Everything can change in the blink of an eye.

I think you all know that I am a little bit beyond obsessed with these little kiddos…..sometimes I forget that they aren’t actually my own children.

Billy and I got one of those phone calls yesterday (you know, the ones that make your heart stop and make you want to pass out a little bit).

All we knew was that my nephew and his father were in a car accident going freeway speeds (on the freeway) on their way to Salt Lake City.

This was their car:

Luckily, everyone is okay (because they were wearing their seat belts) and my best little buddy only suffered a concussion and a wicked black eye (it has now five times that size).

I don’t normally share personal family situations on the blog but I talked to my sister and asked if it was okay to tell you about the what happened for two reasons.

1.  Wear your seat belt.  That is what saved my lil’ best friend.  The thought of what would have happened if HE didn’t decide to buckle up makes me absolutely sick.  I am a drivers ed teacher and I am realizing that what I teach everyday in the classroom is something I should be spreading to other people too (via the blog).

2.  Nothing else in the world matters except for people.  It is amazing how a situation in which you feel as though you may have lost someone close to you makes you realize that any silly problem in your life really does not even come close to mattering.

All I know is that my family means more to me than anything.

I told him that I am his servant for the week…..if he wants a donut, he will have a donut.  If he wants a new nintendo or something he will have it.

I think he is most bummed about not being able to be physically active for a while (doctors orders)…….he and his sisters love jumping from bed to bed and I guess that isn’t a good idea when you have suffered a concussion.

Reading this gave me the chills! It drives me nuts when people refuse to buckle up their seatbelt in the front seat–> nobody is invincible! SO happy that your nephew made it, gosh thinking of you and your family! The thought alone must be so nauseating. I hope he milks having his aunt for a servant for the week :-)!

Oh my goodness that car is a mess! THANK GOD THEY ARE OKAY! I’m so sorry that is one of the worst phone calls… I still have a wicked concussion after my accident back in June, but that wasnt from a car crash… Hopefully the lil guy will feel better soon!!

I think lots of ice cream is in order…I hear that heals things fastest

Thank GOD he is ok!!! That is so scary. My mom was in a car accident when my sister and I were 5 and 3 years old. We skidded on sand and crashed into a telephone pole, which subsequently fell on top of the car. I was the only one who had my seatbeat on, and I was fine, but my mom suffering cuts and bruises on her face from hitting the steering wheel, and my sister cracked her skull. We had to spend a few days in the hospital, but thankfully everyone was ok despite these minor injuries. I cannot imagine ever losing someone I loved so much, and I am really glad you posted this today!

I am SO GRATEFUL to read that both of them are okay!! Seriously so glad to hear that they are okay!!!
I was in a car accident once, it was the first day of classes my sophomore year of college. My dad was showing me a different way to get home from campus(I lived at home that year) and it was sort of raining. The other driver, serrved into our lane, went left of center, and the next thing I knew I was closing my eyes, hands pushed against my body and was praying so hard for my dad and myself. My car got totaled. We walked away with a bruise on my dad’s chest from the seat belt and I had a bruised rib. The officers and everyone was saying we should have been dead because of how the impact was. I know for a fact that the Lord was over both of us. The driver had a broken arm, and did something to her back as well.

When I was in high school I was in an accident and ended up with a broken nose the week before my junior prom. The pictures are hilarious…I look like a tranny with all the makeup on to cover the bruises, they didn’t do the best job either because you can still kinda tell.

One that was my fault involving 3 cars. There was a cop right there so I didn;t get charge /w reckless driving b/c he saw the car in front cut my off and slam on the brakes to do a left turn…..otherwise rear-ends always look really bad …..another car got involved when I tried to avoid hitting the car in front.

Car was a write-off I was a college student at the time. I bought the cheapest car I could afford; a 2 door 97 cavalier and I still drive it till today :P I wish I still had my mazda :(

I ALWAYS wear my seat belt. I’ve never really been in a car accident (more than a fender bender). My husband (before we met) was in a really bad car accident.
He had to have his spleen removed and he has a large scar on his head and you guessed it NO seatbelt!
My son is almost 4 and in a booster seat. He sometimes unbuckles himself. He knows he HAS to be buckled at all times. We immediately pull over if this happens.

I was in a car accident shortly after I was married. It was a head on at a low rate of speed (ahem, was NOT my fault). I am really glad everyone is okay! Car accidents are terrifying.

I got into an awful car accident my freshman year of college. I hydroplaned down a mountain with 2 of my friends in the car. We spun clockwise and then counterclockwise trying to get the car under control and we finally hit a guardrail which stopped us. We were very fortunate because if we had landed any further down, we could have tumbled right off the side. It was the scariest moment of my life. I remember getting out of the car and laying down in the pouring rain and being so so thankful for my life. Two men stopped to help us and I was also truly grateful for the kindness of strangers.

Janae this is an AMAZING post. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing such an important lesson with HRG readers.

In 2003 I was in a serious car accident and I was not wearing my seatbelt. I was amazingly lucky because I only suffered a laceration to my head (which luckily started right behind my hairline) and needed 38 staples to fix it. I have permanent problems with short term memory and went through some physio/massage for my upper back/neck. A very small price to pay, since my doctor told me it was a MIRACLE that I was not paralyzed.

I was not the type to blow off wearing my seatbelt. I was in a car with my girlfriends on a residential road and had taken it off for a moment to pass something to a friend in the front passenger seat (we were in a van). In that small amount of time, a car that was street racing bounced off the car they were racing with and came head-on into us.

These days I never, ever, ever get into a car without immediately putting on my seatbelt. I won’t even sit in a parked car without it on. It’s just become automatic. I cannot stress enough how important it is.

And again, thank you soooo much for sharing. I am so so so so glad your nephew and bro-in-law are safe!

Janae, I’m so glad to hear your family is safe! My heart stopped for a second when I read you got one of “those” phone calls. You are so so right that nothing really matters but the people you love. Two of my brothers were in a car accident about 10 years ago and for sure one of them would have died if he weren’t wearing his seat belt. As it was, his nose and cheekbone were smashed and he has metal rods in his face to this day. I was a teenager and in one of those angry at everyone, particularly my family phases, but when we got the news they were in the hospital I thought I was going to die. Just thinking about it is making me tear up;( I hope you get to spend extra time with your family this week and treasure them up!

In high school, I was heading home (I was driving home from a football game, rushing to get home for my curfew) and in my haste to get home, I wasn’t as attentive to the road as I should have been and swerved for a dog that ran out in front of me.

I ended up hitting the ditch and rolling my dad’s huge truck about 20 times. I was able to crawl out from under the steering wheel with only a cut on my back (that has since healed into a scar that looks like a dog’s head, ironic? yeah.) and I got home to get cleaned up and call the police/fire department and my mom just started sobbing.

I survived b/c I had on my seatbelt. When I arrived back at the truck, all the firemen were there and they were saying “Get the jaws of life and get her out, where’s the body? do you see it?” they were so convinced I had died. I think God was really looking out for me and has a bigger plan. Every since that moment, I try to really live every. single. day as if it were my last because someday it will be.

You’re so right. Life isn’t about us, it’s about others, I’m so glad your little buddy is going to be ok!!!

Oh geez Janae, that’s just the worst feeling ever. I’m so glad that everyone is alright. One time when I was a kid my family went to a lake for a day of swimming, and my little sister and I were playing a game sort of like tag in the water, but with some underwater swimming involved. Anyway, I ended up not being able to find my sister, and the water was really murky and I was so scared that she had become snagged on something underwater or stayed under too long. I was sick with fear, calling her name, not finding her. It was one of the worst moments of my life. Turns out, she had just swum a long way off and there were a lot of people around so I couldn’t see her and everything was fine. But man, those moments.

Thanks for sharing. It’s always good to be reminded of how important the people in your life are.

I’m so glad everyone was OK! I have thankfully never been in more than a fender bender, but my “little” sister (who just turned 21) was in a horrible accident about 3 years ago. She was driving home late, was tired and not wearing her seatbelt – she fell asleep at the wheel and the truck she was driving veered off the road, she woke up as it was going off the road and struggled to correct it…and sent the truck spinning. It rolled 3-4 times before finally coming to rest, with my sister partially ejected from the vehicle. It was on a country road, so it took a while before a passing car saw her (both she and her boyfriend’s cell phones were dead) and called for help. When the EMT’s finally arrived they said she was literally in her final minutes as she’d been partially ejected out the back windows and had major bleeding/trauma. She was rushed to the hospital and was in the ICU for a couple weeks and had numerous surgeries (she shattered her pelvis and 1 of her hip sockets, broke her leg in a few places and had innumerable lacerations…the ICU surgeon who worked on her the first night said he lost track of how many sutures he used). After ICU she was in inpatient rehab for about a month, and will have to have a full hip replacment down the line as there wasn’t enough existing bone left to re-build things long term.
Bottom line? Wear your seatbelt, don’t drive if you’re tired, and always have your cell phone charged/let people know where you’re going!

Oh, Janae! My heart stopped when I saw that car! I’m so glad that they were safe. He’s a lucky little dude.

We’re nothing without the people we love. I lost my cousin very suddenly when I was 17 years old. She was my best friend and we were raised together (she was 9 months older), and my heart has never completely healed from that. But it has made me love the people closest to me fiercely because we never know in life what will happen.

Reading your post compels me to write my first comment on your blog!

It is ironic you posted this story, even though it is an unfortunate circumstance. I never experienced a car accident until this weekend. A drunk driver in an SUV slammed into the back of my sedan while I was stopped at a red light. For this situation, I was so thankful my friends and I weren’t hurt and by the grace of God an emergency vehicle was in the lane next to us as well as an officer ending her shift. They were witnesses to the awful condition this man was in and he should have never been driving that car.

I’m so thankful your family is ok. Getting in a car accident was always by biggest fear. Since I encountered it, I am even more thankful for my family, friends and our health. After the accident, I wondered if this topic is one that should be posted on a healthy living blog and I definitely think it is. I’m thankful you shared your family’s experience so others can learn from it and carefully consider the choices they make every day, which can affect others unexpectedly.

OH wow. Girl. I am so sorry to hear about their accident, but OH so glad they’re okay!

My dad sees people ALL the time who have suffered major brain injury/damage (he is a Neurosurgeon), because they did NOT wear their seatbelt. SO needless to say I have never not worn my seatbelt (it saved my and my sister’s lives as well in an accident), and I have never smoked <—he sees people's rotten brains because of that too!

SO true–people matter MOST!

wow, that is really scary!
I have been in 5 car accidents (yes, hard to believe!), but none of them were as serious as this one, although I have officially totalled 3 cars. You know the worst part? according to the police reports, every single one of those accidents was the other driver’s fault…talk about bad luck.
Anyway, every since my last car accident (more than 10 years) ago I haven’t been able to drive on the highway. I get panic attacks the moment I find my self on a busy road, and it has gotten so bad, that just being a passenger in a car on the highway gives me panic attacks :(

Anyway, enough about me. I am so glad to hear your little nephew and your brother in law made it through with so little damage. Go and spend as much time with them as possible for the next couple of weeks! I’m sure your sister is totally freaked out.

Janae, I am so glad that your nephew and his dad are ok. My friend died in a car accident and part of the reason was because he didn’t have his seatbelt on. I always say “seatbelt’s save lives” whenever someone drives in my car with me. It annoys people especially my little cousins but I do it anyways. It really is true. Thank you for sharing this, I’m sure people will think twice before they even consider not buckling up. Its such a simple thing.. there should be NO question! I’ve been in a couple accidents where someone rear ended me but nothing too serious thank God.

So glad everyone was okay! Not having a seatbelt in a car is not something to mess with…I’ve never been in a crash, but in high school one two of my good friends were killed in a car crash (2 separate accidents), then my freshman year of college my mom called me at 6am to tell me that another two of my friends had died in a car crash that nights. The weird part is it was all on the same road. We all live in the suburbs that you have to take a super windy road to get down to and it’s easy to lose control.

So I’m really happy everyone was alright<3

So glad he’s okay! That is terrifying. A few years ago my uncle was in an absolutely terrible accident. A teen driver was texting and driving and ended up causing my uncle to hit another car in his truck. He was fine, but the two other men in the car were killed- they both left wives and children behind. It was terrible. Driving is so scary. In fact, they made a movie about the situation for the State of Utah that is supposed to be shown in every driver’s ed. class. Have you seen it?

Anyway… I guess what I’m saying is that you are totally right. NOTHING is more important than the people in our lives.

It totally reminds you that our lives here are not forever and every single second needs to be filled with joy, happiness, love and family!

Oh my goodness, Janae! I’m so thankful he is OK and was wearing his seat belt. He’s blessed to have an aunt like you! And he looks a lot like you in my opinion. What a precious little guy! I’ll keep him in my prayers for a speedy recovery…with lots of donuts. Love you! xoxo

I am so happy your nephew is okay! He is so lucky to only have minor injuries by the looks of that car! Yowza. Seatbelts are so important. Safety first!

Oh my gosh, look at that car. Wow, so glad to hear everything is okay! And you are right, it is SO easy to get caught up in life, worried about this and that. All you need is a snap back to reality to remember what really matters. Fetch the boy a cupcake!

Oh Janae, so glad he is ok. I work in the insurance industry and have seen some horrific things- some that will stay in my mind forever. So glad they were seatbelted and will heal!! Everyone should always, always, always wear a seatbelt! Praise god that your little man is a-ok!

Now that he knows he is ok he should tell everyone that he got in a fight with the car. And if they think he looks bad they should see the other guy :)

My heart skipped a few beats reading this…. I was so scared to scroll down! I am so happy and relieved that they’re all okay!! Give him a big cuddle from all of us in internet-land…. creepy though that might sound hahaha.

So happy your family that everyone walked away safely! I was just in an accident last week, my first as a driver. While I keep complaining about my broken car and dealing with the insurance company… I have to keep reminding myself that I should just be thankful and feel blessed that no one was hurt. People are the only things that aren’t replaceable. PS- I never let anyone in my car if they won’t buckle up!

Oh my goodness, that car is just smashed, I’m so glad they are okay! What a close call and you are so right, nothing matters more in this world than people. Everything else can take a backseat to the people that matter the most to you.

I’m glad that your family is ok now (except for their bruises). I’m close to my family too and I can’t imagine something bad happening to them :(

I’ve come close to getting in a car accident, I had to swerve really crazy to avoid it. I had to pullover right after because I was shaking of thinking of what could have happened. So scary!
