these….

IMG 1761

A local cabinet shop was selling these cabinet doors for five dollars a door!  Apparently they were the wrong shade of white for their customer….well they were perfect for me!  So I bought them all and designed a whole kitchen around them :)  After several months of planning and acquiring some amazing deals for tools, appliances, etc., through our local classifieds we were ready for demo!

IMG 1751

We gave away or sold everything in our kitchen :)

IMG 1696

Let me warn you here.  If you have never done a major kitchen renovation before, like we hadn’t, you will go through a huge spectrum of emotions during this time.  At first, during the demo process I was euphoric.  I was so excited to officially be starting on my new kitchen.  Shortly after demo was over, the overwhelming feeling of panic set in.  Question’s like: “What in the world have I done?”  “I don’t know how to build a kitchen!” and “ It’s the end of the school year which means an over abundance of assemblies, programs, concerts, and homework.  My three oldest kids are on four different sports teams, one of which I am helping coach, and my youngest two need constant supervision so they don’t kill each other and I just willingly destroyed my kitchen!?!?!?” all start setting in.

IMG 1685 IMG 1736

Then after starting the work of rebuilding, depression sets in.  You realize it’s nothing like they portray it on tv.  You don’t have a behind the scenes crew helping you.  In fact, the munchkin crew you do have with you 24 hours a day seem to thwart all progress you try to make.  It is more work than you ever imagined.

IMG 2155

So what do you do?  It’s like all hard things in life.  You resist the urge to curl up in the fetal position and instead get to work.  You beg your bother-in-law who has experience in making cabinets from scratch to come help you for a few days to get you started making yours.

IMG 1758

You watch a ton of YouTube videos to learn the tricks of the trade.  You work through the night while your kids are sleeping so you can actually get something done.  Then something magical happens.  As the days and weeks go by you start seeing progress and feeling more confident in your abilities.  You start having hope that you can do it.

IMG 1821 IMG 1823 IMG 1859

Then comes the best stage of all….Finishing!  Looking over the results and realizing that you did that, is an amazing feeling.  And finally getting some sleep….that’s an amazing feeling too ;)

If you’re like me and love home renovations…. here is a video going into a little more detail on how we stuck to a very limited budget.

There ya have it!!! Thanks for having me today!  Now I just need to convince my husband to keep doing a bunch of remodels with me:)

Ever done any renovations?  Tell me about it!!

Question from Janae… Who thinks my sister should start doing this professionally and probably have her own show on HGTV too?

We did our kitchen over several years ago – before kids – and I have no idea how you managed a brood and all that work! It’s absolutely gorgeous!! Nice work.

Wowza! This is so impressive! I used to think I was somewhat handy by being able to put together furniture from IKEA. But this, this is incredible! I’ve never watched HGTV (not really my thing), but I’m pretty sure you should be on there.

By the way, your hair always looks SO GOOD, even in the pics while you are working on your kitchen!!

A.MAZE.ING. This is fabulous! I like how you had your son pose in the same spot for the before and after photo! And that was an old stove! Crazy! It all looks so nice:)

I love Fixer Upper so much, and also Say Yes to the Dress, and any of the House Hunters or Beachfront Bargain Hunt type shows!

My running goal for this week is to get out there even in the heat…………….so hot and humid here……….ugh!

Oh my wooooooooooooooooooord! They did such a wonderful job! She’s SO SWEET to give all of the deets on how she did everything. I’d be too tired after all of that to explain how and why, haha.

Favorite HGTV show = “Property Brothers”!

Running goals this week = Staying true to a post-injury recovery and not go overboard (keeping to that 10% rule is tough).

Reply

Un-FREAKIN-believable!!! Wow. You should send this into HGTV. I am serious! Just amazing. I cannot believe you did that all yourself!! What skills and hard work and perseverance! (And, Sissy, YOUR HAIR! Gorgeous!)

Beautiful job!!!! I’m amazed and inspired!

WOW! I am super impressed. This renovation is beautiful and to know that you did it all yourselves is such a fabulous accomplishment. I bet it makes you even happier being in that kitchen now, not only because it’s so beautiful, but because YOU DID IT! :) Congratulations on a job so well done!

Reply

WOW!!! The kitchen looks lovely!! You should be so proud of yourselves — I cringe when people pay out of the nose for remodeling projects. It truly is hard work, but it’s so much more cost-effective to DIY. Congrats :)

Reply

Hi, just wondering if you could share where you found the plans for the table or at least the dimensions for it? I would love to replicate it for my family, its perfect!
Thanks

Reply

Beautiful job! I can’t believe you built your own cabinets- you’re brave and talented. I think you made the perfect splurge on the granite – it really takes the kitchen to a new level. I like the pop of color to really be a statement piece in your kitchen. Congratulations on finishing your project!

Reply

Love, love, love it! I’ve watch way too much Fixer Upper too and have started doing all kinds of projects around the house. I’ve painted about 80% of my house in the last 3 months and have been painting so many things white :) I really want to paint our kitchen cabinets white, but I haven’t convinced my hubby yet. We have a very small kitchen and I think it would really brighten it up. I love your tile back splash, that is exactly what I want to do in ours too and a new counter top. Such a fun post. We also have two little and I definitely have to get creative to get anything done :)

Reply

So beautiful!! I could never do it myself, even with no kids haha.
Can you five more details on the table?? That I think I can do!

Reply

Nice job! My husband and I are in the home stretch of finishing our renovation. We contracted a large addition to the house last year and then this year we gutted the entire original structure (1000sqft) and rebuild the house literally from the foundation up. Poured new footers, actually raise a portion of the house to get it back to level, new subfloor, all new interior walls, widened up a load bearing wall, installed one of the giant wood beams you see on all the shows haha, laid new hard wood, laid tile, added a dog shower in the mudroom, removed exterior doors, added a window, added a new exterior door, moved cabinets, redid all the electrical in the house, and updated a lot of plumbing. To say it has been a marathon is an understatement. Nice job managing the kitchen with kiddos, we have none right now, just two dogs that are annoyed with the lack of attention they have gotten this year!

Her kitchen is amazing! She has done Chip and Joanna proud! I am so jealous of the shiplap!

this is just so impressive!!! there are no words from me to describe how very impressed I am, not only because I am the opposite of handy but because you tackled this project with 5 kids and it came out amazing!!

Reply

AMAZING!!! I am so impressed! Amazing doesn’t even begin to express how I feel about this kitchen. I am so inspired!! I love everything about it. We have a mostly original kitchen from 1993 with all of the 90s bells and whistles (white floor tile, oak cabinets, forest green wallpaper, black appliances). I’m sure it was so hip in 1993 but not so much now! I’m looking at your post and thinking “we could do that!”
We have done a few minor renos like laying tile, laying hardwood floors, starting to do drywall for the first time. Nothing like that though.
I love Fixer Upper and I totally agree that you should have your own show!

Reply

I LOVE her new kitchen! I cannot wait until the day I has pretty countertops and fresh white cabinets. Congrats to your sis and her family! The kitchen is probably my favorite room in the house. So much love and food.

Reply

Your sister did an amazing job – the kitchen looks gorgeous. What a difference from the before photos!

My favorite show on HGTV is definitely House Hunters – especially the international one. I love seeing what houses look like in different parts of the world.

Reply

That looks incredible!!!

My husband and I bought a foreclosure last May and have spent the last year+ remodeling the entire thing. (It was horrendous!) Completely new bathrooms, kitchen, new paint for everything!! Totally feel your pain of the process, but the finished product is always worth it :)

Reply

That looks amazing!!! I’m seriously impressed, great job! Love that you did it on a budget too.

That is seriously amazing! It turned out so good!

LOVE this!!! great post and what an amazing kitchen remodel- can you share more details on the name of the granite color?? It looks perfect and amazing for a condo I am re-doing that has white cabinets, too!!

So totally looks like you are Joanna! :) Love everything… and the open shelves/shiplap. Can’t believe you built that all around some doors.. how fun!!!

Reply

The remodel is gorgeous! You did a fabulous job and even better on a small budget! I live in Waco and friends who have been on the show. Thank you for sharing! We built our house and a lot of our selections were based on what I liked from Joanna’s work on the show.

Wow!!! That transformation is amazing!!! I LOVE the shelves and your kitchen table!

Wowee Wow WOW!! Y’all did an amazing job! I love everything! You definitely have the talent and skills to do this professionally.
My favorite HGTV shows are Property Brothers and Flip or Flop.
I’ll be happy if I can do all my workouts this week without dying :) It’s pretty hot here in TX. It’s a good thing I have friends to run with. I couldn’t do it without them.

Looking forward to your next post! Maybe you can do it more often now that the kitchen it finished lol

BEAUTIFUL job! I am just floored at your “Can do” attitude and that you guys did all of this yourselves. I’m sure you will enjoy every minute in your new kitchen and create so many great memories there! Love it!

Reply

THIS IS AMAZING! Oh my goodness – I have never been more inspired to start remodeling my condo. To be honest, I never think things like Fixer Upper can be real in real-life, but to see you do this to your kitchen on a budget, with 5 kids, and while still doing your normal life is so inspiration and wonderful. You did the best job! It is gorgeous.

Reply

I can see the influence of Joanna Gaines in the kitchen, it’s so beautiful. I especially love the granite. Isn’t it amazing how inexpensive but impactful the tile is? Great job!!

Reply

Well that’s just beautiful.

Reply

Just WOW! What a beautiful kitchen! You did an amazing job. Now enjoy. :D

Reply

You did such an amazing job!! We’ve gone without a kitchen too but before kids (I can’t even imagine doing it with little ones! You’re a rock star!!) I love the countertops, I think that was a good decision. When I have to spend more than I want to I think about how long the ‘whatever’ will last and try to divide the cost into that time frame to help me put it into perspective. The granite you chose is super classic and will last forever so the cost is really not bad if you look at it that way :) Again outstanding work I can see why Janae has been so proud and excited to have you share with us!

Reply

Looks amazing! And it’s incredible you did that yourself! We did a kitchen reno years ago in our last house that ended up being a bigger deal and harder experience than we expected. So I applaud you but I also related to the range of emotions and late night working to get things done. But once it’s finished, it’s SO satisfying. Thanks for sharing!

Reply

FREAKING INSANE! It looks so amazing! I would have been impressed if these renovations were done by a professional, but to know that you guys did it all yourself is so crazy awesome. I know some people get a ‘high’ from accomplishing such tasks. If you become a junky and need to get your next ‘fix’ I know of a kitchen in Lehi that needs a serious update ;)

Reply

I am seriously amazed! It looks beautiful and I can’t imagine doing that, and especially with five children. So impressive!

WOW. That is incredibly impressive. It looks absolutely beautiful and so professional! Well done.

Wow, that looks amazing!! I love it!

My mom once renovated her kitchen all on her own. We helped with the demolition (that was fun) but she did everything, tiling, backsplash, floors, etc herself. I’m not sure I’m talented enough for that!

Reply

Jaw drop. I would pay your sister to come and take care of my kitchen planning. She has the knack! We’ve never tackled something quite that extensive, and your sister’s honesty about the process was really, really reassuring. It’s kind of like running… when you acknoledge that it’s going to be hard, it allows you to dig a little deeper and keep going.

Goal this week is to nurse along this achilles of mine so that I’m ready for a relay on Saturday– we are a 4-person team running a 68 mile relay and it’s going to be great!

omg her kitchen is GORGEOUS now! what a transformation! I am impressed.

This is so gorgeous! We are renting our home, and I wish we had done some minor stuff like painting and redoing the floors when we first moved in, because we’ve been here eight years and I can’t believe I’ve suffered through it so long, haha!

I hear you on the how tough it is to do a remodel for a few month. Your old kitchen also totally looks like my old kitchen. Our old kitchen had Yellow counter tops, brown cabinets, gross linoleum, and cabinets over the island. We removed everything, had to get rid of the drop down ceiling, Sheetrock the ceiling, paint the walls, move electrical because we didn’t have a dishwasher so we needed power. We didn’t have gas in our house and we were desperate for a gas stove so we had to run new lines for the gas all that way to our house, around the house and to our appliances. We didn’t weren’t able to do everything as inexpensive as you guys did. We had a guy in our ward build our cabinets and they were custom and exactly what we wanted so well worth the money. We also did granite but got ours on an awesome deal. and then we had carpet in our dining room and living room so when we got the wood flooring we did 1/2 of my upstairs in it. I wish they had the water proof flooring that they now have. So we had issues with the floor buckling. Total cost of our kitchen, cabinets, appliances, flooring was around around $7,000 but it was definitely worth every penny. One thing we also did because both my husband and i are so tall we had our cabinet guy put all of our cabinets on risers so instead of going to my hip my cabinets god to the middle of my waste. It makes i so much easier to do dishes, clean, and cook because i don’t have to bend down so much.

your before and afters look incredible. Great job doing so much work yourself. Very impressive!

Reply

Wow. I am impressed. I definitely couldn’t do it…however I have a very handy man of my own – so if our kitchen or anything else needs fixing.. I have live in help :). Your sister definitely has a talent for this!

My running goal = hit 100km of running this week as I have some races coming up. And to have fun while running those km!

Reply

Amazing job! What a beautiful end result — classic and elegant. I only had to coordinate some major renovations in our home this summer — I did exactly zero of the work — and I found just overseeing hardwood flooring installation super stressful. So I’m in awe that you were able to take care of all of this yourselves! Enjoy your beautiful new kitchen!

Reply

Move over Joanna Gaines. This is the best kitchen reno I’ve ever seen. Working around the inexpensive cabinet doors was very smart. You did a great job of leaving the electrical and plumbing in place, but still adding counter space. I love the colors, I’ve been dreaming of a gray and white kitchen.

Reply

Beautiful! Jealous as well! ;)

Reply

WOW! It’s beautiful! I keep thinking I’d like to tackle a project like this, but it’s such a big deal. Well done!

Hello! The remodel looks amazing! I was wondering where your sister got the flooring. We’re looking for a waterproof option, and what she chose looks similar to the shade we would need.

Reply

Ok your sister is AMAZING!! I am seriously in awe. Better than fixer upper! WAY TO GO!

Reply

Wow! It totally looks like from a “Fixer upper” episode! Very impressed!

Reply

My jaw in on the floor! Wow!!! That is an amazing transformation!!! My favorite part is the pantry area! That was a great idea for that space. More counter space is always welcome! Okay, and let’s talk about how on earth this was accomplished after recovering from back surgery, having a baby, taking care of two little guys and the rest of the family and taking care of yourself, too! (Eat, sleep, exercise, whatever). Such an accomplishment and proof of your get-er-done attitude! Congratulations!

Also, great idea to share this on the blog!! I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a good home transformation!

Wow, huge congrats, the kitchen turned out simply stunning. I’m only a little embarrassed at how excited I’ve been for this post, but Sis, ypu have such great style, i knew it would be impressive. Seriously my favorite pic is the one that shows you all made it out alive, that project is no joke. Enjoy!!

Wow you really are Joanna Gaines!! It’s beautiful. Well done.

So impressive! So much to be proud of!! When you think about it, you overcame your back, so this was less in comparison. Maybe?

There is so much to like, it’s lighter and brighter, easier to maintain. Love the tile and the countertop and double ovens and pantry….

How long did it take? We have an idea of the cost and other commitments, so I’m wondering about the number of calendar days and hours? Thanks for sharing!

That kitchen looks so awesome!!! I am super impressed. My parents had 4 kids and spent 10 years building paycheck to paycheck and took their original 1 story, under 1000sqft house to the just under 5000sqft, 2 story house I grew up in.

Reply

In our previous house, we re-did the entire thing, piece by piece over 7 years, including doing the kitchen while our oldest boys were 1 and 3 (I washed lots and lots of bottles and sippy cups in the bathroom sink). Tell your sis that she was brilliant to add that extra counter space and I am totally impressed with her skills – she fed and maintained a family of 7 during the remodel, did all the remodeling/building, *and* kept her grass green during a Utah summer at the same time!

Reply

I can totally see Joanna’s style in there. I LOVE IT. OMG, Fixer Upper is my favorite show. I love every one she does. I am even willing to move to TX just so that I can buy a crappy house and have her redo it for me. You guys did an amazing job. I love the way you saved money (and shared it with us). Looks awesome. Every ounce of agony was worth it.

Reply

Holy cow!!! Your kitchen is absolutely incredible! You are very talented and definitely hgtv show worthy! You motivate me to take on my kitchen but the idea of doing that with kids is a little (a lot) scary to me. I seriously cannot even imagine the chaos with five kids and a diy kitchen Reno – you are one amazing mama!!! Great work!:)

Reply

Amazing job – I can’t believe you built your own cabinet boxes – that is over the top! Thanks for sharing how you did everything on a budget. Impressive! And your family looks happy in the after picture :)

We’ve done minor remodels but nothing to that extent. Most recently it was renting scaffolding to change out several light fixtures on our two story ceilings. We were quoted $1,000 but were able to rent the scaffolding for $85 from Home Depot and do it. It took about 12 hours total of me and my husband working (had to assemble and reassemble the scaffolding in a couple rooms) but it was worth the savings!

Late poster here… just gotta say, very impressive! I’m amazed that you had the vision with just seeing those doors for sale. Dang! I guess watching a bunch of home remodels will do that! Maybe if I watch a bunch of cooking shows I could be inspired too…
Thanks so much for sharing! Enjoy your hard work!

I am very impressed!! Especially with having your hands full with kids (and 2 little ones too!). Love her style! I remember when my parents redid their kitchen. My dad did it himself, but he had a job as a Chief Engineer on a Cargo ship, so he’d be home for 8 weeks and out at sea for 8 week, etc.. so there was one time he was away and my mom had to cook all our meals on a single bunsen burner and an electric griddle! Now we bought a home from the 40’s and nothing was updated, so it is also quite the fixer upper! My dad was our 3rd roommate for a few months redoing our bathroom (complete gut including plumbing and electrical work). We’ve also ripped out the carpet and refinished our floors. Our next big project is the kitchen which also needs a complete gut! which includes making a half wall on a wall that’s a supporting beam and redoing some electrical work. oh joy! Curious as to how you guys did all your meals while the kitchen was MIA? We definitely want to try and not go out to eat while our kitchen is under construction.

Reply

That is an amazing looking kitchen. Very well done. Congratulations.

Janae, your sister is AMAZING! She looks like a supermodel, she has 5 kids (!!!) and she did an AMAZING job remodeling that kitchen. I’m Pinterest-ing that WHOLE thing! Congratulations! I’m beyond impressed.

Not sure if you are still answering any questions on this post but how did you make the top of your table? Is it just wood that you stained???? Its beautiful and exactly what we are looking for to add to our kitchen.
