The end of our vacation and marathon training week #8

It is a little sad when you go from this being the view from your car…

to this being your view:

We decided to stop in Vegas on the drive home for a quick lunch and somehow that turned into walking around Mandalay Bay and eating at their buffet.

IMG 6359

The highlight of the buffet was the sushi, crab legs, potatoes and the soft-serve.

IMG 6365

Just a few random things.

-You know you are dating a really great person when you tell them on the way home from the beach… ‘that donut shop that we passed by 15 minutes ago looked really delicious’ and then they turn the car around and drive back to the donut shop because they know how much donuts mean to you

IMG 6327

-Vacations are for donuts.

IMG 6324 1

-What do you think—>  Could you eat pizza WHILE running?

IMG 6141

-I’ve had some people ask about where some of my clothes from the last few days are from—>  Gap.  Everything is 40% off there today!

My dress at Disneyland is here (under the sale dresses—> slub t-shirt dress) and I was sporting these jeansthis shirt and this shirtIMG 6372

-Total mileage for our road trip—>  1508 miles.  I feel good about that.

St. George Training Week #8 (aka recovery week after my half-marathon last weekend):

Monday:  8.4 miles @ 8:20 average pace.

Tuesday:  6.3 miles @ 8:14 average pace.  I realized during this run that my body needed some time off in order to recover properly from my race.  I was exhausted.

Wednesday:  Off

Thursday:  Off

Friday:  5 miles @ 7:52 average pace and 14 miles of walking around Disneyland:)

Saturday: 8 miles @ 7:53 average pace.

Sunday:  Off!

26.7 miles total.

Starting today (gotta love Mondays:) it is back to normal training, some weight lifting (Brooke has been hitting the weights more than I have) and attempting to eat like an athlete (easy for me to train like one but really hard for me to eat like one).

So glad you had a great time! I can’t believe he turned around for the donuts.. that’s definitely a sign that he’s a keeper!! :) Glad he is treating you well and keeping you well fed!

Reply

Seriously, I could eat pizza while sleeping!

Reply

HAHAHAHA You are hilarious! Thank you for making me laugh this morning:)

Reply

My best run last week was my mile repeat track workout! 6 sub-7:00 miles!

I actually really like to strength train when I’m doing it, so an 8. When I’m not doing it a 3. I have very low motivation for it. I try to strength train 2x a week.

My goals for this week are to (attempt) to get my runs in while on vacation!

Reply

I was scarred after reading Dean Karnazes’ book where he talked about eating pizza and taco bell while running. It makes me sick thinking about it but I get that people actually EAT while running sometimes! Glad you had an awesome trip :)

Reply

YES!! I remember that part of the book too and wondering how in the world he was able to do that! Hope you are having an awesome Monday Michele!

Reply

The best part of my weekend was pool time with my sister. LOVE her. :)

I honestly need to strength train more. Right now, I only do it on my off day (Monday), but I should likely incorporate it more.

This week, I hope to keep building mileage and speed.

So glad you had a wonderful trip! Happy for you!! :)

Reply

What a great trip! And he is definitely a winner to turn around for donuts!! :)

Best run was my 18 miler yesterday. It flew by! Worst run was my intervals last Monday. I was sick to my stomach the whole time and while my legs felt good, my stomach did not.

Goal this week is to get in my strength training. I like it, I just don’t do it enough!

Reply

GREAT JOB Sarah on your 18 miler… that is a LONG run! Let’s both get our strength training in this week!

Reply

My goals for this week are to work out some tightness in my glutes that has transferred down to my right knee. I’m going for my first sports massage this week – gotta do whatever it takes to hit the starting line in Chicago feeling strong!

Your mini trip sounds like it was a lot of fun and that you ate just the right amount of donuts for vacation :) Next week I’ll be on vacation and will have to follow your good example!

Reply

have you ever heard of a donut run? You eat donuts while completing a 5k.
Best run last week was a 4 mile run on a new to me trail. It was right along the river and so pretty!
Highlight of my weekend was doing the Wipeout Run!!! So fun!

Reply

I really think I need to do one of these donut runs… I think I would love it (and feel sick at the same time ha). OH… new trail runs are the absolute best. I hope you get to do it again soon. So fun about your Wipeout Run… I’ve heard those are awesome!

Reply

Well my best run was my only run last week; 1/4 mile of running while walking a 5k. I’m 36 weeks pregnant so I can’t do as much these days! Still strength training 2-3x a week and walking as much as I can.

Reply

Erica, you are rocking it!!! You are so close to your little baby being here:) I’m so happy for you!

Reply

I strength train twice a week during training, and during off-season/base building I like to step it up to 3x a week. It’s so beneficial for running!
My goal this week is to do every run outside after running so much on the treadmill during travel last week.

Reply

-I was a little light on my mileage this week, do to work schedule and my husband being gone. Best run was Sunday’s 5 miles. Worst was Thursday impromptu 5 miler in the hot afternoon sun…ugh I REALLY dislike afternoon running!
-Best part of the weekend is my husband being home after 4 days gone.
-I strength train 1-2 days, one of those days is with an easy run. I like it about a 5.
-This weeks goals: more mileage!

Reply

Seriously. Running in the afternoon (especially when it is hot) is so ridiculously hard for me too… I get you. YAY for the husband getting home this weekend!

Reply

Best run: yesterday in California with my husband.
Worst run: my long run. It went really well, but I was worn-out after.
Strength training. 6
Pizza on the run…nope!
Weekly goal: relax and enjoy a few days away from a set schedule!

Reply

Running last week wasn’t the best..I was in a funk and wasn’t sleeping well and my running definitely suffered! I ended up skipping a race, but my long run (8 miles) went really well!

Goals for the week are to get back in the groove- get back into strength training and yoga, and get in some good runs! My half training starts today so I have to get over this funk!

Reply

Best part of the weekend was drinks on the riverside with cousins and friends!
My goal for this week is to go to a new gluten free bakery and try out their donuts and treats. Seems legit.

Reply

Woohoo!! Any man that feeds into your sweet tooth is a winner in my eyes!;)
My goal this week is to shake this silly virus I have and actually get in all four of my runs this week as well as lots of yoga!
I actually enjoy strength training, especially with friends or my sister! My sister and I are obsessed with your Track Workout Parties at the moment:) so at least an 8/10!

Reply

My running last week was awesome, I had a race weekend and I PR’d at every one, my first 5k being 21:44, the next day my 5k was 20:42, and my 10k the next day was 45:26!

I didn’t have any “bad” runs but that 10k was super hilly and really painful

I haven’t strength trained in a month or so now that my anemia isn’t holding back my running, but I really should get back on it. I don’t know, I just don’t like the feeling!

My goal is to get in another 10+ miler this week! I ran my first two weeks ago and even though my first half is all the way in May, I want to be prepared :)

Reply

Emma—> HUGE CONGRATS!!! You had some killer races this weekend. WOW! You nailed that 10k on a hilly course! Have fun on your 10+ miler this week and let me know how it goes!

Reply

Last week sucked in the running department. I was so lazy and only went running twice and worked out 4 times all together. Better this week!

Best part of last week was seeing our good friends. It’s the best to see friends when it’s been a while.

Reply

It sounds like you had a great time Janae. California is so pretty! I seriously cannot believe you traveled 1500+ miles in a weekend, that is incredible. I have a couple of favorite sushi buffets that I could seriously eat at all the time.

Reply

My runs were awesome! Total of 60 miles, 38 of those over the weekend. Needless to say, I’ll be taking the next two days off because my knees are shot. The best part of my weekend was running over the mountains into Rocky Mountain National Park, it was epic! I don’t have the wherewithal to strength train with all of the miles, my arms have basically lost definition. But my legs are strong! I have been thinking of changing running short types from the loose distance shorts to the compression type shorts. Any comment on which you like better?

Reply

JENNY!! AWESOME mileage this week and you did 38 this weekend!?! WOW. Sounds like you had some incredibly beautiful runs. I have actually just kind of made the switch to the compression type lately. I love them but somedays they hike up and that drives me crazy.

Reply

What a fun vacation! That donut looks fabulous!

Reply

Those donuts look delicious!

The best part of my weekend was date night last night. my boyfriend made chicken with cheesy sauce, pasta, and veggies. He’s a great cook.

Reply

Your weekend looked amazing!! We road tripped this weekend too, but only 1000 miles round trip. I can’t imagine 1500! I think I ate every snack imaginable, and I had to have a donut too! The best part of the weekend and mini vacay was trying new foods! We had some amazing BBQ, Chipotle for the first time ever (sad, I know!!) and of course froyo. That said, my goals for the week are to get back on the healthy eating track and get some good runs in :)

Reply

YAY for road trips:) I hope you loved Chipotle and that you get to go again soon. Let’s get back on track together!

Reply

I love that you are so happy and dating someone who treats you well :) You deserve it! Good luck with your training this week and thank you for telling me where you cute dress was from :)

Reply

What a fun vacation! Strength training is the least of my favorite part but probably the most important now after a year of pain and injury the first year of running. I love having no issues now with my legs due to my cross-training. I’m loving my yoga 3 days a week and my strength training 1 day a week with my running.

Reply

Best part of the weekend was going on a family bike ride!

Reply

Strength training is almost all I can do – so it is 10++++

My weekend was ok – it was no Disney adventure like last week.

That donut! *drools*

Reply

Looks like a fun vacation! I need to hop on the strength training bandwagon as well. I hardly ever do it, but strength training is SO IMPORTANT!!

Reply

Looks like such a great trip! Aren’t road trips the best??

My running last week was pretty good, but my strength training has been almost non-existent. I’m getting married in 12 days (YIKES!!) and have used running to keep my sanity, but strength training has definitely gone on the backburner.

Reply

My week of running went well- working on continuing to build my base mileage!
I strength train 2x per week and would rate it a 7 in terms of how much I enjoy it.
Best part of my weekend is that its not over yet! Headed to the state fair today with my husband and step son.
So glad you had such a great time on your road trip!

Reply

That fritter looked ah-maz-ing!! Best part of the weekend was running my husband’s 6.5 mile training run with him and then following it up with day drinking and Cards Against Humanity!

Reply

Sounds like you finished your road trip with a bang! What is your “guy’s” favorite type of donut?

At 35 weeks pregnant, I have decided to put my running on hold and stick to walking/hiking during my final weeks. My pelvic region can no longer handle the pressure and weight of the baby, and I promised myself I would stop when running is no longer enjoyable. My goal for this week is to get outside once a day for a walk or hike!

Reply

I had two decent runs last week. Trying not to push it while my tweaked hammy heals. I did a cartwheel last weekend to injure it. Dopey me.
I had a surprise bonus visit from the boy this weekend. I thought I would have to go 8 days without seeing him but he came and broke the separation 3 days early. Woo hoo! He works so hard at balancing his kids and I so that no one is neglected. I love him for that.
I don’t strength train at all. If I spent all the time I bitch about not doing it doing it I would be a buff woman by now. Lol.

Reply

I could probably eat pizza while running and love it.

Reply

I got to see my friend from high school last night after 15 years! He moved to Australia. That was definitely the highlight of my weekend. My goal for this week is to nail 6 or 7 Yasso 800s in around 3 minutes each.

Reply

That is so awesome Suzy! You will rock your Yassos… you’ve got this!

Reply

It makes me so happy that you’re happy with your new guy. Buffets are do the way to go every time!!

Reply

Thank you so much Morgan:)

Reply

I’m in the middle of a similar transition to eating like an athlete and eating for performance. I was also on a long car trip this weekend and I packed snacks for myself and the kids with health in mind. Lots of fruits and such.

Reply

Love the cute picture of Brooke weight lifting :-)

I see what you mean about the change in scenery but I guess we have to be thankful for the sunshine. And some time at Disney has to be good fun. BTW the red top looked good.

Good on you for the training week.

My running week has gone pretty well with some new personal bests. I’m looking forward to a day or two off. However I’m in the middle of The MAD Challenge at the moment so the first day off is September. Wish me luck.

Good luck to you with your marathon training.

Reply

That is awesome Steve! Good luck and huge congrats on your new personal bests! You are so right about being grateful for the sunshine:) Thank you and I hope you are having a fabulous day!

Reply

I’m probably strength training 2x per week. Rehabbing a knee injury so I’ve been focusing on my legs.

Reply

My body loves strength training. I wish I could track mileage for strength training like you do for running.

Reply

Teach my body to love strength training:) You are awesome Megan! I hope you are having a fabulous day!

Reply

Not sure I did not take part in that pizza run! Looks like fun!

I love that picture of Ca!! I always was so bummed driving back to Phoenix after our trips to Disney. I love the beach!

I had awesome running week. Week two of training for Marine Corp. My running friend and I are killing our training runs!! heehee! Trying to make marathon 18 (at age 39) a pr!!!! That’s my motivation. I also would like to improve my Boston corral! Tomorrow we are doing 1600s, yikes!!!!!! Trying to get in a lot of miles until I am back to school, getting ready for my first graders.

Happy Running!

Reply

I got sick randomly last week so my runs/workouts were slightly affected but I am hoping to be back to normal for this week! I do strength train regularly now, only because I do Pure Barre a few times a week. Otherwise, I always favored cardio and slacked on everything else!

Reply

I have taken the last month off of running because I’m due with my second child in 9 days, and at this point running just hurts everything. Your blog and all of the comments are making me pumped to get back out there again!

I am still trying to do some modified strength training two to three days a week and get out for some nice walks, but my main goal for the week is to get ready for baby and sleepless nights.

I grew up in Newport Beach so Oh Those Donuts is a family tradition, and the apple fritter is my favorite!

Reply

Ummmm yes, that’s a good guy indeed. Donuts are always a good idea, especially while on vacation! ;) And those jeans are SO cute! Might have to get some!

xo

Reply

Definitely a great guy if he turned around for donuts. Sounds like you’re lucky! =] Looks like it was a fun trip.

As for my training, this month has been essentially thrown out the window. Too many visitors/trips + very busy work season. I’m still getting runs and some cross training in here and there but not at the rate I’d like. But that’s life.

And strength training, I don’t do near enough of it mainly because I hate going to the gym. I recently have gone kayaking a few times. I’d say that’s got to count a bit for upper body/core workout. Especially this Sunday since I paddled into a 5 knot current (water running 3 miles per sec). I’m thinking I should do some more “sneaky” strength training so that I enjoy/do it more.

Reply

What a gem your guy is to go back and get you donuts! Sounds like you had a super fun road trip!

I don’t do enough strength training because I just don’t enjoy it like I do running. I wish I did because I know how important it is.

I love visiting Vegas, the beautiful hotels, the amazing buffets, and all the happy energy there! You sure love your sushi! I am hoping to go there in November for the marathon.

Reply

Every marathon training cycle I swear I am going to be better about strength training, and then fail. So, it’s going well in my head and on paper, but just not in actuality ;).

Have a great day, Janae!

Reply

turning around for donuts = true love.

Reply

Looks like you had a great time, and I love that he turned around for the doughnuts!

Just coming back after a bad hip injury following the Manitoba Marathon in June. My physiotherapist has me getting up and running again though and for that I’m grateful. Got in 6k yesterday and it felt sooooo good to be running again (without major pain).

You inspire me!! I’ll be watching to learn more about how you eat leading up to a marathon. I really have to start moving that in the right direction.

Reply

Eating and running? Not so much! And I love that you’re rocking those white sandals with everything. They really work with nearly every outfit! :)

Reply

Vacation is for donuts. Love that you had a fun vacation!

Reply

Best run last week was def Tuesday (7 miles) – worst run was Sunday (16 hot & humid miles). I have been doing bar method M/W/Th for about two months now as my strength training. I hate strength training unless I do it in a class and get into a routine. AND – is gas really over $4 in California?! It is down to $2.25 in Orlando!

Reply

Best part of the weekend – Seeing Jurassic World!! I haven’t been to the movie theater since 2008. Crazy. They had a machine that dispensed Powerade Zero. Amazing.

Reply

I used to kind of loath the idea of strength-training. Now I love it as a welcome break for my body from cardio.

I ran 4 times last week, which is pretty amazing for me, cause I usually only do 3 times a week. I guess I would say that just running 4 times was a victory for me!

That apple fritter. YES please. I have family who lives in Vegas, and even though I don’t love going to Vegas, my favorite part is probably being with family and the buffets. They have the best buffets.

Reply

lol…you and your fritters =)

Reply

I have started doing the Chronos bodyweight routine for runners that I found on Runners Connect and I really like it. It incorporates bodyweight movements like push-ups and burpees with 800 meter repeats. I like having the break to run :)

Goal for this week is to run more than 80 miles!

Reply

I like strength training. I would say it is an 8 on my scale. There is still something about a real good sweat session via cardio that I like a little more.

Best part of the weekend was all the family time.

I love all of your outfits. Please feel free to donate them to me after you tire of wearing them ;)

I feel like I could vacation real well with the both of you. #allthefood

Reply

I really struggle with strength training. I’m trying to be adamant about doing it 2-3 days a week, but it’s so much more fun to run than it is to strength train. ;)

Reply

What a fun trip!!!!
