Need some running motivation/inspiration? JOIN my challenge and let’s do this together!

Today’s post is sponsored by WeCompete!  I’m excited to share this fitness game with you.  It adds a whole new level of fun and motivation to our runs!  I’ve got an awesome offer from WeCompete today too at the end of the post!

———————————————————-

I don’t know about you but during this time of year when I don’t have any races on my schedule and the temperatures are dropping at home, I ESPECIALLY need some extra motivation to keep moving.  Having something that can give me some needed excitement and get me out the door and move is especially nice.  Being able to have other people to do a challenge with (ask my mom, we’ve done a lot of different challenges together in so many different areas of life) keeps me working hard towards a goal.  That is why I’m so excited about WeCompete!  This is something that can keep all of us motivated and excited to keep moving.

PS I’ve always wanted a running picture with the DIXIE mountain in the background after seeing a bunch of people do this.  Thank you Andrew for helping me finally get one:)

WeCompete is a fitness game for iOS that uses your iPhone’s pedometer, an Apple Watch, or a Jawbone fitness tracker!! I love having a way that you can compete in step and distance challenges with the people in your life or with people from around the world.

A fun way to challenge your friends/family to stay active with you—> yes, please.   The challenges that you create with WeCompete allow everyone to compete no matter what your age is or your fitness level.  It is an awesome way to connect with others that want to MOVE too… which we all do!

Using WeCompete as a way to involve my friends and family (and ALL of you) in a fitness challenge makes me beyond excited.

This is how WeCompete works—>  You create a challenge and customize it to your goals.  You can also join a public challenge that works for you and your personal goals!  After you create a challenge you then invite your friends to join you or you can also make your challenge open so that anyone can join!  The fun part comes then with working towards winning or accomplishing the daily step goal or reaching the distance in a challenge.   Then it is time to collect your prize!!!    Those near the top of the leaderboard or the people that hit their daily or weekly goals earn WeCompete coins and bragging rights over your friends/family/other people competing.

PS You get to use fun power-ups called Pains & Gains to get a step up on the competition and an extra boost.  You can choose whether or not you want to use Pains & Gains when you are making the challenge too!  The Pains & Gains add a little more fun and variety to your challenge if you do want to use them!

Andrew and I currently have our own challenge together that is about to start which is good for us because we thrive on a little competition.   Competitions most definitely motivate me to work harder!

Game on Andrew.   A lot is on the line here with this;)

I personally will be using my iPhone’s pedometer to track my steps/distance for my challenges.  I always have my phone with me no matter what during a run for safety reasons and I can take pictures.  I just slip my phone into my fuel band around my hips.  I forget it is even there it is so comfortable.  Andrew uses an armband to put his phone in while he runs to track his steps/distance for the challenges.

PS I really think we just all need to move down to St. George during the winter to run…  I like snow during the holidays but then I very quickly get over it.

I love the idea that you can create your own fitness challenges with WeCompete and have control over when and how YOU compete.  WeCompete is an awesome way to work together with your friends and family to stay accountable to your fitness goals.  I think it would be really fun if we all did one together each month of the year?  Who is IN?  If you need some inspiration or an extra push then most definitely give WeCompete a try!

Invite your friends and family and help motivate each other to keep on moving!

Okay, just one more in my sweat band, you are welcome;)  Obviously Beretta was excited about it.

Brooke flexing with her WeCompete sweat band on.  Wearing a sweat band just makes you feel a whole lot more tough and flexing with one on just takes it to the next level.

Let’s do this together and stay active while the weather is telling us to slow down and hibernate… Runners don’t hibernate.

———————————————————————————–

Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner I would love to hear what your top two favorite Thanksgiving foods are!!  Any that you really do not like?

Do you normally run with your phone?  Where do you store it while you run?  Or do you hold it?

-I used to always hold it while I ran (which resulted in me cracking the screen one time because I fell while running ha).  Now I just store it in a fuel belt or my jacket pocket if it is cold enough to wear a jacket/vest.

Do you remember running with a portable cassette tape or CD player many years ago?

-Yes, I do.  I used my sister’s mixed tapes for all of my runs and listened to Celine Dion like it was my job.

Who is going to join this challenge?!  Who wants to do a monthly challenge together?

I never run with my phone, so I don’t know if I could do the challenge. Would I have to carry it with me on a run for the app to track my workouts? (So, no, I never ran with a CD player or cassette player, but I always listened to them while I was stretching and warming up before track meets when I was in high school.)

My favorite Thanksgiving foods are mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. And ROLLS. I really love the rolls. :) And I know this sounds weird, but I don’t like Thanksgiving turkey very much for some reason. I like Turkey, but there’s something about Thanksgiving turkey that I’m not a fan of.

Reply

HEY NATALIE!!! If you are using a Jawbone wearable device or Apple Watch you don’t have to run with your phone to track your workouts. If you are using your iPhone to track your workouts you will have to carry it.

Oh rolls… I want about 10 right now ha. I feel the same way with Thanksgiving turkey, I will still eat it but not my favorite. Enjoy the rest of your night!

Aw this looks like fun! I love challenges like this. Especially with a prize of delicious treats….
I just got the iPhone 7+ and it’s ridiculous to run with. I need to get a running band for it since I can’t wear my belt right now with my belly. I feel like I’m running with a computer. If anyone has any suggestions of a good running band please share!!!!
I’m especially excited about Thanksgiving this year because I’ve been CRAVING all the pie. We can’t go to either of our parent’s houses because I’m so pregnant, so we have a friend coming to us and we’re going to get it catered (a total cop-out, I know, but I’ll be about 38 weeks pregnant). :)

Reply

OH I bet running with the iphone 7+ is hard!!!! Congrats on your pregnancy wahoo and enjoy all you can eat pie (pie calories do not matter when you are pregnant)!!!

Reply

Hey I have the iphone6+ and thought it would be hard to run with too but ended up getting a cheap spandex running arm band and it works great. It stays nice and compressed and velcros in with no bouncing around. I think it wasn’t even made for the plus but was just a generic running armband and it ended up being way better then ones I had previously used that were made for the model of phone I’d had.

Reply

what is the brand of the arm band? looking for something that won’t bounce and fits my skinny arms :)

Reply

Yesterday the high was 80 degrees and the low was 75 degrees here, so I won’t be hibernating any time soon :) I wish a cold spell would move in even for just a day!

I always run with my phone too. I keep it in my armband or my belt! I’ve recently come to the realization that I should run with my belt more and my armband less. My armband ends up like my purse, stuffed with a bunch of “just in case things” since it’s pretty big. I read that armbands can throw off your balance when running as well, so I really need to transition to the belt full time!

Reply

I do run with my phone. I stick it in my flip belt. Phones are getting so big these days, though. I have an iPhone 6, and I wouldn’t run with anything bigger. The iPhone 7 is bigger than my arm! Super uncomfortable.

Reply

Sounds like a fun challenge, but what about all of us who don’t have iphones? I have to say, I find it really annoying when an app doesn’t bother to create an android version.

Hands down, my fave Thanksgiving food is the stuffing.

Reply

For sure Emily!!! I am hoping it comes out next with the Android version:) I’ll let them know!

Enjoy the stuffing this year… my mom’s homemade stuffing makes me really happy:)

Reply

Emily, it’s me again ha! WeCompete just told me that they are planning on releasing an Android version in the future. Wahoo!

Reply

That’s great news– thanks for sharing, and I hope to join you all when it’s released!

My top two Thanksgiving foods are Turkey (of course) and Pumpkin Pie! LOVE IT with extra whipped topping!

I don’t normally run with my phone unless I’m wearing my camelbak — which is usually only when I’m doing more than 15 miles at a time. Holding it in my hand isn’t really an option because my hands get so sweaty that I’d drop my phone within a few miles!

Those CD players with “anti-skip technology” were ALL THE RAGE back in the day — and they did not work! Either the “anti skip” was a total scam or I’m the jiggliest/bounciest runner ever.

Reply

The first time I ever ran my iPhone, I dropped it and cracked the screen … Whoops!

Least favorite Thanksgiving food – Mashed potatoes & gravy … I know .. It’s crazy. But I’m just not into them!
Favorite Thanksgiving food – Mac & Cheese! … Even though I’m not sure if that’s technically a Thanksgiving food!

Reply

Picking just 2 favorite Thanksgiving foods is kind of impossible. I love the hubs’ smoked turkey, cranberry sauce, rolls, stuffing, yams, and pumpkin rolls!

I almost always have my phone on me unless I just need to unplug for a few :)

Reply

My top favorite Thanksgiving foods are mashed potatoes and gravy (all one food in my family) and deviled eggs (they are a must at any family get together on both sides). I could live on those two foods. I absolutely do not like stuffing/dressing. I don’t know why, but I can’t stand it. Funny enough, I make it almost every year for my husband. I’m making a face just thinking about the stuff.

I finally got an armband for my phone. I use it to track my runs since I can’t afford a watch yet. Once I can, I plan on getting a belt to store it. I’ll never NOT run with my phone, since I run very early in the mornings and pretty much always alone. I run on a well lit nature trail with emergency contact stations spaced along the route, so I don’t feel unsafe, but I don’t ever want to not be able to contact my husband if something were to happen.

I did most of my running in the Army once upon a time, but I did a ton of walking with my cassette tape player and eventually upgraded to a discman. We didn’t have a car for years when I was younger, so we walked or took public transportation everywhere. Music saved my sanity.

I would love to get in on this challenge. I think a monthly challenge would be awesome. I don’t know that I’ll necessarily be competitive since I have to slowly build up my mileage and I work at a desk, but any incentive to remember to get up and move it good.

Reply

Oh I LOVE deviled eggs too! Avoid that dressing this year:) That is awesome you were in the Army!! Oh I bet music made the walking a whole lot more enjoyable! Excited to do this with you and yep, any incentive to move is a good one right? Thanks and have a beautiful day!

Reply

Pumpkin pie and my Dad’s stuffing! But my all time fave is the leftover Thanksgiving sandwich that I eat later in the night, haha.

Reply

What kind of fuel belt do you like. Looking for recommendations so I don’t have to carry phone.

Reply

Hey Mary!!! This one is my absolute favorite because it is waterproof and it holds my phone so nicely. I sweat a lot and so the waterproof option is so nice! I lost is not that long ago and my current one is bugging me so I’ll be buying a new one ha:

I don’t like mashed potatoes very much. (really, unless they’re roasted or fried, I am not a big potato fan. I love turkey, turnips and brussels sprouts (roasted with bacon and a balsamic glaze).

I run with my phone in a belt, I cannot stand holding anything when I run. I keep it more for safety/emergencies than anything else. Although once in a while I have been known to call my husband and say, I’m hungry and I’m outside the diner – come meet me. He never says no.

Reply

I have tried lots of ways to carry my phone when I run but the best for me is to wear 2 sports bras and put my phone between them. :)

Reply

Okay, that is brilliant! Such a good idea Laurie! I might have to share that with some of my running friends!

Reply

I’ve just started running with my phone and usually I just hold it. Although, I am afraid I’ll drop it and crack the screen too!

Ah, thanksgiving! Probably a couple of my favorite foods are the cranberry sauce (the homemade kind! Also, I like to cut some of the sugar it calls for, I prefer it on the tart side) and sweet potato casserole. Mmm. And stuffing is pretty amazing too.

Can’t wait to join the challenge! Downloading the app now!

Reply

My grandmother makes the best sweet potato casserole ever. I chose it for my favorite two :) I only run w/ my phone when I run alone, which is less than 5% of the time. I am a social runner! Haha. I totally remember running with a portable CD player and also the radio Walkman that had huge earbuds. Does this app work w/ Garmin at all? I’m all about a challenge!

Reply

The app doesn’t work with the Garmin (maybe it will someday:) but it does with the iphone, Apple Watch or Jawbone Fitness Tracker! Hopefully you can do it with us! Yep… social running is where it is at! Oh yes, the huge earbuds… can’t forget those! Enjoy the rest of your Thursday Sam!

Reply

The iPhone can sync w/ Strava, which syncs w/ Garmin Connect. I wonder if that would be a possible workaround?!

Reply

Sam!! WeCompete just let me know that it doesn’t currently work with Garmin products, but they plan on adding support for them in the future!

I was recently running with my series 2 apple watch which is awesome because it has bluetooth capabilities, GPS, and music without the need of carrying your phone. Then I had a bad fall while doing a 4 mile fast paced run. My apple watch shattered and I also had a bunch of scrapes. I ended up ordering a replacement watch as soon as I got home (I can’t live without it) and in the meantime I bought a Garmin watch and ipod nano 7th generation. Even though I got my watch 6 days later, I love the garmin and ipod combo. No more glitches. I enter my runs in the nike run club app so that it’s on my health activity on my phone and watch. I do still wear my apple watch most of the other time. I’m excited to try the WEcompete app. I don’t run as many miles as most you ladies here but I will do my best! My favorite thanksgiving foods are my mom’s cornbread sausage stuffing, a 3 day brined roasted citrus infused turkey, cranberry sauce made from scratch, a good gravy, and rolls. I love thanksgiving so much that I feel like i eat thanksgiving-like sides all year long like green beans, roasted root vegetables, and sweet potatoes.

Reply

Oh bummer about your FALL… and your apple watch breaking! I’m glad you are loving your garmin and ipod combo! YAY for joining the app and I’m stoked to do this with you. Okay, your mom’s meal sounds HEAVENLY!!!

Reply

always run with my phone. I have a belt. can’t stand the ones that go on the arm. they feel so weird. signed up for the challenge!

Reply

YAY!!! Oh I am excited to do this with you Candy! Yep, I can’t do the ones on the arm either! With the belt I don’t even feel my phone! Enjoy the rest of your day!!!

Reply

I love the variety of Thanksgiving! We always have a huge gathering and the variety is awesome. Butternut squash bake is pretty high on my list, but I also just love turkey, mashed potatoes and dressing. And pie! I think I’m making pecan pie brownies this year because chocolate with pecan pie topping is irresistible.

I always run with my phone. I started wearing cycling jerseys to run in because of the pockets in the back.

I can’t do the challenge this month – my knee is injured so my running miles are down while my cycling miles are up. But it sounds like fun!

Reply

Love roasted brussels sprouts and pumpkin pie. My mother in law makes the best pumpkin pie. And pecan pie. And berry. I sorta lucked out with my mother in law.

Reply

Maybe you can mail me a piece of your MILs pumpkin pie:) Enjoy!!!

Reply

I definitely remember running with my big clunky Sony Walkman and tons of CD’s in a big belt around my waist, and struggling to keep running at a fast pace while changing CD’s was a feat in itself!

The challenge looks SO fun but I don’t have an iPhone so I will be a cheerleader ! :)

Reply

I always run with my phone even though I just bought a Garmin for the first time. I downloaded the app but am wondering about the treadmill for the challenge?? I have a 6 mo old and live in Wisconsin so outside miles aren’t always feasible?? I would love to participate it’s totally in my wheel house!

Reply

GREAT QUESTION!!! I think if you phone is actually on you (like in a fuel belt) it will still count your steps… not sure about distance though. I am going to have to ask them. Yeah, the treadmill is your best friend I am sure!! Thanks Maggie!

Reply

Hey Maggie!! WeCompete just told me that they WILL track all of your treadmill workouts… WAHOO:) Enjoy the rest of your day!

Reply

Great! I joined the challenge and can’t wait until tomorrow!

My stomach did something horrible late winter and I don’t think I can eat my favorite thanksgiving food- stuffing!!! My favorite is honestly stove top but as I am trying to figure out my stomach issues, it will be a sad pass this year. Cranberry sauce, especially the jelled one that comes out of the can is a must. I make my turkey with an apple cider brine and swear by it. My youngest turns 6 on Thanksgiving day and so birthday cake will be part of the meal, along with pumpkin pie.

Reply

My favorites are turkey and cranberry (homemade full berry) sauce. Love this as a sandwich. I like sweet potatoes only if they are not candied. And green beans if they are not in a casserole.
I don’t like gravy, stuffing, potatoes, or pie (of any kind) I usually make a HUGE mixed green salad so I have something to eat besides turkey and cranberries. Since I have been the one making the meal for the last 35 years I make sure to try to please myself too. :) Next year my daughter promises to take over the task so I am happy about that.

Reply

Yep, best sandwich ever… there is a restaurant near here that does that combo almost year round so now you have me craving it ha! YAY for next year getting to just enjoy the meal!!!

Reply

Oh my goodness – absolutely ran with the discman. The key was finding one that didn’t skip. Haaa. I don’t run with my phone. I want to be completely disconnected. I understand it is best to run with it for safety reasons…

I don’t do these challenges. I’m enough of a maniac on my own without competing with others. This would make me insane! :) THAT said, I look forward to your updates on it and I know you will have fun. Enjoy!

Reply

The one that didn’t skip were sure pricey though hahaha! That totally makes sense to get that time to be disconnected! GOOD FOR YOU to do what is best for you and your brain. I can’t do food challenges because it makes me go crazy. I hope you are having a great day!

Reply

Favorites – Mashed potatoes and gravy.

I run with my phone in a belt!

I joined! Too bad this app doesn’t connect to any Fitbit products!

Reply

YAY FOR JOINING AMY!!! Excited to see how this goes… and now I am craving some mashed potatoes and gravy ha. Enjoy the rest of your day:)

Reply

HEY AMY!! I just heard back from WeCompete and they said they are currently working on integrating Fitbit products with WeCompete! WAHOOOOO!

Reply

That would be awesome. I don’t carry my phone around all day, but I do wear my Fitbit! So, I’d get more steps on WeCompete ;)

Reply

Just signed up! We are doing a challenge at work too where we are split into teams and competing each week for number of miles. Excited to try this too!

Reply

Oh that is AWESOME Laurie! So excited you joined and good luck with both competitions right now!

My family and I are flying to SLC tomorrow from Tulsa, and then driving to Provo to visit my brother. Are there any must-do’s while we are in town? Also, where is the BEST place to go for a run?

Reply

WAHOO!!! I am so excited that you are going to be in Utah and that your brother lives in Provo. Okay, my favorite spot to run is in the Provo Canyon… They have a bike/running trail and the scenery is unreal. It is a little bit colder up there so don’t forget gloves but the views are worth it. You run next to a river and a waterfall and the mountains are so pretty. As far as food goes you have to try Cafe Rio and we love Gurus. If you can make it up to Sundance to eat (it is a little bit more expensive there) then do it… it is so good and pretty. Also, Provo Bakery donuts are amazing:) Have a blast!

Reply

I think Audrey should have the pink sugar cookie place, right? Or do we all already know it? ; )

Reply

OH I do not know how I forgot that… YOU HAVE TO GO TO SWIG AUDREW for a sugar cookie:)

Reply

I downloaded the app, but cannot find the challenge. Nothing is listed under featured and under all it is missing. :(
A search function would be great!
Also, wish it was compatible with the FitBit app :)

Reply

OH NO!!! I am so so sorry! Did you look it up today or yesterday? I think you might have had to sign up before it started but I’m not sure… let me email WeCompete!!

Reply

Okay, I just heard back… once a challenge has started, additional members are unable to join. I am so sorry! Join in next month please:)

Reply

I really want to do this challenge but I only have a garmin watch and an ipod…Do you know if there is any way to sync this app with my workout app that syncs with my garmin? I am all for fitness goals and this sounds like such a fun thing to try! Thanks for sharing!

Reply

HEY TAYNA!! There isn’t currently a way to sync with your garmin but they told me they are currently working on making this compatible. Thank you and I hope you have an awesome weekend!

Reply

Sounds great! I love challenges. I downloaded the app, but couldn’t find the challenge. It also couldn’t find my apple watch. I’ll have to play with it again later.

Reply

Hey there, I just added the WeCompete app and for some reason i can’t find your November Numbers competition anywhere… thoughts?

Reply

I do the workweek challenge on fitbit with about 10 girls. It is fun to see who can get the most steps during the week! It definitely makes me move more than I would normally. I remember running with my walk man … can’t believe that!
